I interviewed University of Louisville Dental Student, Chidi Okpala. Chidi is native to Nigeria, but has lived in the United States for 10 years. Although just entering his second year of dental school, he has already made such a positive contribution to dentistry. As a member of the black community, he also represents a small demographic of the entire dental student body. In this interview, I learned so many amazing things about Chidi. First, he is a strong member of the United States Military and is using that resource to help fund his dental school journey. Next, Chidi is a man devoted to service. When coming onto the podcast, he expressed his sincere interest to help all pre-dental students. He accomplished all of that and more during this episode. Finally, Chidi is extremely inspirational. He shared an empowering message that I believe will make an enormously positive impact moving forward. He expressed his feelings regarding the realities of racial injustice. Furthermore, he helped raise the bar higher in suggesting the necessary steps we can take as a dental community to provide equal opportunity for anyone who wants to pursue dentistry.

In no way does answering these three questions have to dramatically change what you've already written. In fact, I'm going to give you an example as to how you can keep what you already have while briefly providing these three answers. Doing so will be like adding a touch of seasoning to your favorite dinner plate. It won't require much, but it will bring out a ton of flavor. In other words, only a tiny bit of effort here will make an enormous difference! Here are the three questions, but make sure to listen to the podcast for much more detail! 1. Does your personal statement satisfy the elements of good story telling? 2. Does your Personal Statement answer the question “Why do you want to be a dentist?” 3. You've made it this far. That alone is a MAJOR accomplishment that you should take pride in. I was happier the day I submitted my application than the day I actually got accepted (no lie).
