My guest today is a woman who is credited with putting poetry back on the map, Donna Ashworth…. Donna came to prominence in 2020, when a poem she wrote about lockdown was read in a viral video to raise money for the NHS. She subsequently self-published her first volume of poetry, To The Women, which sold over 100,000 copies. Unsurprisingly the publishing industry came a-calling. Now The UK's best selling poet, Donna has written eight books, including the bestsellers Wild Hope and I Wish I Knew and you'll find them on the bedside tables of millions of women. Her latest, Growing Brave, a collection of words to soothe fear and let more life in, feels once again, perfectly pitched for the times we're living through. Donna joined me for what is probably the most emotionally intelligent conversation I've ever had here on The Shift. We talked about being dubbed “the difficult one” and how we grow into the labels we're given, how to win the self-worth battle, the secret to being well-boundaried, why she doesn't care for a “man-made” timeline and finding her calling in midlife. Also, I should warn you that Donna is incredibly generous and candid when it comes to talking about her experience of anorexia and how it feels to age with an eating disorder. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Growing Brave by Donna Ashworth and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Text us about this show.Phil Tittle is a guitarist/singer/songwriter with a passion to serve. He served his country for twenty years in the US Air Force, but during that time a guitar was never far away from his hands. After retiring from the USAF, he served veterans by starting a chapter of Guitars For Vets. He also served beginning musicians by establishing a school where they could learn songwriting and guitar. These days he's serving up some great original songs and we're premiering one of them on this show. Phil grew up in Georgia, so a number of southern based artists like the Allman Brothers Band, Waylon Jennings, and Tom Petty have influenced his music, but he has a style all his own. Let's just say Phil's serving up music that's both familiar and fresh."I Wish I Knew" and "Hammer Down" written and performed by Phil Tittle℗ 2024 Phil Tittle Music. We had the pleasure of interviewing Forest Blakk over Zoom video!Acclaimed singer/songwriter Forest Blakk has released his new EP Undone (Love & Loss), available now via Atlantic Records. The 7-track collection arrives alongside a music video companion for the title track, “Undone”.Previewed by the touching new track “You Were Mine,” the EP also includes “Love Somebody Again” – both of which recently joined much of Blakk's discography as featured music on Netflix's Love Is Blind. Blakk's catalog has become somewhat of a sonic-staple, with him having been named the “patron saint” of the show by creators with the Los Angeles Times pointing out “(Blakk's) earnest mid-tempo love songs turn up on ‘Love is Blind' nearly as often as hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey.”Blakk has spent his career soundtracking love stories of all kinds, most recently including his own with “Love Somebody Again” and “I Choose You” – the latter having arrived just days after his Nashville wedding to Tooley Jones in a beautiful ceremony covered exclusively by PEOPLE Magazine. Both songs followed 2022's intimate and relatable Every Little Detail EP, having featured his breakout Platinum-certified smash single “If You Love Her,” which alone has amassed over 470 million total global streams, earned Blakk his official US chart debut on Billboard's Emerging Artists chart, his national US TV debut on ABC's Live with Kelly & Ryan, top 30 placement on the Hot AC radio chart & saw the singer/songwriter collaborate with Meghan Trainor on a stunning duet version. Meanwhile, Blakk's follow-up single “Fall Into Me” (co-written alongside Matchbox Twenty front man Rob Thomas and Gregg Wattenberg) reached top 30 on the Hot AC radio chart and Gold-certification status in his native Canada, in addition to being featured in a perfectly fitting ad campaign for Kay Jewelers. Highlighted as one of PEOPLE Magazine's “talented emerging artists making their mark on the musical landscape” and deemed an “artist on the rise” by Billboard, Blakk made his debut with his 2018 EP Minutes and follow-up 2020 sophomore EP Sideways – the latter of which saw Blakk collaborate with the likes of Will IDAP (Train, Florida Georgia Line), Nick Long (King Princess), Carl Ryden (Ricky Martin, David Guetta), Ollie Green (Freya Ridings, Gavin James) & more to tell a love story through an incredibly realistic and candid lens. The 6-track collection featured singles “I Wish I Knew” (deemed an “introspective look at love and love lost” by American Songwriter) and uplifting anthem of resilience “Put Your Hands Up,” which debuted on an episode of ABC's Grey's Anatomy. A compelling live performer, Blakk has toured extensively supporting NEEDTOBREATHE, Gavin James, Dean Lewis & earlier this year embarked on a sold out 17-date North American headline tour.We want to hear from you! Change Makers: Leadership, Good Business, Ideas and Innovation
We are excited to bring you the second episode of Journeys of Discovery – Change Makers' collaborative series with the Royal Philharmonic Orchesta. Over the course of these interviews, Michael explores fundamental questions about what it means to be human that accompany nine incredible concerts. This week, the themes are Freedom and Redemption, and our guest Katy Emck OBE, knows a thing or two about both of those. As Founding Director of Fine Cell Work, Katy speaks to Michael about how she is helping to transform the lives of prisoners and ex-prisoners through needlework. Prisons can be “places of soul, spirit and connection”, says Katy. Rather than carrying out their sentences “full of rage and self hate”, prisoners should be permitted to embark on a journey of “self understanding and self acceptance”. Craftwork in prisons is common, but Katy feels there is something about the intense focus of needlework that provides a much needed “release from the here and now”. Whilst momentarily being transported out of their cell's confinement, prisoners are also developing a skill, creating something they can be proud of, and generating income. This positions them with the self belief to rebuild meaningful, independent, crime free lives once they have finished their sentences. There is no better depiction of Katy's belief in the power of freedom and redemption than her favourite song by Nina Simone, ‘I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to be Free', which she describes as the ultimate song about freedom, release and the longing we all have to break free of inhibition and to be connected. Through needlework, Fine Cell Work is opening one of the few doors of opportunity available to prisoners – allowing them both a glimpse of freedom, and a chance for redemption.

Do you struggle with body image and self-criticism? Every body, especially yours, needs a friend. Being kind to yourself and a friend to your body is not complacent or lazy. Being a friend to your own body is a performance tool. Why wouldn't you be friends with your body? What if you and your body could be teammates? Could you start by appreciating the functionality of your body? Perhaps thanking it for its service? Remembering where you have been and what you have done together? “Your body has been changing since the day you were born and it will continue to change until the day you die. Fighting that change is a lifelong battle that will bring you much misery and sorrow." If you can accept your body early in this journey of life, you will see it thrive, you will look after it and you will save yourself a world of pain metaphorically and literally. You are not a fashion trend or mannequin, you are a human made of flesh, bones, and heart and you are pretty awesome just the way you are. Don't change the way you look, change the way you see. It's the only adjustment you will ever need.” -Donna Ashworth, I Wish I Knew, 2022. What body parts you can approve of? What body parts can you acceot? What did you and/or your body do well today? Are you willing to stop changing yourself and instead start changing how you see yourself? How might neutral be amazing? What might treating yourself and your struggles and weaknesses with loving amusement look like? If you struggle with body image and being a friend to your body, this episode will help. So will coaching. Every body, especially yours, needs a friend. If you struggle with body image and being a friend to your body, coaching can help. The First 10 things I Wish I Knew are here.Like anyone who works for themselves, I have a litany of things I learned the hard way.All of them have taught me things that now are a part of my subconscious judgement when making decisions. They help me be less wrong in the future. In speaking with founders on The First 10 Podcast about how they found their first 10 customers, I have discovered that some of these mistakes and failures are universal. The only way to learn from your mistakes is to reflect on them and the only thing to do with your failures is to juice them for all they are worth.Don't let them leave the building without picking their pockets. Here is a shortlist of 10 (more) things I've learned along the way that might help you improve your decision-making process and general judgment.

Before Slowthai would release his breakthrough album, “Nothing Great About Britain” and announce himself as the new bad boy of the British rap scene. Before Slowthai would boast several high-end collaborations with the likes of Denzel Curry, Skepta, and A$AP Rocky. Slowthai is the type of rapper who prides himself on his ability to tell a story through his music and over the last couple years, he's thrown his home-nation of Britain under his microscope, finding it to be a country of people chock-full of problems similar to his own. As a young man he was forced to live in community housing, spent too much time drinking, got beat on by an abusive step-father, and stole things just to escape boredom. This 24-year-old built himself a cult-like following off the back of two spectacular EP's, 2017's “I Wish I Knew” and 2018's “Runt”, not to mention a whole slew of sold-out local gigs. But if your only exposure to him has been through website headlines, then you likely don't know the real Slowthai at all, because his antics often overshadow his talent, like that time he chose to perform live at the Mercury Prize ceremony while waving the fake severed head of the UK's Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. Yea that really happened. This guy has some balls bro, that was amazing. Despite his cheeky antics, Slowthai raps about subject matter that is both personal and universal making him one of the most authentic voices in the world of hip-hop today.
