I met Michelle Y. Talbert via LinkedIn years ago, when I was first building my network. I was intrigued by her podcast Her Power Hustle, and was immediately inspired by her honesty and integrity in the work she did. We reconnected in late 2020 and when I asked her to be a guest on my podcast, I was honored when she accepted the invitation. Michelle has career stories that surprise and inspire, her passion and motivation to create a professional network full of encouraging business and people-builders is infectious, and her resilience and focus on her sense of responsibility to her community is extraordinary. Connect with Michelle on LinkedIn, and be sure to follow her on Twitter and Instagram. --- About Sarah: In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. http://www.alainguillot.com/michelle-talbert/ In this episode, we discuss personal finance and social issues as it relates to black America. Balck Americans are systemically discriminated upon. They have fewer employment opportunities, and when they get employed, they earn less than their white counterparts. And black women get paid proportionally less than white women. They are also charged higher interest for mortgages or other loans. They get arrested more often, many cases without cause as we can see in the Starbucks case. and when they get sentenced, they get harsher penalties. In short, personal finance is a lot more difficult for a black person than for a white person in North America. Obviously, Michelle and I didn't find the solution for these socioeconomic problems, but we are doing our part by bringing the conversation forward. This is a topic that has to brought up over and over again until equality and justice is predominant. Michelle is a life and business coach who provides platforms for women in business to connect with themselves, with one another and the resources for their success. When a white person speaks about economic difficulties, they speak about their individual experience; when a black person speaks about economic difficulties, they speak about the collective experience of blacks in America. Blacks suffer from discrimination when are searching for financial services: Why Blacks and Hispanics Have Such Expensive Mortgages. High-cost lenders are targeting these communities, preventing them from building wealth to pass on to their children. White men are paid more than black men, even when the men share similar educational backgrounds. Women are paid less than men and black women are paid less than white women for the same job. During the 1921 Tulsa race riot, white people destroyed a neighborhood of black people because they were doing too well economically. Every day there are countless examples of racial discrimination in North America. In this video, Two black men get arrested for being black at a Starbucks coffee shop. The manager called the police 120 seconds after the two men arrived. Many white people set up business meetings in coffee shops. This same privilege is out of reach for some black people. These two black people were saved because someone filmed the incident. If the incident was not filmed, these two back men could have gone to court, got charged and got branded with a criminal record, which would have made it more difficult for them to get a job. Therefore making personal finance for blacks way more difficult.

"Steve Jobs taught people to pay for content online [through the Apple Store.]" "I tried a few different businesses before launching Foundr Magazine for Young Entrepreneurs. I even tried to sell cologne reviews online!!" Nathan Chan knew he wanted to feel more fulfilled in his life. He wasn't happy with his job and wanted more. He read loads of books and articles about being an entrepreneur but didn't implement most of what he learned. He searched for a guide to help him start but couldn't find what he needed, so he created it. Foundr Magazine was created to help young entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses. Just over a year ago Nathan quit his full-time job and now focuses full-time on creating products to help entrepreneurs. He is well versed in many areas, but we've chosen to go deep on how to build a successful online subscription-based publication AND how to increase your Instagram following with engaged followers, who become not only rabid fans, but paying customers. Sister Power Hustler, Eryka, Publisher of the online beauty, fashion and art publication for today's women of color, Fabulize Mag, submitted some great targeted questions that Nathan answers with a level of detail that will help anyone create a thriving online magazine--and business. Nathan and I chat about: What it took for a risk-averse person like himself to leave his 'day job' and focus completely on what was then his side hustle How to start a digital publication, from choice of platform, to content and marketing, to team building Why he suggests that we give away our best stuff for free Knowing your market and knowing your competitors The power of social proof and leveraging when you're new in business and to enter new markets His proven process for gaining over 10,000 real and engaged Instagram followers IN 2 WEEKS!!!!
