A daily podcast giving you a dollop of advice from registered nutritionist Kate Freeman. The Daily Dollop calls out nutritional ‘woo’, removes food stress and teaches you how to build healthy eating habits instead of dieting.
Don't worry. This is not an episode about shaming foods or nutrients, like alcohol and sugar, and making you feel guilty about your food choices over the festive season. We're not judgmental nor do we make you feel guilty about food at The Healthy Eating Hub. It's not what we do. This episode is a compilation of traditional Christmas foods that are just plain gross. Foods that you know might be served on your family's table but you avoid it at all costs, simply because you can't stand it! To help me put this episode together I rallied the troops over on my Facebook page for their worst Christmas foods ever! This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist. You may have good nutritional knowledge and be willing to make positive changes to your eating habits but without adequate kitchen skills you'll be left feeling frustrated and bored. If you can't translate that nutrition information into a meal on your plate, three times per day, seven days per week, 52 weeks per year, what's the point? You don't need to be a masterchef, or even like cooking, but you do need the ability to create tasty and enjoyable food without too much fuss. Otherwise, you'll easily default back to tasty, convenient foods when you're tired of plain chicken and boiled broccoli. In this episode, I've got 12 kitchen items that I believe are essential for eating healthy and enjoyable meals! This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist. I've been helping people lose weight for a long time. After years of chatting to people about their health, their food, their exercise, their daily habits and all the factors that go into successful weight loss, not to mention losing weight myself, I've concluded a few things: Most people are not successful at losing weight. If people happen to be successful at losing weight, they're not successful at keeping it off. Weight loss is super hard. Maintaining weight loss is even harder, for a whole bunch of different reasons. And if I were to get into the biochemistry of how our bodies function metabolically and why it's so hard, I'd need 100s of podcast episodes. Just know that it's complicated. Despite the complications, there are some common mistakes that many people make. One or more of these reasons might be why, year after year, you're still “trying to lose weight” – often frustrated and over the constant mind games! In this episode I'm going to chat through the main reasons you're not losing weight and what you can do about it. This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist. “Please leave the nutritionist at home” is a common sentiment of my family whenever there's a party involved. I mean, come on, let's not ruin a good party by being too healthy. It's a common social idea that healthy and fun can't go together in the same sentence. We say things like “Let's be evil and eat cheesecake” and “I was naughty last night and drank lots of wine”. Party, fun, alcohol, sugar. Party, fun, water, vegetables. Hmmmm…. It's also becoming more common, however, that people are so obsessed with healthy eating that God forbid a piece of cake pass through their lips. They scrutinise every nutrition information panel for sugar and even truly healthy foods get removed from the diet for fear that their consumption might end in peril. So how do we strike a healthy balance for healthy eating at Christmas time? In this two-part episode series, I'm chatting through a bunch of delicious and nutritious Christmas party food ideas so you can have fun and nourish your body at the same time! A few years ago I asked Facebook what eating habit they wished they could break. The most common answer? Stop eating sweet foods after dinner. When it comes to changing an eating habit that has proven difficult to break, you've got to move beyond behaviour management and dig a little deeper into your psyche. In this episode I'm chatting about how to stop eating sweets after dinner and get back in control of your food choices. This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist. If simply knowing what to eat made us healthy eaters there would be absolutely no need for any of the diet plans or nutrition programs, we find on the market today. Unfortunately, we do have problems putting what we know about nutrition into practice which leads us to being inconsistent with our eating patterns day to day and often frustrated with ourselves and our subsequent lack of results. Your mindset – how you view the world, how you view yourself and the truths that you base your feelings and actions upon – will have a profound influence on your decision-making process when it comes to choosing what you put in your mouth. In this two-part episode series I'm chatting about 8 mindsets that will sabotage your long term nutrition. This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist. If you follow any fitness or wellness influencer on Instagram and Tik Tok you'd have come across the ‘what I eat in a day' posts. These posts, although potentially well-meaning, can actually be super problematic, particularly if you've been dieting on and off for many years and find yourself confused and stressed about nutrition. You don't need some random person on social media with good genetics, flattering lighting and photoshop to give you nutrition advice. What their body looks like is NOT a result of the food that they showed you they eat! In the episode of The Daily Dollop I discuss what I eat in a day, why it's completely irrelevant to your nutrition and food choices and why you should not pay attention to these posts. I take a food-based approach to all my nutrition advice, and we are ‘food first' nutrition professionals at The Healthy Eating Clinic and The Healthy Eating Hub. This means that we always help people address their nutritional needs by improving their habits, skills, and behaviours around food to subsequently improve their long-term dietary intake. This is our priority. However, there are several circumstances when supplementation is necessary to help maximise the health of the individual: gut disorders, allergies to multiple food groups, deficiencies due to non-dietary factors such as iron or vitamin D deficiency and a bunch more that are highly based on the individual. In this episode I chat to senior pharmacist Karen Campbell from Capital Chemist on how to choose a vitamin or mineral supplement that's right for you and some tips for maximising the health benefits. We chat about her personal journey with an eating disorder and her role now, as an eating disorder recovery coach. We chat about her personal journey with an eating disorder and her role now, as an eating disorder recovery coach. We discuss her thoughts on the slippery slope that is dieting and fad diets, that often start off innocently enough with people wanting to lose a few kilos and be healthier but it then becomes unhealthy leading to disordered eating practices and eventually an eating disorder. Here is the darker side of diet culture and how you can get help. This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist. Australia's premiere community pharmacy where loyalty matters. With the arrival of a fresh season, we're bombarded with the pressure of ‘bikini weather' and often start thinking about shedding kilos as we awaken from hibernation. I was chatting to a client about little tips she could do to make a healthy eating work for her. “These are such great hacks” she said. I used to hate that terminology, especially when it came to food. I'm mean, you're not a computer. You can't just ‘hack' into your hard drive and ‘voila!' You're a healthy eater. It doesn't work like that. However, I've decided that any tip I can offer that helps make this process of changing your eating habits easier, then I'm the healthy food hacker for you… So, in the spirit of new seasons and the opportunity to make some healthy changes, here are my healthy food hacks to help you with developing healthy eating habits. I want to remove the shame and stigma from eating because you're feeling emotional and stressed! The sooner people remove the morality off these behaviours, the sooner they'll be able to feel more in control of their choices, and it's absolutely and totally fine to decide that you are going to emotionally eat! And so, to do that, I'm going to tell you about the time that I felt so desperately in need of chocolate that I resorted to eating cooking chocolate that I found in the back of my pantry! And through that moment I discovered a recipe for one of my favourite chocolate snacks ever! This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist. Summer in Australia is all about the BBQ. It's the perfect meal to throw together when you catch up with friends, when you're out off the grid in the bush or even when you're at the local park enjoying some time outdoors. Like all elements of nutrition and healthy living I encourage them not to take an all or nothing approach. In this episode I discussmy top tips for a healthy summer BBQ and how to make it weight loss friendly. That way you can enjoy the time with your loved ones and feel confident in your food choices long term. This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Capital Chemist.
