POPULARITY
This week, Brett had the privilege of sharing some time with Tampa and Florida legend – Governor Bob Martinez. He was Tampa's 54th mayor and Florida's 40th governor; both positions held as the first of Spanish descent. He also has deep roots in Tampa, his grandparents having immigrated from Spain at the turn of the 20th Century during a great boom in the cigar industry there. His father worked in the restaurant business, including as a long-time employee at the famed Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City, and then later at the family-owned Café Sevilla in West Tampa. Martinez was a star athlete at Jefferson High School, a graduate of the University of Tampa, and got his professional start as a classroom teacher before becoming the Executive Director of the Hillsborough County Classroom Teachers Association. He was called upon by Governor Ruben Askew to serve on the Governing Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and chair three Basin Boards there: The Hillsborough River, Northwest Hillsborough, and Alafia River. They discuss his childhood in Old Tampa where he enjoyed school, excelled at sports, and spent his free moments fishing with his father and his friends; how Café Sevilla became the birthplace of a mayor's race and the campaign to be Governor of Florida; how his service as head of the teachers union gave him his first taste of real politics; his time at Swiftmud gave him a taste for the water and environmental needs of a region; and a mayorship that gave him the opportunity to restore, innovate, and move his home city forward. His term as governor would be marked by enacting some of the most consequential environmental policy in Florida history including the enactment of the Preservation 2000 conservation land acquisition program, the Growth Management Act, and the Surface Water Improvement and Management Act. He also implemented the Florida Lottery, created Florida's Turnpike Authority, and created Space Port Florida. There are a few other achievements in particular that hold a more personal value to Brett including Martinez's restoration of the Lowry Park Zoo from the ground up as mayor; the creation of Florida Prepaid College; the rebirth of Nature's Classroom in Hillsborough County; an amazing nearly 70-year (and counting) partnership with his beloved wife Mary Jane; and of course, his analysis of why the Tampa Cuban sandwich is superior to the one from Miami (it's the bread). He's still as active as ever, serving on many boards and clubs, is a Senior Policy Advisor with the Holland & Knight Law Firm, and at 89 years-old, you can still find him on his daily walks or on the tennis court. We hope you enjoy the conversation! In 1905, Saloon Columbia in Tampa, FL officially became Columbia Restaurant, a place helmed by Casimiro Hernandez Sr. where cigar workers in Ybor City could rest and enjoy Spanish and Cuban food, or snag a sandwich to eat on the job. Through the years, the restaurant grew to envelop the entire city block, and today, the family-owned landmark is Florida's oldest restaurant and the largest Spanish restaurant in the world with 15 dining rooms and 1,700 seats. Andrea Gonzmart Williams is the great-great-granddaughter of Casimiro Hernandez Sr., and she began working at Columbia at the age of 10 by doing filing in the corporate office. She continued working in various positions through high school and then after graduating from the University of South Florida, joined the family business full-time as the fifth generation of the 1905 Family of Restaurants. She is actively involved in the day-to-day operations of not only the flagship Ybor City location but also the other Columbia Restaurant locations in Florida, the Columbia Cafes at Tampa Bay History Center and Tampa International Airport, and other restaurant concepts within the company. But the Columbia isn't just a family tradition for those who work there and grow up in the business; it's also a traditional place of celebration for countless Florida families throughout the last 117 years.

Correspondent Jennifer Simonson takes us inside Florida’s oldest restaurant. Simonson visits with Andrea Gonzmart, the great, great granddaughter of Ybor City’s iconic Columbia Restaurant 's founder . The family patriarch was a Cuban immigrant who opened the restaurant in 1903 to feed the cigar rollers on their way to and from work. Come along with Simonson to discover the history behind some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, how what started out as a small corner cafe in 1903 turned into a restaurant with 15 dining-rooms that takes up an entire city block. Gonzmart also shares her thoughts about the future in the restaurant world, along with her description of the essential ingredients in the iconic “Cuban” sandwich.

But not just any soup. It is a vegetarian version of a soup we are so fond of at The Columbia Restaurant. The Spanish Bean Soup is one we had on the first episode of our show. Theirs is delightful with Chorizo, Onion, Chickpeas, and warm spices. We used our instant pot to create this version. It makes approximately 8 servings. Here is our recipe: Ingredients: White Potatoes Diced - 6 potatoes Water - 8 Cups Dry Garbanzo Beans - 1-lb Package White Onion Diced - 1 whole onion Diced Carrots - 4 whole Diced Celery - 4 stalks Diced Jalapeño - 1 Whole Minced Garlic - 6 Cloves Smoked Paprika - 2 Tablespoons Liquid Aminos - 4 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Kale - Half of a 16-ounce bag Directions: Combine all ingredients except kale in the instant pot. Set the instant pot on high and cook for one hour. Release valve and depressurize instant pot. Add kale. Turn back on low for 20 minutes. Then divide equally among 8 bowls and enjoy. Or divide among containers to store for the week for lunch or dinner. DRINK Monday, February 22nd, was National Margarita Day. So, we share our own Pineapple Jalapeños Margarita recipe to honor this day! Ingredients (Serves 2) Silver Tequila - 2 ounces Cointreau - 1 ounce Pineapple Juice - 2 ounces Lime Juice - 1 ounce Sliced Fresh Jalapeños - 4 (2 are for muddling and 2 are for garnish) Sliced Lime Wedges - 2 for garnish Jalapeño Simple Syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 1 additional jalapeño halved from those listed above) Directions Make Jalapeño Simple Syrup prior to mixing drink by bringing 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil on high heat. Remove from heat and add jalapeño. Allow to steep in mixture for a few minutes before preparing remainder of ingredients. Combine all the rest of the ingredients in a shaker with ice and 1 ounce of the Jalapeño Simple Syrup. Shake for a few seconds and strain into two different glasses over ice. Serve with lime wedge. It will be tough, but we know it will be worth it! On a happier note, it is Christmas week! So we thought we’d talk about all the gifts running has brought into our lives, especially in 2020, that we are grateful for and will celebrate this holiday season. Don’t forget the holiday virtual race we will be running on Christmas Day! Run for A Claus, supporting the Salvation Army, is now closed, but If you had the chance to join our team, make sure you post pics and tag them with #runforaclaus, @runforaclaus, #runcationnation, and @ocmarathon so we can share in a holiday celebration and virtual run together! In addition, you all came through with some fantastic meal favorites so we share traditions from you as well! Thanks, Runcation Nation! We will be thinking of you as we eat one of our favorite new traditions from the last few years, Christmas Eve dinner from The Columbia Restaurant in Tampa! DRINK Eight-Foot Brewing here in Cape Coral had some tasty new releases this past weekend. So we decided to head to their Saturday event and try two of them. Apple Cinnamon Doughnut made with apple, cinnamon, and marshmallow comes in at 11.4% ABV! Plus it is served with a Fort Myers favorite Divine Doughnut! Breakfast Stout was made with Maple Syrup and local Urban Buzz Coffee. At 10%, this tasty stout was served with a quarter of a waffle and maple smoke! We are so happy to have such creative minds in our local breweries. Congratulations, Eight-Foot Brewing on two great releases! We can’t wait to try more. RUN We are recapping this year’s experience at the Elite Events Turkey Trot that we ran live on Thanksgiving last Thursday! The medal was bigger, but the experience reminded us of last year while the folks from Elite Events made sure everyone was comfortable and had plenty of space to socially distance. The post-race treats were great and the opportunity for photos was so nice. Elite Events has race results posted online and finisher videos, too! We also completed a virtual race - Richard’s Run for Life. It is a 5K to raise funds for the Moffitt Cancer Center. Aimee and Dana did their races in different ways and we recap that this week. The end result was the same: supporting a great organization and getting a $25 gift card to use at Ulele or the Columbia Restaurant. Yum! EAT The Columbia Restaurant Group opened its newest restaurant two weeks ago in Tampa, Casa Santo Stefano! We got to see their beautiful new space just down the street from their Columbia Restaurant location in Ybor City. This one took over an old pasta factory and pays homage to Sicilian classics on their menu. We started with Arancini, sampled an amazing salad in Valenti’s Burrata, had a classic in Spaghetti Con Pulpette (Spaghetti with Meatballs), and a unique dish in Spaghetti Al Nero Con Polpo (Squid Ink Spaghetti with Octopus). Delightful and delicious, the meal was a wonderful way to celebrate Aimee’s birthday! DRINK Casa Santo Stefano also has great cocktail selections. We wanted to try wine from their beautiful upstairs wine cellar. It was so hard to choose. Our server, Val, steered us in the right direction. We will be back for wine but focused on cocktails. The Casa Negroni made with Sicilian gin, highlighted the floral notes of the gin. The 1925 Manhattan, named for the year the building opened, was just the right amount of sweetness and smoke. Just some wonderful notes on their amazing customer service: Val checked in with us at the perfect time during each course of the meal and he was ready to make the recommendations we needed for a perfect meal. The entire staff signed a card for us and presented us with a great lemon pound cake dessert to help celebrate the occasion. We felt like family. Matteo, a manager at the restaurant, gave us a tour of the building after our meal. We saw the kitchens and dessert stations where the magic happens. We even got a sneak peek of the upstairs space that has yet to open where there will be small plates and beverages of a different variety than the restaurant downstairs. Congratulations to the Columbia Restaurant Group on the newest addition to their family of amazing restaurants. We can’t wait to return! THAT’S A WRAP! I'll introduce you to award-winning public speaker, Alexa Rose Carlin, who originates out of Fort Lauderdale. She's overcome a LOT and has now built a legacy of empowering women through conferences, one of which I had the pleasure of being part of this past weekend. Then, my guest storyteller, Andrea Gonzmart Williams, represents the 5th generation of ownership of Florida's oldest restaurant--the Columbia. And, she is going to share the story of Casimiro Hernandez, Sr.--the 1st generation and founder of the Columbia--and his legacy. And, at the end, you'll get to hear a story from my life that relates to something else you've heard in the show. Now, this episode ends up being the perfect time for me to share the story that is probably the one I get asked to tell the most; however, it's also still the one that I don't think enough people know--the story of my lung. Let's talk about some real Florida food! We'll learn to make the Columbia Restaurant's signature 1905 Salad, which was actually invented in the 1940s. Then, fast-forward to 1961, when the Junior League of Tampa debuted its Gasparilla Cookbook, which included its prize-winning Florida Orange Grove Pie. And, we've got a conversation with celebrity chef Lazarus Lynch, who's spreading the word about his Southern cuisine using a modern-day kitchen staple: social media. Support for The Zest Podcast comes from Seitenbacher Brand Natural Foods, like Muesli cereals, oils, oatmeal, energy bars, gluten-free fruit gummies for the kids, organic coffee and more. What's the future of food? One prominent food writer says we're heading to a time when we start seeing robots in the farm field and in the kitchen. A longtime wheat farmer says our future is our past...in the form of ancient grain. Also coming up on today's show, for a Florida Fourth of July, our all-American food isn't apple pie -- it's the Cuban sandwich! We'll find out how it's done at The Columbia Restaurant.

RUN We did the Ice Cream 5K at Al Lopez Park plus mileage to get to 10 total for this week’s long run. It was the same place that our cameraman went to do the Tampa Beer Run last week and the site of our first episode. But we went back because I could not go last week and because that park is incredible in terms of its course and shade to get some high mileage in that we were assigned this week. We got 5 in before the race started and then we were off on the 5K to get an unexpected medal and free ice cream! We saw a lot of families that participated in the 5K and kids races. There were two ice cream trucks for us to choose from when we got our free cup of ice cream, and the cherry ice cream from Sunny’s Nitro Ice Cream was awesome after our first 8 miles in the park. Then we finished our last two miles and we were off to refuel! WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU, TOO! In the coming weeks, we will be talking about virtual races and what we think of them. So, email us at info@runeatdrink.net or call and leave us a message at 941- 677-2733. Let us know what your thoughts are about virtual races you’ve done or just the concept of virtual races in general. Send us a voice recording, write us an email, or call and leave us a message and we’ll share your feedback in our next episode. EAT The night before the 5k, we went to one of our favorites, the Columbia Restaurant. Their 1905 salad, Cuban sandwich, and Spanish Bean Soup as well as the Crab Croquettes are all incredible items from their menu that we reviewed on our first episode and quick bites. (Can you tell we are celebrating the 2nd anniversary of our podcast over several weeks, even though it doesn’t officially happen until June 17th). Our official feature for this episode is Big Ray’s Fish Camp. It is famous online for the grouper sandwich. Everyone says it is the best one around. We want to go back to have that, but we were craving Fish Dip and our cameraman’s sister said that we had to have the shrimp corn dog. Plus, a favorite of his mom’s was Grouper cheeks, and they have a buffalo version we had to order. We had local beer in cans and bottles. Their prices are reasonable for the delicious seafood they offer. They have some indoor seating, but most of their seating area is a big porch on the side of the restaurant. It has to be so nice lit up at night. We will return! DRINK 81Bay Brewing is in a huge warehouse-like space that had a great bar, a huge projector with video games setup on the side, as well as a Farmer’s Market going on when we arrived. They also have an event room and awesome artwork all over the brewery from local artists selling it. Their sinks outside their bathrooms have kegs setup as their sinks for washing your hands! Their brewery is visible from the bar, and at the bar there are friendly bartenders who helped us setup our flights. Across from the bar is an entire wall that looks like an under-the-sea scene projected onto it behind the stage where they have live music on some nights. I had these unique flavors while we were there but they had lots of tasty brews on tap: Here Plums the Sun 5% Market Spiked Punch 5.6% Coffee Porter featuring Lucky Goat Coffee 6% Guzumba Sweet Stout 8.5% Dana had these: Thomas Hefferson Hefeweizen 6.1% Tangled Up in Brew Lychee and White Peach Blonde Ale 5% Real Slo Irish Red 5.5% Randy Marshmallow Peanut Butter Marshmallow Stout 8.5% We would come back. Plus a dollar of every pint purchased goes to help a local organization called W.H.A.Y.S. (We Honor and Appreciate Your Service). It supports and employs veterans. Welcome to the big episode from Tampa featuring the Gasparilla Distance Classic Weekend, more fast and fresh food from Asian Kitchen, and a great cocktail from Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar! RUN During Gasparilla Distance Classic Weekend in Tampa, Florida, we ran the half marathon. If you are up for a challenge, you can do all the races, which consist of 5K and 15K on Saturday and the Half Marathon as well as the 8K on Sunday. The half marathon is a flat course with plenty of aid stations. The first 5 miles are on Davis Island. The last 8.1 miles of the race are on Bayshore Boulevard. So there is only one overpass to get in and out of the island and the rest of the course is flat! There are a few spectators cheering you through Davis Island but the bulk of on-course entertainment is on Bayshore. The bulk of the spectators cheer you on at the finish line and they are so great! The medals we earned - both the pirate-themed medal for the Gasparilla Half Marathon and the gigantic Treasured Chest Challenge medal for running this one and the 2019 Donna Half Marathon in Jacksonville earlier this month. The one thing I like to caution anyone about when I recommend this race is this: you never know what the weather will be like and it is usually extremely humid, so hydrate and keep up with any nutrition that you have been successful with in the past during long runs. Last year, we did not hydrate enough and got really sick after the race so we could not attend the after party (so sad because the Columbia Restaurant was there with great food!). So this year, while it was overcast, it was still very humid, so hydration in South Florida races is key. I recommend this race to anyone. It has a generous time limit, I’ve never seen someone picked up for going too slow (just encouraged to finish on the sidewalk) and is a fun and flat run. EAT We have shown you several great dishes this week from Asian Kitchen. Owner, Lisa Larkin, and her staff are killing it in this fast and fresh arena, and they’ve only been open two months! This time we feature one of my favorites and a great “carbo loading” kind of meal, Pad Thai. But in this case, remember that you can choose your protein! So we tried it with the brisket that they smoke right here with their own spice rub, too! It was so tender. The barbecue went perfectly with the peanut flavors that are traditional in the dish and the noodles were cooked perfectly and just soaked up both to provide the perfect bite. Textures were out of this world as well. The soft scrambled egg, freshness of cilantro, the crunch of both peanuts and bean sprouts, as well as the almost opaque noodles meant so much goodness and variety in every bite! DRINK We indulged in a refreshing original cocktail at Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar. We want to come back and try their tapas and pizza for sure. What a way to celebrate the completion of your race! It was their watermelon margarita called La Zia. It includes tequila, lime, muddled jalapeños with the seeds and watermelon purée made fresh. Krystal, bartender at Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar took us through a demo and let us try it. It was refreshing, slightly sweet, the acid from the lime was great, and the spice from the jalapeños is not overwhelming! We can’t wait to come back to Tampa and have a meal at Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar as well as indulge in some cocktails named after specific areas from around Tampa Bay! Hope to see you there! Like what you see? Tune in to the podcast on our website or subscribe on iTunes so you don’t miss a minute. Come accomplish, explore, and indulge with us! July 27, 2017 We are back at Patio Tapas and Beer! We tasted the sangria, and now we dive into their delicious tapas. In a 2-min video, we talk about the Pork Belly and Piquillo Relleno. These two are the perfect balance of flavors and they are just two more reasons you should visit Patio Tapas and Beer if you are in Boca Raton, Florida. I know it is Spanish Tapas, and we did visit the Columbia Restaurant at our last race, but this was not to be missed, and I love tapas when I can't decided what I am in the mood to eat. There are so many different Spanish influences as far as food in Florida, they are all worth sampling and enjoying! This did not disappoint. Try it next time you are in town and you'll see what I mean. Pork Belly - $3 on their happy hour menu! It is a piece of crispy pork belly on a toasted baguette with picked shallots and aioli. Piquillo Relleno - $3 on their happy hour menu as well! A stuffed pepper (I say it is a red pepper in the video, but it is a piquillo pepper) with goat cheese and a PX reduction (which tasted like a balsamic reduction).
After any race, it is time to celebrate and refuel. At the Columbia Cafe, a part of the Columbia Restaurant family which has been a Tampa staple since 1905, we sample the Devil Crab Croquette. It is a delicious combination of Cuban breadcrumbs, spices, and crab, deep fried together for the perfect bite. It was so delicious, it took 2 minutes to review it. There is so much more we tasted during our outstanding meal from this historic landmark in Tampa. For more from our Tampa Beer Run and visit to the Columbia, check out the full episode. Links from this Quick Bite: Columbia Cafe
In this quick bite, we take 90-second break from running to sample our final beer at the Tampa Beer Run, all of this benefitting a great organization called My Hope Chest. Coppertail Brewing Company's Unholy Trippel and has an ABV of 9.5%, although its light color could fool you. It would pair very well with the deviled crab croquette we had at the Columbia Restaurant (featured in our next quick bite). It has notes of apricot and a bitter finish. Great to sip in the humidity of the Florida summer. For more from our Tampa Beer Run, check out the full episode. Hey, Everyone! Welcome to our first episode, where we head to Tampa, Florida for the Tampa Beer Run. Yes, we get to sample beer on the course, but more importantly, this run raises funds for My Hope Chest, which helps women pay for reconstructive surgery after their courageous battles with breast cancer. After the run, we need to refuel, and what better way than to sample Tampa on a plate at the Columbia Restaurant. Our final stop on this trip is Cigar City Brewing, where you can spot the rolling of cigars and a long line of tasty beer on tap, and ours is just a sampling of their libations. For more information, check out the show notes below. MY HOPE CHEST Connect with My Hope Chest at their website and learn about their upcoming 5K Glow Run coming up in April 2018, also in the Tampa area. AL LOPEZ PARK This is a beautiful park that is flat and an easy run. There was no time limit or specific pace per mile you needed to adhere to, so this race is great for beginners or run/walkers. TAMPA BEER RUN ON FACEBOOK We paid a reasonable entry fee of $45 dollars and added a VIP ticket for $12 more to get a couple of extra beers at the after party as well as souvenir Tampa Beer Run glasses and a white cotton t-shirt. COLUMBIA RESTAURANT This Tampa staple has been around since 1905, and we happened to sample these: Crab Croquette Spanish Bean Soup 1905 Salad Cuban Sandwich CIGAR CITY BREWING At this brewery, there are some amazing beers and here is a list of a few we recommend: Pollona! With Chocolate! Milk Stout with Chocolate Caramel Coffee Kölsch 110K+OT Batch #9 Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Imperial Brown Ale Wasabi Ginger Saison We've crossed the finish line! Thank you for watching!! Join us next time as we run another destination race, sample tasty beverages, and refuel with delicious food. We hope this helps you preview some awesome vacation or "runcation" destinations. If you have any that we should feature, please let us know on Instagram, Twitter, or our website, www.runeatdrink.net.
We talk to Miles Zuniga and Tony Scalzo from Fastball about Austin, TX in the 90s, their platinum selling album All the Pain Money Can Buy, Top 5 hit “The Way”, their new album Step Into Light, and their Nigel Dick-directed music video for “I Will Never Let You Down.” We also talk about Machine Gun Kelly’s “Bad Things”, Pen Pineapple Apple Pen, playing Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, the Columbia Restaurant, and the “Fun-Lucrative Scale.” --- More Podcasts: Episode Archive Subscribe to Cigar City Radio: iTunes | Android | Stitcher | RSS Connect with us: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Spotify
