Cultures are impacted by emotional intelligence and closing the gap between our intentions and our actions. Jason is joined by author and Harvard professor, Margaret Andrews, for an engaging conversation. Jason is joined by Margaret C. Andrews, Harvard University professor and seasoned executive, for a masterclass on the interpersonal dynamics that drive modern organizational success. Please rate and review the podcast to help amplify these messages to others! Summary: In an era where employee engagement has hit a ten-year low, how do elite leaders bridge the gap between corporate vision and the daily human experience? In this episode, Jason V. Barger sits down with Margaret C. Andrews to explore the shift from "soft skills" to "power skills." Margaret, a faculty member at Harvard who has worked with giants like Amazon and the United Nations, shares why emotional intelligence (EQ) and self-awareness are the ultimate competitive advantages in 2026. This conversation moves beyond theoretical management to the heart of "Culture-Making." Jason and Margaret deconstruct the "knowing-doing gap"—the space between understanding leadership principles and actually embodying them under pressure. They explore the critical distinction between being a "culture taker" versus a "culture maker," and how executives can use perspective-taking to resolve the cultural dissonance that often leads to cynicism and turnover. Essential listening for C-Suite executives, academic leaders, and managers at all levels, this episode offers a nuanced look at generational diversity, the "Chief Culture Officer" role of the CEO, and why walking beside your team is more effective than leading from the front. Episode Notes & Timestamps: [00:00] Intro: Jason sets the stage for a conversation on co-creating cultures that bring out the best in people during a time of low trust. [00:03] Meet Margaret Andrews: From master's swim teams to Harvard lecture halls, Margaret introduces her "excitement meter" and the Facets of Strategy. [00:06] The Harvard Perspective: Margaret discusses her courses on Managing Yourself and Leading Others, emphasizing that there is no "single right answer" in leadership—only context. [00:09] The Engagement Crisis: A look at recent data showing 10-year lows in engagement and why only 23% of employees trust their leadership's direction. [00:11] Culture Takers vs. Culture Makers: Margaret defines why most employees are culture takers and how the CEO must act as the "Chief Culture Officer" to move the needle. [00:15] The Satya Nadella Case Study: An analysis of how Microsoft's CEO transformed a legacy culture by being an "insider on the sideline" and changing who got the "seats on the bus." [00:19] Cultural Dissonance: Why "sharp elbows" in leadership destroy collaboration and how promotion criteria serve as the loudest signal of what a company truly values. [00:23] Identifying Your Heroes: The power of stories in transmitting culture. To change your culture, you must change who your organization celebrates as a "hero." [00:27] The "Soft Skills" Crusade: Jason and Margaret discuss why interpersonal skills are actually "superpowers" and why MIT alums consistently wish they had paid more attention to Organizational Behavior. [00:31] The EQ Quadrants: A breakdown of self-awareness, self-management, social competency, and empathy in the high-stakes environment of executive leadership. [00:37] The 6 vs. 9 Perspective: A viral analogy for the workplace—how two leaders can be looking at the same problem, seeing different "numbers," and both be "right" from their vantage point. [00:41] Digital Natives & The "Why": A deep look at Gen Z and Millennials. Why these generations don't need "hovering" leaders, but rather partners to walk beside them. Key Takeaways for Leaders: The Knowing-Doing Gap: Real credit in leadership isn't given for knowing you should listen or be empathetic; it's only given for doing it consistently. Vantage Point Curiosity: Replace judgment with curiosity. When a team member disagrees, ask what "vantage point" they are standing at to see the problem differently. Hero Alignment: Audit the stories told in your halls. Do your "office legends" embody the culture you want to build, or the one you are trying to leave behind? The Space Holder: Feminine Leadership Archetype #4 of 8 "Your presence makes more difference than you likely know." In this episode, we welcome in one of the most undervalued yet over-depended upon powers we have and give to the people and systems we work, live and show up in, the Space Holder — who reminds us that our Presence is our power. It's the steady energy people feel with us, how we listen and respond, and the space we create for what's true to come forward. It's a big part of how we can make a difference in simple yet very significant ways through our presence. Here's a partial transmission of the Space Holder ... notice what resonates... I am an empty vessel, a space without judgment. I listen, I receive, I reflect. I am present because I have no agenda, nothing to prove, nothing to gain or get. I can hear between the spaces to what is really being said and what is really needed. I allow what I hear, feel and see, to stir within me before I speak. This resonance calls people to attention, and shifts things. (get full transmission and practices on my wisdom blog here). Why this matters now We are living in a time when the 3D reality - built on fear, domination, greed, and disconnection - is visibly crumbling, and our nervous systems are overwhelmed by 24/7 information, crisis, and noise. We cannot create what's next from the same hyper-mental, over-productive, reactive patterns that created the imbalance; we need people who can slow the field down, regulate the space, and open access to inner wisdom, higher consciousness, and the human heart. Space holding is one of the most powerful capacities we have and also one of the most invisible and undervalued - especially in roles like parenting, caregiving, teaching, therapy, healing, and true leadership. We don't wait for society or the mainstream culture to value these, we choose to value them ourselves first, and make this invisible power of space holding visible and valued in the family, team, work and organizations ecosystems we swim in Without conscious space holders, valuing this power, we just add more content, more opinions, and more squawking into an already noisy culture. With them, rooms still, hearts open, and paths forward that weren't visible before can finally reveal themselves. We'll explore: What the Space Holder archetype is and why it's so essential in these intense, changing times A guided embodiment and centering practice to feel space holder energy in your own body The Space Holder transmission you can work with as a meditation, mantra, or contemplation How space holding is deeply valuable yet culturally undervalued, and how to start honoring it in yourself Practical ways to listen and hold space, "The Listening Menu" – witnessing, reflecting, offering insight or intuition instead of jumping to fix or over-empathize The power of empty presence and compassion to help you know when to speak, when to be silent, and how to shift a room through your presence alone P.S. ✨ Get access to other episodes in this series here on the Feminine Power Time Wisdom Library. Summary This conversation with two of Canada's foremost police researchers, Dr. Nick Carleton and Dr. Craig Bennell, delves into the complexities surrounding police use of force, moral injuries to officers and their families, and the impact of context-void media narratives on public perception. The topic of the conversation centers around a recent research paper by Dr. Carleton and colleagues titled “A Contextualized Assessment of Duty-Related Bodily Harm Associated with Canadian Police Officers” published in 2025 by FACETS. This discussion highlights the need for better data and understanding of duty-related bodily harm, comparing police errors to those in healthcare. The speakers emphasize the importance of context in evaluating police actions and the challenges faced in changing the narrative around policing in Canada. This is a clarion call to police leadership and those with influence to shape the role of policing in society to stand up and take action.Takeaways• 51% of the public supported defunding the police in 2020.• Police officers often face moral injury due to public perception.• The media plays a significant role in shaping narratives about policing.• Duty-related bodily harm is defined as harm caused by police while on duty.• Comparative analysis shows police errors during use of force events are significantly lower than healthcare errors.• Public understanding of police use of force is often based on misconceptions.• Media coverage often lacks context, shapes incorrect conclusions and leads to negative perceptions of police.• Police officers are often the last line of defense in social crises.• There is a need for a multi-pronged approach to improve public perception of policing.

It’s been exactly one year since Trump was sworn in as US president. And in that time, he has made a lot of “unpresidential” statements, which his supporters love and his detractors loathe. Lou recalls Trump tariffs on Canada that would have potentially devastated the Canadian economy. Amid the threats, former PM Justin Trudeau hotfooted it down to Mar-A-Lago to negotiate a deal on timber and oil sales. Listeners also love Trump’s brash personality when it comes to press conferences. We have three more years to go of the Trump administration. Many people are loving on Trump’s McDonald’s moment when he worked the drive thru during his campaign. People from the Midwest hate a phony, which is why Kamala Harris lost there. Lou hopes the proposed California wealth tax on billionaires does not pass, because billionaires bring money into the state. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Specialist is focused on Executing Today's Task within a Closed framework. The Manager is focused on Equipping the Person for Tomorrow's success within a Semi-Open framework. The Leader is focused on Rallying the People to a better Future within an Open framework. The leader's focus on the Future guide's the manager's equipping for Tomorrow in order for the Specialist to perform his task Today. Have fun designing your structure. Keep it straight and simple as you utilize the facets of organizational structure.
Now we have the sixth and final facet. The Role. Leaders in the Open Framework are responsible to define what effectiveness in the business looks like, so that the Manager in the Semi-Open Framework has enough clarity to create and ensure the procedures and training to equip the Specialists in the Closed Framework for the task they are to execute on. The Specialist, the Manager, and the Leader. These are the different roles in your organizational structure. That's the sixth facet.
