Il suo nome: Massoneria.  Ai potenti del Papato, le loro riunioni sembrano un focolaio di eresia, di cospirazione politica e di tradimento. Il Papa regnante è l'anziano Clemente XII, un uomo malato ma ferocemente determinato a difendere l'autorità della Sede di Pietro.Sente che queste società segrete stanno minando le fondamenta spirituali e politiche d'Europa. Il 28 aprile 1738, la risposta di Roma arriva, perentoria e definitiva, sotto forma di un documento destinato a scuotere i rapporti tra Chiesa e società per secoli. Il suo titolo: 'In eminenti apostolatus specula'. Una condanna che non offre scampo, imponendo la scomunica automatica a chiunque vi aderisse. In una dichiarazione rilasciata lunedì e firmata dall'arcivescovo, metropolita e primate della chiesa della Nigeria, il reverendo Henry C. Ndukuba, l'elezione viene descritta come «devastante» e in contrasto con le convinzioni della maggioranza degli anglicani a livello globale.L'annuncio è arrivato il 3 ottobre: per la prima volta una donna viene nominata arcivescovo di Canterbury, la massima autorità spirituale della Comunione anglicana e primate d'Inghilterra. Nella pratica, sarebbe la "papessa" anglicana, sebbene la sua figura non ha nulla a che fare con il ruolo del Successore di Pietro. Si tratta della 63enne Sarah Mullally, sposata e madre di due figli, ex infermiera (dal 2004 si è dedicata al ministero) con ruoli di un certo livello nel Sistema sanitario inglese come direttore non esecutivo del Consiglio inglese di infermeria, ostetricia e assistenza sanitaria domestica. È diventata "presbitero" della chiesa anglicana nel 2006 e poi "vescovo" di Londra nel 2019. È succeduta a Justin Welby, che si è dimesso all'inizio di quest'anno a causa di accuse di pedofilia. Considerata riformista, nel suo primo sermone da vescovo di Londra disse di se stessa in quanto donna: «Sono naturalmente sovversiva». Negli ultimi anni poi è stata promotrice del programma "Vivere nell'Amore e nella Fede" volto anche a «includere e sopportare maggiormente le persone Lgbtqi+».«Si tratta di un doppio rischio», si legge nella dichiarazione della comunità anglicana nigeriana, «in primo luogo, per la sua insensibilità nei confronti della convinzione della maggioranza degli anglicani che non riescono ad accettare la leadership femminile nell'episcopato e, in secondo luogo, cosa ancora più preoccupante, perché il vescovo Sarah Mullally è una forte sostenitrice del matrimonio tra persone dello stesso sesso». La Comunione anglicana della Nigeria ha ricordato i commenti del vescovo Mullally dopo il voto del 2023 della Chiesa d'Inghilterra che andò ad approvare le benedizioni per le coppie dello stesso sesso: «Un momento di speranza», furono le sue parole.«Resta da vedere come speri di ricomporre il tessuto già lacerato della Comunione anglicana a causa della controversa questione del matrimonio tra persone dello stesso sesso, che ha causato un'enorme crisi in tutta la Comunione per oltre due decenni», prosegue ancora la dichiarazione dei nigeriani. Rifiutando ufficialmente la leadership dell'arcivescovo di Canterbury, la Comunione di Nigeria ha affermato il suo allineamento con la Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON): «La Chiesa della Nigeria afferma la posizione GAFCON senza riserve e ribadisce la nostra precedente posizione di difendere l'autorità delle Scritture, i nostri credi storici, l'evangelizzazione e la vita cristiana santa, indipendentemente dall'attuale agenda revisionista». La Nigeria, che vede i suoi cristiani letteralmente sotto attacco e provati dal martirio, difficilmente infatti si appiattisce su scelte mondane che al massimo possono attirare la nostra Europa secolarizzata.La Comunione anglicana nigeriana ha inoltre invitato gli anglicani conservatori in Inghilterra e altrove a resistere a quelli che ha definito «insegnamenti empi» e a difendere la verità biblica: «Incoraggiamo tutti i fedeli fratelli e sorelle della Chiesa d'Inghilterra che hanno costantemente rifiutato l'aberrazione chiamata matrimonio omosessuale e altri insegnamenti empi, lottando per la fede che è stata trasmessa agli eletti».In realtà, nonostante il rumor generale, la nomina di Sarah Mullally non è una sorpresa. Men che meno una «rivoluzione» che «bussa alle porte del pontificato di papa Leone XIV», come vorrebbe Il Fatto quotidiano. Si tratta bensì della naturale conseguenza della scelta che compì la chiesa anglicana nel 1992, quando aprì la possibilità alle donne di accedere al sacerdozio, in netto contrasto con la Chiesa cattolica all'epoca guidata da Giovanni Paolo II. Ci vollero altri vent'anni per aprire anche all'episcopato. Ecco perché non dovevamo di certo aspettare il 2025 per immaginare che prima o poi anche una donna avrebbe aspirato a diventare "papessa".Questa frattura nella comunità anglicana - che, lo facciamo notare, in Nigeria non è marginale visto che sono stimati 20 milioni di anglicani di fronte ai 25 stimati in Gran Bretagna - continua a non sorprenderci se consideriamo anche il percorso di vita del prossimo dottore della Chiesa cattolica san John Henry Newman. Fu lui a concludere attraverso lo studio dei Padri della Chiesa che la verità non è una questione di compromesso o equilibri e che la progressiva deriva protestante della comunità anglicana era dietro l'angolo. Il predominio della libertà di spirito l'avrebbe condotta inesorabilmente a scelte mondane guidate dallo spirito del tempo. Speriamo che l'insegnamento del futuro dottore della Chiesa sia tenuto in buon conto anche in casa cattolica.
