In this episode of Research Like a Pro, Nicole and Diana discuss the book "The Woman They Could Not Silence" by Kate Moore. They focus on the story of Elizabeth Packard, who was committed to an asylum by her husband in the 1860s. Elizabeth's experience sheds light on the injustices women faced under coverture laws and the lack of oversight in mental health institutions at the time. The hosts discuss Elizabeth's tireless efforts to secure her release and advocate for legal and institutional changes to protect the rights of women and the mentally ill. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the historical context surrounding mental health and women's rights in the 19th century. The book offers valuable insights for family historians researching ancestors who may have been institutionalized, and it serves as an inspiring example of resilience and advocacy. Economists around the world have been attributing the rise in costs of services and inflation in a number of countries to Taylor Swift's worldwide Eras tour. However, Swift herself can't be held fully responsible for some of the shifts in consumer spending habits that are influencing the prices of goods and services. There are many other macro and micro forces at play in driving spending behavior and inflation trends around the world. Tom Becker and Kate Moore are senior investors at BlackRock with decades of global macro and thematic investing experience between them. They join Oscar to discuss the changes in consumer spending behavior, the future path of interest rates, and what signs investors should be on the lookout for in the latter half of 2024.Sources: 2024 Findings from the Diary of Consumer Payment Choice, Federal Reserve July 2024; Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI data 2022This content is for informational purposes only and is not an offer or a solicitation. This episode strays away from our usual path of interviews with oncologists and health experts. Today, we're going into the world of crime and consequence. I'm honored to be joined by Kate Moore, the brilliant mind behind "The Radium Girls." This book, a personal favorite of mine, not only captivated me but also disturbed me to the core. Today's conversation isn't about your typical crime drama. It's about a crime that unfolded silently, hidden within the glow of radium, a substance once celebrated for its luminescent properties. But beneath its shimmering allure lies a dark truth—a truth that Kate's book fearlessly confronts. In an era where crime stories dominate our screens and shelves, we often forget the crimes silently committed against our health and environment. The story of the Radium Girls falls precisely into this category—a tale of betrayal, injustice, and the insidious impact of unchecked industrial practices. Join us as we discuss all of the unsettling details of this cancer crime story. Kate Moore, hailing from the UK, brings her expertise and passion to our conversation, guiding us through this haunting narrative. Cautionary Book Club: Mollie Maggia's dentist planned to remove a painful abscess from her mouth. But to his horror, her jawbone disintegrated at his touch, crumbling and splintering until it resembled ash. Like hundreds of her colleagues, Mollie had been slowly poisoned by her work with glowing radium dust. Eight months after her first toothache, she was dead. In the previous episode, Cautionary Tales told the story of the "Radium Girls". Their employers ignored the horrific side effects of these women's work, resorting to obfuscation and even outright lies to deny their claims that they were getting sick. In this follow-up interview, Tim Harford sits down with Kate Moore, author of The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women. Tim and Kate discuss how the women banded together and worked out what was happening to them, as well as how they fought back against their powerful bosses and their monumental legacy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the evolving world of communication in geology and geoscience, the importance of dialogue leads the way to deal with some of society's grand challenges. Iain Stewart is at the forefront, helping build effective communication strategies to advance the global geoscience mission. We also explore an example of empathetic, community centred dialogue with Kate Moore. A two-way conversation is critical to building the mines of the future, supplying the energy transition and supporting a broad range of geology-related societal challenges. Iain Stewart is the El Hassan bin Talal Research Chair in Sustainability at the Royal Scientific Society (Jordan) and Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth (UK). Iain has spent decades honing his communication skills, including a 15-year partnership with the BBC, but his thinking around communication continues to evolve. We talked to him about how he arrived at an approach of seeking to understand what people want to know, ultimately summed up by the question ‘how can we help?'. Importantly, he recently published a paper , Three Horizons for Future Geoscience, that uses the dialogic tool of the three horizons as a framework for thinking about systemic change and what pathways we can use to move away from the ‘business as usual' approach. The paper evaluates the current state of geoscience, particularly in advanced economies, and poses one narrative that can be used to reimagine the global geoscientific mission. There aren't easy answers, but there are ways in which we can build dialogue and seek solutions together. Dialogue and asking the question ‘how can we help you?' was fundamental to Kate Moore's team on the large EU Horizon 2020 project, IMPaCT. Kathryn Moore, Senior Lecturer in Critical and Green Technology Metals, Cambourne School of Mines, was part of the team that worked with Mineco, a small mining company operating in Bosnia. Success in the project required multidisciplinary dialogue, across all technical disciplines and with the local community. One of their big challenges was also to create enduring and effective public outreach. Through both creative thinking and a series of fortuitous and challenging events, the final product was a thoughtful and provocative book entitled ‘Of Earth, For Earth.' The book was published by the University of Exeter and is available from a variety of sources. Our theme music is Confluence by Eastwinds.

The Compendium Podcast: An Assembly of Fascinating and Intriguing Things
In 1917, the United States Radium Corporation decided to hire young women as watch dial painters by using radium paint to make their products glow in the dark. At the time, radium was a highly sought-after element, considered to be beneficial to health and fashionable in various products. However, the deadly effects of radium exposure were not yet widely known. So, what were the consequences of working with radium paint? Who were the key participants, later known as the Radium Girls? And what interesting facts or figures are associated with this tragic and inspiring story? We give you The Compendium, but if you want more, here's a list of additional resources to explore:"The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women" by Kate Moore"Radium Girls: Women and Industrial Health Reform, 1910-1935" by Claudia Clark"Radium Girls" (2018) - Directed by Lydia Dean Pilcher and Ginny MohlerSupport the showConnect with Us:

Every so often we read a book that touches us so deeply, so profoundly, that we find ourselves telling everyone we know that they MUST read this book. This is exactly what happened when I read The Woman They Could Not Silence, a mesmerizing story of a woman in the 1800's whose husband had her unjustly committed to a mental institution, her heartbreaking struggles, and her amazing triumphs. This book made me outraged and inspired and fired up, and I am thrilled to have the author, Kate Moore, on the podcast. In today's episode, Kate and I discuss: The attempts to silence women throughout history The story of Elizabeth Packard, whose husband committed her to an insane asylum simply because she disagreed with him How Packard refused to be silenced, and what she did with her voice to change the world Elizabeth Packard's contributions to women's rights and the rights of the mentally ill The law of coverture that dates back about a thousand years and whose impact reached even into the twentieth century – you will not believe this! Some of the meticulous research that Kate conducted, and her fascinating primary sources How women's voices are still being silenced today About Kate Moore: Kate Moore is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Radium Girls, which won the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award for Best History, was voted U.S. librarians' favourite nonfiction book of 2017, and was named a Notable Nonfiction Book of 2018 by the American Library Association. 9/2/1922. Twenty-five-year-old Mollie Maggia has a toothache. In less than a year, this otherwise healthy young woman will be dead. Others like her will soon follow. They'd all shared what seemed to be a dream job: applying glow-in-the-dark paint to clock faces. The paint glowed because it was saturated with radium, the wonder element of its day. And now that radium has burrowed inside the bones and lungs of the women. How did a supposed wonder element and cure-all come to be seen for what it was – a deadly poison? And how did a group of courageous young women, racing the clock of their own mortality, expose this truth? Special thanks to Kate Moore, author of The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women.
