"Personal statement on joining the OpenAI board" by paulfchristiano

I am excited to be joining the OpenAI nonprofit board, serving on the Safety and Security Committee to support safety oversight. Based on the recent trajectory of capabilities and the continued difficulty of alignment, I now believe there is a meaningful risk that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities leads to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near term. I do not think that the AI industry in general, including OpenAI, is currently on track to reduce this risk to an acceptable level. I'm joining because I believe that if OpenAI rises to the occasion we could significantly reduce risk. The SSC has an important and challenging role in overseeing risk management at OpenAI, and I hope to help provide expertise and assistance in a critical moment. My joining is not an endorsement or criticism of OpenAI's safety practices in particular; I hope that all frontier companies strengthen safety oversight and I am excited to work on this at OpenAI. I believe that the rest of the world should judge OpenAI, and all AI developers, by externally verifiable behavior and results. In the rest of this post, I'll explain why I believe loss-of-control risk is now acute [...] The original text contained 1 footnote which was omitted from this narration. --- First published: September 9th, 2026 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/82z6FvbYRdjYjqigK/personal-statement-on-joining-the-openai-board --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

REPLAY! We're bringing this one back because college admissions season rolls around every year, and the questions parents ask never really change. Your kid's grades are fine. Their activities are fine. So why does the college process still feel like it's swallowing your whole house? That's the question Amy Sherman digs into with Alexis White, nationally recognized college admissions expert and founder of A-List Admissions and Tutoring, in this episode of Wellness Junkies. If you are looking for college admissions advice for parents that calms the noise, this conversation is the reset button.Alexis has worked with students for more than 20 years, with her tutoring business eventually expanding into college admissions. She opens with a mindset shift most parents never hear, then explains why tenth grade is such an important year for narrowing priorities and starting to think more seriously about the college process. She also breaks down a piece of high school college prep most people skip. Alexis shares her honest take on touring safety schools before junior year, and why the reaction almost always surprises parents.Later, Amy and Alexis get into staying sane during college applications when the comparison spiral hits, why parents need to tune out everyone else's opinions, and a specific college essay mistake Alexis sees English teachers make again and again. The conversation also gets into the anti-college movement gaining traction online, plus a few under-the-radar schools Alexis is loving right now.Press play if you want to walk away from this one feeling steadier than when you hit start.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Amy Introduces Alexis White and Why This Episode Matters07:45 Staying Sane During the College Process14:30 The Importance of Passion Over Grades21:06 Personal Statements and Supplemental Essay Strategy24:14 Staying on Top of Deadlines and Application Scheduling26:53 How Test Optional Rules for the SAT and ACT Keep Shifting33:44 Leadership Advice for Quieter and Introverted Kids39:22 The Anti College Movement and Why Alexis Pushes Back45:12 Underrated Schools, Scholarships, and Alexis's Beauty HackConnect with Alexis White:Follow Alexis on TiktokFollow Alexis on InstagramVisit the Alexis College Expert websiteFor More on this Episode: Read the full show notes here

A resident read a student's personal statement and asked why she didn't just use ChatGPT. The comment landed like a wound. In this episode, certified coach and professor Kathleen Muldoon returns to unpack what a residency personal statement is actually for, and why an algorithm can't do it for you. This episode is based on her article "Why ChatGPT can't write your residency personal statement," published on KevinMD. You will hear why the product was never the essay but the self-knowledge that comes from writing it, how AI tends to average out the distinctive voice and sharp edges that make an applicant feel human, and where a tool like ChatGPT can still help without taking over the whole process. She also weighs whether AI detection tools unfairly flag applicants whose first language isn't English. Hear why she says the real question was never whether AI wrote it, but whether the person still comes through. This episode is brought to you by ModMed.

Fontes - FORTIN, Denis. G. From feeling overwhelmed by the LSAT to not knowing how to approach personal statements, autobiographical sketches, resumes, and the many moving parts of an application, she opens up about how heavy the process can feel when students are trying to figure it out alone.Together, Adrienne and Meera discuss why the Personal Statement Accelerator was created, what students were asking for on strategy calls and at events, and why focused personal statement support is so needed. This program was built from what AYG was hearing directly from students: they needed help understanding their story, uncovering their why, and writing a personal statement that feels authentic, strategic, and aligned with the future they are creating.Adrienne explains how the Personal Statement Accelerator takes students from start to finish through strategy, structure, writing, editing, revision, and submission. Meera also shares why understanding your “why” is one of the most important parts of the application process, and why students should not overlook their written materials in favour of focusing only on grades, GPA, or test scores. If you are applying to law school, medical school, dental school, graduate school, or another competitive academic program, this episode is a reminder that your personal statement is not just another requirement. It is one of the clearest opportunities to help an admissions committee understand who you are, what you are creating, and why you are ready for the next step. What You'll Learn:✔ What Meera's own application journey felt like before AYG✔ Why the law school application process can feel scary and overwhelming✔ How personal statements fit into the larger application strategy✔ Why your “why” matters so much in your written materials✔ Why students should not rely on Google, YouTube, TikTok, or forums for application strategy✔ What the AYG Personal Statement Accelerator includes✔ How admissions committee insight changes the way you write✔ Why structure matters, but self-understanding matters even more✔ How to start building a personal statement you feel proud of✔ Why starting early can reduce stress and build confidenceConnect with Adrienne!Looking for support with your graduate or professional school applications? The Process of Becoming a Counsellor - How to Write a Personal Statement for a Counselling Course In Episode 377 of the Counselling Tutor Podcast, your hosts Rory Lees-Oakes and Ken Kelly take us through this week's three topics: Firstly, in ‘Ethical, Sustainable Practice', they explore AI apps and depersonalisation in counselling - looking at how AI tools may risk weakening the therapeutic relationship and the importance of maintaining human connection in therapy. Then in ‘Practice Matters', Rory speaks with Jane Godward and Tara Fox about their new book, The Process of Becoming a Counsellor: Navigating the Transformation - discussing the realities of counselling training, personal development, and choosing the right course. And finally, in ‘Student Services', Rory and Ken discuss how to write a personal statement for a counselling course - including what tutors are really looking for and how to present yourself authentically. AI Apps and Depersonalisation in Counselling [starts at 03:40 mins] In this section, Rory and Ken explore AI apps and depersonalisation in counselling, examining how AI tools may affect the therapeutic relationship and why therapists need to critically reflect on the use of AI in practice. Key points discussed include: The therapeutic relationship is built on empathy, shared humanity, and human connection - something AI cannot truly replicate. AI tools may provide generic or “stock” responses that risk reducing the individuality and nuance of client work. Therapists need to consider whether AI tools undermine trust, rapport, or the client's sense of autonomy. AI-generated summaries and interventions may miss important relational cues such as body language, silence, emotional tone, and previous session context. Critical thinking is essential when using AI in counselling practice - therapists must ensure clinical judgment remains central. The key ethical question is whether a tool supports the therapeutic relationship or risks replacing aspects of human support. The Process of Becoming a Counsellor [starts at 27:00 mins] In this week's ‘Practice Matters', Rory speaks with Jane Godward and Tara Fox about their new book, The Process of Becoming a Counsellor: Navigating the Transformation. Key points from this conversation include: Many students begin counselling training without fully understanding the personal transformation involved in becoming a counsellor. Counselling training is more than academic study - it involves deep personal development and self-reflection. Choosing the right modality and training provider is essential, as not every course will suit every student. The book explores the “shift” from learning counselling skills to becoming a competent practitioner able to work safely with vulnerable clients. The authors discuss the importance of diversity, identity, and the “social graces” model in helping students explore their own experiences and assumptions. Students are encouraged to trust the process of training, recognising that growth and change happen gradually throughout the journey. How to Write a Personal Statement for a Counselling Course [starts at 49:54 mins] In this section, Rory and Ken discuss how to write an effective personal statement for counselling training or counselling-related work. Key points include: A strong personal statement should be authentic, reflective, and written in your own voice rather than sounding overly formal. Tutors are looking for sincerity, self-awareness, and evidence that you understand the personal and academic demands of counselling training. Clearly explaining why counselling matters to you and what motivates you to train is an important part of the statement. Relevant experience does not have to come from counselling itself - life experience, teamwork, volunteering, and helping roles can all be valuable. It is important to show openness to learning, personal growth, and self-reflection. Applicants should tailor their personal statement to the specific course or role they are applying for and consider whether it is the right fit for them. College admissions get stressful fast, and for many parents, it starts with the feeling that the rules keep changing and no one explains them clearly.Amy names that tension early in the episode, and Alexis White helps slow it down. Drawing from her work as a college expert and her experience as a parent, Alexis talks through the college process in a practical way. The focus stays on parenting through this stage with intention, prioritizing mental health, realistic expectations, and meaningful support for parents who want to guide their kids without letting stress take over family life.Rather than chasing prestige or checking every box, the conversation asks parents to pause and reassess. What actually fits your child right now? How do grades, activities, and testing reflect who they are, not who they are supposed to be? Alexis offers clear guidance on timing, essays, and decision points, with the reminder that consistency and perspective matter more than perfection. This episode centers on support for parents navigating a major transition. College admissions are treated as a developmental step, not a verdict. In this episode of Admissions Straight Talk, host Dr. Valerie Wherley sits down with Accepted Admissions Consultant Alicia Nimonkar, an expert writing coach with a background in composition and rhetoric, to unpack one of the most important – and often most intimidating – parts of the medical school application: the personal statement. Alicia explains how applicants can use the AAMC's premed competencies as a framework to craft authentic, focused narratives that highlight their strengths. From creating a timeline of formative experiences to developing an outline that connects recurring themes, she shares how to identify what makes your story uniquely yours – and how to make it resonate with admissions committees.Alicia also offers practical insight into the writing process itself: how many drafts it really takes, when to stop editing, and how to avoid the “too many cooks in the kitchen” trap of excessive feedback. She and Dr. Wherley discuss the power of resilience, effort, and voice – exploring how applicants can address challenges without sounding apologetic and how to write from a place of strength and advocacy. Your personal statement should show, not tell, how a particular experience from your resume is going to make you a successful law student and lawyer. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to cover too many positions or experiences. The personal statement is a chance to illustrate your character, not an unnecessary resume recap. 9:41 – When to Start WritingIsaac finds himself with several hours of free time every day, even after his LSAT studying. The guys give him the green light to start working on his personal statement, but the LSAT still has to come first. They also suggest spending time on professional development through networking and research to make informed decisions about his legal career. 17:46 – Personal Statement on RunningJust because you don't have legal experience on your resume doesn't mean you don't have a valuable story to share. Riley asks about writing a personal statement about marathon running. While Ben and Nathan don't dismiss the idea outright, they explain why it might not be the best option. Customer service, familiarity with regulation and compliance, and tenacity are among the lawyery attributes that Sean could highlight from his experience in retail and landscaping. 22:37 – Personal Statement Gong Show MarathonIn a special edition of the Personal Statement Gong Show, Ben and Nathan bring nine contestants who are looking to break Sophia's record of 34 lines.
