Dystopian fiction is all the rage these days. But back in the 1800s one of the bestselling books in the United States was a work of utopian fiction, about a guy who falls asleep in 1887 and accidentally time travels to the year 2000. The book, called “Looking Backward” launched political parties, communal living projects, and inspired a generation of architects and city planners. Check out the Bellamy House in Chicopee, the Bradbury Building in Los Angeles, and read Looking Backward for free on Project Gutenberg.
Baxie speaks with Steve Barton from Translator! While most people will remember the band from their 1982 hit “Everywhere That I'm Not” the story behind Steve's career is absolutely incredible! Steve has just released a new collection of singles that he's released 25 years called "Juggling Lightening: The Singles Collection". Meanwhile, Liberation Hall records has just released a previously unavailable live recording from Translator's final show before breaking up in 1986! The name of that new album is called, "Beyond Today: Live at The Farm, San Francisco 1986". And oh yeah, Steve is also working on his ninth solo album which is expected to come out later this year! But that's not the half of it! The story behind Steve's career is nothing short of amazing! Listen on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Baxie talks to Detroit rock legend Loren Molinare from The Dogs! The Dogs were a band that were contemporaries of The Stooges and the MC5 but were unfortunately blackballed for playing too loudly—louder than Iggy and the Stooges!!!! Loren has great stories that include opening for Bob Seger, meeting Kiss on their first day in New York, and sharing management with Van Halen! It's a SPECIAL BONUS EPISODE as Baxie talks with drummer Richie Onori and keyboardist Stevie Stewart from Sweet! Sweet's history is a long and complicated one. On one hand it's a band that sold more than 35 million albums with classic hits like Ballroom Blitz, Fox on the Run, and Love is Like Oxygen. Since then, three of the original members formed their own separate versions of the band—often operating at the same time. In 2008 original bass player Steve Priest formed his own versions of the band. Sadly in 2020, Steve Priest died at the age of 72. However, both Steve Priest and his family bestowed the responsibility of curating the Sweet's legacy to Richie Onori and Stevie Stewart. They not only continued as Sweet they've also recorded new material. It's an incredibly interesting story. One that offers a new take on what it means to keep a rich musical heritage intact. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee!

Baxie welcomes back Robyn Hitchcock to the podcast! In a career that has spanned well over 45 years (starting with The Soft Boys and more than 30 albums to his credit) Robyn Hitchcock would have been within his right to publish a memoir that told his entire life story. But in typical Robyn fashion he chose to do something totally different. Instead, he chose to tell the story of himself at the age of 14. The name of the book is called "1967: How I Got There and How I Never Left". Robyn takes a detailed account of the most pivotal year of his life. This is a year where he was sent to boarding school, cannonballed into puberty, and discovered the music that would set the course for his entire career. On top of the book, Robyn has also released a companion album titled, "1967: Vacations in the Past". This is not merely a record of cover-tunes from that year. This is the soundtrack of Robyn's life. While he's been primarily known for playing on every Peter Gabriel album, he's also known for his work with King Crimson. On top of that Tony has also lent his amazing talents for more than 500 other albums. And that number continues to grow. These include sessions with John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Buddy Rich, Stevie Knicks, Warren Zevon, and many others. He is also responsible for popularizing the Chapman Stick. He also been responsible for creating something known as "Funk Fingers" (Which you can hear on Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer") Tony has just released a fantastic new solo album "Bringing it Down to the Bass". He's also currently touring with BEAT--a band that includes his former King Crimson bandmate guitarist Adrian Belew (who's been a guest on this podcast), guitarist Steve Vai, and drummer Danny Carey from Tool! BEAT will be playing at the Shubert Theater in Boston on October 10th and at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford on December 3rd. Tony talks about all of that and more! Just amazing! Baxie talks to Steve McDonald from Redd Kross! “The Most Important Band in America"! The stories behind Steve and his older brother Jeff are the stuff of inconceivable legend! Since starting the band in 1978 (at the ages of 11 and 14) Redd Kross has gone on to become one of the most influential bands in Punk, Glam, Grunge, and Power Pop! Their story has not only been featured in an amazing documentary; “Born Innocent” it's also being told in an upcoming memoir entitled “Now You're One of Us”! On top of that, Redd Kross has just released their 9th album—their self-titled double album (which is arguably one of the best of their career). Steve talks all about it PLUS about his time with The Melvins, the punk supergroup OFF!, and Tenacious D! He also was part of the sessions for the first album by Jellyfish (which, as you are aware, is another one of my all-time favorites)! He even toured as the bass player for Sparks! Baxie talks to one of his all time favorites—multi-instrumentalist Harold “Happy” Chichester! Happy's incredible career began with the Columbus, Ohio based band The Royal Crescent Mob! This was a band that was (and continues to) to hold a special place in my home collection of entirely too many records. But his career hardly stopped there. He was a one-time member of The Afghan Whigs, The Twilight Singers, and Howlin' Maggie! On top of that he's release three amazing solo records. He was also heavily courted by Dave Grohl to join The Foo Fighters (an offer he turned down to keep working on his own music). Grohl has even referred to him as one of the best songwriters in America (which I agree with!). It's a special episode with a guy that I've wanted to talk to for the last 40 years. And it was totally worth the wait!!! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 app Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee
It's another SPECIAL BONUS EPISODE! Baxie journalist Patrick Clarke—the deputy editor of the British music and pop culture website The Quietus! Patrick has just released his new book entitled “Bedsit Land: The Strange Worlds of Soft Cell”. It's an incredible story of how two art school students accidentally became the most successful British synth-pop duos of the 80's. The book not only talks about how Marc Almond and David Ball took a largely forgotten 1964 single by Gloria Jones and turned it into a massive international hit (Tainted Love), the book also talks about came next! Rob opens the show this week live from Manila in the Philippines, as he is traveling for another NBA event and repping American hoops overseas. And Harper comes in on a high after the Falcons beat the Eagles in Philadelphia on Monday night! We also jump into Steve Kerr’s comments about how much Boston fans are going to come for him this season after the Jayson Tatum drama at the Olympics, and Rob feels like opposing players will feed off that energy more than the home team so they can shut them up. That also gets into the story about Derrick White getting into a fight at the Colorado-Colorado State game this past weekend. And speaking of coaches, Kerr came in at #2 on the CBS Sports list of best NBA coaches, with Spoelstra coming in at #1, and JJ Redick finishing dead last – with Rob feels is justified because he has ZERO coaching experience. Rob also has a lot of love for A’ja Wilson after she shattered the WNBA single season scoring record, and how happy he is to have more eyes on the league now. And we wonder why the Brooklyn Nets are the betting leader to land Jimmy Butler when they are hanging their hats on Ben Simmons, and where Jimmy would better fit instead. Audio of the Week comes to us from the Shannon Sharpe Instagram sex mishap and how Ochocinco responded on their podcast! The NFL and college football topics this week go from Tua’s future, the worst officiating calls of the week, the Arch Manning hype and the futures of Billy Napier at Florida and Mike Norvell at FSU. Baxie talks to the legendary John Doe from X! For the last 47 years X has been one of the most important and respected bands in America. Not only do two of their albums reside amongst Rolling Stones Magazine's list of the Top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (1980's Los Angeles and their 1981 follow-up Wild Gift), they just released the final album of their career--"Smoke and Fiction". And to be honest, it's arguably one of the best albums that they've released in years! John talks about that, their "Final Tour" (including their upcoming show at the Wilbur Theater in Boston on September 23rd), their fans, being produced by the late Ray Manzarek of The Doors, his bandmates (Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebreak) and much more! This one is a real treat! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 app for you iPhone or Android! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee!
It's a very special BONUS episode of Baxie's Musical Podcast! This time I talk with Jon Ginoli of Pansy Division! In 1991 Pansy Division became the first openly gay rock band in history! It was a band that combined an irreverent sense of humor with great songwriting, solid musicianship, relentless touring, and whole lot of fun! They're significant because they spoke to a entire population of youth who, at the time, were unable to live their lives without the fear of being stigmatized, discriminated against, or worse! Thankfully things have changed dramatically since 1991. But Pansy Division continues to play every year since! In fact, they'll be at the Faces Brewing Company in Malden, Massachusetts on September 19th! It promised to be a total blast! Baxie talks to singer Meghan Kelleher from Divine Sweater! Originally from the Boston area, Divine Sweater is a band that has spent the last several years racking up an enormous following--especially online where several of their earlier singles ("2x2" and "I Knew You Better) have racking up streaming numbers in the millions! They've even seen their music explode all over social media (especially on TicTok where they've had several million views as well). The latest album. "A Time for Everything" arrives in store THIS FRIDAY (September 13th)! They'll also be appearing at The Drake in Amherst on September 20th! There's a lot to talk about!
