Ze heeft een bachelor en master en beheerst behoorlijk wat techniek. Toch voelde ze zich altijd het zwarte schaap in haar opleiding. Het klikte net niet helemaal met wie zij was. Ze heeft ontzettend veel gehad aan haar aangeleerde zangtechniek, maar moest op den duur ook echt leren om weer als zichzelf te zingen. Ze ontdekte haar eigen stemgeluid tijdens een schrijfsessie en besloot vanaf toen niets anders meer te willen. Een genre of stijl kiezen Pien woont tegenwoordig in Londen en vertelt dat ze in de Engelse muziekscene veel focussen op: wat is je verhaal, wat is je stijl, in welk hokje kunnen we je plaatsen? Ik denk dat dat ook in Nederland veel het geval is, en hoewel datmarketingtechnisch natuurlijk slim is (een duidelijk ‘product' kun je makkelijker verkopen) is het voor de kunstenaar zelf soms niet zo makkelijk. Pien vertelt dat ze door de jaren heen verschillende singles in diverse stijlen heeft uitgebracht. Het duurde even voordat het voor haarzelf duidelijk was watecht bij haar paste. Ze bedacht zelf de term ‘Indie Americana', een samenvoegsel van de dingen die zij tof vindt. On this episode of Headliners, Greg sits down with RUTHERFORD ROYAL to talk about his debut EP BLEAK.Hailing from the barrier islands of South Carolina, Andrew Christopher Rutherford Royal has a deep connection with the land and embodies a non-traditionalist's interpretation of the eastern South. He writes Southern Gothic cameos which he weaves into often dark, Indie Americana. After writing and curating the works for an album he records and mixes the music for Rutherford Royal (as well as other artists) in his remote cabin studio overlooking a hidden waterfall in southern Tennessee. His debut EP Bleak is a six song collection that profiles "series of misunderstandings about love. Each track presents as a cameo which is an attempt at describing times when I have felt lost in the liminal spaces of bachelorhood or failing relationships. Indie Americana/Folk Artist Delaney Hafener reveals her musical journey.  Her ethereal voice resonates in beautiful harmony with her music.  Over the past decade, Delaney has covered tremendous ground in live performances, original music as well as touring with her band.  Before she could speak, Delaney Hafener has found the best way for her to communicate is through music. She began singing Gram Parsons and Neil Young songs with her dad, and at the age of 12 started learning guitar with an old Gibson she revived from the basement. She wrote her first songs with the help and encouragement of her mom and began cutting her teeth as a performer at open mics when she was 14. Hafener founded the indie-folk band Pandafan at 17 and found some regional success with the group. Based mostly in NYC, they've played in venues such as Mercury Lounge, Cafe Lena, The Bug Jar, Gypsy Sally's Vinyl Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, Suffolk Theater, and Guild Hall, and many others. At the height of their gigs, the young band was playing up to 5 gigs a week with frequent double-header Saturdays in the busy Long Island summer season. The Belle Curves' sound is akin to bands such as Brandi Carlile, The Wild Reeds, Lucinda Williams, and The Jayhawks. The Belle Curves is led by Delaney Hafener, formerly of indie-folk outfit Pandafan, and features a rotating cast of musicians. They have crafted a unique sound inspired by the many traditions of Americana, complementing introspective lyrics and a songwriting style that can be reminiscent of both the Laurel Canyon and Bakersfield. The Belle Curves' music touches on themes of self-doubt, progressive politics, identity, and disaffection, working to create a distinctly youthful folk aesthetic. A collection of protest music for this moment in American history, The Belle Curves' EP "2020" has been described as "absolutely brutal. If Dar Williams and Stephin Merritt started a Woody Guthrie inspired band, it would be something like The Belle Curves," according to Country Queer. Welcome to episode 2, season 2 of Canary Sessions! This week we are happy to bring you a band called The Genuine! The Genuine is an Indie/Americana band that blends harmony, heavy vocals & punchy melodies, supported by fresh rhythmic foundation. Normally I say something funny here but this time I wanted to say something a little more heartfelt...Me and Hudson are so incredibly thankful for the great response that we have gotten with this show. We just wanted to thank you all for watching, and we still can't believe that we both get to create something we love, and have people love it back. It's incredible to have amazing talented artists, and bands, like The Genuine, our past artists, and ones that are coming soon, on our show. I hope they are having as much fun, as we are having making it!
