Is this the first time the U.S. President has had to respond to a public outcry and recalibrate his position? Andrew believes that the point of these ICE exercises has nothing to do with immigration reform. They are looking to provoke fear, anger, and terror in the population. Ultimately the responsibility rests with Trump: this is his policy, these are his people. In the back half of the show Rudyard and Andrew break down some of the big domestic developments from last week, specifically Mark Carney's Davos speech. Carney recognizes that Canada is at the centre of a geopolitical crisis. And while this has given him a boost in his personal approval ratings, he hasn't been able to convert that into support for the Liberal Party. Does Carney's Davos speech give us insight into how he will approach CUSMA negotiations? Andrew believes we should not invest too heavily in the success of these talks, and it's time to develop policies to reduce the cost of walking away from trade with the U.S.

Mathias Modica ist ein Mann von Welt. Er wird 1977 in Rom geboren und verbringt dort die ersten drei Jahre seines Lebens, bevor es für drei Jahre nach Paris geht. Pünktlich zur Schulzeit wird die Familie in München sesshaft. Seine Mutter ist Italienerin, sein Vater der Komponist Robert Maximilian Helmschrott. Folglich ist Modica immer von Musik umgeben, schon als Fötus im Mutterleib. Modica bekommt die klassische Ausbildung. Er ist fünf, als er beginnt, Klavier zu spielen. Später studiert er das Instrument, spielt drei Jahre Saxophon und acht Jahre Schlagzeug. Zu Schulzeiten singt er in einer Hardcore-Punk-Band. Sein erstes Konzert spielt er mit 14. Mit seinem Vater bereist er immer wieder die Welt, wenn der Konzerte gibt. "Musik ist für mich so wichtig! Wichtiger als alles andere, außer vielleicht die Luft zum Atmen. Und die Liebe", sagt Modica. Nach dem abgebrochenen Studium arbeitet er beim Privatradio "Jazz Welle Plus", ab 1996 agiert er auch als Veranstalter in München. Zur Jahrtausendwende wird Modica mit Gomma zum Label-Macher für handgemachte Dance-Music. Er selbst tritt mit Munk in Erscheinung, wird zum deutschen Verbündeten von James Murphy und dessen LCD Soundsystem und ist Entdecker von WhoMadeWho. Gomma ist zwar Geschichte, dafür hat Modica 2014 das Dance-Label Toy Tonics gegründet. Neben seiner DJ-Crew wirbt Modica dafür weltweit Künstler*innen und Bands an, die via Soul, Funk, Afro, Italo Disco und mehr wieder Farbe, Freude und das Analoge ins House-Geschehen bringen. Seine Vorliebe für Jazz, Krautrock, Ambient und Artverwandtes lebt Modica außerdem seit 2018 mit dem Label Kryptox aus. Er veranstaltet europaweit regelmäßig Veranstaltungen und Label-Nights. Bei denen tritt er unter seinem DJ-Pseudonym Kapote in Erscheinung. Darunter hat er im März 2025 sein zweites Album "Para Mytho Disco" veröffentlicht. Somosi Rita művészettörténész Mary Ellen Mark: Női sorsok című kiállításról beszél, amely a Mai Manó Házban, a Magyar Fotográfusok Házában látható 2026. január 11-ig. A tárlat Magyarországon először mutatja be a világhírű amerikai dokumentarista fotográfus életművét. Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) a 20. század egyik legmeghatározóbb alkotója, akinek képei mély emberséggel és páratlan érzékenységgel közelítenek a női sorsokhoz, a társadalom peremére szorult közösségek életéhez és az emberi méltóság kérdéséhez.Rita arról beszél, hogy Mark munkái egyszerre szólnak a dokumentálásról és az együttérzésről. „Nem kívülről figyeli a világot, hanem benne él. A képein mindig ott van a kapcsolat a fotós és az alany között – ez a bizalom és az empátia teremti meg a képek erejét.”A kiállítás több ikonikus sorozatot is bemutat. Both hosts agree this was not about restoring democracy. Trump's use of hard power while dismantling the country's soft power and sources of genuine American strength is a backward, simplistic and adolescent view of American power. It is a foreign policy that supposes the 19th century great power competition model is most conducive to American interests. Former Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, a diplomat and former member of the Israeli Knesset, says he has always refused to do public “gladitorial” debates when it comes to representing Israel these last two decades in public life. But the American-born statesman and author changed his long-standing practice to come to Canada this Wednesday Dec. 3 to headline the Munk Debates on stage in Toronto. Organizers are mounting what they admit is their thorniest topic ever: be it resolved that supporting the two-state solution is in Israel's best interests. Oren is on the “no side” together with right-wing former Israeli politician Ayelet Shaked. They'll take on a former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert former cabinet minister Tzipi Livni, who will be arguing for the “yes” side. The debate is already attracting controversy for several reasons: there were no Palestinian voices invited on the program, and organizers are expecting protests, so security has been ramped up. They also had to move from their traditional venue, Roy Thomson Hall, for the first time in 15 years. But despite the side show, Oren believes the Munk Debates are important to reach a massive online audience with reasoned arguments, including why most Israelis oppose the so-called two-state solution in any near future. He calls the proposal “deranged”, especially after Oct. 7, even though most Western countries, including Canada, are doubling down on the idea. And says the two-state solution is a tragedy for Palestinians. So what's in store for Israel, the Palestinians, and the Middle East? At an unexpected juncture in her life, artist Jordana Munk Martin turned to the legacy of her grandmother's trove of textile books. Edith Wyle founded the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles in 1973, curating unconventional exhibits and instilling a love of art in her family. Her granddaughter found inspiration and comfort in the books, then opened the library for other artists to explore. That original collection is now the core of Tatter, a nonprofit organization named for soft, worn, well-used textiles. It includes the iconic Tatter Blue Library, an array of classes, a journal, and retail. “We're really a conversation about cloth, housed in a cultural arts organization,” says Jordana. Tatter's educational offerings began with classes in stitching, adding online classes and presentations when in-person learning became unavailable. One longstanding subject is the World Embroidery Series, which has offered detailed instruction in dozens of stitches and introduction to the rich cultural origins. The library invokes the cultural and spiritual connotations of the color blue. In an elegant dark blue–paneled space, the collection includes not only books but also drawers of buttons, a collection of swatches following the stitch patterns in Barbara Walker's knitting treasuries, tools, and textiles. Tatter's holdings now include treasured collections of 12 women: embroidered samplers, thimbles, darners, textiles, tools, and a luxurious assortment of fiber art books and periodicals. The Brooklyn Museum recently transferred 200 objects to Tatter, reflecting the organization's deep and growing Brooklyn roots. Wie so viele Ausnahmetalente musste auch Jesper Munk, 2013 anlässlich seines Debütalbums "For In My Way It Lies" als "Wunderkind des Blues" gefeiert, bald die schmerzhafte Erfahrung machen, dass im Musik-Business wenig Interesse an Leidenschaft, künstlerischer Weiterentwicklung oder gar Wagnissen besteht. Im scheinbar unauflösbaren Konflikt zwischen Erwartungshaltung von außen einer-, und dem Wunsch nach authentischer Selbstverwirklichung andererseits, gerieten sowohl seine Karriere als auch er selbst zeitweilig ins Schlingern. Doch dem 33-jährigen gebürtigen Münchner ist gelungen, woran andere zerbrachen: eine künstlerische Neuerfindung, die sich im 2024er Album "Yesterdaze" manifestierte, und in deren Zuge er auch eine gesunde, kreative Haltung zum von eingangs erwähnten Problemen beinahe überschatteten eigenen Frühwerk entwickeln konnte. Dies spiegelt sich auch im dieser Tage erscheinenden neuen Doppelalbum "Best Of … Live" wider, mitgeschnitten teils bei Club-Gigs mit seiner Begleitband The Cassette Heads, teils bei einem Konzert mit dem Deutschen Filmorchester Babelsberg im Potsdamer Nikolaisaal. Mert a nők általában nehézségekről számolnak be, még azok is, akik egyébként alig várják, hogy megszabaduljanak a menzeszüktől. Van, aki a nyitott hűtő előtt lel menedéket, más hormonpótlással enyhíti a tüneteket, megint mások pedig alternatív támogatást keresnek. És hogy mit mond a ciklustanácsadó erre? In the past week alone there has been an FBI raid on John Bolton's home and a threat to investigate former New Jersey governor Chris Christie due to his criticism of Trump. Every day there are new indicators to suggest the US is rapidly descending into dictatorship, with the President using the power of his office for his own ends. How can Americans stop this momentum? Andrew and Rudyard then turn to Canada's ongoing trade war with the US. Mark Carney's repeated attempts at being a reasonable interlocutor engaging in good faith negotiations is met with provocation from the US President. Andrew suggests the PM try to manage chaos and stall for time instead of trying to reach a deal. This is a problem that shouldn't be solved; it should be managed. In the final moments of the show Andrew and Rudyard talk about Carney's visit to Ukraine and his offer to send Canadian troops as part of a future security guarantee. Is it time for Canada to accept its defense limitations and its inability to act as the peacemaker it has always aspired to be? Or should we welcome this offer as an opportunity to fulfill our long neglected NATO obligations?
