Natuurlik is hierdie tipe gesprekke soms ongemaklik. En as jou huis en omgewing ‘n veilige spasie is waar jy nie regtig hoef te kies vir ongemak nie, kan ons dit maklik vermy. Dan wonder ek: As ek kyk na die mense om my, die mense wat naby my bly, saam met my kerk toe gaan, dieselfde plekke oefen as ek, dan voel dit of hulle maar meestal lyk soos ek. Daar is beslis nie dieselfde diversiteit in my vriendekring as wat daar is in hierdie mooie dorp van ons nie. Ons weet almal dat dit is as gevolg van ons land se geskiedenis-storie. Maar dit voel of ek uitmis op ‘n groot stuk genot wat God dalk vir my beplan het. Want dink net hoe my prentjie van Hom sou kon verander as ek meer gereeld saam met iemand wat totaal anders as ek lyk en grootgeword het en dink, die Bybel kan lees! Maar sjoe – dis moeilik om regtig kontak te maak! Ons het soveel vooropgestelde idees oor mekaar. As ek iemand sien wat ek nie ken nie, maak ek aannames oor hulle op grond van geslag, ras, klere. En dit verander dadelik hoe wyd my arms oop is vir hulle. En of ek dalk ongemerk eerder seker maak my motordeur is gesluit in die verkeer… Ek sou beslis kon sê dat my wêreld heeltemal veelkleurig genoeg is met werk en gesin en vriende en stokperdjies en dat ek nie regtig die res van die skepping mis nie. Dit is mos nie regtig nodig om te gaan soek na nog meer kleure en geure en geluide nie? Is daar enige gevaar daarin om maar net dit wat ek reeds om my het, voluit te geniet? Dan dink ek egter aan die nuwe lied wat ek al harder en meer gereeld hoor wêreldwyd: Ek staan op vir MY mense. Ek maar seker dat MY mense OK is. Die Bybel sê ek moet lief wees vir my bure – so ek gaan veg vir my buurt. Ek dink egter dat ons dalk hier keuses begin maak wat kies teen ‘n deel van God se hart? Ek wonder wat sê die Bybel oor nationalisme? Oor menswees bo ras en taal en al die ander verskille en diversiteit. Daarom wil ek jou uitnooi om saam met my te dink oor die skepping in al sy diversiteit. Kom ons gesels saam oor die prentjies wat ons het van mekaar wat ons nie eens altyd besef nie. Dalk help dit ons om saam die volheid van God se skepping te ontdek. Natuurlik is hierdie tipe gesprekke soms ongemaklik. Boeke en TV reekse  deur mense van ander rasse en kulture as ek. Ek het diversiteit gekies! En wow – ek het sooooooveel gewen! En ek is boonop nou BAIE minder ongemaklik. Ek voel baie minder skuldig. Dit voel of ek tools het om verskil te maak. Kom kuier saam. Kom ontdek die volle geskenk van diversiteit en die God wat dit uitgedink en geskep het en steeds so lief het. In this episode, Dr. Alex Chapa joins the REBEL Core Cast team to explore how the 2023 Cape Cod Trial (NEJM) reshaped practice and guideline recommendations for severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). 📖 Historical Context & Long-Standing Skepticism For decades, the use of steroids in pneumonia was controversial.Early Use: Steroids entered practice in the 1940s and 50s for autoimmune inflammation, but there was immediate hesitation regarding secondary superinfections.Mixed Data: From the 1980s to the 2000s, small studies emerged on severe pneumonia and ARDS, but the data was inconsistent. Different trials used varying definitions of “severe” pneumonia and different C-reactive protein (CRP) cutoffs, making the data “spread” and easy to “cherry pick” to support or deny a benefit.Past Guidelines: This uncertainty was reflected in official guidelines:2007 (ATS/IDSA): The American Thoracic Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America did not address the topic due to insufficient data.2019 (ATS/IDSA): Pre-COVID, the guidelines recommended against using corticosteroids in severe CAP. Annelien introduces her framework for understanding serendipity through intention, experience, and affordances, and explains the paradox of artificial serendipity - why it cannot be engineered, but only designed for.We start by unpacking the paradox of serendipity: while serendipity cannot be engineered or planned, systems and environments can be designed to increase the likelihood that serendipitous experiences occur. Annelien explains why randomness alone is not enough and why serendipity always emerges from an interplay between an unexpected encounter and a user's ability to recognize its relevance and value.A central part of our discussion focuses on Annelien's recent framework that distinguishes between intended, experienced, and afforded serendipity. We explore why organizations first need to clarify why they want serendipity - whether as an ideal, a common good, a mediator to achieve other goals (such as long-term retention or long-tail exposure), or even as a product feature in itself. From there, we dive into how users actually experience serendipity, drawing on qualitative interview research that identifies three core components: encounters must feel fortuitous, refreshing, and enriching. Onderzoeksjournalist Eric Smit (Follow the Money) en Jan van de Streek, hoogleraar Belastingrecht, duiken in het CumEx-schandaal: de grootste belastingfraude uit de Europese geschiedenis. Aanleiding voor het gesprek is de dramaserie Other People's Money, gebaseerd op ware gebeurtenissen. Belasting betalen, twee keer terugkrijgen en vervolgens beweren dat het legaal is, dat is de kern van een CumEx-deal. Via deze constructie wisten beleggers, bankiers en juristen zo'n 144 miljard euro uit Europese staatskassen te halen.  Hoe konden zij verklaren dat deze constructies legaal waren? En waarom duurde het zo lang voordat deze ogenschijnlijk ‘slachtofferloze' criminaliteit werd aangepakt?  In deze aflevering spreken hosts Sheralynn Adriaansz en Julius Ponten met Smit en Van de Streek over witteboordencriminaliteit, de cultuur van geld en macht die dit mogelijk maakt, en de onmisbare rol van onafhankelijke onderzoeksjournalistiek.  De CumEx FilesEric Smit en collega Siem Eikelenboom speelden een sleutelrol bij het naar buiten brengen van dit schandaal via de CumEx Files, een internationaal samenwerkingsverband van onderzoeksjournalisten waar Follow the Money deel van uitmaakt.  De CumEx Files leidden in oktober 2018 tot een eerste golf onthullingen. HB 4720 would prohibit the use of electronic voting systems that contain parts or equipment from certain foreign countries, while HB 5197 bans campaign contributions from foreign entities altogether. Brooklyn-based artist and sometimes New Yorker magazine cartoonist Guy Richards Smit returns to the podcast eight years after his first visit to talk about: His admitted high self-regard, paired with self-awareness, which we identify as being rare; our respective experiences and takes on artist blowhards; his history with cartooning, going back to his obsession with gag cartoons, going back to a New Yorker cartoon book he read at his grandparents' house when he was a kid; how he started making his own gag cartoons; the steps he took to build his cartoon portfolio, leading to getting published in the New Yorker after a year and a half of submitting (which is much quicker than some); the cartoon he made for the New Yorker website, the ‘Daily,' that went viral (receiving 1500 comments, not to mention other viral stats), including getting re-created in Turkish by a Turkish cartoonist; how he actually sees the cartoons as sketches for paintings (and gets quite painterly in the making of them); how about half of his cartoons are more insider-baseball-art cartoons, and the one he made that references one artist that he had in mind, although several reactions interpreted it as another artist, whom Guy actually heard from, wondering if it was about them.
