Hey mamas. This episode is an important conversation, and we're honoured to have advocate and activist Amanda Faun (@arborandwood) as our guest. This is a must-listen for white parents especially, who may be curious about navigating those first conversations about anti-racism and ally ship.  Amanda talks to us about how teaching our children through experiential learning and exposing our kids to diversity is more important than worrying about saying the right or wrong things. We also discuss how the perception of law enforcement is shaped by racial make-up, how decolonized education is a way to reclaim a BIPOC-centred experience in a lacking standard curriculum, and how homophobia and racism go hand in hand and need to be rooted out together.  Let's get to it. xo And of course make sure you're following both of us on the 'gram:  @cheesecakeandcrying @arborandwood

Hey mamas! With Father's Day right around the corner, we thought who better to give us the dad perspective then our very own babies daddies.  That's right, they're back…again. Uncensored and um, as riveting as always.  We pick their brains about parenting in a pandemic, the surprising things they've learned about themselves since becoming fathers, and the number one thing all new dads need. But you're definitely going to want to listen for the “not-so newlywed” speed round questions where we discover some pretty interesting new facts about each other, including just who the town hoore really is among the four of us. The point is, all good mat leaves must come to an end. And that's what we're talking about today in this follow-up to our all moms are working moms series. We're bringing you two perspectives: Christy going back to working outside the home in her full-time corporate 9-5 role, with both kids in daycare, and Jenny working from the home as a mompreneur, with both kids home. Listen in as we quiz each other about what we're most looking forward to in this new phase, what we're most afraid of, and what we hope our kids take away from each of our very different careers. We also discuss how the working mom role has changed in the past few generations, and how the more domesticated dad role has evolved  – plus the surprising things they have to deal with now. And also how it's ultimately up to US to make the changes we want to see in our future job market, especially if we ever hope to create that elusive work/life balance. Hey mamas, On today's episode we hope to spread some awareness on a serious issue that, until recently, was something most of us didn't realize was happening in our very own community. An issue so important, that once we learned more about it, we knew we wanted to do what we could to ensure that parents and community members stay informed. We're referring to the issue of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation – happening right here in Durham Region. Today, we talk to Kate Moore from Safe Hope Home, a local long-term recovery program to help support survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation. Kate shares with us some of the incredible work that Safe Hope Home is doing and gives us the facts about the occurrence  of sex trafficking here in Durham Region. This is an underground issue but a very prevalent one. Kate talks about the misconceptions of what sex trafficking really looks like, points out a few local and well-known spots that are a common target area for recruitment into sex trafficking, as well as shares ways you can talk to your kids and teens to keep them informed – and most of all safe. We also discuss ways to get involved in Safe Hope Home initiatives and fundraisers, and how we as a community can contribute to the solutions.

But also how anyone who has a child with Down syndrome will tell you it was the best thing that ever happened to them. We get deep, discussing Joanne's biggest fear (it might surprise you), how she copes with her daughter being bullied (yes, it still happens, even in 2020), and how she managed to turn it around to raise awareness and change perceptions. Joanne shares her important message for other parents with children of different abilities: don't hide your story. There will always be someone who will find inspiration in it, and always eyes that will be opened from it. She also has a message for everyone else: don't be afraid to ask questions! Because someone will always be happy to share the right information. Jenny and Joanne also get super real about motherhood, in true cheesecake & crying fashion. We learned diaper genies and dogs don't mix, bedtime and floor-to-ceiling windows don't mix, and most importantly, that unrealistic expectations and children NEVER mix. We discuss our mom “fails” but also reiterate how bad moments don't make you a bad mom. It's all about adjusting those pesky expectations and shifting your mindset, not only around the outcome of a experience, but about how much your kid can handle – i.e. you can't expect an overtired toddler outside of his comfort zone to rally and behave like a model child. We have a special treat for y'all today on cheesecake & crying. This week's episode is a spontaneous off-the-cuff bonus show that wasn't part of our original lineup, but was an idea sparked by a real conversation the two of us had last week that we thought we should also have with all of you. We're chatting all about holiday and party traditions, especially the issue of PRESENTS, and contemplating  how to strike a balance between making events memorable and meaningful without going Pinterest mom overboard and spoiling your kids. This isn't a show with any great ahas or takeaways – we're still trying to figure this one out ourselves. So, have a listen and then share your thoughts/ideas/traditions/secrets with us. We need input from our village! Check us out on Instagram @jennylizpurdy and @christy_mcmillan_ to find the recipes for the truffles we tasted on this week's show, as well as more info on Jenny's upcoming Mamas & Minis Mother's Day yoga workshop. You can also email Jenny at thisyogalifewithjenny@gmail.com. xo

On this week's episode of cheesecake & crying, we tackle the fourth trimester. Both recently emerged from our second time being swept up in the whirling, chaotic, murky fog that is postpartum, we are here to tell (warn) mamas-to-be what to really expect in those first few months after giving birth. If you're currently going through this phase yourself, or even if you're a seasoned survivor, you're sure to laugh/cry along with us as we rehash our experiences and how this life-changing time affected us physically, emotionally, and even spousal-ly. As always, we're keeping it real with you guys, revealing such coveted parenting hacks as “wouncing” to forever altering the way you will look at grapefruit. We cover it all: the good, the bad, the ugly, and of course, the wonderful – that would be the part where we eat the cheesecake. xo

The photo featured here is the two of us on the ultimate mom date: a wine tour in Tuscany, Italy. Yeah, that's right.
