This is part of a series of photos from our trip to Sicily and Oxford, UK in September 2026 Laurana's style became widely adopted—as seen in the *Fragment with a Musical Angel* attributed to Pietro de Bonitate. De Bonitate was a collaborator of Laurana and the creator of the Cathedral portal (executed in 1468); he followed the design of Baboccio da Piperno—a sculptor active within the circle of the Angevin-Durazzo dynasty in Naples. Our fragment may well originate from that same milieu, as it demonstrates an adherence to Gothic models despite the structural approach derived from Laurana. The model of the Cathedral portal also became widespread beyond the Strait of Messina, influencing a series of pointed-arch portals in Calabria. – Regional Museum of Messina Follow me on Instagram at @douglaswelch, @dewdesignphoto, and @agardenersnotebook and Pixelfed. Captured in timeless black and white, this vertical photograph invites you to take a slow stroll down a dirt trail lined with rustic wooden post-and-rail fencing. In the foreground, the deeply textured, grooved bark of a giant tree trunk anchors the right side of the frame, bringing an incredible sense of scale and depth. Beyond it, towering trees reach upward toward the soft canopy light, creating a secluded, meditative retreat within nature. Shot from a low angle in rich, detailed black and white, this photograph centers on a massive, weathered boulder nestled deep within a shadowy forest canopy. The sharp contrast highlights every crack, texture, and natural contour of the ancient stone, while sweeping tree branches and delicate leaves frame the rock from above. The soft overhead light filtering through the trees creates a peaceful, almost secret-haven atmosphere. Follow me on Instagram at @douglaswelch, @dewdesignphoto, and @agardenersnotebook and Pixelfed. This vertical shot looks up into the dramatic, winding canopy of an ancient oak tree. The heavy, dark branches twist and loop through the frame like natural sculptures, creating an intricate web against the sky. Surrounded by dense, layered green foliage and smaller forest undergrowth, this perspective gives you the immersive feeling of standing deep within a hidden grove.
