The idea for 99 comes from the Islamic teaching that there are 99 names for the divine, and each one has its own meaning.   Each week, we meet up for 9-minutes to explore teachings from ALL the world’s religions to help us make sense of our lives.  ************* From this episode: "...even in the midst of despair, with this key, we can awaken to love and ecstasy. What's that about? Love and ecstasy? I gotta admit that those aren't words I use very often... and in the midst of despair? Come on. But what if that really is what it's all about? Being able to expand ourselves - to stretch our own beings enough to be able to hold those two extremes at the same time. Love - even the ecstasy kind of love, right their with despair. An example: “Why did this bad thing happen to me?” or “why is this innocent person suffering so much?” You might hear “oh they didn’t lead a good enough life – or they’re being punished for this or that.” I think that’s just plain wrongheaded. Even more, I think it’s a lazy or cowardly way to hide from the difficult truths that find us – all of us – at one time or another as human beings. Physically, our bodies need nourishment with decent sustenance. Sure, a trip to the donut shop is tasty (and I'm a big fan of donut shops), but we both know that isn't sustenance. If you're like me, using the words sex and love and the divine in the same sentence feels a little off limits. It's one of the 99 names of the divine and it's talking about a quality of G-d that gives us self-esteem. If you're new to this series, you may not know that I never make assumptions about what you believe - or If a belief in a God plays any part in what keeps you going. Whatever you believe, where does your assurance and comfort and self-esteem come from? Are you a compulsive pleaser—needing to be liked at almost any cost? Are you defensive and guarded—just sure that people will hurt you if you let them? Think about where those parts of your personality come from—where they got their start. The idea for 99 comes from the Islamic teaching that there are 99 names for the divine, and each one has its own meaning. ************* This week's message is just for you if you've ever wondered why bad things happen to good people. It's inspired by the Arabic Ya-Adl, meaning something like just mercy, but in a meta sense that also is about balance, and flow, and a sort of cosmic or divine evening out of things that are way beyond our ability to grasp. Here's a quote by Paulo Coelho from his book, By the River Piedra, I Sat Down and Wept: “Joy is sometimes a blessing, but it is often a conquest. Our magic moment helps us to change and sends us off in search of our dreams. Yes, we are going to suffer, we will have difficult times, and we will experience many disappointments — but all of this is transitory it leaves no permanent mark. And one day we will look back with pride and faith at the journey we have taken.” Those words are comforting to me. I'm told that this name shares linguistic roots with beeswax - a substance that gets used as a salve or like a soothing lotion for dried, cracked skin. If your internal critic is anything like mine, dried and cracked is a pretty good way to describe the effect it can have on me, so I love this notion of an antidote. As I face the loss of a job or an unexpected hardship, telling myself that "everything happens for a reason" takes me off the hook a little bit and allows me to relax. After all, I'm a big fan of Taoist and Hindu beliefs that (I think), encourage me to relax and not fight so much against what's happening, but to find a way to work WITH the flow of things. I'm trying not to be too hard on myself - after all, I could barely stand for ten days. As it turns out, the kind of ecstasy and joy and expansiveness that is our theme IS actually there... all the time. What I found was, even though I was feeling miserable, joy wasn't gone.

99: Solstice Greetings from the Sofa

Hello friend. This is Andrew Chirch, host of Prolificate and the podcast series called 99: a Journey. 99 normally comes out each week on Friday, but I’m currently under the weather and not yet able to get an episode out. In the meantime, I want you to know that I’m thinking about you as I record this on the shortest day of the year while laid out flat on the sofa.  While I’m looking forward to the next steps on my journey, I’m also reminded by this illness to find meaning in the current place I’m in. It’s funny how things work, because the upcoming episode is all about things like ecstasy, expansiveness, and transcendent joy. As you might guess, the word “joy” isn’t exactly top of mind right, now….  but… part of me knows that just because I can’t find it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. I promise I’ll get the next episode published as soon as I can. Until then, maybe you can help me with some examples. What are some hard-to-find blessings or bits of joy in your own life? Be well, my friend.

99 #14 - Unity

One of our great struggles as humans is how tribal we are. We were born to be in relationship with each other... we need to belong. That's all well and good until there are so many of us that we can't possibly know everyone. That's where labels come in - and where it goes wrong for many of us.  This week is a call back to what we have in common.  our Unity. Show Notes here - or go to Prolificate.com/99/14

Do you ever get frustrated because.... well... you have so much... you have all the tools you need, on paper, but in spite of your best efforts, it's just NOT WORKING! Today's episode of 99 is about slowing down and letting things happen when they want to happen. Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? Or seen pictures of it? The Grand Canyon is one of the wonders of the world and it's basically rock that's been worn away by water. Rock versus water. Water wins.  Show notes at Prolificate.com/99/13

I recently spoke with Kalissa Scopes of Unlearning Everyday Racism. This was, at times, an emotional interview (for me). Not to spoil this, but toward the end of our conversation, I ask Kalissa what she’s most afraid of. What she answered was profoundly moving. As a trigger warning, we’re talking about love, joy, white supremacy, and our children—topics that you wouldn’t think fit together. But they do. Amazingly so. Show notes here.

Think of how much has changed. In your whole life, just over the last few days, or whatever comes to mind. I've heard so many quotes and pieces of wisdom about change... about how we are always in the process of becoming, and never really "complete" (whatever that means,) and how the secret to success (whatever THAT means) is through continual small changes - improvements. Today's theme isn't Change, though. It's the other. Do you get so wrapped up in tuning in to what things need to change... that you lose touch with the thing that doesn't. You.

Can You Forgive Yourself?

"Never forget that to forgive yourself is to release trapped energy that could be doing good work in the world." How amazing would it be if we could learn to love ourselves just as we are? This week, I received a deck of conversation cards from the Fetzer institute. I excitedly opened the package, pulled out the deck of cards, and drew a card. That quote above was printed on the face of the card, and I knew I had to stop and record an episode based on the imagery that was exploding from the creative corners of my brain.  I hope you enjoy. In the meanwhile, I'll ask you:  What are you carrying that it's time to lay down?

With a background in aerospace engineering and real estate investing, Ali's life path has been pretty impressive when viewed from the outside.  What was more impressive to me is what's going on inside. While it may look like she is slowing down (going from working hard for someone else in the corporate world to working hard for herself as an entrepreneur), Ali has embraced Lifestyle Design. Though she often works from an RV at the beach and travels more, she isn't working less these days. It just looks different.

Maybe it’s the path to God, or to Truth with a capital T. Enlightenment. Universal Love or Peace or Divine Mother. Whatever your destination, the thing about paths is that they involve a journey. To me, a universal truth is that this kind of path always leads to something that transcends little me.
