At an unexpected juncture in her life, artist Jordana Munk Martin turned to the legacy of her grandmother's trove of textile books. Edith Wyle founded the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles in 1973, curating unconventional exhibits and instilling a love of art in her family. Her granddaughter found inspiration and comfort in the books, then opened the library for other artists to explore. That original collection is now the core of Tatter, a nonprofit organization named for soft, worn, well-used textiles. It includes the iconic Tatter Blue Library, an array of classes, a journal, and retail. “We're really a conversation about cloth, housed in a cultural arts organization,” says Jordana. Tatter's educational offerings began with classes in stitching, adding online classes and presentations when in-person learning became unavailable. One longstanding subject is the World Embroidery Series, which has offered detailed instruction in dozens of stitches and introduction to the rich cultural origins. The library invokes the cultural and spiritual connotations of the color blue. In an elegant dark blue–paneled space, the collection includes not only books but also drawers of buttons, a collection of swatches following the stitch patterns in Barbara Walker's knitting treasuries, tools, and textiles. Tatter's holdings now include treasured collections of 12 women: embroidered samplers, thimbles, darners, textiles, tools, and a luxurious assortment of fiber art books and periodicals. The Brooklyn Museum recently transferred 200 objects to Tatter, reflecting the organization's deep and growing Brooklyn roots. A 78. adás vendége Sopronyi Gyula fotográfus, a hazai fotóriporteri szakma egyik meghatározó szereplője. Mind fotográfusként, mind fotórovat-vezetőként és képszerkesztőként ragyogó példával jár elöl. Munkásságát számtalan díjjal jutalmazták, az általa mentorált fiatalabb generáció – nagyon úgy tűnik – ugyanerre az útra lép majd. Tevékenysége ugyanakkor nem csak a fotóriporteri műfajra korlátozódik, színes pályafutása során a kihívásokat keresve sok egyéb izgalmas területre merészkedett.Budapesten született, gyermekkora óta biztos volt benne, hogy a fotóval szeretne majd foglalkozni. A Práter utcai legendás iskolában tanulta ki a szakmát, majd az Esti Hírlapnál, a Blikknél és a Népszabadságnál dolgozott fotóriporterként. Rengeteg időt szakított arra is, hogy bejárja a világot: Indiában, Indonéziában, Vietnámban, később pedig konfliktusövezetekben, pl. Gázában, Pakisztánban, Szíriában vagy Líbiában ismerkedett az élet különböző aspektusaival. Éveken keresztül dolgozott szabadúszóként, megrendelői között volt többek között a The New York Times, a National Geographic, a Huffington Post és az ENSZ Menekültügyi Hivatala is. Nevéhez fűződik a 24.hu fotórovatának sikertörténete, csapatával együtt a nulláról építették fel a szakma egyik legjobb műhelyét. Gyula jelenleg ismét egy nagyobb váltásban van, élete hamarosan izgalmas, új irányokat vesz.A mai adásban beszélgetünk mindenről, amit az imént elsoroltam. Wie so viele Ausnahmetalente musste auch Jesper Munk, 2013 anlässlich seines Debütalbums "For In My Way It Lies" als "Wunderkind des Blues" gefeiert, bald die schmerzhafte Erfahrung machen, dass im Musik-Business wenig Interesse an Leidenschaft, künstlerischer Weiterentwicklung oder gar Wagnissen besteht. Im scheinbar unauflösbaren Konflikt zwischen Erwartungshaltung von außen einer-, und dem Wunsch nach authentischer Selbstverwirklichung andererseits, gerieten sowohl seine Karriere als auch er selbst zeitweilig ins Schlingern. Doch dem 33-jährigen gebürtigen Münchner ist gelungen, woran andere zerbrachen: eine künstlerische Neuerfindung, die sich im 2024er Album "Yesterdaze" manifestierte, und in deren Zuge er auch eine gesunde, kreative Haltung zum von eingangs erwähnten Problemen beinahe überschatteten eigenen Frühwerk entwickeln konnte. Dies spiegelt sich auch im dieser Tage erscheinenden neuen Doppelalbum "Best Of … Live" wider, mitgeschnitten teils bei Club-Gigs mit seiner Begleitband The Cassette Heads, teils bei einem Konzert mit dem Deutschen Filmorchester Babelsberg im Potsdamer Nikolaisaal. In the past week alone there has been an FBI raid on John Bolton's home and a threat to investigate former New Jersey governor Chris Christie due to his criticism of Trump. Every day there are new indicators to suggest the US is rapidly descending into dictatorship, with the President using the power of his office for his own ends. How can Americans stop this momentum? Andrew and Rudyard then turn to Canada's ongoing trade war with the US. Mark Carney's repeated attempts at being a reasonable interlocutor engaging in good faith negotiations is met with provocation from the US President. Andrew suggests the PM try to manage chaos and stall for time instead of trying to reach a deal. This is a problem that shouldn't be solved; it should be managed. In the final moments of the show Andrew and Rudyard talk about Carney's visit to Ukraine and his offer to send Canadian troops as part of a future security guarantee. Is it time for Canada to accept its defense limitations and its inability to act as the peacemaker it has always aspired to be? Or should we welcome this offer as an opportunity to fulfill our long neglected NATO obligations?

Trump indicated a willingness to offer security guarantees, but if Ukraine isn't admitted into NATO, will an Article 5 type protection promise carry any weight? What did Trump promise Putin on Friday that scared European leaders to drop everything and fly in for this emergency meeting? And why can't everyone see that Trump - on every major point - is on the side of Russia? A phony peace agreement could put all of Europe at risk and influence China's calculation vis-a-vis Taiwan. And finally, why are world leaders - including Canada's Mark Carney - so willing to engage in false flattery of Trump at great cost to their own credibility?

Rudyard and Andrew start the show trying to understand why Trump's radical steps on immigration, education, and foreign policy have been met with so little resistance. Where are the checks and balances? Trump doesn't live by the usual dictates that other presidents have. He's not bound by conscience, obedience to convention, or public opinion, and the final test will come when or if he defies a Supreme Court ruling. In the second half of the show Rudyard and Andrew turn to developments in the Middle East where it is becoming increasingly clear that the Netanyahu government does not have a real plan for the future of Gaza. While Israel is often held to an unreasonably high standard when it comes to defending itself, it likewise should not be held to an unreasonably low standard. Israel is using up any international goodwill that it has left, and it is not in their self interest to continue this war. Unfortunately, there is no good or easy option right now, only a range of bad ones. Which one will Israel choose?

Rudyard and Andrew start the show assessing Trump's new trade deal with the EU: no relief on tariffs, carve outs that favour the US, and uncertainty for Europe down the road. Why did European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agree to this deal? Why aren't all countries currently negotiating with the US working together to create a united front? And does the EU's deal provide a window into what Canada can expect from its own trade negotiations with the US? Trump is committed to tariffs and we need to accept this will be part of any future deal. And while we might not have yet seen the effects of tariffs on the price of consumer goods, we will soon as companies accept that this is a long term economic reality. Rudyard and Andrew then turn to supply management, a flawed policy issue that the Canadian government refuses to address. Why are we upholding a redistribution of wealth which benefits an affluent business community at the expense of the country's poor? Rudyard and Andrew talk about the conspiracy moment we are living through. Why is the political right so drawn to conspiracy theories? Andrew suggests that to be conservative is to be skeptical and contrarian, which leads to questioning scientific fact and evidence. It's particularly rife at this moment, when so many people feel powerless and mistrustful of the government. Epstein is especially attractive to this crowd who want to believe the Democratic establishment is complicit in his crimes. The Epstein conspiracy was at the heart of the political movement that brought Trump to power, and the US President is finding that his followers are not falling into line the way they usually do. In the remaining moments of the show Rudyard and Andrew turn to Ukraine and an unprecedented Russian bombing campaign of Ukrainian cities in recent weeks against a backdrop of planned peace talks. Trump is giving Russia time to make concessions, and Ukraine is waking up to the realization that they can't rely on the US. In the meantime a very strange bill was introduced in the Ukrainian parliament to shut down anti-corruption agencies which provoked huge protests in Ukraine. Zelensky's signing of this bill will have important ramifications for Ukraine's image in the world and their internal desire to keep fighting the war.

What should we make of Trump's latest 35% tariff threat on Canada? Rudyard and Andrew agree that while this is not surprising given who we are dealing with, it's also not unique to Canada, with Europe and Mexico likewise getting hit with a tariff threat as well. We are not dealing with a normal interlocutor, and anybody who talks about Trump being a natural negotiator is not familiar with the trajectory of his career and many bankruptcies. Unfortunately for Mark Carney, the US holds most of the cards in cross border negotiations, and if recent history is any indication, there is no way of guaranteeing that Trump will live up to any treaty he signs. In the meantime, Europe and the Indo-Pacific have begun strengthening their relationships with other trade partners which will cost the US bargaining power in the future. But should Canada - in a similar bid to diversify trade - seek to strengthen business ties with China? And can Trump's tariffs - which have already paid off a portion of the US treasury's deficit - actually work as intended and chip away at America's ballooning debt?

Another week brings another tariff threat from the Trump administration, without clarity on who is being targeted and for what reason. Andrew argues that the media must resist applying normal rules of rational behaviour that you would expect from any other presidency. Trump is becoming increasingly erratic in his second term and must continue exceeding expectations with his bad behaviour to satisfy himself and his followers. Meanwhile his Big Beautiful Bill includes tax cuts that will add billions of dollars to America's debt, an irresponsible fiscal plan that mirrors Mark Carney's tax cut plan in Canada. Why are governments around the world happy to increase debts and deficits at the expense of the long term health of their economies? Andrew and Rudyard agree that to increase productivity in Canada we need more investment which comes from tax reform and bringing down the top marginal tax rate - something no government wants to do.

Mark Carney is learning quickly - as the digital services tax debacle proved - that attempting good faith negotiations with the US President does guarantee a positive or lasting agreement. What is the point of making concessions of any kind when the goal posts keep moving? Rudyard and Andrew then turn to America's decision to pause weapon shipments to Ukraine on the heels of easing sanctions against Russia. Andrew believes that Trump has done everything in his power to enhance the Russian position while weakening Ukraine's, thus sending an important message to the world's democracies that American support is not guaranteed. Can Mark Carney's spending commitment to build up Canada's defense protect our borders in an increasingly hostile world dominated by strongmen? And perhaps most importantly, how will we find the money to pay for this?

Rudyard is joined by celebrated American-Israeli author and journalist Yossi Klein Halevi to talk about the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. Yossi explains why this attack has almost unanimous support within Israel and how everything changed after October 7th: a collapse in the illusion that they could live next to a genocidal regime whose stated goal is to eradicate them. Israelis, he says, will not make the same mistake twice. Furthermore, Jews have learned from the past that when your enemy threatens to destroy you, take them at their word. Yossi goes on to explain how Israel hopes to trigger an uprising in Iran against a widely detested regime. How do you activate the disaffected silent majority? Will the people of Iran feel emboldened to take to the streets in this rare opportunity? And finally, Yossi has a message to the West: there should be no moral confusion or ambiguity. This should be a moment when the West rallies behind Israel. And if the US, Canada, and Europe aren't prepared to actively support Israel, at the very least they should not undermine its efforts.

Rudyard welcomes back Globe and Mail columnist Andrew Coyne to talk about Mark Carney's early economic plan for Canada. Andrew suggests that the PM's vision is a mixture of centre right and centre left politics and mimics the language of Stephen Harper. Rudyard and Andrew then try to break down the reasons for Canada's stagnant growth and agree that we need more labour, more investment, and more innovation driven by competition. Talk then turns to this week's meeting between Canada's premiers which will focus on interprovincial trade: how might national unity suffer if trade barriers are dismantled? And why is the Prime Minister dragging his feet on this obvious made-in-Canada solution to Trump's tariff threat?

Rudyard is joined once again by The Globe and Mail columnist Andrew Coyne to reflect on Mark Carney's bumpy first few weeks in office: delaying the spring budget, a chief of staff search coming up empty, and cabinet ministers going off message all point to a challenging start for Canada's newest Prime Minister. Rudyard and Andrew then turn to Canada's relationship with the US. Are we still in the crisis of our lifetime, as claimed by our political leaders during the election? Andrew argues that even if the immediate threat has subsided for now, the crisis helped us see that we are too exposed to a partner we can't depend upon. Leaders must seize on this moment of clarity by beefing up Canada's defense contributions and addressing interprovincial trade barriers.

We are a long way from a fully functioning democracy, according to Globe and Mail columnist Andrew Coyne.
