Sahba holds a MA from Teachers College, Columbia University. She speaks regularly about education and racial justice at national and local conferences across the United States and her work is further described in her TEDx UNYP talk: How I Came to Accept My Name. She serves on the Thirteen/WNET Educational Services Advisory Committee where she advises public television station Thirteen (PBS) on the educational interests and needs of its community.Sahba's deeply rooted belief in the nobility of each human being is grounded in her upbringing in a supportive Persian-American family and as a member of the Baha'i Faith. She works tirelessly to bring that belief to the forefront of her work each day. Her background and experiences play a large role in her commitment to the work that Roots ConnectED does to create community across lines of difference and ensure that each person sees the humanity in one another.Enjoying the show? [Urdu Subtitles are available] There is often an idealism associated with space. However, space agencies and space companies, from the beginning have been engaged in dual-use technology - the same technology that can be used for going into space, is also used for war here on Earth. This has been true for the ongoing war in Gaza as well. Our guest today, Sahba El-Shawa, argues that we need to separate these two out and preserve the idealism of space exploration for the benefit of humanity. Sahba El-Shawa is a Jordanian-Canadian interdisciplinary researcher and social entrepreneur originally from Palestine. She is the Founder of the Jordan Space Research Initiative, which aims to bridge sustainable development with space exploration and establish an analog research facility in Jordan.Sahba holds a BASc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, an MSc in Space Studies from the International Space University, and is now pursuing her PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change at IUSS Pavia in Italy. Her PhD research centers around the neuropsychological basis of the Overview Effect, and how making it more accessible using Virtual Reality can help drive sustainable behaviour on Earth. You can find her article, A Palestinian Perspective on Space, Ethics, and Human Rights, here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/ethics-human-rights-space-palestinian-perspective-sahba-el-shawa-ekamf/For more information about Kainaat Studios:https://www.kainaatstudios.comHost: Salman Hameed has a PhD in astronomy and is Charles Taylor Chair of Integrated Science & Humanities at Hampshire College and a member of the Five College Astronomy Department (FCAD) in Massachusetts, USA. Sahba Azami was born an Afghan refugee.Today, she's an Afghan refugee once more. But, for nearly 20 years, she was not a refugee. She was simply an Afghan. And the future was bright.Brought back to the country of her parents' birth after the United States toppled the Taliban, Sahba joined a vanguard of young women who were going to make the most of the precious opportunity that had been denied every generation of Afghan women before them -- She pursued an education.Sahba graduated college. She graduated law school. She joined the Afghan president's administration. She was building a new country. But then the Taliban returned. It's an odd thing to realize: Sahba's life has almost certainly been more dramatically changed and changed again by the decisions of American presidents than my own, but it's a realization I can't shake. The decision of American presidents made it possible for Sahba to return to Afghanistan and pursue an education. The decisions of American presidents contributed to Afghanistan's collapse, separating her from her family, and making her a refugee in a faraway land. But still, she dreams.Today, she shares her story.Support the show

Programleder: Sivert MoeSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/anger. The concept of dual-use has been around since the first satellite was launched into space. The relationship between space, national security, and the military-industrial complex is often taken for granted, but it shouldn't be. On this episode, Sahba El-Shawa and Giuliana Rotola critique the space industry's complicity in militarism around the world.
3 May 2023: On our third episode of the Dark Matter Podcast, interdisciplinary researcher and social entrepreneur Sahba El-Shawa shares her journey and accomplishments, including founding the Jordan Space Research Initiative (JSRI) and her work with the Space Generation Advisory Council and the Moon Village Association. El-Shawa advocates for ethics, human rights and climate action in space and challenges the concept of dual-use in the space industry. She also discusses overlooked aspects of security in space and her passion for creating opportunities for underrepresented communities, and why, in her own words] “colonialism continues to propagate into outer space”. The episode explores the intersection of space and sustainability, including philosophical and ethical considerations related to space exploration and consciousness. JRSI dedication to joined-up thinking is also reflected in the phonetic coincidence of the Arabic word ‘jisri' (جسري), meaning “my bridge”. A vocal advocate for decoupling defense and space, El-Shawa's dedication to her work in equity, ethics and sustainability make her an inspiring role model for anyone interested in making a positive impact in the space industry. El-Shawa founded the Jordan Space Research Initiative (JSRI) to bridge sustainable development and space exploration, with plans to establish an analog research facility in Jordan. She is currently pursuing a PhD in sustainable development and climate change. Her research centres around the ‘overview effect' and using virtual reality to promote sustainable behaviour on Earth.
