As a parent, you are surrounded by all the shoulds, should nots, and strong opinions on how you should parent. When you are a responsive parent, it can feel like all that noise doesn't align with your values. In this episode I'm joined by Claire Felps, a counselor specializing in acceptance commitment therapy, to talk about showing up as a responsive parent in a world that isn't always supportive. We talk through a few different scenarios, walking you through some of the things we'd each consider with a client. Our conversation focuses on rules verses values, how values can open up your experience, and the need for flexibility in how we approach situations. We also talk about self compassion and the trial and error part of parenting as well as the nuance that makes parenting littles around sleep so messy. About ClaireClaire Cavos-Felps is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Maryland and Virginia, the founder of Metamorphosis Counseling, and a Postpartum Support International trained therapist. She specializes in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and applies that framework to the very real, very exhausting experience of early parenthood. A parent of four herself, Claire understands that knowing the “right” answer and actually feeling okay at 2am are two very different things — and she's passionate about what happens in that gap, and what actually helps.Connect with Claire Website: www.metamorphosiscounseling.orgConnect with Kim Grab a free sleep myth busting guide and learn more about working with Kim: https://intuitiveparentingdc.com/Instagram: instagram.com/intuitive_parenting_dcFacebook:  facebook.com/intuitiveparentingdc

Insomnia insight with Daniel Erichsen

Are you trapped in a cycle of "I must" or "I must not"? When we struggle with sleep, we often create a mental prison built on strict rules: I must take a pill, I must avoid coffee, I must not go out. In this video, Coach Daniel (Sleep Physician turned Sleep Coach) breaks down why "low stakes" are the ultimate key to peaceful nights and how you can break the shackles of sleep anxiety for good. As parents, we are all desperate for our babies to sleep. Yet we're often unsure how to support our infants to sleep in a way that feels right. Harsh sleep training methods don't sit well, but neither does chronic exhaustion. The good news is that there is an alternative: one that is attachment-focused, keeps us connected to our babies even during the night, and importantly, supports the whole family. In this episode, I am joined by Gabrielle Ferrara, a nurture neuroscience practitioner, infant sleep coach, and licensed clinical social worker with training in perinatal mental health. Gabrielle shares a neuroscience-informed look at infant and toddler sleep, challenging common myths around independence, self-soothing, and sleep training. Together, we explore what's developmentally normal for babies, why frequent night waking is protective, and how connection and responsiveness support healthy brain development. Gabrielle and I chat about: What biologically normal infant sleep really looks like Why babies need closeness to feel safe – day and night The impact of parental stress on baby sleep Common but overlooked sleep disruptors (reflux, iron, airway issues) Co-sleeping vs. bed sharing and how to do it safely Why sleep is a biological function, not a behavior to be trained Gabrielle is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New Jersey and Florida, Certified in Perinatal Mental Health and a Nurture Neuroscience Practitioner trained through The Nurture Revolution by Dr Greer Kirshenbaum. She supports parents using a nurturing, neuroscience-informed approach to infant sleep, emotional regulation, and maternal mental health. Gabrielle's own transition into motherhood deeply shapes her work. After relocating from New Jersey to Tampa, Florida during her third trimester, she became the primary caregiver to a high-needs baby, navigating reflux, feeding challenges, and significant sleep struggles. This lived experience informs her compassionate, non–sleep-training approach to supporting families. She offers 1:1 sleep support for parents of babies ages 0–3, pregnancy and parent circles, and nurturing sleep and parenting workshops. I don't know about you, but I don't really struggle to do health-related things like exercising and eating vegetables. But I've founding sleeping well on a regular basis to be a bit of a challenge. Shift work as a sports broadcaster - 2am get-ups in the same week as 2am bedtimes - hasn't helped. But fundamentally sleeping is the anti-do: relaxation isn't something you can force through with discipline or the ability to form behavioural habits. And the more you think or worry about sleep - or document it with technology - the harder it can seem to actually relax enough to nod off. We now live in a world where we're being bombarded with information about how important sleep is to our short-term daily performance and chances of long-term good health. This can be anxiety-inducing and counterproductive to sleep! In this context, I found restorative sleep coach Holly Hannigan-Mills' approach to helping people get good kip very refreshing and very useful. Holly has been helping people sleep for nearly 10 years. Taking away that jeopardy and sense of doom seems to be key and adopting a general acceptance that we won't always get a good night's sleep - but we'll be all right - is a cathartic attitude shift. The conversation also includes some very practical tips about how to create a restful feeling in the evening - including getting daylight in the morning. What it actually required was structure, consistency, tracking and creating the right environment. And the parallels to nutrition and behavior change were impossible to ignore. Topics discussed on this episode:– What I thought sleep training was vs. what it actually looked like – Why structure creates freedom – Why consistency beats intensity – How short-term discomfort leads to long-term stability – Why environment matters more than willpower – And how tracking exposed the inconsistency we couldn't see+ so much more in-between.If you want to reach out to our sleep coach - Gayden - you can visit her website here:https://www.thespaceforwhatmatters.com/Where to find me: IG: @lukesmithrdCheck out my website HERETIA for listening!!

Is it possible to sleep train your baby without leaving them to cry it out? The short answer: yes—but probably not without some tears. In this episode of How Long 'Til Bedtime?, pediatric sleep coach Allison Egidi breaks down the myths and realities of “no cry” sleep training methods and what parents can realistically expect. You'll learn: What “cry it out” really means (definitions vary so much) Why even the most gentle, hands-on sleep training methods usually involve some crying Why it's important to choose the best sleep training approach based on your baby's temperament and your parenting style Why gradual, more supportive methods may work best for younger babies—but not always for older ones How to minimize tears and set your child up for independent, restful sleep The truth is, parenting is never one-size-fits-all. Some families thrive with cry it out, others prefer a slower, gentler approach, and both can work. What matters most is finding a method that feels sustainable for you and supports your baby's development. Sleep expert Tracy Hannigan explains why understanding sleep is so crucial to our overall well-being and how we might be complicating our relationship with rest. She brings her expertise as a qualified sleep therapist to dispel common myths while offering practical insights for anyone struggling with insomnia.• Sleep is the only major health pillar we cannot directly control, unlike nutrition, movement, and social contact• The "8-hour sleep" recommendation is merely a guideline—your personal sleep need is genetically determined and varies throughout life• Sleep trackers provide interesting data but are often inaccurate and can create unnecessary anxiety about sleep metrics• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) should be the first intervention for insomnia, not medication• Normal sleep includes brief awakenings throughout the night—most of us just don't remember them• Screen time before bed may not be as harmful as commonly believed—phones and tablets aren't bright enough to significantly impact sleep• Creating "perfect" sleep conditions can backfire by reinforcing anxiety about sleep• Being present in the moment, especially in your body, naturally reduces sleep-disrupting anxietyIf you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review to help others find this valuable information.
