Jesse James LeijaTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know San Antonio's very own Jesse James Leija. Jesse is a 2-time world champion boxer; having won the WBC belt in 1994 and the IBA belt in 1998. In this episode, we chat about growing up in San Antonio, and the series of events that led him to become a fighter. We also dive into a couple of his fights; especially his 4-fight series against Azuma Nelson. The Champ explains the difference between being a 'tough' fighter, and a 'smart' fighter, and then we jump into why his father was his trainer for Jesse's entire career. Along the way, Jesse James shares stories of hanging out with Sylvester Stallone, and even how he managed to sneak his way into a meeting with Muhammad Ali himself! I ask him about some of his other fights with Sugar Shane Mosely, Louie Espinoza, Arturo Gatti, and Oscar De La Hoya; before we trade opinions on the new spectacle of "boxing" involving Jake Paul, and what that is doing to the sport of boxing. Jesse James Leija is an advocate for mental health, started The Miracle League of San Antonio, owns Leija Boxing and Fitness gym, has the longest running charity golf tournament in San Antonio, and even started his own charitable foundation called The Leija Family Foundation. We touch on ALL of these things and more! Jesse James Leija has been a fixture in the city and is a name I have known for as far back as I can remember. It was an honor to speak with such a fantastic steward of my hometown. THIS IS EPISODE #500! THANK YOU, STREETWALKERS!!

In this episode of The Terry Stone Connection, we sit down with British boxing champion Denzel Bentley for a raw and honest conversation about life, choices, and the thin line between two very different futures.Denzel speaks openly about growing up surrounded by influences that could easily have led him down a path into crime, and how boxing became the thing that pulled him away from it. Without the sport, he's clear that his life could have looked very different. He reflects on friends he grew up with who didn't find that same outlet, some now serving prison sentences, others who never made it out at all. The conversation doesn't shy away from the reality of knife and gun violence, and the lasting impact it has had on the people and communities around him.We also talk about his journey in boxing, becoming a three-time British champion and winning the WBO world title, as well as what it's been like being promoted by renowned promoter Frank Warren and operating at the highest level of the sport. This is a no-nonsense discussion about discipline, survival, and how one decision can change the course of a life.Let us know what you think in the comments. Did boxing save Denzel from the wrong path, or was it always in him to rise above it? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Undisputed boxing champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields joins host Neil Haley to discuss her thrilling appearance on NBC's "The Titan Games" hosted by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Shields, who was named one of Sports Illustrated's 50 fittest athletes in 2020, explains her remarkable boxing credentials: three-division world champion, undisputed nine-time world champion, all within just ten fights, plus two Olympic gold medals earned since age 17. She emphasizes that while she's been dominant in boxing since her teenage years, stepping onto "The Titan Games" obstacle course pushed her completely outside her comfort zone and tested her in ways that punching and defense never have.Shields reveals the fascinating dynamic of the show, where professional athletes like herself competed against highly accomplished everyday people—doctors who work out intensely, nurses who are also former Olympians, and other exceptional individuals who may not be household names but possess incredible athletic abilities. She shares humorous behind-the-scenes stories about the professional athletes banding together as a team, creating makeshift training equipment out of wood and water bottles to practice their form before competing. Shields also opens up about her training philosophy, surprising many by revealing she doesn't lift heavy weights and instead focuses on cardio, running six to eight miles regularly, and maintaining balance and hand speed for boxing. She discusses the emotional experience of being challenged by obstacles rather than opponents, and emphasizes one cardinal rule: you don't say no to The Rock. Shields encourages fans to follow her journey on social media at @claressashields and tune in to see how she and fellow professional athletes like Victor Cruz, Tyron Woodley, Joe Thomas, Hannah Teter, and Jesse Graff handle the intense Titan challenges when the show airs May 25th on NBC.
