Send us a textOzzy Osbourne's life was a thunderous symphony of chaos, triumph, and resilience. From co-founding Black Sabbath in 1968 and birthing heavy metal with groundbreaking albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality, to launching a wildly successful solo career marked by anthems like “Crazy Train,” Ozzy constantly redefined rock rebellion. His career was equally infamous—biting off a bat's head on stage, snorting ants, and surviving near-death experiences, including the tragic loss of guitarist Randy Rhoads. With Sharon Osbourne by his side, he reinvented himself again in the '90s through Ozzfest, which ran over two decades, and MTV's The Osbournes, which humanized the “Prince of Darkness” for a new generation. In later years, Ozzy battled Parkinson's disease and multiple health setbacks but still returned for a historic final Black Sabbath reunion show on July 5, 2025, performing seated on a bat-themed throne in Birmingham. Just 17 days later, he passed away at 76, leaving behind a legacy that merged mayhem, genius, and unexpected vulnerability. This episode dives deep into the unforgettable highs and crushing lows—from his wildest interviews and family drama to his cultural legacy and final farewell. And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world. John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath. Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Considered one of (if not THE) most influential bands in the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath also consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, releasing a string of classic albums like Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ectasy (1976), Never Say Die (1978) before Ozzy launched a fruitful solo career. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. Osbourne remained at the forefront of pop culture through his popular Ozzfest tours and his unlikely stint as a lovable TV Dad on the reality show The Osbournes. Learn more about your ad choices. The haunting final notes of "Diary of a Madman" still echo through metal history four decades after its release. Ozzy Osbourne's second solo album wasn't just eight tracks of heavy metal – it was a musical testament that would forever be shadowed by tragedy. We dive deep into this 1981 masterpiece that captured lightning in a bottle: the supernatural collaboration between Ozzy and guitar prodigy Randy Rhoads. The album stands as both triumphant achievement and poignant farewell, with Rhoads' death in a plane crash just months after its release leaving fans forever wondering what might have been. His classical-influenced solos on tracks like "Flying High Again" and "Over the Mountain" revolutionized metal guitar playing, setting standards guitarists still aspire to today.Beyond the radio hits lies a treasure trove of overlooked gems. The orchestral complexity of the title track reveals Ozzy's artistic ambitions extending far beyond his shock-rock persona. "Little Dolls" transforms from gritty rocker to something more melodically complex. "Tonight" showcases Randy's versatility with one of his most expansive solos – a bittersweet reminder of a talent taken too soon. The album's creation wasn't without drama – bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake's contributions were later erased from reissues amid royalty disputes. Meanwhile, Sharon Osbourne was beginning to take control of Ozzy's career, a partnership that would reshape metal's commercial landscape for decades.Whether you're a lifelong metalhead or discovering Ozzy beyond "Crazy Train," join us for an album that balances technical brilliance with raw emotion, inspired by horror films and exploring the nature of madness itself.
Bob Daisley: The Unsung Hero of Rock and Roll For over five decades, bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley has been the powerhouse behind some of rock's most iconic recordings. From thunderous metal anthems to soulful blues and progressive ballads, Daisley's versatility and talent have made him a cornerstone in music history—working alongside legendary artists across the globe. Early Years: From Australia to the World Stage Born in Australia, Daisley moved to London at 21, chasing a future in music. On his 22nd birthday in 1972, he joined Stan Webb's band Chicken Shack. Just a year later, he signed on with Mungo Jerry, recording the hit single “Alright, Alright, Alright” and embarking on extensive international tours. Breaking Through: Widowmaker and Rainbow In 1974, Daisley rejoined Chicken Shack, but his creative ambitions led to co-founding Widowmaker in 1975. The band released two albums: Widowmaker (1976) and Too Late to Cry (1977), earning acclaim in the UK rock scene. Later that year, Daisley was tapped by guitar virtuoso Ritchie Blackmore to join Rainbow, alongside vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell—forming what many consider the band's definitive lineup. Their explosive live shows and the album Long Live Rock ‘n' Roll solidified Rainbow's place in rock history. Blizzard of Ozz: Defining a Genre In 1979, Daisley partnered with Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Randy Rhoads to form the Blizzard of Ozz. Their self-titled debut soared to #7 on the UK charts and went platinum in the U.S. They followed with Diary of a Madman (1981), which also achieved platinum status and further cemented the band's influence on heavy metal. Beyond the Blizzard: A Storied Career After a brief departure, Daisley returned to work with Osbourne on his third solo album. Tragedy struck in 1982 with Rhoads' untimely death, but the band pressed on, recording Bark at the Moon (1983) with new guitarist Jake E. Lee, earning international success. Daisley also joined Uriah Heep during this period and launched a prolific collaboration with guitar legend Gary Moore. He contributed to Victims of the Future and toured globally, later reuniting with Moore for Wild Frontier (1987) and Still Got the Blues (1990)—Moore's most successful album to date. 1990s & Beyond: Writing Hits, Shaping Legends Daisley returned once again to the Osbourne fold, co-writing and performing on No Rest for the Wicked (1988) and the chart-topping No More Tears (1991). That same decade, he formed Mother's Army with Jeff Watson of Night Ranger, releasing several albums showcasing his songwriting depth. Throughout the 2000s, he remained an in-demand collaborator, contributing to projects with Yngwie Malmsteen, Living Loud—a supergroup with Jimmy Barnes, Steve Morse, Don Airey, and Lee Kerslake—and revisiting classic Blizzard of Ozz material. Author and Legacy Builder In 2013, Daisley released his autobiography For Facts Sake, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at his life in rock. Though he has stepped back from touring, he remains a respected figure in the music industry, continuing to inspire through studio work and guest appearances. A Legacy Etched in Rock History Bob Daisley's basslines have underscored some of the most memorable moments in rock and metal. Whether writing, performing, or mentoring, his passion for music endures. With a legacy spanning continents and genres, Daisley remains a foundational figure in the world of rock and roll. #BobDaisley #RandyRhoads #OzzyOsbourne #JohnnyBeaneTV #RockLegends #BassGuitarIcon Want to create live streams like this? Today we suspend normal operations to talk about one of the most important men in the history of heavy metal: the Prince of Darkness, the Madman, Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy had a profound impact on so many people both on and off the stage. Through his highs and lows, and there were so many of both, he always maintained an integrity and humility that made a mockery of the satanic brush critics tried to paint him with. We spin up a combined Ozzy/Black Sabbath wheel not once, but twice, to talk about our love for this guy and the genre that he had a vital part in creating. Although this album was the fourth Elton John studio album, it was also the third album released in 1971. John had released a film soundtrack album and a live album previously in the year. Madman Across the Water is a more progressive album than his previous outings, containing nine tracks with all but the final track exceeding four minutes. Elton John also had Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman sit in on the sessions for two of the tracks, playing Hammond organ. Although it went to number 8 on the US Billboard 200 chart, it did not do as well in his native UK. The mediocre results in England may be partly explained by the song lengths not fitting nicely into the 3-minute span typical of singles. Nevertheless, the album contains two singles which would prove to be amongst John's greatest hits. Contemporary critics had mixed reactions to the prog rock bent of the album, with some finding the lyrics confusing and the album as a whole too deep for new fans. As with much of the discography of music icons like Elton John, reviews would trend more positive over time. Madman Across the Water finds Elton John on the cusp of his ascent to superstardom, when his next several albums would trend towards a glam rock approach and would start regularly topping the charts.Original host Brian Dickhute returns to "What the Riff" studios to help us finish off our podcast series focusing on the Months from 1965 to 1995. Tiny DancerThe lead off track takes its inspiration from two places. Generally, it is inspired by the spirit of the women Bernie Taupin met in California, and how their styles contrasted with those in the U.K at the time. More specifically it references Maxine Feibelman, who really was the "seamstress for the band," and supported John's elaborate stage costume style. Feibelman and Taupin were married in March 1971, with Elton John serving as best man.LevonThe first single from the album tells the story of Levon, a man who is successful in the family business, but trapped in his lifestyle. "Levon wears his war wound like a crown." This symphonic piece uses a backing orchestra written, arranged, and conducted by Paul Buckmaster. Madman Across the WaterThe title track to the album was originally supposed to be a track on John's previous studio album, but it was rearranged for this album. The lyrics are about a man in a coastal mental institution who doesn't know if he belongs there or not. Many have speculated that Taupin wrote this about then President Richard Nixon, speculation to which Taupin responds, "That is genius. I could never have thought of that."Indian SunsetThe story about an American Indian warrior on the verge of defeat was inspired by Frederic Remington painting and/or a visit that Bernie Taupin paid to a reservation. John has stated that the song is not a protest song, but a story. The opening acapella verse sets the wistful tone of the rest of the song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the children's television series “Electric Company""Hey you guys!" This children's educational show debuted in 1971. STAFF PICKS:Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey by Paul and Linda McCartneyBruce begins the staff picks with a song from "Ram," the only album attributed to Paul and Linda McCartney. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1971, making it the first post-Beatles McCartney single to top the US charts. It is actually a compilation of several song fragments assembled by engineer Eirik Wangberg. The lyric "hands across the water/heads across the sky" refers to Linda and Paul being American and British.Rain Dance by the Guess WhoRob brings us a song penned by Burton Cummings and Kurt Winter which was the lead-off track from the Guess Who's eighth studio album, "So Long, Bannatyne." Randy Bachman had departed the band by this time. Many of the lyrics reference landmarks or businesses in their native Winnipeg, Canada. You Say It by Al GreenWayne's staff pick is a fusion of funk and soul off Al Green's third studio album. Green got his start at the age of nine in a gospel quartet. The lyrics from this song discuss the difficulties a guy has in picking up the phone to call his girl. Al Green became a minister in 1976 and returned to gospel music in the mid-80's.I'd Love to Change the World by Ten Years AfterLynch features a song that is the sole top-40 single from the British blues rock group in the U.S., peaking at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics express the frustration of the counter culture movement in wanting to change the world, but realizing that solutions are harder to reach than thought.Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves by CherBrian finishes out the episode with a story from Cher. The lyrics are told from the perspective of a Gypsy girl born to a dancer in a traveling show. When she is 16, she becomes pregnant from a young stranger who runs off, leaving her to raise a baby girl in the same situation as her mother raised her. When you pick up a dictionary and look up a word, have you ever stopped to consider who it was that compiled such meticulous work? Was it a scholar, or group of scholars, holed up in a musty backroom somewhere dedicating their lives to the task, or a wide group of volunteers, crowdsourcing an otherwise unthinkable workload? Or was it perhaps, a madman and murderer, working at leisure from the comfort of his asylum cell? In the case of the infamous Oxford English Dictionary, it was all of the above. Myron McCormick took home a Tony for his performance as gruff but lovable sailor Luther Billis in the original Broadway production of South Pacific, and before his premature passing at the age of 54 he logged several memorable turns on the stage and screen. We'll hear him as an archeologist who may have found a lost treasure in “Door of Gold” (originally aired on CBS on February 10, 1957) and as a mental patient who escapes from the hospital with revenge on his mind in “Madman of Manhattan” (originally aired on CBS on March 8, 1959). Plus, he plays detective in “No Time for Murder” from Crime Club (originally aired on Mutual on September 25, 1947).

The world is far more peculiar than most of us dare to admit. Somewhere between a demolition derby and a wrestling ring, between the crackle of VHS tapes and the shriek of late-night public access, lies a man who has turned mayhem into meaning. On today's episode, we welcome the unparalleled and unfiltered Mad Man Pondo, a professional wrestler and author whose life has been a whirlwind of body slams, topless TV hosts, and late-night green room oddities. With a voice still rough from last night's match, he guides us into a tale of chaos, tenacity, and triumph.Mad Man Pondo—real name Kevin Canady—is not merely a character in the ring. He is a living mosaic of outrageous stories and unshakable spirit.Raised in a reserved household, he found himself drawn to the fever-pitched passion of pro wrestling his grandparents once yelled at on their living room TV. That early spark lit a fire, and he never let it go out. As he says in this episode, “My mom still has the paper I filled out in grade school that said I wanted to be a professional wrestler.” That dream, written in crayon, would become a 30-year odyssey through blood, barbed wire, and blinding spotlights. The journey to the ring was not paved with ease. Pondo describes the brutal, often humiliating, early days of wrestling school—the beatings, the busted lips, the sheer will required to prove he belonged. He tells of how many walked away, unwilling to endure it, while he pressed on. That kind of devotion would become his defining trait. When the legendary Abdullah the Butcher told him he had the talent to wrestle in Japan, Pondo drove through the night, edited his best matches on two old VCRs, and mailed the tape by sunrise. The result? Forty-three trips to the Land of the Rising Sun.But Pondo's life wasn't confined to the ring. Ever curious, ever mischievous, he created “Skull Talk,” a public access show featuring wrestling commentary and, yes, topless women sitting on his lap.Equal parts performance art and rebellion, the show sandwiched between two church broadcasts caused outrage and fandom in equal measure. “One preacher would send me scripture every week,” he laughs. “But I knew he watched every episode.” This was Pondo in his purest form—pushing boundaries, dancing at the edge of decency, and always keeping his audience on their toes. What's perhaps most impressive is his ability to weave these escapades into something strangely noble. Whether talking about riding shotgun in a demolition derby car painted with horror icons or booking outrageous guests for the Jerry Springer Show, there's a heart beneath the madness. His creation of “Girl Fight,” an all-women's wrestling promotion, is a testament to his desire to give others a platform, to share the stage, to pass the torch. He's not just fighting for himself anymore—he's built a ring where others can rise too.And then there's the book, Memoirs of a Mad Man, a wild ride through his memories, filled with stories that make you laugh, cringe, and occasionally tear up. One story he held secret for decades—a deeply personal moment with wrestling legend Junkyard Dog—was finally shared in its pages. “I thought, you know what, let's put this in there,” he says. “It was time.” In telling that story, and many others, he transformed scars into stories and chaos into legacy.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.
HOUR ONE: More than a hundred years ago, reports described it as “the most weird and gruesome apartment in the world.” Why display an entire room full of grotesque items and open it to the public? (New York Charnel House) *** Kell's Irish Pub in Seattle has a creepy vibe to it, even if the displays and decorations inside aren't meant to be. Perhaps that's because the building started its life as a massive mortuary. (The Beaux Arts Butterworth Building) *** Early one February morning in 1897, John Mars jumped out of bed from a sound sleep, and while the smell of breakfast cooking downstairs wafted up to the second level of the house, he inexplicably grabbed his pistol and went on a shooting spree of his own family. (The Act of a Mad Man) *** A four-year-old has a paranormal experience… and the man he grew into over 60 years later is still unsure of what happened to him. (The Lady Laughing In My Bedroom)==========HOUR TWO: A Malaysian Haunted House To Sell *** The brutal death of an African slave brings a curse upon the wooden chest he was ordered to construct. (The Conjure Chest) *** In Tuscaloosa, Alabama there is a home built by slaves that is considered the most haunted in Alabama. (The Haunting of Drish House) *** Drivers are reporting strange, ghostly orbs following them on dark roads. (Haunted Roads and Spook Lights) ==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Dang Tan Ngoc is a well-known conman who has used the names of multiple dead soldiers to con veteran groups into giving him money. One identity he stole created a fascinating but dark story. (The Strange Return Of Master Sgt.
