Our communities are going through a VERY difficult time right now. So, I'm going to talk to you a bit about being black, and it's going to be uncomfortable. The fact that the subject of being black is even an uncomfortable topic is the EXACT reason why you need to listen. It's the exact reason why I need to talk. So, yes, this is going to be uncomfortable. And, that is the point. It can no longer be uncomfortable for only US. We need EVERYONE to have this conversation. In this first discussion of what may need to be many, I'll share some of my own experiences, discuss "The Talk," and touch on the police brutality that has spurred the Black Lives Matter movement. And, then, I'll leave you with some homework and advice on how--in particular white people--can help the cause. You'll hear some frank post-recording conversation of our candid thoughts between my Finding Florida co-host, Glenn, and I caught on our mics about how we are feeling with everything going on. Then, Glenn joins me officially as a guest to circle back around to how we plan for now and for the future. Glenn took charge of his business goals and processes VERY early, not only pivoting how they approached their clients and sponsors, but, more impressively becoming a leader for the entire equine industry. He has become "Corona Glenn," keeping listeners and the entire community regularly updated on how Coronavirus specifically impacts their lifestyles and industry's economy. He is a true example of being a strong leader and just taking action when faced with the unexpected. In particular, if you are in a position of leadership and/or are a business owner, you'll find his perspective very insightful.Things with Coronavirus are moving so fast. Former two-time boxing heavyweight champion of the world, Shannon Briggs, joins the show today. He's had 60 wins, 6 draws, and just 1 loss over his career with 53 KOs. After moving to Florida about 20 years ago, Mr. Briggs lives near Miami in Pembroke Pines and will be debuting (as soon as all of this is over) in his first bare-knuckle fight. We chat about why he is shifting toward tackling a new division of fighting and how he's adjusting his training in the age of coronavirus--especially in light of his particular health concern. Then, we'll get into how he's used the ring to overcome the many difficulties in his past and how he's looking toward the future and training others. Plus, he shares the story of getting roped into filming Bad Boys II with Will Smith in the mean streets of Miami.Things with Coronavirus are moving so fast. I'll introduce you to my friend, Andrew Carey, who will share his firsthand account of struggling through and then surviving coronavirus. After spending a few days in the hospital, Andrew took to Facebook Live to tell his story and then graciously agreed to share it here as well. He discusses his varying stages of symptoms, barely making it to the hospital, and his road to recovery. Think the first sign and symptom of COVID-19 is a fever? Well, Andrew's story will cause you to rethink that. AND his experience will answer as many questions as it opens up. Then, if you're getting into video games while in quarantine, he shares his PS4 ID at the end, so you can hang out with him virtually after listening! I'll introduce you to a musician out of West Palm Beach, Rae Marks, who is carving a path for herself and her band where south Florida's music scene meets our craft beer bar venue trend. Then, my guest storyteller, Dan Delgado from Coconut Creek, tells us of a business woman's life journey that started with her owning a brothel and ends in a way you won't believe! And, if you listen all the way to the end, I'll share another slice of my all-over-the-place life story that relates back to what you've already heard. I'll introduce you to two people I feel very privileged to know. First up, we'll meet Chris Krimitsos from Tampa Bay, founder of Podfest Multimedia Expo, among many other accomplishments. He has impacted so many lives, businesses, and industries in Florida, that if you don't know him, you need to. And, he's going to discuss how he's translated his own life lessons into a story he shares in his new book, Start Ugly. Then, our storyteller today is Wilkine Brutus from West Palm Beach, a reporter with the Palm Beach Post who interviewed his mother, Paulette Francois, for a podcast project he did called A Boat A Voyage. It's her story of landing in Florida after her treacherous journey immigrating from Haiti. And, there are some interesting common threads between the subjects of this podcast--immigration, faith, ambition, and perseverance. And, at the end, I'll share personal story of how I relate in particular to one of these people. So, stay tuned for that extra tid-bit. Today, I'll introduce you to Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant--a cartoonist from West Palm Beach. He's a son of Haitian immigrants who has chartered a path to success through his paint, pen, and pencils as the artist and founder of Treal Toonz. Then, our storyteller is Denyse Cunningham, Curator from Ft. Lauderdale's Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. She'll be telling us about how the family behind one of Florida's most iconic historic estates--the Birches and the Bartletts--helped preserve a bit of Florida's natural history. And, at the end, I'll share another personal story pulled from my life. But, in what I can only imagine will be a rarity, the story I'm sharing actually ties in BOTH of today's guests. It was a Christmas miracle I experienced last year, and it's the perfect way to kick off a holiday season full of giving thanks. I'll introduce you to award-winning public speaker, Alexa Rose Carlin, who originates out of Fort Lauderdale. She's overcome a LOT and has now built a legacy of empowering women through conferences, one of which I had the pleasure of being part of this past weekend. Then, my guest storyteller, Andrea Gonzmart Williams, represents the 5th generation of ownership of Florida's oldest restaurant--the Columbia. And, she is going to share the story of Casimiro Hernandez, Sr.--the 1st generation and founder of the Columbia--and his legacy. And, at the end, you'll get to hear a story from my life that relates to something else you've heard in the show. Now, this episode ends up being the perfect time for me to share the story that is probably the one I get asked to tell the most; however, it's also still the one that I don't think enough people know--the story of my lung. Today, you're going to meet Charlotte Merle-Smith from Ocala—a badass horse girl who never let her broken back break HER. She has a spirit of steel and biceps born from CrossFit (and she could totally kick my ass whenever she wants). Now, a para-equestrian, Charlotte relives the day of her accident and shares where she gets her sense of resilience. Then, our storyteller for today's episode joins us. Did you grow up drinking McArthur milk, like I did? Well, Cidelca, a tour guide for La Perle De Miami, gives us the backstory of how the man behind the milk left his legacy on south Florida. And, in the spirit of Halloween, I'll introduce you to the story of a man from Naples who's repeatedly made viral headlines for all the creepiest of reasons: Wrinkles the Clown. Welcome to my first solo podcast in two years!! I'm embarking on a journey to meet the People of Florida who make up our diverse state. They are the people you've heard about (or will hear about soon) and the people behind the stories from Florida that have made national headlines. And, with a rotating lineup of impressive reporting partners from across the state as guest storytellers, we'll discover it all--the past, the present, and those people moving us ahead into the future!! Who were those hidden figures of history who helped influence the landscape of our state well before the modern-day influencer concept? Who are the personalities behind the stories making current headlines? And, who are Florida's modern-day visionaries? Since my first days hosting Curve the Cube in 2014, I have simply been FASCINATED by the people of Florida. And on this show, I'll bring you the good, the bad, and the "needs room for improvement."In the first episode, I'll introduce you to an aura reader out of Boynton Beach who is currently embarking on her OWN podcasting adventure, Mystic Michaela.
