Thomas Hübl sits down with celebrated speaker, posthumanist thinker, poet, teacher, and author Bayo Akomolafe to explore the leading edges of spiritual thinking and human identity. Bayo is a deeply experimental thinker, informed by the African cosmologies of the Yoruba and Igbo traditions. He leads an exploration into a new paradigm of healing that de-centers the individual to focus on the village, on the communal. He and Thomas discuss how modernity, especially in Western cultures, creates a false dichotomy between spirituality and science, pathologizes behavior that should instead be integrated, and offers a reductive, motionless view of the self. Bayo offers a different perspective, one in which the self or the psyche is always moving in an interconnected dance with our lineages, with evolution, and with the mysteries of the material realm. Bayo also explores how modern spiritual models contribute to systems of oppression, stressing the importance of spaciousness, non-conformity, and relationality in spiritual thinking and practice.   Click here to watch the video version of this episode on YouTube:

Today, we present a wild and flowering conversation between two poets, writers, philosophers, and theobiologians Bayo Akomalofe and Sophie Strand. This conversation is from a 2022 SAND Community Gathering. To hear the full conversation with Q&A from the live webinar you can view it here (with SAND Membership). In Greek Mythology, the Titan Kronos eats an indigestible stone and vomits up the new Olympic pantheon of gods. In our current time, people planted in stratigraphic layers of shared trauma find themselves uniquely ill – physically and mentally. We are unable to digest food and unable to digest violence. What if indigestion – practical and mythical – was a sign that a new world was threatening to be born? The very basis of our nucleated cells is an ancient botched bacterial cannibalism. What if our inability to digest certain injustices was an invitation to vomit up a new pantheon? And in an age when we are all threaded through with microplastics and blood pressure stabilizers, what does it mean to start to physically grow into new shapes around incursions we cannot properly assimilate or expel? Bayo Akomolafe (Ph.D.), rooted with the Yoruba people in a more-than-human world, is the father to Alethea and Kyah, the grateful life-partner to Ije, son and brother. A widely celebrated international speaker, posthumanist thinker, poet, teacher, public intellectual, essayist, and author of two books, These Wilds Beyond our Fences: Letters to My Daughter on Humanity's Search for Home (North Atlantic Books) and We Will Tell our Own Story: The Lions of Africa Speak, Bayo Akomolafe is the Founder of The Emergence Network and host of the online postactivist course, ‘We Will Dance with Mountains'. He currently lectures at Pacifica Graduate Institute, California and University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont. He sits on the Board of many organizations including Science and Non-Duality (US) and Ancient Futures (Australia). In July 2022, Dr. Akomolafe was appointed the inaugural Global Senior Fellow of University of California's (Berkeley) Othering and Belonging Institute. He has also been appointed Senior Fellow for The New Institute in Hamburg, Germany. He is the recipient of the New Thought Leadership Award 2021 and the Excellence in Ethnocultural Psychotherapy Award by the African Mental Health Summit 2022. Sophie Strand is a writer based in the Hudson Valley who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling, and ecology. Yet it would probably be more authentic to call her a neo-troubadour animist with a propensity to spin yarns that inevitably turn into love stories. Give her a salamander and a stone and she'll write you a love story. Sophie was raised by house cats, puff balls, possums, raccoons, and an opinionated, crippled goose. She believes strongly that all thinking happens interstitially – between beings, ideas, differences, mythical gradients. She is the author of The Flowering Wand: Rewilding the Sacred Masculine and The Madonna Secret. She is also finishing a collection of essays about navigating an incurable genetic disease and early trauma through ecological storytelling. In this riveting episode of my chat with Dr. Adam Fraser, we delve into the intricacies of performance, resilience, and the human condition. Adam is a researcher and fellow corporate speaker (and one of the best) and a bloody good, down-to-earth bloke. Through humour and profound insights, we cover a multitude of topics, including the coping mechanisms for stress, the intersection of physiology and psychology, and the challenges faced by modern-day educators. What You'll Learn: The Power of Reflection and Reset Dr. Fraser introduces the concept of the "third space," a transitional gap that is crucial for shifting mindsets between different aspects of life. This framework—reflect, rest, reset—helps individuals leave behind previous stressors and prepare mentally for what's next. Understanding Mental Challenges Explore the metaphor of "Kevin," a character that encapsulates negative inner dialogue. This concept, derived from ACT therapy principles, helps in recognising and rationalising self-doubts and unhelpful thought patterns. The Importance of Consistency Discover the consistent habits of elite performers, such as those in special forces and top athletes, and how these disciplines can be translated into everyday life for sustained success. Navigating Work and Home Life The conversation touches upon the impact of increased remote work on personal boundaries, emphasising practical strategies to create clear separations between professional and personal spaces. Key Takeaways: Reflection, Rest, Reset: Implementing a structured approach to transitioning between activities can enhance emotional well-being and productivity. Managing Inner Dialogue: Understanding and accepting negative thoughts without allowing them to dictate actions can lead to more constructive behaviours. Consistency Is Key: Continuous small efforts in the right direction are more impactful than sporadic grand gestures. Creating Boundaries in Remote Work: Being intentional about starting and stopping work can help maintain a work-life balance, crucial in current times. Resources: Book on "Kevin": Dr. Fraser is working on a book detailing the "Kevin" concept, which promises to offer practical insights into managing inner dialogue. Secondary Trauma in Educators: New research by Dr. Fraser highlights the growing phenomenon of secondary trauma experienced by educators, offering solutions to mitigate its effects. This panel brings together cosmologists, system architects, scholars, and funder-activists to explore: How do we make sense of where we are and what is being asked of us in these times?

Author Ella Ward What does the world feel like when it's ending for you, and no one else? What does life feel like when you are running away from it? This is a story that begins in a way you expect and ends very far from there. It is a story of creaking English hallways and vast Australian skies. Of hands that feel like warm sandpaper. Cicadas that sing so loudly they drown out the grief. Of white wine and an old piano and children who want their parents back from the dead. It is a magical tale of travel and mystery. And a very human tale of sex and loss and seawater and the primal joy of coming home. This is The Cicada House. She has worked in advertising for many years. This means she has a proclivity for profanity and needs help with punctuation. Her words have been published in places like Frankie, Marie Claire and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her memoir, 27 Letters to My Daughter, was published in Australia in 2022 and the US in 2023. Ella lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her husband, child, pets and neuroses. When Wholeness Arrives with Bayo Akomolafe (Part 2)Ilia Delio and Bayo Akomolafe continue their conversation about navigating the legacy of modernity and our journey into the future as a species. Bayo shares his perspective on the legacies of ingenious thought—particularly how it's seen from the West. They ask, whether we ever arrive at wholeness? And what, if anything, does politics have to do with it?ABOUT BAYO AKOMOLAFE“The idea of slowing down is not about getting answers, it is about questioning our questions. It is about staying in the places that are haunted.”Bayo Akomolafe (Ph.D.), rooted with the Yoruba people in a more-than-human world, is the father to Alethea and Kyah, the grateful life-partner to Ije, son and brother. He sits on the Board of many organizations including Science and Non-Duality (US) and Local Futures (Australia). In July 2022, Dr. Akomolafe was appointed the inaugural Global Senior Fellow of University of California's (Berkeley) Othering and Belonging Institute, where he acts as the Forum's “provocateur in residence”, guiding Forum members in rethinking and reimagining our collective work towards justice in ways that reject binary thinking and easy answers. Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comI've been waiting years to have today's guest on the show. Introducing: Cult and child abduction whistleblower, devoted father and husband, published writer and author, podcaster and host of his own YouTube channel @Iloveyoulikeone, child abuse advocate, independent researcher, avid reader, biker, gardener and farmer, animal caretaker, Dave Matthews Band concert-goer, coffee lover, and a man on a mission to expose evil and get his daughter emancipated from a satanic cult: Iain BrysonA little bit about Iain and the harrowing story we will be diving into today: In 2010, Iain's first wife and their daughter traveled from their home in The Netherlands to his in-law's home in Poland for a visit on two different occasions. On both occasions, his first wife returned completely distraught, so different in nature that he questioned whether this might be her evil twin. On both occasions, their daughter returned with multiple signs and symptoms of having been abused. In December 2010, after their second return to their home from Poland, his first wife told Iain that her family was a "cult," that she was under "mind control," that she had "something like Stockholm Syndrome," that her "dad created a red herring" so that nobody would believe Iain when he tried to get help, that she was taking their daughter back to the cult in Poland, and that Iain would never see his wife or daughter again. On December 27th, 2010, Iain unknowingly said goodbye to them for the last time, giving his daughter a huge hug, thinking they were going to the library down the street. He has not seen his daughter since this moment. After realizing what had happened, Iain avidly tried to get help, but there was no acceptable response to his pleas. The Netherlands wouldn't even take a police report, the United States told him that it was out of their jurisdiction, and Poland was out of the question. Iain filed an international parental child abduction report with the U.S. Secretary of State for his abducted child under The Hague Abduction Convention, and they told him it could take up to two years for any legal action to occur. Iain remembers thinking, “This is not a missing car or stolen bicycle - this is my daughter”. After four months, he decided that he had to demand an investigation by placing himself in the middle of it all. Iain drove to Poland and assaulted his father-in-law in the street, thinking that this would lead to a child abuse investigation of his daughter. He miscalculated; there was no child abuse investigation. What actually ended up happening was that Iain ended up spending fifty months locked up and imprisoned in Poland. He was released in June 2015 and ever since, he has been on an urgent quest to being public awareness to his story in hopes that it will lead to freedom, justice, and a heave-sent reuniting for him and his daughter. Today, we get to hear his story.  CONNECT WITH IAIN:Website: Home | Iain Avery Bryson (iloveyoulikeone.com)Purchase Iain's book on Amazon: I Love You Like One: A Letter to My Daughter, Abducted by a Cult: Bryson, Iain Avery: 9798990569041: Amazon.com: Books YouTube: @iloveyoulikeone Twitter: (11) Iain Bryson---I LOVE YOU LIKE ONE (@iloveyoulikeone) / XInstagram: Support the show
