It's not every day that we get to feature an NAACP Image Award nominee! Our talented guest is none other than artist and animator Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant of Treal Toonz. His show, "Peanut Headz: Black History Toonz," was recently nominated for Outstanding Animated Series at this year's NAACP Image Awards. And, for the first time ever, Gerard has a very special co-host: Producer Jaime, a.k.a. the founder of Flint Stone Media and the Florida Podcast Network (and Gerard's little sister)! JaFleu and Jaime go WAY back, so it only makes sense to get these two on the mic to discuss JaFleu's nomination, their shared Haitian upbringings, and his artwork's influence on Black history education. Today, I'll introduce you to Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant--a cartoonist from West Palm Beach. He's a son of Haitian immigrants who has chartered a path to success through his paint, pen, and pencils as the artist and founder of Treal Toonz. Then, our storyteller is Denyse Cunningham, Curator from Ft. Lauderdale's Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. She'll be telling us about how the family behind one of Florida's most iconic historic estates--the Birches and the Bartletts--helped preserve a bit of Florida's natural history. And, at the end, I'll share another personal story pulled from my life. But, in what I can only imagine will be a rarity, the story I'm sharing actually ties in BOTH of today's guests. It was a Christmas miracle I experienced last year, and it's the perfect way to kick off a holiday season full of giving thanks. I had a chance to catch up with long-time friend of the podcast--artist and photographer, Jamaal "Visualist" Clark. We chat about his painting, his photography, and expanding his horizons and his vision for the future! Now, I didn't have a chance to record a Learning Curve segment for this episode. Things have been CRAZY these last couple of weeks with technical issues post-Hurricane Irma and with preparing for my International Podcast Day broadcast. But, I promise to get The Learning Curve back on track for the next episode!! Also, I'll be starting up a new segment in a future episode where I share something cool that a former guest or one of you guys is doing in pursuing your dream. And, I'm open to suggestions for naming that segment. Drop me a line on the Dreamers Become Doers Facebook page to make your suggestion! Enjoy!! One of my favorite people (and my birthday buddy), Jason "Jafleu" Fleurant, visits the podcast FOR THE THIRD TIME!! He's our first three-peat, and this is our most exciting conversation to DATE! He shares fun stories of his milestones, opens up about the struggles, lays down insightful knowledge, and comes through with all the feels. He is a remarkable talent who is a rising star!! Included in this episode is a VERY special announcement of my own--one that is a culmination of 6 months of solid hard work on my part and mentorship on the part of Glenn the Geek from the Horse Radio Network. It's HUGE. This episode is being released ahead of schedule, as Hurricane Irma is most likely going to knock out my power and internet for a while. Eek! So, to all my listeners in Florida, download it NOW, so you can use it as a distraction while you are hunkering down. Be safe. Take Irma seriously, and I will talk to you all on the other side! Founder of Poetry In Motion Productions: (PIMP!), Jessica, now known as “Empress Prestige,” knows a thing or two about doing her own thing. She began what started as an unformed idea mass four years ago and worked it into what is now a thriving, repeat project of her own unique concept: ChoreoPoems. These are forms of dramatic expression that combine poetry, dance, music and song. She conceptualizes the overall story arc, directs the talent, and produces the overall program; but, what makes her plays so unique is that she leaves creative license for each role and its expression to the individual player. Essentially, the cast writes much of the content and she threads it together into a cohesive, intelligent expression of her story. Their next project is the 4th installment of Pleasant City Thee ChoreoPoem to be shown soon at The Palm Beach Improv and The Mozart Theatre. Also, Empress is working to bring this piece into the forum of a film called Thee Movie. So exciting!! Her storytelling has community and cultural purpose for the enjoyment and education of every generation. Her diligence, humor, and passion are a true inspiration! I met Jamaal “Visualist” Clark at an art event put on by Exhibit Treal a couple of weeks ago where he was photographing the evening. And, it turns out that he was also a painter who had lent a couple of pieces to the event—pieces that I LOVED. So, I was excited to have Jamaal on the podcast. We sat down and talked about a whole range of topics—from comic books to graffiti, film to digital, his time in school to being a teacher now himself. And, Jamaal was delightful throughout it all. He shared with me what the name “Visualist” means, the theme behind his heart, and what mark he wants to leave in the art world. There are a lot of great nuggets in this podcast for any aspiring artist or person visualizing their own dream!! Treal= true + real Utilizing the concept of “treal,” community leaders, Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant and Tracy Guiteau, are blazing a trail in our backyard to promote young, local talent—Exhibit Treal. They are both fine artists, and, as you’ll hear, Tracy also has a background in fashion design. But, they are also community leaders doing so much to share all they have learned in the bumps in the journey of an artist's life, be strong examples of fortitude, and really inspire and support the community's youth. Their Exhibit Treal events bring local artists together in a safe space free of the b.s. and typical pitfalls that can swallow up their talent, and instead give them a place to breathe and thrive. In this podcast, Jason, Tracy, and I talk about all their events, why their mission means so much to them, and a little of what it's like growing up Haitian. It's a super fun, funny, and inspiring podcast! And my little session at the end features Snoop Dog’s “Gin and Juice” as arranged by The Gourds. Don’t blame me for all the gritty language, blame Snoop Dog!! So, sit back and relax and get ready to get treal! Enjoy!! A child of Haitian immigrants doesn’t often believe that a sustainable living as an artist is even conceivable. But, Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant is a prime example of a person breathing a dream to life one creative step at a time. And, it’s not all about courange for Jason (“JaFleu” as he is known in artistic circles). No, it is simply his undeniable NEED to paint—to create—to express. And his joy comes from living his emotions out loud on canvas for all the world to see and be moved by. A community man, he finds ways to not only trail blaze for the people around him, but to inspire children to break to the expectations of their own lives. He opens up their eyes and minds to possibilities, and opens their hearts to their dreams. JaFleu is an inspiration to his neighborhood, the Haitian community, and humanity as a whole!
