THE WHISTLEBLOWER—I was a reporter and editor in newspapers, including Chicago Today—which had no tomorrow—the Chicago Tribune, and the San Francisco Examiner. I made a shift to magazines becoming TV critic for People, where I came up with the idea for Entertainment Weekly, launching in 1990.After a rocky launch—a story I tell in my new book, Magazine—I jumped ship for the Daily News, then TV Guide, and finally the internet at Advanced Publications. I left to teach and write books about the fall of mass media in 2006. My name is Jeff Jarvis, and this is The Next Page.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press. Jason Weigandt talks to the privateer racer who planned to become a doctor and instead started one of the most popular YouTube channels in the sport. Within seconds of Jason Weigandt's conversation with Jeff Walker, you'll realize Jeff is a really smart guy. His dad is an ER doctor, and Jeff planned to take that same route, getting his bachelor's degree and heading to med school...except he also realized he was young and still had time to live out a little bit of his dirt bike dream in his twenties. He started a YouTube channel just so his dad could watch him practice, but it grew into something with nearly 300,000 subscribers. Jeff will be back to the races this year when Pro Motocross begins next month. Weigandt asks how he got here and what will come next (is he ever going back to med school?) and also dives into the new Insta360 X5 camera, which Walker uses for his work. The Racer X Exhaust podcast welcomes Insta360 on as a new sponsor—they made the Walker interview happen. Yoshimura and OnTrack are still on board also.

The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Greg and Ed jump on the bandwagon and discuss the recent trend of images of ‘action figures' generated by AI. ChatGPT especially seems quite good at creating semblances of plastic blister packs filled with dolls and accessories that might go along with them. Hence, the guys take a look at 9 different images based on Thai stereotypes before offering images of their own action figures, which AI helpfully created for them. Figures include such classic stereotypes as a ‘Pattaya Old Boy,' a Content Creator in Thailand, a Bar Girl, a Chiang Mai Expat, a White Guy in Pai, etc. The guys go through each image and discuss its strengths and weaknesses, and find a surprising amount of nuance and insight into Thai culture in a few of them. The show ends with each discussing the other's action figure - while Greg's looked like an actual doll (though a particularly ripped one) Ed's looked exactly like Ed - just shrinkwrapped. Listen in to hear what accessories each of their action figures came with. Enjoy! :) Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. We also sometimes post on Facebook, you can contact us on LINE and of course, head to our website (www.bangkokpodcast.com) to find out probably more info than you need to know.

Whether you're a seasoned content creator or just AI-curious, this episode will give you real-world examples, tool recommendations, and ideas for how to use AI without replacing your voice or your team.

IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES—Psychedelia has an image problem. At least that's what editor and journalist Hillary Brenhouse realized after she saw through the haze. Both in art and literature, psychedelia was way more than tie-dye t-shirts and magic mushrooms. Instead of letting that idea fade into the mist, she kept thinking about it. And the more she looked, the more she realized maybe she should create a magazine to address this. And so she did.Elastic is a magazine of psychedelic art and literature. It says so right there on the cover of the beautiful first issue that just launched. So this is not your standard issue lit or art mag. After all, this is one backed by … Harvard, and UC Berkeley, and a couple of major foundations. Hillary Brenhouse has learned a lot about the craft and the business of making and selling magazines this past year. Lucky for us, she and her team are quick studies. You can see it on every page of Elastic. And she also may have redefined the literary magazine. Without a single tie-dyed t-shirt or magic mushroom in the lot, man.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press. A production of Magazeum LLC ©2021–2025

Today's guest is Joe Byerly. He's a rising voice in leadership and the founder of: “From the Green Notebook” — a podcast and blog that's been inspiring leaders inside and outside the military for over a decade. Joe spent 20+ years in the U.S. Army, earning prestigious honors like: the Legion of Merit, multiple Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award… all while leading teams in high-stakes environments. But what sets Joe apart is his philosophy: leadership isn't about grinding harder or always pushing to extremes. Instead, Joe believes in AND teaches self-awareness, daily habits, and lifelong learning as the keys to real… sustainable growth. In 2013, Joe started the “From the Green Notebook” as a blog about military-oriented leadership lessons… and he certainly wasn't trying to be an “influencer.” He started it because he saw a need. Well… it quickly became popular inside and outside military… attracting over two million visitors. Then… in 2020, Joe launched the “From the Green Notebook” podcast and it's now in the top 1% of all podcasts. Joe interviews top military and world leaders, bestselling authors, Super Bowl-winning athletes, and Grammy-nominated recording artists. You'll want to check it out! Tennille Jenkins is a content creator and co-founder of the popular and long-running blog The Tennille Life. She studied interior architecture and design in college and started her career as an interior designer before spending several years as a stay-at-home mom with her two daughters. At age 30, she began to consider returning to the workforce and unexpectedly landed a job as a corporate flight attendant with the prestigious private flight company Clay Lacy Aviation. She eventually met Magic Johnson and became his private flight attendant for over eight years. In 2016, craving a creative outlet, she started a blog and Instagram account called The Tennille Life. It was there where she documented her style, travel adventures, and thoughts on aging, confidence, beauty over age 40, and more. By 2020, she'd built a significant following and realized that the time was right for her to make another career leap. So, she left her flight attendant position and became a full-time content creator. Over the last five years, she's grown her audience to over 317,000 followers and has worked with brands like Nordstrom, Shiseido, La Mer, Estée Lauder, Summer Fridays, RoC, Tata Harper, and many more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
