In this episode, we dive into Michael Bay's divisive directorial style—think Tony Scott vibes with the early sparks of Bayhem—and unpack the explosive chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence that defines this 90s gem. From the era's love for bold colors to action-packed nostalgia, we cover it all. Plus, we stir the pot with our hot take: Bad Boys II might just be the weakest in the franchise (minority opinion alert!). Host Scott is joined by special guest Nathaniel Metcalfe (The JCAS Presents: Nick and Nat Control The Airwaves and The JCAS Present-Nick & Nat Consume and Obey) to dissect one of the most iconic actioners of 1995, Bad Boys!Over the course of the episode we talk about the divisiveness of Michael Bay, how he feels like he is doing Tony Scott impersonation here and the early shoots of what come to be known as Bayhem. Plus, we get into the insane chemistry of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, 90s actions love of a colour and how we both agree (even if we are in the minority) that Bad Boys II is the worst entry in the franchise. Greg Alba and Aaron Alexander dive into the heartfelt and powerful Daddy's Little Girls, directed by Tyler Perry. This 2007 drama stars Idris Elba (Luther, Beasts of No Nation, Thor) as Monty, a devoted father fighting for custody of his three daughters against their negligent mother Jennifer, played by Tasha Smith (Empire, Why Did I Get Married?). Gabrielle Union (Bring It On, Bad Boys II, Being Mary Jane) shines as Julia, a high-powered attorney who steps in to help Monty, and their chemistry lights up the screen. With unforgettable performances from Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish, Girlfriends), Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman, Iron Eagle), and China Anne McClain (Black Lightning, A.N.T. Farm), this movie tackles themes of family, justice, and love. Greg and Aaron react to the most emotional and powerful scenes, offering their commentary on the courtroom drama, Monty's struggles, and the heartfelt moments with his daughters. They also reflect on their reactions to Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion—a continuing celebration of Perry's body of work. Podcast producers Vic Turnbull and Charles Commins return to Flixwatcher to review Vic's choice Bad Boys II. Bad Boys II (2003) is the second film in the Bad Boys franchise, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Theresa Randle, and Joe Pantoliano all reprise their roles from the previous film, Bad Boys (1995). Detective Lieutenant Michael Eugene 'Mike' Lowrey (Smith) and Detective Lieutenant Marcus Miles Burnett (Lawrence) are back in Miami. This time investigating the ecstasy drug trade. A bust during a Klan meeting leads to Mike accidentally shooting Marcus in the ass. The trail leads them to drug lord Hector Juan Carlos "Johnny" Tapia. In pursuit of him Bayhem ensues with car chases, shoot outs and mortuary raids. Recommendability scores for Bad Boys II were mixed, its mix of violence and comedy makes it a niche audience and some of humour hasn't aged well. With a runtime of 2 hours and 36 mins scores for repeat viewing were low to give an overall rating of 3.01. Bad Boys II, Bad Boys II, whatcha gonna do when they Bad Boys II?We're back with perhaps the ultimate Bayhem experience, the purest expression of what purile pop American cinematic entertainment can offer: BAD BOYS IIA truly repellent and maximalist film, one that has to be seen to be believed. What did Alex and Ben think of it? Before you find out you'll have to listen to our discussion on another great Bad Boy of cinema, Caveh Zahedi. Your hosts went to a two-day screening of his most recent works (in progress) and got to meet the man himself. Are these two threads connected in the episode... not particularly but we think it's funny that it worked out this way.Next week we're diving into the Bad Boys legacy sequels with the confusingly title third entry BAD BOYS FOR LIFE. Here we will first bring up The Slap before a very Slap-heavy finale the week after.Follow us @thefranchisees on Instagram and Twitter and email us at thefranchiseespod@gmail.com

This week, we're heading down to the basement with no regard for our own well-being as an impromptu theme emerges from our weeks-long run of perfect pictures and Masterpiece Month continues with 2007's Zodiac, directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Edwards, Chloë Sevigny, Elias Koteas, John Carroll Lynch, Brian Cox, Philip Baker Hall, Dermot Mulroney, Donal Logue and Charles Fleischer. It's very much a movie about obsession, the irresistable pull of a puzzle, and has a compelling case as Fincher's best movie. Watching it now, it's almost an ill omen for the cultural obsession with true crime content and podcasts in the years since, but this one manages to explore its gruesome crimes in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous or exploitative -- a tough needle to thread. If you'd like to watch Zodiac before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Paramount+. Other works discussed on this episode include Knives Out, Glass Onion, Mank, Citizen Kane, The Killer, Spy, The Heat, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Identity Thief, A Simple Favor, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Accountant, Twilight, Saint Maud, Ren Faire, The Idea of You, Kissing Jessica Stein, Friends With Kids, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Everybody Wants Some!!, Dazed and Confused, Nope, Evil, The X-Files, the music of Maggie Rogers, Summer of Sam, Fight Club, Se7en, Alien3, The Social Network, Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Spotlight, Prisoners, Hustle, Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Oppenheimer, Succession, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Devs, Twister, Mr. Show, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Boston Strangler, Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, I'll Be Gone In The Dark, and Accepted, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up Masterpiece Month with the Wachowskis' magnum opus on what it means to create art under capitalism as we step behind the wheel with Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox in 2007's Speed Racer -- a movie that is sadly not available for streaming in Canada currently. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week, it's the start of a beautiful friendship, as of all the gin joints in all the world, this movie had to walk into ours... Yes, Hayley is finally pulling one of the all-time greats down off the shelf as we watch 1942's Casablanca, directed by Richard Curtiz, and starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Dooley Wilson. Widely regarded as one of the most beloved films of all time, it will come as absolutely no surprise that we both adored it. A tragic romance set against a surprisingly timely morality play making big swinging statements on the Nazis and fascism as the war was still happening. It's great! If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, and in the case of a movie like this we do recommend you do, Casablanca is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz at the time of publication. The full Roger Ebert 50th anniversary essay: https://www.rogerebert.com/roger-ebert/as-time-goes-by-its-the-still-the-same-old-glorious-casablanca Other works referenced in this episode include The Fall Guy, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Hot Fuzz, Suze, Am I OK?, How To Be Single, Light Sleeper, The First Omen, Immaculate, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Hot Rod, BlackBerry, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, The Hunt For Red October, Notorious, Amsterdam, Mad Men, The Simpsons and countless more. We're back next Friday to continue our run of five-star classics, with David Fincher's magnum opus: 2007's Zodiac, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., which is currently streaming on Paramount+ in Canada and presumably in the US as well. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week on the Everything Actioncast, shit gets real as Zach and Chris talk about the 2003 Michael Bay extravaganza Bad Boys II as the fourth movie in the franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die hits theaters.Seven years after the first movie, Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are a part of the Tactical Narcotics Team in Miami, trying to track down and stop the kingpin shipping in massive amounts of ecstasy into the city. Unknown initially to the Bad Boys, Marcus' sister Syd (Gabrielle Union) is working for the DEA undercover and getting close to Johnny Tapia (Jordi Molla), the Cuban druglord behind everything. Zach and Chris talk about how everything is ramped up to 11 in this sequel, the over-the-top action, Michael Bay's obsession with corpses, if you can drive up to Guantanamo Bay in a Hummer, the hit-or-miss comedic set pieces, and more. You can stream Bad Boys II on Hulu, Pluto TV, and Starz.Next week, we're diving into Chronicles of Riddick to celebrate both Karl Urban's return as Billy Butcher in The Boys Season 4 and the movie's 20th anniversary. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost followed up Shuan of the Dead with the second installment of their now so-called Three Flavours Cornetto Triology - or, alternatively, the “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy - trading zombie movie rom-com parody for buddy cop movies (Point Break or Bad Boys II?) and rural paranoia thrillers like The Wicker Man. When top London cop Nicholas Angel is transferred to a quaint countryside village and is saddled with inept partner, he begins to suspect that the town may be hiding a dark secret. Featuring Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Paddy Considine, Olivia Colman, and a whole village's worth of stalwart British stars, the film was an instant hit and proved to be the highest-grossing “flavour” of the three. Now we're taking a trip to Sandford, Gloucestershire, to get brainfreeze with Hot Fuzz! Fast and Furious action unit director Spiro Razatos shares rags to riches story and how seeing the movie Shaft at age 11 inspired him on his path to becoming a Hollywood Stuntman. Apple Podcasts users full show notes here: https://languageofcreativity.podbean.com/e/spiro-razatos-friendslikefamily-fastandfurious-action Spiro Razatos began his career as a stunt man and quickly worked his way into the Directors Guild of America just by asking. Somehow, on the spot producers gave him his very first sequence directing a car chase! Since then Razatos has 2nd Unit Directed major films such as Venom, Bad Boys II and Bad Boys For Life, films in The Fast and The Furious franchise (Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, Fate of the Furious, F9), and Captain America Winter Soldier, to name a few. From Denver, Colorado and the son of Greek immigrants, young Spiro began training himself to be a stuntman after a fateful day when his dad took him on a Greyhound to visit the zoo. His father, who was also blind had saved for six months for the trip, but they never made it to the zoo. Eleven year old Razatos saw the marquee for the movie Shaq and begged his father to take him to see it… that day. “I started crying and said I don't know, I just need to see it now.” He practiced jumping off of roofs (don't try this at home) and crashing his own bicycles until he was finally able to get a Super Eight movie camera. He'd managed to get his home-made stunt reel onto the set of Heart to Heart, when legendary stunt coordinators Mike Vendrell and Greg Barnett finally called him and told him they would help him come to Hollywood. In this episode we talk about the magic of visual storytelling, the importance of shooting practical stunts and how CG (computer generated elements) can totally ruin the believability of a sequence, why Spiro always hires his own editor (the one he's had his whole career) spending hours at the end of every shooting day to present the sequence to the studio. We talk about his work/life balance and yearly trips to the “ashram” to detox. But most importantly Spiro highlights the importance of having a team of people you know and trust with your life. His stunt team, Team Malaka has been with him for over 30 years, oh yeah, and of course we talk about his favorite “team building activity” playing Call of Duty 2. On today's episode, I talk to writer Jerry Stahl. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jerry won a Pushcart Prize early in his writing career before taking a detour into writing erotica and for magazines like Hustler. This led to another detour writing for TV and movies, although "detour" here might be incorrect, considering this has been a large chunk of his professional career. Jerry penned scripts for ALF, Thirtysomething, Moonlighting, Twin Peaks, CSI, Maron, Escape at Dannemora as well as films like Bad Boys II. As an author, Jerry has written a number of incredible books and memoirs including Perv: A Love Story, I, Fatty, Permanent Midnight and his latest Nein, Nein, Nein!: One Man's Tale of Depression, Psychic Torment, and a Bus Tour of the Holocaust. Welcome to something completely new, the only commentary podcast that matters because, as far as I know, it's the only one that exists. On our inaugural episode, we're tackling the commentary for Michael Bay's "Armageddon" featuring Bay, stars Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, but mainly we're focusing on the Master of Bayhem.Did NASA need a cinematic facelift? Are asteroids really our number one planetary concern? Was the Criterion Collection asleep at the wheel when they chose to include this film? Did Ben Affleck use his air time to craft an unsuccessful RiffTrax audition? We'll attempt to answer all these questions, but don't hold it against us if we fail. Ryan's Recommendations: "The Rock" (1996), "Bad Boys II" (2003), and "Ambulance" (2022)For exclusive bonus content and early releases of every episode, join our Patreon and become an Official Minder: http://www.patreon.com/onetrackmindpodcastTheme Music by: Bildschirm (bildschirm.bandcamp.com). SUBSCRIBE NOW for early access and exclusive bonus episodes at WWW.PATREON.COM/ROTTENREWIND The year is 1991. Tony Scott is still riding the momentum of his generation-defining phenomenon “Top Gun.” Writer Shane Black is the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood before the age of 30. Bruce Willis' seemingly untouchable star power has been dealt a blow by the recent disaster known as “Hudson Hawk.” Producer Joel Silver is quickly developing a reputation as the most hands-on, hard-nosed producer in Hollywood, coming for Don Simpson's title of belligerent coked-out super producer. So what happens when these 4 massive egos get together and make a $40 million action movie? You get one of the most vile, racially charged, toxic action comedies to ever get the greenlight from a major studio. Is there a “Bad Boys II” without “The Last Boy Scout”? Probably not. Podcast regular and the only cinematographer who has read the 9/11 Commission Report front to back, Jake Ures, joins us again to unpack two of the defining buddy cop action comedies of the 90s. After the aforementioned "Last Boy Scout," we'll be diving into the barely rotten third installment in the "Die Hard" franchise, "Die Hard with a Vengeance" to discuss Bruce Willis' effortless ability to make us root for his toxic antiheroes. Is there any modern actor who can play washed-up action heroes the way Willis did in his prime? Is Jeremy Irons necklace hot? Did "Last Action Hero" need to be as brutally violent as it was and why is the answer a resounding "Fuck yes"? Are we still yearning for a time when the scariest thing Hollywood could imagine was a post-Soviet terrorist blowing up half of New York City to steal some gold? Is Bruce Willis the only man who can still make us laugh at a "Yo Mama" joke? There's only one place to find out.
