This episode features Prof. Kevin Foster PhD from University of Oxford (UK), speaking about his lab's ecological approach to the gut microbiome and efforts to understand and predict dynamics of different species in the microbiome. They also focus on how these ecological dynamics map onto health outcomes, and how they inform interventions. In a 2023 paper, they explored the concept of colonization resistance in the gut, and why certain bacteria or combinations of bacteria are particularly good at preventing pathogens from thriving. Both diversity and composition are important for determining the extent to which a community resists a pathogen. But a microbiome may equally resist a probiotic that's introduced because the probiotic microorganism doesn't have access to a unique nutrient. How bacteria interact with each other can help determine resiliency or stability of the microbiome overall. While it's true that hundreds of species of bacteria exist in the gut, the scale at which the microbes interact locally is much more limited (on the scale of tens of species). Episode abbreviations and links: 2023 paper examining colonization resistance against 2 pathogens: Microbiome diversity protects against pathogens by nutrient blocking. About Prof. Kevin Foster PhD: Professor Kevin Foster FRS is the Chair of Microbiology at the Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford. Prior to this, he was Professor of Evolutionary Biology in the departments of Biology and Biochemistry at Oxford. Before Oxford, he had a lab at Harvard as a Bauer Fellow in the FAS Center for Systems Biology. He did his undergrad at Cambridge in Natural Sciences and his Ph.D. at the University of Sheffield in evolutionary biology. Professor Foster's research integrates the traditional fields of ecology and evolution with the latest methods in computation, microbiology, molecular genetics, and the study of the mammalian microbiome. The lab focuses on how bacteria compete and succeed in their communities and seeks to use this to manipulate gut communities for better health.

You are called to assess a pregnant woman who presents to your hospital complaining of shortness of breath. She is 36 weeks pregnant with twins and tells you she had been getting progressively short of breath over the last month but put it down to the physical effects of the twin pregnancy in her abdomen. However last night she couldn't get her breath lying flat, had to sleep sitting up on 3-4 pillows and feels that "it is much worse". On examination she has a respiratory rate of 24/min, SpO2 = 92%, HR 105/min, BP 95/45 and you can hear crepitations in both lung fields. Her initial blood tests come back showing a raised plasma BNP and a bedside ECHO is done by a helpful colleague - who says "subjectively her LV isn't contracting very well". Hi everyone, This week I sit down with Dr Faith Njue the most qualified person here in WA to discuss the rare but important disease - peripartum cardiomyopathy. (See Faith's Bio below). Join us in our wide ranging discussion which touches on the diagnostic challenges, demographics, proposed mechanisms and general principles involved in managing these complex patients. Thanks Faith for a great discussion! Dr Faith Njue - Bio Faith Njue graduated from the University of Western Australia and completed cardiology training in Perth. She undertook further subspeciality training in advanced heart failure/ heart transplantation at Fiona Stanley Hospital and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada. Thereafter, she undertook further fellowship in cardio-obstetrics at the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford (UK). She has special interest in women's cardiovascular health, heart disease in pregnancy and heart failure. Faith runs the dedicated Western Cardiology cardio-obstetrics clinic, designed to support women at risk of or with pre-existing heart conditions, through preconception counselling, pregnancy and into the post-partum period. Cardio-obstetrics is an expanding subspecialty that focuses on prevention, early detection, and appropriate management of cardiovascular disease in pregnancy. She holds public consultant positions at Sir Charles Gairdner and Fiona Stanley hospitals. She is part of the Advanced heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant team at FSH. She is the cardiology clinical lead for High Risk pregnancy at FSH. References Anaesthesia and peripartum cardiomyopathy Chapman, K. Njue F, Rucklidge M. Canada has been pushing forward legislation, getting around any elected officials and raising serious surveillance concerns. That's just scratching the surface! With the Emergency Planning Act sections 18 and 18.1 in Canada, the government already has the ability to kidnap you, destroy your property, seize your property, muzzle your speech and even KILL you! With the United Nations Pact For The Future signed on by 193 countries in September, they can shut down your bank account if you criticize the state or the narrative. They can force you into a carbon credit or social credit system. They can force you onto food rations, likely poisonous. Trump just approved 500 billion dollars for AI which will replace jobs. But of course Elon Musk has come forward to tell you not to worry. Even though he claims AI will destroy humanity and he's one of the main people developing it, he says you can always go on Guaranteed Basic Income. Also, he says you should have a carbon tax. Trump is also pushing biometrics for migrants and internet IDs under the guise of "safety." The "Mainstream Alternative Media" is silent on this. Bill Gates continues to roll out Digital IDs in Australia and Sierra Leone. Google has withdrawn its promise to never use AI for weapons or surveillance. The UK is bringing in more bank spying systems under Starmer. Facial recognition with social credit scores is being rolled out in countless neighborhoods including in Oxford UK as part of the 15 Minute City project, modeled after China. This is happening worldwide. They want you dependent on rations as they destroy the food supply and grid, forced into a digital technocracy and forced on a CBDC with social credit scores. Meanwhile, they're releasing nano-tech, utilizing 5G to both make us sick and control us, body and mind. Are you ready for what comes next? Stay tuned for more from WAM! Send us a textDr. Nikolay Kukushkin, Ph.D. ( https://www.nikolaykukushkin.com/ ) is Clinical Associate Professor of Life Science and a research fellow at the Center for Neural Science, at NYU ( https://liberalstudies.nyu.edu/about/faculty-listing/nikolay-kukushkin.html ). Dr. Kukushkin studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms of memory formation and his research has been exploring that memory is not just confined to neuronal circuits, but rather exists in all types of cells in humans and other organisms, relying on a conserved set of molecular tools.Working at the convergence of neuroscience, molecular biology, evolution, and philosophy, Dr. Kukushkin's core research program currently deals with the role of time patterns in memory formation and how these time patterns of experience determine which memories are formed, and which ones are forgotten.Prior to joining NYU, Dr. Kukushkin held a post-doctoral appointment at Harvard Medical School, Department of Cell Biology. He was also a fellow of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation for his work on the temporal aspects of protein degradation and its role in cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and cognitive disability.Dr. Kukushkin's academic work has been published in Nature Communications, Nature Medicine, Neuron, and PNAS among others. Dr. Kukushkin is also the author of a bestselling, award-winning book “One Hand Clapping: The Origin Story of The Human Mind” (Alpina Non-Fiction, Moscow, 2020), which deals with the origins of human consciousness. The book will be published in English in 2025 by Prometheus (US) and Swift Press (UK and worldwide). The book won the most prestigious book prize for Russian nonfiction, the Enlightener (Prosvetitel) Award, as well as the Alexander Belyaev Medal, awarded to the best Russian-language nonfiction and science fiction.Dr. Kukushkin holds a D. In this first episode of the CEPS Tech Podcast series on “the Future of Work and AI” we are discussing the hopes and fears in the labour market, the impact of AI on jobs and employment, and the changing task content and skills required in jobs of the future. Additionally, we examine historical perspectives on technological change and the importance of policy in shaping the future of work. The conversation highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, monitoring of psychosocial risks, and shaping the reward function of society to create a better future of work. Our host Tom Parker is joined by co-host Laura Nurski, Associate Research Fellow and Head of Programme on Future of Work at CEPS. Joining them both to help unpick this topic are two leading experts on the Future of Work and AI. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Vivien Sieber, author of the book Kino and Kinder: A Family's Journey in the Shadow of the Holocaust. Dr Vivien Sieber is a biologist. After ten years of biomedical research, she began lecturing in Genetics before her interests moved into academic development, learning technology and information literacy. She worked at several UK universities and has published around 100 academic papers. She lives in Oxford UK and wrote Kino and Kinder since retirement and is learning to make pottery. In my book review, I stated Kino and Kinder is the story of Paula Ticho and her family, and it focuses on life around WWI until Paula's death decades after WWII. Paula, a co-owner with her sister of a theater in Vienna, enjoyed great success until the Nazi takeover. We see her get her son to safety and beg her family to leave, before eventually fleeing to England. Penniless, Paula works as a matron to a hostel for Jewish girls who have fled the Nazis. What was supposed to be a temporary shelter for girls, turned into an orphanage spanning several years. Sieber uses letters from these girls, extensive research, and her grandmother's memories to create a story that helps others understand the atrocities of the Holocaust - and how this period of time negatively impacted Jewish people even if they were fortunate enough to escape a work or death camp. This family memoir is a must-read. Carole and Sally sit down with Oxford painter, printmaker and sculptor Emmett Casley. The focus? Can artists actually make a living from their art? Find out on this episode of Art Musings. ABOUT EMMETT CASLEY: "I'm an artist/painter/printmaker/sculptor working in Oxford. Initially trained in three dimensional design, I have worked within graphic & software design/illustration, then moved into exterior & landscape design over the last decade. In 2022 I completed a Masters in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes, which has had a significant impact on my work. I am a carpenter/project manager for a garden studio business but more recently I balance my work as an artist with art technician/art handling work for galleries and museums. “My work has come about whilst considering our changing relationship with the environment and those we share it with. Strong ties to a place that I feel somehow removed from, detached from the culture, knowledge and experiences of previous generations. A ‘home' I cannot settle in. Industrial landscapes reframed as beauty spots & holiday resorts, less for the indigenous, more for those visiting. I am trying to process the changes to this way of life, displaced by globalisation and free trade, and the impact that has on an identity of a people and their sense of belonging. Old skills and habits no longer passed on first hand, folklore attaining mythical status as we struggle to retain our heritage and identity.” Instagram: Emmett_Casley -- Join us! I became a full-time artist at the start of 2020, following nearly two decades in journalism and communications. I work chiefly in linocut, creating unique, limited-edition prints. I'm inspired by nature, but also by the urban environment, and my work is printed by hand in my studio at the bottom of my garden. I enjoy the bold look of single-colour linocuts, but also the challenge and effect of multi-colour, multi-block prints, even if I end up with a fresh batch of grey hairs with each one I tackle! About Carole Theriault https://www.carole.wtf https://www.instagram.com/caroletheriaultartist I'm a watercolour and ink artist based in Oxford UK. I sketch and paint daily, aiming to create bold and loose yet defined - think abstract realism. My subject matter is wide: people, landscapes, city scenes, animals, skies and illustrations. Often, there's a storyline for the viewer to ponder. I am fascinated by all manner of relationships. I use a variety of high-end archival paper and professional paints. There are several Cochrane Reviews of methods to ensure that blood transfusions are used effectively and efficiently, and that donated blood remains available for use in emergency situations. This presentation will focus on the migration of Kazakhs, Uyghurs, Russians and some other ethnic groups from Xinjiang province of China to Soviet Kazakhstan in the 1950-60s. Discussion of the migration based on analysis of the Soviet archival materials as well as oral histories of migrants will be put into the context of the Great Game paradigm, that is a struggle of great powers for domination in Central Asia. Besides the historical background of the migration, we will examine the main factors of the migration. repatriation of Soviet citizens from Xinjiang and Manchuria and settling them in the ‘virgin lands' of Kazakhstan. Main stages of the mass migration, its ‘push' and ‘pull' factors, adaptation of migrants to Soviet environment and their involvement in the Sino-Soviet ideological war in the 1970-1980s, emergence of the ‘Chinese' segments among the ethnic communities of Kazakhstan and other Central Asian republics will be other issues to be discussed. Dan Steel joins Andy and Thomas to discuss church planting. Dan is a pastor based in Oxford (UK), but with a background in church planting. They talk about why church plants fail, and what failure means. With that in mind, what is a successful church plant? Why do we see church plants as a "restaurant" rather than a "family meal"? Thomas and Andy talk about their own experiences of ministry, too - and how difficult it can be to express times of challenge. Dan references his paper in this episode. Michelle Kang serves as the Chief Executive Officer for the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a global association advocating for high quality early learning for all children. Prior to becoming CEO, Michelle served as NAEYC's inaugural Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, in which she oversaw the strategy and daily operations for Membership, Early Learning Program Accreditation, Publications, Conference, Market Solutions and Global Engagement. During her tenure, the organization dramatically pivoted to serve the field through the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, including successfully conducting virtual conferences serving thousands of educators, the first-ever Symposium on Developmentally Appropriate Practice and a virtual Professional Learning Institute that delivered more than 235,000 certificates of professional development. She has guided the substantial system adjustments necessary to support child care and preschools attaining and maintaining accreditation through the pandemic and shepherded the development and launch of the fourth edition of NAEYC's Developmentally Appropriate Practice book, a critical text used widely as the basis for quality early learning. Prior to joining NAEYC, she served in leadership roles at Bright Horizons, an international provider of early education, most recently as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Operational Strategy. Her 16-year tenure at Bright Horizons included building partnerships with leading global employers to develop and implement dependent care supports–child care, back-up care, and educational advising services. In building these partnerships, she gained a deep appreciation for the life-changing work that early educators do every day. Drawing on her experiences as the daughter of Korean immigrants, Michelle is committed to creating belonging within organizations and developing inclusive leadership and mentoring opportunities. Also an ardent supporter of higher education student development, Michelle has served as a Resident Tutor and Scholar at Harvard University and as a member of the Student Engagement and Leadership Advisory Board for The College of William & Mary. Michelle holds a Bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary, a Masters of Education in Leadership and Policy from the University of Virginia and a Masters of Science in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management from Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford (UK). She and her husband live in Maryland with their three children.

Exogene is based in Oxford UK and supported by the Oxford BioEscalator.
Can children really have acupuncture? I'm Rebecca Avern, a paediatric acupuncturist at http://www.rebeccaavern.com/ (The Panda Clinic) and http://www.thelittleacupunctureroom.com/ (The Little Acupuncture Room) in Oxford UK. When I tell people what I do for a living, a common response is – can children really have acupuncture? The simple answer to that question is a resounding ‘yes'. And I'm going to explain to you why. Firstly, acupuncture is a lot more than purely needles. It includes many other, non-insertive techniques that are both gentle and effective, and that are often used with children. These involve medical massage (specifically a system called paediatric tui na) and techniques that involve using small tools to gently stroke and tap the acupuncture channels. There are also some really useful modern innovations which are often used with children, such as small seeds which can be stuck on acupuncture points and low-level laser pens which can be used as an alternative to needles. Despite what you might think, when approached in the right way the majority of children are actually OK with having acupuncture needles! The needles we use even finer than those used on adults – they may be just .12mm thick. A skilled paediatric practitioner will have developed a child-friendly needle technique which means that the child will barely feel the needle. Also, and crucially important, when working with children, the needles are never retained so there is no need for an energetic three year old to have to stay still! A good paediatric acupuncturist will make a decision with each individual child as to which of the many tools they have available is most suitable and, crucially, which will be best-tolerated by that child. They will understand the importance of a child feeling good about their acupuncture treatments. Rapport is everything in medicine, but even more so when it comes to children. The acupuncturist will prioritise building a therapeutic relationship with the child, ensuring they feel safe and relaxed. So, hopefully, you can now understand that acupuncture is actually more than possible with children, and that there are many gentle, non-needle techniques that are used. Most kids actually really enjoy their treatments! I would like to add one more point which is not directly answering our original question but which is nevertheless hugely important. Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of many, many childhood conditions, both physical, mental and emotional. There is an ever-increasing body of research which highlight its benefits in a diverse range of conditions, from bedwetting, to ADHD, to colic, to cerebral palsy to name but a few. Finally, when looking for a practitioner, do find one who has some specialist training in paediatrics. https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA ) Mentioned in this episode: https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA )
Our existential risk – the probability that we could wipe ourselves out due to AI, bio-engineering, nuclear war, climate change, etc. in the next 100 years – currently sits at 1 in 6. Let that sink in! Would you get on a plane if there was a 17% chance it would crash? Would you do everything you could to prevent a calamity if you were presented with those odds? My chat today covers a wild idea that could – and should - better our chances of existing as a species…and lead to a human flourishing I struggle to even imagine. Long Termism argues that prioritisng the long term future of humanity has exponential ethical and existential boons. Flipside, if we don't choose the long termist route, the repercussions are, well, devastating. Will MacAskill is one of the world's leading moral philosophers and I travel to Oxford UK, where he runs the Global Centre of Effective Altruism, the Global Priorities Institute and the Forethought Foundation, to talk through these massive moral issues. Heatwaves are silent killers, and the death toll is often recognised only months after the official figures emerge. If heatwaves were named as storms to highlight the risk they pose, the dangers would be more widely recognised. Indeed, one in Europe in 2017 got more attention when it was nicknamed Lucifer, which kills many more people each year in the UK than in any storm. Heat exposure has also been linked with an increased risk of death or disability among children, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions and those who are obese. The heatwave that swept through Europe in the summer of 2003 caused an excess of deaths over the normal seasonal average. Extreme heat exposure can be dangerous for those already vulnerable to the heat, such as the elderly or those living in poorly ventilated buildings. In addition, excessive heat exposure is linked to increased crime rates, domestic violence incidents, and increased instances of road traffic accidents. In the UK, for example, one in six deaths is attributable to extreme heat. With temperatures in the United Kingdom breaking records this month, what is the impact of heat waves on your health? Because higher temperatures can pose additional challenges for individuals with Physical and Mental Health conditions. Roughly 1,000 to 3,000 people die every year as a result of heat. Stress-related conditions that are increased by heat waves are known as psychosocial stressors. These include the subjective experience of a perceived threat from hot weather and the social impact of staying outside during these conditions. The public health implications can be demonstrated by the fact that these psychosocial stressors often result in higher rates of anxiety, depression, aggression, addiction and suicide during extreme heat. Are heatwaves a consideration for your mental health? “In recent years, there's been an increasingly large body of research showing us that heatwaves exacerbate outcomes for those with underlying psychiatric illnesses,” says Dr Laurence Wainwright, (University of Oxford UK). Rates of suicides go up, and for those with existing conditions, symptoms can be intensified” he adds, noting that for people with conditions such as bipolar disorder, extreme heat can trigger manic phases. Prof Tahseen Jafry, Glasgow Caledonian University, said: “With increased temperature rises, there is evidence to show that there are more frequent visits to hospitals for mental health, mental illnesses and behavioural and mood disorders.” A study published in 2007 found a 3.8% increase in suicide rates for every 1C rise in average temperature above 18C. Researchers also found that higher temperatures are associated with increased aggression and violence – possibly due to the impact on various hormones – and can affect cognitive function, leaving people feeling fuzzy-headed. In Australia, where suicide rates were found to be higher on days when temperatures reached above 20 °C (68 °F). Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Fiction Writing Retreat: Ink in the Abbey, published by atb on May 24, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I'm running a retreat for writers of EA fiction. Why? Because fiction can communicate ideas and inspire action, and yet EA fiction is surprisingly scarce. So I want to give aspiring writers of EA fiction an opportunity to do two things. First, to hone their craft. Second, to reflect on the role that writing plays in their lives and in their attempts to make the world better. I hope that some people will emerge from this retreat with a desire to write more and the skills to do so. Participants will spend six days in a beautiful old building near Oxford (UK) writing, engaging in peer feedback, and receiving mentorship from a professional (though this final element of things is yet to be arranged). The retreat will take place from September 15th to September 20th. The event will be free for participants, and travel, food and accommodation will be paid for. If you might be interested in coming along then read on. If you're interested but feel like an imposter in some way then please read on anyway; I would love to receive your application. What (Is EA Fiction)? I don't like the phrase "EA fiction", even if I find myself using it as a shorthand. I think this phrase lends itself to three misreadings. Misreading 1 (Identity). I don't care whether a piece of fiction is written by someone who identifies as an effective altruist. What I want to see more of is not fiction written by members of a particular social movement but rather fiction that explores certain ideas. Misreading 2 (Endorsement). Nor is my interest restricted to writing that endorses "standard" EA views. Indeed, I myself reject some views that are popular in EA, and I feel uncertain about others. What I care about is sincere and thoughtful engagement with EA themes, which can involve criticism as much as endorsement. Misreading 3 (Subject Matter). Finally, I'm not interested only in fiction that explicitly explores EA themes. I think that fiction is often at its most honest and engaging when plot or character comes first and theme emerges organically from these and from the writer's viewpoint on the world. So what do I mean by EA fiction? I mean fiction that is influenced, perhaps explicitly or perhaps subtly, by a sincere and thoughtful engagement with at least one of: The notions of altruism and compassion; The idea that reason and evidence can play a role in altruistic action; or Any of the more specific views that are oft discussed in EA circles. That might seem irritatingly vague, but I prefer to be vague rather than discourage people from thinking outside whatever box I draw. Basically, if you feel uncertain about whether I'd consider something to be EA fiction then err on the side of assuming I would. Who (Should Apply)? You. Well, maybe not, I guess, if you've only read this far out of curiosity and actually have no interest in writing. But if you write, or think you'd like to start writing, then why not apply? You don't have to be a professional, or have publications, or have been writing for years, or consider yourself an EA, or have an extensive portfolio, or. As long as you can pull together a 3000 word writing sample by the deadline, then we'd love to have you apply (you'll also need to be over 18 for the entirety of the retreat, I'm afraid, and your writing will need to be in English). (The 3000 words assumes you're writing prose. If you're writing poetry, or comics, or plays, or whatever else then there's no strict guidelines; just feel free to make your best guess about what would be a reasonable equivalent, or drop me a message if you want to clarify a specific case.) As above, people who would like to apply but feel like an imposter are especially encouraged to apply! What (Will The Ret...

The Cu-Au porphyries in British Columbia, Canada vary in setting, size, age and grade, and occur in a region with a complex tectonic history. This episode is about these systems and the key factors in their origin which also guide modern exploration. Our guests are also all authors in the recent CIM volume on porphyry deposits of the northwestern Cordillera.Mitch Mihalynuk (DEEP TIME Research Group, Oxford UK and British Columbia Geological Survey) introduces the episode by discussing the complicated tectonic setting of the northwestern Cordillera, specifically the well-mineralized Quesnel and Stikine terranes. From this introduction we learn about the southern Quesnel terrane from consulting geologist Joanna Lipske, with a focus on the New Afton deposit from the setting to the ‘rediscovery story' to exploration. Joanna touches on the importance of many exploration techniques for porphyry deposits in southern BC and why there is no "silver bullet" exploration technique.Lastly, Gayle Febbo (Kingfisher Metals Corp.) takes us through some large porphyry deposits of the Golden Triangle in the northern Stikine terrane, discussing the importance of structure and magmatic affinity in the deposits of the KSM district.Theme music is Confluence by Eastwindseastwindsmusic.com

Today's episode may seem like a bit of a detour from our usual bookseller interview, but you can rest assured, it's guided by the same love for independent bookshops. In November 2020, a new chapter began for UK indie booksellers with the opening of Bookshop.org. The platform prides itself with ethical and transparent book e-commerce that celebrates independent bookshops and with reading lists curated by writers, booksellers and voracious readers. Shops can customize their virtual window and their owners get 30% of the book sales they make here. Our guest today is Mark Thornton, the UK Partnership Manager for Bookshop.org. Mark is the co-founder of Mostly Books, an award-winning indie bookshop in Abingdon, which he sold in 2017. He then became a bookshop mentor and soon after, joined Bookshop.org. He has a background in computer engineering and tried his hand at several jobs that may seem world-apart from his current mission, but actually make it all the more exciting for us to connect the dots. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gotbooks/message
