Welcome to The Fit Wealth Show, In the dynamic world of online business, determining the right pricing strategy is crucial for remaining competitive while ensuring profitability. The right pricing strategy can attract your ICA and drive your business Buuut, striking the perfect balance between competitiveness and profitability requires a strategic approach. Today on the show, we're talking all about pricing strategies from a financial professional view to provide insights on how to implement them effectively. So ditch that whiteboard, grab your P&L's and let's get to it, this is the Fit Wealth Show! Understanding your costs, you can't figure out where to go, if you don't know where you are...meaning you can aim for what other similar online business owners are doing, but we assume you are unique in what you offer and who you offer it to, so let's start with the cost of doing business: Fixed Costs: These are expenses that do not change with the level of production or marketing, rent, salaries, and insurance. Variable Costs: These costs vary directly with the level of production or sales, such as merchants, fulfillment of services, and raw materials Break-even Point: The break-even point is where total revenue equals total costs, resulting in neither profit nor loss. Understanding this point helps in setting a baseline for your pricing strategy. Using your financial statements to help you decide, vs. A whiteboard Thank you for listening to the Fit Wealth Show. One of the biggest problems that freelancers who want to grow and scale their business face is... complete overwhelm. One minute, you're on a call with a client, and wearing your service provider hat The next you're working long hours to deliver the work and to get them fantastic results. And you're still not earning enough to hire, so you're trying to find time to bring in new clients … mostly just posting on socials … because that's what you're "meant" to do right? Buuut, wasn't the whole point of starting your business, to choose your work hours, and NOT burn out? And instead, you find yourself working all the time. With massive effort, that doesn't match your income. You're fantastic at what you do, but you feel totally stretched trying to maintain the current workload … let alone trying to grow. I've been there. It's exhausting! But it doesn't have to be. You really only need a simple framework, with simple systems to scale. They are: 1. Strategy to design a highly profitable business that fits your life, not the other way around. 2. Systems to help you get a predictable client flow, and get excellent results. 3. Support so you can stop drowning in the day to day and free up time to work on the business, or work less. Tune in to learn more.

If you know, you know. And if you do know, you're just as bonkers excited as we are.Buuut if you don't know, that's totally fine too. Those that were able to make it along to our Live On Stage show this year were treated to the debut performance of a song, written and performed by our very own Josh van Cuylenburg. But this song was not without context. In Season 3 Josh shared a vulnerable story from 13 years ago that resulted in him losing the confidence to realise his lifelong dream of writing music (link to that episode below). But when we were planning our Live on Stage Show, we asked Josh to consider writing and performing an original song. And ohhhhh boy… HE DELIVERED. Today we are very proud and excited to announce that “We Were Here” has not only been recorded, but the song is now available on Spotify, with a seriously moving official music video that you can WATCH on YouTube. As regular listeners may know, the Coast Range Association is a member of the Forest Climate Coalition, which is pushing for strong and durable protections of mature and old growth forests on our federal lands. As you probably also know, mature and old growth forests are absolute superstars for preserving biodiversity and sequestering carbon. Both of those ecosystem services are desperately needed in the face of the twin crises of climate chaos and ongoing mass species extinction. As an added bonus, they generously offer these services free of charge, and give us cold clean drinking water to boot! What's not to love??Well, the timber industry has long viewed our public lands as an extension of their own fiefdoms, and many of our public lands managers remain fully bought into an outdated and destructive model of "forest management" that prioritizes plantation style tree stands and harvest quotas above all other values. And that's where we come in!After years of pressure from the conservation community and in the face of mountains of scientific research, the Biden administration issued an executive order on earth day on 2022(*) aimed at inventorying and protecting mature and old growth trees and forests on federal lands. This could, and I am underlining could with a giant metaphorical sharpie here, be an absolute game changer, and everyone listening should be incredibly excited about the potential of that executive order.Buuut - the devil is in the details, and the only way to get from Biden's well meaning but vague executive order to actual lasting protections for our most important forests is massive public pressure and engagement towards the federal agencies tasked with implementing that order.Enjoy the show, get inspired, and take action at https://coastrange.org/blmaction/Show Notes:Coast Range Association BLM Comment Page: https://coastrange.org/blmaction/Climate-Forests Action Page (for both the Forest Service and the BLM: https://www.climate-forests.org/take-actionCRR #45- “Fighting for Mature and Growth With Lauren Anderson”: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1046044/11295389White House fact sheet on President Biden's Executive Order on Forests: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/04/22/fact-sheet-president-biden-signs-executive-order-to-strengthen-americas-forests-boost-wildfire-resilience-and-combat-global-deforestation/(*) Note: I incorrectly stated the year of the executive order in the episode, sorry!Support the showPlease Donate to Help us Keep This Show Free!

She's 35 weeks pregnant and anything but thriving. Buuut in typical Rachel LaForce fashion, she does have some thoughts. On socials last week, I shared a video about choosing between - what I dubbed - "The Currency of Chaos" or "The Currency of Peace". Shocker: people, corporations and “politicians” MAKE BILLIONS selling you chaos. Don't give them your energy too. Obviously, this is a nuanced conversation that I could pontificate on it on for hours, but also. . . what I am sharing is not a "new" idea. There is no need (IMHO) to lament on it. The world is full of darkness and no one works harder than the devil. Er - well - Kris Jenner - I digress. The quicker, we can dial into the currency of peace, the quicker we can save our energy to fight the big fight. It isn't our job to save the world. It is our job to save our world because when each of us lights up, ourselves, our families, our communities - that sh*t spreads like wildfire. That light gives us the energy. the power to create sustainable, long lasting change. Also, full disclosure, this episode is FULL of references from the 1993 classic "Cool Runnings". What does looking after yourself look like? Facials, shopping, getting your hair done.. sexy, yes! (we like that) BUUUT how sexy is setting yourself up for the future? Here's the thing babe, a REAL pleasure-filled life isn't always about choosing pleasure in the moment.. Sometimes the pleasure you seek is beyond the scary thing, the uncomfortable thing.. You could choose ease and not make any financial investments but you won't get those big chased up gains… You can choose the convenience of avoiding personal development and not looking at your ‘shit' but you'll never step into that next level of pleasure, abundance or confidence.. Ask yourself.. What does my future dream life look like? What am I willing to do to make it happen? Episode #4: Stop People-Pleasing and Get Happy! As a recovering 'yes' person, Dr. Prianca opens up about her own story and people-pleasing and how it affected her as a child, and later on as a parent. People-pleasing forces us to focus on what others think instead of ourselves. Dr. Prianca explains how you can move away from people-pleasing and the lessons you'll learn along the way as you give heed more to yourself. What you will learn: Why people-pleasing is so ingrained in us The power of no Methods to stop people-pleasing To get started on getting out of survival mode and into your best life, book a 30-minute consultation call with Coach Prianca Naik, MD: www.priancanaikmdcoaching.as.me Follow me on social media: https://www.facebook.com/prianca.naik https://www.instagram.com/stresscleansemd https://www.linkedin.com/in/prianca-naik-md-0524a196/ Join my FREE Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/646992382603860 [FULL TRANSCRIPT BELOW:] Hello Ladies! I'm thrilled you're tuning in today! I'm going to chat about a topic that negatively affects so many of us. Buuut, the good news is…there are solutions in store for you today. People-pleasing! So many of us engage in it. If you have a hard time with boundaries, saying no, fear being labeled as selfish, seek other people's approval, and pick other people over yourself constantly, you are probably a people pleaser so keep listening! Why are we people-pleasers? People-pleasing is ingrained at such a young age. Toddlers look for their parent's approval. We learn easily at a young age that performing (often well) earns praise. Repeating words as a baby elicits applause or a smile from our parents, so we keep doing it perhaps in increasing frequency. In school, if the teachers liked us, maybe we would get good grades. Again, more fostering of external judgment and approval. We become conditioned to equate our self-worth with the approval of others. It's no surprise that as adults so highly value the opinions of others. To take it a step further, we base our self-worth on this-on people-pleasing. Self-worth, which, if you break down the word…self and worth…if we take that word literally…then it should be based on ourselves….not on others. Sense of self-worth, approval, all of those things that make us feel fulfilled and happy, we must find the answers within ourselves. Keep this in your mind as we move through this episode. Clients come to me concerned about what other people think of them; this is common in medicine where people want to have a good reputation as a physician or to be liked by their superiors or administration at the hospital-ultimately trying to garner external approval. I'm going to tell you right now that engaging in this pattern actually gives away our power. Trying to gain other people's praise only hands our power to them. Basing our self-worth on others is giving our happiness away to what's outside of us. One client was complaining about her boss who never seemed to be satisfied with this doctor's work and on top of that was inconsistent in her policies, which was unfair. She wanted to make peace with her boss and have a symbiotic relationship. But the goal of making her boss happy with her was actually majorly out of her hands. Whatever outlook her boss was bringing to the table had everything to do with her boss's narrative, not hers, and would be a certain way regardless of what this talented young physician did. We often people please as a way to avoid the discomfort of others' disapproval. It can't be uncomfortable when someone disagrees with us, or someone doesn't like us. I will remind you again that People pleasing will deplete us and take our joy away. We can't control anything outside of us. Don't forget that. We waste a lot of time worrying about something someone said about us, which was negative. Well-not everyone is going to like us. We know this logically but often get upset when not everyone likes us. To reassure you, I am going to tell you that the majority of someone's opinion of you is dictated by his or her story, not the quality of person that YOU are. For example, a South Asian client of mine-her mother in law told her husband she didn't love him bc she didn't cook him hot meals. This is insane, right? But.. that's the mother in laws story. Food = love. Not much to do with her DIL, who, btw with cultural norms, would never be good enough. So the sooner we accept other people's narratives for exactly what they are, the sooner we can find inner peace and move on with our lives! I'm going to tell a personal story here of my own journey with this. For myriad reasons, I didn't get into an ivy league school, and I probably could have. (that was my pre-coaching, pre-mindset/mind management, beliefs life). I went to Wash U in St. Louis, which is more than respectable as an undergrad institution. That being said, it went down in history as my failure. Couple that with a bit of teenage angst, getting into trouble with my born Indian parents in India, and I was the black sheep of my family for a while. I was so insecure about this alleged failure that I wouldn't make decisions by myself… I'd always consult my mother or best friend. I realized I was a people-pleaser in that I was constantly seeking my parents' approval for everything. Even as an adult, I would want their approval for my parenting choices. But of course, I'm doing things differently, taking the good from them and discarding the bad as I parent. A few years ago, I found myself wasting energy arguing with my mom, trying to badger her into agreeing with me. And leaving the conversation depleted and unhappy, I realized the solution to this was to realize the answers for what I was supposed to do were in me…not outside of me. I began to adjust my approach Now, When they don't agree with me. I acknowledge they're entitled to their opinion, and I mine. And what if I can focus on pleasing myself. Does this choice align with who I am? Does this choice empower me? Asking myself these questions helps me get out of people-pleasing and into my own fulfilled zone. Don't get me wrong, I still find myself slipping into my people-pleasing ways. But with awareness and practice, I can decrease it immensely Indian culture promotes success and having a great life on paper, so one can brag at Indian parties about it. Perhaps that's an extreme view, but that was my personal experience of my childhood and accolades or lack them. Luckily as I grew up and learned to love and trust myself in order to make decisions… (I will talk about self-love in a future episode), but notice I said learn…bc self-love and trust is often not automatic. It has to be learned and practiced. It wasn't until my 30's that I realized my entire existence had been dedicated to proving myself (another form of people-pleasing) to the world, but also to my family. Once I got into medical school, I could prove I was smart and successful. Once I married the right person on paper, I could prove I made good decisions, and so on and so forth. But even then, when I was an attending, I said yes to everything 100% of the time. I didn't want to seem difficult. I wanted them to like me and know I was a hard, dedicated worker. And if someone had a problem with me, I took it so personally, I would cry and cry for a whole day about somebody saying one small bad thing about me. That's really sad. I allowed myself to lose my own happiness to the comment of another. Today-no way…I no longer do that, and I want you to be able to do the same! One of the most difficult things for women is saying NO. Women are nurturing, accommodating, and not used to putting their own needs first. I first considered saying NO when it didn't suit me after reading a New York Times article on the power of no. I didn't even consider this concept until I became a full-time working mother. I found it very difficult to say no to people. Perhaps it was part of the narrative in my head, but I figured people thought I was difficult when I said no. When I realized that I couldn't control others' opinions of me, only my own, I felt empowered and liberated. I am recovering 'yes' person… I'll never forget my first time saying no…I was on my way home, looking forward to hopping on my Peloton, Really have found exercise to be an endorphin-boosting energizing activity. A senior partner asked me to see admission, and I was one exit away from my home… I decided, after reading any times articles on the power of no… to say no… I felt so guilty…but I did it anyway. Getting comfortable with the discomfort. This is a key to our sense of peace. And you know what? I didn't regret it. And I bet he doesn't even remember this! Practice the power of no. Saying no to self-sacrifice and you will find that With time you start letting go A few weeks ago, I found my people-pleasing creeping in. I said ok to a few places at work. I had a coaching retreat that day also. I knew it would be a major cluster. The story recently about work realized I couldn't do it had to say no and get an adjustment I would have been afraid to say something before, now no more It's constant practice and work, but it's worth it. I'm so much happier. I'm going to dive into how to stop people-pleasing and start getting happy! Acknowledgment. Acknowledge you're a people pleaser. List out all of the ways in which you find yourself people-pleasing practice saying and Getting comfortable with saying no. If something makes you uncomfortable, realize it's ok to not participate. Stop explaining yourself because you don't owe the world explanations for your choices or your life. Practice pleasing yourself. When you find yourself thinking do they like what I did or do they like me for doing that? Ask yourself if you like you for doing that. The problem with people-pleasing: It's outside of us; we have no control. We sacrifice ourselves, our own happiness for others and are left depleted. Remember, people's story about you reflects mainly on them; you can't control them. And making decisions to please them, keep in mind that no one can actually know the right decision for you because they're not in your shoes. Self-focus and trust- key components of fulfillment, peace, and happiness as well as an antidote to people-pleasing. We look outside of ourselves for approval when we need to focus on approving ourselves. It's hard. But we are in control. Instead of focusing on what others think of us, let's focus on ourselves. And you know what's funny about this? It's often harder to look within and so much easier to look outside of ourselves. So we can shift our perspective and decide to pull inward and look within. For the answers, for what is right, for fulfilling ourselves, for loving ourselves. Only then can we truly be at peace. People-pleasing Lessons: We have the answers-ALWAYS. Self-validation is of the utmost importance in self-fulfillment. Self-focus and love are more helpful than looking outside of ourselves. Let's keep that on our minds as we acknowledge how people-pleasing gives our power away to other people. Basing our self-worth on others is giving our happiness away to what's outside of us. Instead, let's turn in and consider getting our own approval. And being aware of and getting rid of negative self-talk. The people who know, love, and accept you will, regardless of you "pleasing" them. Creating ease in our own lives has a ripple effect on those around us. We must constantly practice. My Client: Before coaching: She wanted to move close to family, or so she thought. After coaching: Laser focusing on what she wanted, she realized she only thought she wanted to move to make her parents happy. The first step to remedying the practice of people-pleasing is acknowledging you're doing it. Then practice seeking your own approval. Again and again. How so? By asking yourself: Does this behavior or decision align with who I am/my values? Am I in integrity loving myself when I make this choice? Or what would I do if I cared for myself? What would I tell a friend to do? How to eliminate People-pleasing: Start small with a no. Standing guard to the doorway of our minds Mind management Look within Decide what you want and go after it regardless of what others think. The power of no
Good Morning Poptastic PodPoppers! Rub your eyes, put on your slippers, and brew your coffee because it's time for another week of PodPops from yours truly, Ginni Popaswati.Today's tip may come as a sad one for fans of S Club Seven's 2001 summer hit, because we're actually advising that you do, in fact, stop moving.I know, I know… What am I thinking right… Next I'll be telling you Kylie was wrong and you should get me out of your head. Or that the truth of the matter is, it was Shaggy. He did do it… Buuut this is more justified than you might think. When you begin to record but can't sit still, you will likely create lots of background noise whilst you're speaking or listening. This can be especially bad if you use earbud headphones with the mic part way down the cable - you know the ones I mean. The wire lays close to your chest and, as you wiggle and jiggle, it rubs against your shirt and collar. The resulting noise will do nothing but distract your listeners and it's difficult to remove in post production - believe us, we've tried. So do your best to stay still with your feet planted, avoid moving your pens and pencils around on your desk, and if you've got notes on paper, try moving them as silently as possible. That's all I've got for you today guys, be sure to come back tomorrow for the latest PodNews, and come back next week for more audio guidance from your audio guru. Cheerio! Hosted on Acast. They were proverbial as liars, cheats, and accomplished knaves. They once stole Heracles' weapons, during the time he was the penitent servant of Omphale. He punished them by tying them to a pole he slung over his shoulder with their faces pointing downwards, the only way they appear on Greek vases. The sight of Heracles' dark-tanned butt set them all to laughing, so that Heracles let them go free. But it's all fun and games until you tick off Zeus. My name's… You know what I love about humans? The contrary coincidence that we are as complimentary as we are [contrary]. In normal person speak, that is to say, we're as alike as we are different. And how is that manifesting in your earballs today? Monkey gods! My nerd brethren will be extra excited to know it's not just Sun Wu Kong. Monkeys inhabit the tropical rainforests of Africa, Central America, South America and Asia, and so the peoples of Africa, Central America, South America and Asia have monkeys in their faiths and folklores. Monkey mythology is an important part of both Hindu / Buddhist lore (India) and Zodiac / Taoist / Buddhist lore (China). In the various tales... the monkey is portrayed initially as foolish, vain, and mischievous. Yet, in each tradition, the monkey learns valuable lessons along the way, makes changes, and eventually gains redemption. The monkey thus embodies the themes of repentance, responsibility, devotion, and the promise of salvation to all who sincerely seek it. Monkey lore in India dates to at least 500 BCE and the monkey god Hanuman. Revered for his bravery, strength, and dedication to justice, he is connected to the sun, the wind, and thunder. Monkeys in general are revered in several parts of India. Monkey lore in China predates Buddhism, for the Monkey appears in the Chinese Zodiacal beliefs, believed by scholars to date to around 1100 BCE. In some parts of China, the Monkey is the "Great Sage Equal to Heaven." In Chinese mythology, the monkey god was the afore-mentioned Sun-Wukong, the Monkey King and trickster god who stars in the 16th-century book Journey To The West. Sun-Wukong is the basis for Goku in Dragonball, only one of the biggest anime franchises in the world. Monkey lore in Japan took hold after the arrival of Buddhism in the mid-6th century CE and the monkey was alternately a messenger to the gods or a physical manifestation of a god. The Monkey was thought to protect against demons as well as disease and is a patron of fertility, safe childbirth, and harmonious marriages. But not all monkeys, or thing that looked like monkeys, were your friend, though I would probably still try to pet it, regardless because -let's face it- I'm going to die trying to pet something I should have (fingers crossed). If you find yourself in the land of the rising sun, once the world reopens for safe travel, obviously, you'll want to keep a keen eye out for sarugami. According to folklorist Yanagita Kunio, sarugami are a prime example of “fallen” gods—spirits once revered as gods, but who have since been forgotten. I would have called them forsaken gods, which is twice as accurate and five times as metal. These beliefs never entirely vanish, though, and such spirits often remain as degenerate versions of their former selves, i.e. yōkai or demon. Sarugami look just like the wild monkeys, only bigger and more vicious, a subtle distinction. They can speak, and sometimes they are seen wearing human clothes as well, two less subtle distinctions. Long ago, before Buddhism arrived, monkeys were worshiped as gods in parts of Japan. The southern part of Lake Biwa in modern-day Shiga Prefecture was an important center of monkey worship, based at Hiyoshi Taisha. Monkeys were seen as messengers and servants of the sun, in part because they become most active at sunrise and sunset. Because of this, monkey worship was popular among farmers, who also awoke and retired with the sun. Over the centuries, as farming technology improved, people became less reliant on subsistence farming. More and more people took up professions other than farming. As a result, monkey worship began to fade away, and the monkey gods were forgotten. Today, monkeys are viewed as pests by farmers, as they dig up crops, steal food from gardens, and sometimes even attack pets and small children. Sarugami behave for the most part like wild monkeys. They live in the mountains and tend to stay away from human-inhabited areas. Buuut, when sarugami does interact with humans, it almost always ends in violence. Most legends follow a pattern: a sarugami kidnaps a young village woman and heroes are called upon to go out into the wilderness, kill the monster and save the girl. This puts sarugami on the same keel as trolls and brainless monsters, quite a demotion indeed. It's not all bad for the sarugami, though. While the early monkey cults had vanished, sarugami worship continued throughout the middle ages in esoteric religions such as Kōshin. In Koshin, monkeys came to be viewed as servants of the mountain deities, or as mountain deities themselves, acting as intermediaries between the world we live in and the heavens. The famous three wise monkey statues—mizaru, kikazaru, and iwazaru (“see no evil, hear no evil, say no evil”)—come from Kōshin and are a prime example of sarugami worship. Three rather famous monkeys hail from the land of the rising sun, usually referred to as "Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil, See No Evil." By the time of Tokugawa/Edo period, from 1603 to 1867, the three monkeys were portrayed in Buddhist sculptures. The message is that we should protect ourselves by not letting evil enter our sight, not allowing evil words to enter our hearing, and finally to not speak and engage in evil words and thoughts, but a lot of folks, especially in the West, take it to mean to ignore or turn a blind eye to something that's wrong. Legend has it, long ago the Buddha appeared at Hiyoshi Taisha, a Shinto shrine located in the city of Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture, about the same time a large gathering of monkeys arrived in the area. The collective noun for a group of monkeys is a troop, btw, or a tribe, or because we have the option, a carload and, yes, a barrel. You can say a barrel of monkeys. So the Buddha took the form of a monkey, and foretold the fortunes of the faithful worshipers at Hiyoshi Taisha. This appearance had been foreseen thousands of years prior by Cang Jie, the legendary inventor of Chinese writing, in the neighborhood of 2650 BCE. Of course, the legend also says Legend has it that he had four eyes, and that when he invented the characters, the deities and ghosts cried and the sky rained millet. When Cang Jei invented the word for god (神), [sfx forvo] he constructed it out of characters meaning indicate (示) [sfx] and monkey (申) [sfx] to foretell this event. In other words, “monkey indicates god.” Isn't that an intersting etymology? To reference a Twitter trend, red flag emoji, red flag emoji, red flag emoji. It's not that words *never have good backstories like that; it's that words *almost never have coold backstories. Also, if someone tells you a common word is actually an anagram, tell ‘em I said “Bless your heart,” because that's even more rare. In the Americas, the Mayans of Guatemala and Mexico worshiped a howler monkey god, or maybe a pair of twin gods, depending on the story, patron of the arts; music, scribes and sculptors. The Howler Monkey also corresponds to knowledge of history and rituals, as well as prophecy. There is a fabled lost "Ciudad Blanca" or white city in Honduras is supposedly dedicated to the Monkey God. Pre-Columbian Toltec and Maya texts call it "The ancient place where the aurora originates." In Aztec mythology of Mexico, the monkey was connected to the sun, and was guarded by Cochipilli, the god of flowers, fertility, and fun! My kinda Among the Classic Mayas, the howler monkey god was a major deity of the arts, both visual and musical. Two monkey gods or two versions of the same god, I'm not sure, have been depicted on classical vases in the act of writing books and sculpting busts. This may be a depiction of a creation story, with the book containing the birth signs and the head the life principle or 'soul.' Copán in western Honduras in particular is famous for its representations of Howler Monkey Gods. Spanish friar Bartolomé de las Casas stated that in the region of Alta Verapaz, the two monkeys were two of the thirteen sons of the upper god, and were celebrated as cosmogonic creator deities. Among the Quiché Mayas in the midwestern highlands, they were held in somewhat less esteem. They'd been turned into monkeys after getting in a scrap with their half-brothers, the Maya Hero Twins, who had top billing as far as the mythos was concerned. MIDROLL While African-Americans have had to deal with “monkey” as an epithet, peoples in Africa traditionally held primates in high esteem. The root of the word Primate, is Prime, which means first, chief, excellent, and best. Of all the wild things in the wild woods, monkeys and apes were seen as the most intelligent animals, and so they became symbols of wisdom. That's why Rafiki in “The Lion King” is a baboon, based on the baboon depiction of the god of wisdom Djehuti, Tehuti, or Thoth. Yes, Thoth is usually depicted with the head of an Ibis bird, such as on the fabulous Crash Course Mythology series, but the baboon form was popular too. In the Ivory Coast, The role of Monkeys as guardians of the crossroads or gateways to the Ancestors can also be found in the God Ghekre or Gbekre of the Baule people of the Ivory Coast. Gbekre or Mbotumbo is both judge of hell and helper of the living against their enemies. Skillfully-carved wooden statues of Ghekre were common and combined animal and human traits. Over in the old kingdom, you hope it will be a while before you meet the Egyptian monkey god Hapi. Not to be confused with another Egyptian god named Hapi, who was ostensibly a human figure expressing both male and female characteristics. One of the four sons of Horus, Hapi is depicted protecting the throne of Osiris in the Underworld. He is commonly depicted with the head of a hamadryas baboon, and it's Hapi's job to protect the lungs of deceased persons being mummified, which is why the canopic jar the holds the lungs is often topped with a a hamadryas baboon head motif lid. When embalming practices changed in the Third Intermediate Period about the 3k years ago, the mummified organs were placed back inside the body, so an amulet of Hapi would be added to the mix to still invoke his protection. When his image appears on the side of a coffin, he is usually aligned with the side intended to face north. Lung-loving Hapi wasn't the only baboon about in ancient Egypt, but he was definitely the nicer of the two. The other tended to be a little…. murdery….and a bit problematic. Babi ‘bull (i.e. dominant male) of the baboons' lives on human entrails, which is not outlandish for a baboon, as they are omnivores with tremendous fangs and a well-earned reputation for carnivoration. He also kills all humans on sight, so be sure you know the right prayers and spells to protect yourself, especially after death. Your heart will be weighed against a feather in the Hall of the Two Truths to see if you can get a seat upgrade to paradise. To his credit, though, Babi can use his immense power to ward off dangers like snakes and control turbulent waters, so, like the rest of us, a mixed bag. Baboons also have libidos turned up to 11, so send the kids out of the room now. Babi was considered the god of virility of the dead. One spell in a funerary text identifies the deceased person's phallus with Babi, ensuring that the deceased will be able to get down, make love in the afterlife. He was usually portrayed with an erection, and that erection is also the bolt of the gate between the night and day *and the mast of the ferry which conveyed the righteous to the Field of Reeds to chill with Osiris. Why, I cannot say and do not wish to Google. There's lots of good googling if you look up Hanuman, the Hindu primate deity. Hanuman, depicted as a bipedal monkey with a red face, is worshipped both in his own shrines and as a secondary figure in temples to Rama. You'll know if you're at a Hanuman-exclusive temple, because it will be absolutely alive with monkeys. You can't mistreat a monkey in or around a temple of the monkey god, which the monkeys figured out centuries ago. Hanuman was the child of the wind god and a nymph. As a little god-ling, he tried to fly up and grab the sun, which he mistook for a fruit. The king of the gods Indra struck Hanuman with a thunderbolt on the jaw, the word for which is hanu, hence his name. Unable or unwilling to behave, Hanuman was cursed by powerful sages to forget his magic powers, cool powers like flight and the ability to become massively large at will, until he was reminded of them. Hanuman led the monkeys to help Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, recover his wife from the demon king of Lanka, which is surprisingly *not modern-day Sri Lanka. Jambavan, the king of the bears, reminded Hanuman of his powers, which allowed him to cross the water demoness-filled strait between India and Lanka in one leap. The Lankans discovered Hanuman and set his tail on fire, but he used that fire to burn Lanka to the ground. He then flew to the Himalayas and returned with enough medicinal herbs to tend to all the wounded in Rama's army. For his service to Rama, Hanuman is upheld as a model for all human devotion. Hanuman is also a popular figure among Buddhists in most of Asia, with temples and even whole districts of towns bearing his name. Like a game of telephone, the farther you get from India, the more Hanuman's story changes. For example, the original Sanskirt telling portrays him as effortlessly chaste, whereas he has wives and children in other traditions. And if his exploits sounded a tiny drill bit familiar, you won't be surprised to know that he has been identified as the inspiration for the monkey hero Sun Wu Kong of the great Chinese poem Xiyouji “Journey to the West,” and Sun Wo Kong is the inspiration for Sun Goku in Dragonball, so in a way, Dragonball is based on a Hindu god. There is a wrinkle in our tale of Hanuman, and that's actual monkeys. Monkeys are wild in India, like deer, racoons, and pigeons. You might rightly surmise by the animals I've grouped them with that monkeys are routinely pests, and what pest they are. Think about how clever a racoon is, then make it an acrobat who can understand a train schedule. In Delhi, rhesus macaques have become a menace. Government buildings are practically under siege. Macaques use Delhi's tree-lined streets to swing between the buildings, damaging power lines in the process. If you're walking around outside with food, you can almost expect to have a fight on your hands. And you thought seagulls at the beach were bad. Being inside is no safe bet either. The macaques like to enter offices through open windows and destroy paperwork and generally being chaos Muppets. There are an estimated 40,000 monkeys living in Delhi. That is a pre-covid number, so it wouldn't surprise me if the macaques have been making hay while the sun shines. But then I suppose you have to factor how dependent they are on robbing humans for food, in which case their numbers may have gone down during proper lock-down, though there would have been a terrifying period of too many monkeys and not enough pack lunches. Many solutions to keep monkey and man separate have been tried and many solutions have failed. For a time, the city employed a crack squadron of the larger black-faced langur monkeys to scare away the macaques. It worked a treat, but the unit was disbanded after animal rights activists protested against keeping the langurs captive. Thankfully for the workers in the area, there is no such concern for the three dozen men who are hired to pretend to be langurs. Before you form the image in your mind, no, they're not wearing costumes, but I would pay money to see that. They mimic the langurs' barks and howls to scare the macaques away. Unfortunately, the monkeys return as soon as the primate-impressionists leave. One complication, which you see in urban animal control the world over, is that people feed the macaques. They are associated with a god, after all. The fact that feeding the macaques is against the guidelines passed by Parliament doesn't seem to enter into it. You also can't work on the monkey problem on Tuesdays. That's the day Hanuman is worshipped, so all monkeys get a free pass, and a free meal, every week. So what can be done? In a few words, not much. The government warns citizens not to make eye contact with the monkeys, as they interpret it as threatening, and avoid getting between a mother and child. If you didn't go looking for trouble but it found you anyway, the official circular recommends: “Do not ever hit any monkey. Keep hitting the ground with a big stick to make [the] monkey leave.” Bonus fact: In 2014, the government of India found that Hanuman had been issued a biometric ID card. The card lists a mobile phone number and an address in the western state of Rajasthan. The picture looks like it's from a painting and it's not clear whose iris scan and fingerprints were associated with the card. MIDROLL 2 Okay, okay, we're finally going to talk about the monkey in the room. I saved the best for last, the first name that would come to many minds if you asked them to name a monkey god, though he's not really a god, he's just incredibly powerful, or OP as the kids say, the one, the only, the triple-immortal monkey king Sun Wukong. [sfx wrestler walk-on music] Sun Wukong is the main and most enduring character from the 500 year old novel, Journey to the West. The 1900 page book about the 36000 mile journey starts with Sun Wukong's origin story, then sees him gather a five-man band --a pig demo, a fallen river spirit, a white dragon horse, and a regular human monk– for an epic adventure. Sun Wukong was born from a rock on the summit of Flower Fruit Mountain and becomes king of the monkeys that live there. He finds more than one way to make himself immortal and goes off on adventures. The idea of living forever really appeals to Sun, so when he returns, he trains the monkeys into an army to take down the Eastern Dragon King by force, so he can take his and all monkeys' names from the Book of Life and Death, releasing them from the cycle of death and rebirth. He then defeats some Heavenly warriors sent to capture him, gets a post in Heaven only to rage quit when he finds out it has no actual power whatsoever, returning yet again as The Great Sage Equal of Heaven, and committing a series of monkey-shines and outright crimes. He steals quite a variety of things, including the Heavenly Empress's peaches, the dishes prepared for an important banquet, all the holy wine, and the pills of immortality created by Lao Tzu, which kicks off a war between Heaven and Flower Fruit Mountain, whoopsie-doodles. Wu Kong is captured, but As no weapon or even lighting can scratch him, he is burnt in Lao Tzu's furnace for 49 days. This backfires on the Jade Emperor of Heaven giving him new powers and making him really angry. When the furnace is opened, he leaps out of it and proceeds to wreck total havoc in Heaven, fighting thousands of Heavenly soldiers by himself. The Heavenly Emperor asks the Buddha for help, and the Buddha outwits and outperforms the egomaniacal monkey king and traps the cheeky monkey underneath the Mountain of Five Elements. Sun Wukong stayed trapped there for 500 years, and we still haven't gotten to the journeying part of Journey to the West. The story was not only entertainment, but effectively Buddhist propaganda. Sun Wukong is far and away the most powerful power character in the story, more powerful than the Jade Emperor and all his armies, but he was no match for the Buddha. It's like if you've been reading Deadpool comics for months, then suddenly Deadpool gets beaten the spirit of Bob Ross, so that you'll want to take up painting and generally be pleasant and soft-spoken and keep a squirrel in your pocket, I don't know, this analogy got away from me pretty quickly. The story spread with the religion, as well as independent of it, becoming a touchstone throughout Asia. In Japan, the Monkey King is known as Son Goku, for example, while in Korea his name is Son Oh Gong. The story is popular throughout the rest of Asia as well, all the way to Vietnam, Thailand, and even Malaysia and Indonesia. So just how powerful is Sun Wukong? How about the strongest non-omnipotent character in all of fiction? Here are just a few of his greatest hits. He could run “with the speed of a meteor” and cover 34,000mi/54,000km in one leap, so Superman better watch his back. Sun Wukong carries a staff that can be as small as a pin or as big as a mountain, but always weighs 8 tons. He can freeze people in mid-fight, not that he needs to, control the weather, and make copies of himself. One of his abilities is called the 72 earthly transformations And that… In another myth, designed to explain their name ("tail-men" in Greek), Zeus changed the Cercopes into monkeys (from this we have the genus Cercopithecus). In still another myth, Zeus turned them to stone for trying to deceive even him, the stone was shown to visitors to Thermopylae. Acmon, companion of Diomede, insulted Aphrodite and is turned into a bird. In Greek mythology, Cercopes were two demigods brothers. They were thieves and they even attempted to steal Heracles' weapons. Zeus changed them into monkeys. This myth, inspired zoologists to name the genus of monkeys depicted in Minoan frescoes as Cercopithecus. We finally have the UFO report from the Pentagon! Buuut, it's not what we were hoping for. We'll let you know what they are saying there. And how did this guy survive getting swallowed by a gator?! This story is insane.
Good morning, Five Minute Families. I was struck by a discussion we had in our Sunday School class the other day about self-esteem, and it made me think about key concepts we must pass onto our families that are crucial for their well-being and growth in Christ. I was drawn to Ephesians chapter 6 and from there we will build our next series: “Key Truths for Families.” Let's start with a discussion about self-esteem. Self-esteem is defined as “confidence in one's own worth or abilities; self-respect.” Society tells us: “You can do it!” “Pull yourself up by your boot straps.” “Bring home the bacon AND fry it up in the pan!” Basically, society says that Americans live in the land of opportunity and you can do anything you put your mind and energies towards. Our culture tries to instill self-esteem into our children while also undermining it from numerous angles (though, that's a discussion for another time.) For now, however, we as parents need to build our children up and motivate them. Buuut, do you want to be the voice your family and friends hear - in your own strengths and weaknesses, triumphs and trials? OR, would you want that voice to be Jesus? We propose that five-minute families bring their emphasis to Christ-esteem instead of self-esteem. Christ-esteem is respect and admiration for the work Christ completed on the cross AND that He has said that He came to give us life and life abundant. Having Christ-esteem is trusting in the work He is doing in the heart and lives of His people so that we may glorify Him while He works out all things for our ultimate good. One big question we all face in life is: who am I? Our identity shapes and defines us, and our identity directly impacts our self-esteem. Our beliefs are the very core of our being - our identity - and we use those beliefs to guide us through life. Mostly, those beliefs are subconscious and are often molded by subtle influences that build up over time. Take a professional athlete as an example. They push and strive for making themselves better. It is said it takes 10,000 hours of training to obtain the skills of a professional. Athletes must have confidence in their ability to win and achieve their dreams, but they also have coaches who invest in their training, whom they must trust to guide them to successful outcomes. What a great opportunity we have to boost esteem in ourselves and our families. But, how do we do that? Is it simply having family time consistently? How much time do we spend? Do we make sure we compliment our children often to make them feel confident about who they are? How many compliments are needed to build self-esteem? Do we believe in innate talent or invest extensively in training? Five-minute families, again, we must realize that our families do not need more self-esteem; we need more Christ-esteem. Paul says in Ephesians 6:10, "Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might." "Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of HIS might." So, to cultivate Christ-esteem, you must: 1. Recognize God's strength in yourself. As a believer you have the power of the Holy Spirit in you and you are sealed by that Spirit. As Ephesians 6:10 says, be strong in the Lord. 2. Recognize that your strengths can be a detriment to your ultimate purpose in life, which should be to glorify God. Self-esteem and your natural abilities can make you more reliant on yourself alone. Do you give God praise and credit for His creating you? Are your strengths drawing you closer to Christ and your family or farther away? 3. Focus on transformation and renewing your mind. Prayerfully consider where God has you and where God wants you to be. Take those thoughts about your strengths versus God's strengths to heart and allow His word to permeate and transform you. 4. Encourage others in their walk through the strength God has given you. In many teaching areas, there is a learning technique: “see one, do one, teach one.” To help...
Most of us are pretty good at certain kinds of commitments: We’ll be true to our partners, loving and supportive parents to all types of children (furry or human), dedicated family members, and diligent co-workers and leaders. Buuut then we’ll completely drop the ball when it comes to commitments to ourselves. We get asked a lot, “How can I stay consistent when I commit to something?? It drives me nuts that I say I want to do something, and then can’t make myself keep doing it!” So, in today’s brand-new Side Chat, we’re diving into an easy adjustment you can make that will help you stay a little truer to yourself. We got into… How your efforts to stay consistent are, ironically, probably making it even harder to follow through. How to create a “menu of options” for getting things done that allows you more freedom and flexibility without throwing structure out the window. A few examples of how we’ve been using this new system, personally and with clients, and the positive results we’re seeing! Welcome to How to Love Your Body - on today’s episode we are going to be talking about WEIGHT. Yes, a topic that brings up a lot of controversy due to so many intertwined beliefs that have been created from diet culture, self worth, value etc… We get why this would be such a tender topic and we also want to address it head on as we had a lot of drama this past week after posting a couple different posts on Instagram on @thebodylovesociety We are going to go through 2 common misconceptions around weight and also share how to shift your mindset in order to see weight in a different way and have it all - wellness and freedom. Common misconception #1 - Losing weight is an accomplishment The reason losing weight, fitting into your “goal weight” pants, and posting a before and after picture on social media are not accomplishments is because it still puts ALL the focus on your body - all the focus on weight loss, all the value as a person into the size of your body. It still focuses on thinner is “better.” This could come off as harsh to some but we really advocate to stop making weight loss an “accomplishment” or “compliment” - weight loss is not a good or bad thing - but what is toxic about it is when humans feel the pressure to constantly change their bodies to fit society standards and to feel worthy. You already are worthy no matter what body you live in! No one is better than another due to a body size. It’s important to stop making weight loss something to accomplish and instead celebrate all bodies at any size. Weight not being an accomplishment doesn’t mean you can’t do all the things you want to do to feel good in your body like - move in ways you enjoy, eat in ways that feel good without restriction - you can still honor your wellness without it being about weight loss - (and yes you could lose weight / or not and that does not matter your body is going to do what it’s going to do) - the focus is how you feel in your body - that can be an accomplishment. The feeling, the positive health behaviors that feel good not forceful, NOT the number on the scale or the size on your pants. Striving for a certain number on the scale with strong attachment to the number (and obsessive behaviors that go along with it) is mostly likely a number / size that isn’t sustainable - this means you may work really hard and feel “accomplished” because you lost some weight - and everyone is noticing, complementing, and congratulating you - yes, that may feel great - super validating - why wouldn’t it!? - BUUUT - what if you gain the weight back? What happens to the accomplishment? Compliments? And congratulations? They go away! An accomplishment is not something that can be taken away from you - like graduating from a school, course, or program. - Once you graduate you can't undergraduate - no one is going to say congrats and then take it away in the future - weight loss is conditional to get a congrats - it’s ONLY if the number on the scale goes down and ONLY if you look thinner - if that changes - people get silent. What’s the shift: Un-attach yourself from a certain size / number on the scale - What would you like to accomplish without it being about or number or size? What makes you feel good? We aren’t trying to take a sense of accomplishment away from you - we want you to feel accomplished in ways that serve you - such as: “I feel so accomplished that I’m not dieting anymore and I’m eating intuitively.” “ I feel so accomplished that I made it to the top of the mountain, it felt so enjoyable to hike with my friend and move my body!” “I feel so accomplished that I added some veggies into my week with a new recipe I enjoyed.” “I feel so accomplished that I ate a delicious scone with my coffee for breakfast and for lunch I naturally craved and wanted a delicious chicken salad with all the things on it.” See how this doesn’t have to be about weight AND it can still be about wellness and feeling good - while still enjoying french fries donuts and pizza too of course! THAT is wellness without the obsession. And it doesn’t focus on making the core accomplishment about weight loss. Wellness and freedom! Common misconception #2 - Losing weight for health is different than losing weight to be thinner We get this a lot - but what if I NEED to lose weight, what if I want to lose weight for health reasons? The reason we say that losing weight for health reasons vs because you want to look a certain way doesn't make a difference is because of biology. Whether you are restricting food, working out more and pursuing weight loss because you feel you need to for your health or because you want to look thinner, your body reacts the same. Slowed metabolism, food preoccupation, binge eating etc. Your motivation, however “wholesome” does not change the effectiveness or lack thereof of pursuing weight loss. Particularly if you’ve been pursuing weight loss for a long time already - reflect on how that has gone… that’s how it will continue to go if you are focused on the weight. Also it is nearly impossible to separate diet culture from your desire to lose weight even if it is for health because we’ve been told our whole lives that weight loss = health which is often not the case. This is not to say you cannot work on feeling better and improving aspects of your health! Take on health behaviors that feel enjoyable to you, like adding nourishing foods, moving your body, sleeping more, resting, reducing stress, having more social connection - this can ALL improve your health whether weight loss comes along with it or not. One thing to mention that speaks to this misconception - @haesstudentdoctor shared on her instagram stories the other day that a new CNN article that promotes weight loss which is getting a lot of attention right now -- it was saying that losing weight does improve health (you can read more details on her page), HOWEVER the people who they studied were people in larger bodies and people in smaller bodies - who have always been THIN!! Not people who have lost weight and their health improved. Why don't they study people who have lost weight? Because they cannot find enough people who have lost weight and kept it off. Does this not speak volumes?? Yes higher weight does have correlation with certain health issues but that doesn't mean that all people at a higher weight can lose the weight and then have the same health correlation as someone who has been thin their whole lives. The correlation of health issues with higher weight Also does not consider weight cycling, weight stigma and fatphobia which have all been shown to affect health negatively. In other words, the science behind weight loss being the answer to health is highly distorted and not something you should hang your hat on. Moral of the story: take care of the body you have now and stop focusing on the weight if you want to actually improve your health!! To wrap up --- we would love to share about the UnDiet collective because we GET that weight is a really hard part of this journey and in the app we have a specific support group for this. The weight concerns support group is separate from our main community so you can share freely (and respectfully) about your concerns and struggles, get coaching on how to move forward AND if you are not wanting to talk about weight or hear others struggles in this phase of your journey you can opt out of that group. This allows you to do the work you need to do to heal without unnecessary triggers. The app is open in less than a week!! Be sure to register to get all the details once it’s available at bit.ly/tblsappwaitlist See you next week when the app and documentary are up and running! We can’t wait!

Today is Drew's birthday and the fascists at Dollar General have conspired to make DJ's schedule out of whack. It's finally here, the long awaited final week of Old Movie Month! What is time even really? For this week we WERE going to do four westerns: High Noon (1952), The Searchers (1956), The Magnificent Seven (1960), and For a Few Dollars More (1965). Buuut, Hank decided that despite John Wayne being of historical import for the genre, he couldn't actually stomach watching a John Wayne movie right now so he replaced The Searchers with Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), which is arguably a little outside the genre. But, feeling ambitious Ben went ahead and watched The Searchers anyway. So, that happened. Also, Ben watched the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven, so then he talked Hank into watching that as well. So... that's another thing. We watched too many movies and spent 2 hours talking about them and their problematic genre, enjoy. With texting sweeping the nation, a natural bi-product of this movement is the reaction of older people who believe that texting is sending us down the path to absolute non-communication or worse, the devil. The same reaction, by the way, that my Great GrandpaBlackmer had to the telephone. So is it? Of course not, BUUUT is it? Famous UCLA psychologist Albert Mehrabian who taught us about effective communication, said this: 7% of effective communication is the words we use. 38% is tone or how we say what we say. That leaves 55% to body language.

This week on cheesecake & crying, we chat (lament) about our first weekend away with multiple children, minus the dads. Our idea was to tackle the trip together: safety in numbers! Buuut, it obviously didn't go as planned. We learned diaper genies and dogs don't mix, bedtime and floor-to-ceiling windows don't mix, and most importantly, that unrealistic expectations and children NEVER mix. We discuss our mom “fails” but also reiterate how bad moments don't make you a bad mom. It's all about adjusting those pesky expectations and shifting your mindset, not only around the outcome of a experience, but about how much your kid can handle – i.e. you can't expect an overtired toddler outside of his comfort zone to rally and behave like a model child. Plus, in light of the weekend's events, we levelled up for this episode's critique segment: we decided to skip the cheesecake and go straight for the wine. #yasss xo
