I Sought The Lord, And He Heard, And He Answered!Psalm 34:4-5 “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.”When I saw this verse this morning, I thought of an elevation song that is on the KLOVE radio station a lot. I know I have mentioned it before, but if you haven't checked out KLOVE, you really should. You can google what the closest station to you is, or you can get the KLOVE App and listen from there. Not only do they have great Christian music, but the DJs are great, too, and they are always talking about uplifting stuff and not the news or politics. It is great!Anyway, I thought I would share this song with you as the Lord does answer us when we seek Him out. He can deliver us from all of our fears if we let Him. I also like how the verse says that those who look upon him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Imagine if you could live your life never being ashamed. Did you even know that was possible? All things are possible through Christ! The song is called Trust In The Lord and is sung by Elevation Worship. Here are the words:… Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mineHe's been my fourth man in the fire, time after timeI love this line. He's been the fourth man in the fire, time after time. Do you know what they are talking about here? Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are three Jewish men from the Bible's Book of Daniel who were thrown into a fiery furnace for refusing to worship a golden statue set up by King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar had his servants turn the furnace up so that the fire was white hot. These three men were bound up and thrown into the fiery furnace. The king was watching the whole thing. But after they were thrown in, those watching didn't hear screams or anything. When the king looked in, he saw that the three men were standing in the fire, untouched by the flames and that there was a fourth man in the fire there with them. This is such a great story of God's power. My favorite part of that story is that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn't seem to be afraid at all about going into this fiery furnace. I love what they said before going into the furnace. Daniel 3:17-18, "If it is so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” Can you imagine how brave these men were? They weren't afraid to die for what they believed in. I love that they knew God could save them and yet they also knew that might not be what God had in store for them and yet were willing to risk it all anyway. What an incredible faith and trust in the Lord!Next, the song says,Born of His Spirit, washed in His bloodAnd what He did for me on Calvary is more than enoughI just had a conversation about this yesterday with a friend. Do we believe this? Do you believe that what Jesus did on Calvary is more than enough? We tend to get caught up in our sins and our past, and we can't seem to forgive ourselves. My friend said she had a conversation with the Lord once. He asked her three times if she believed He died on the cross for her. Each time, she said yes. Each time, God said that she didn't believe that was true. Finally, she asked the Lord why He kept saying it wasn't true, and He said that if she did, she would forgive herself. Isn't that powerful? God wants this freedom for all of us. He died to free us from our sins, our past mistakes, and all we have done. When we hold onto those mistakes, when we hold onto that sin, when we can't forgive ourselves, we are telling the Lord that what He did for us on Calvary wasn't enough. Is that what we really believe? If it was enough, why can't we forgive ourselves?Next the song says… I trust in God, my SaviorThe one who will never failHe will never failWe can trust in the Lord. He will never fail us. This can be hard for us to believe because people fail us all the time. However, God is not a person. He will never fail us. We can count on Him to be there for us. He is there in the good times, and He is there in the bad times. He is always there. He never leaves your side!Next, it says… Perfect submission, all is at restI know the author of tomorrow has ordered my stepsDid you know that God is the author of tomorrow? He is helping you write your story. He has ordered your steps. Does that mean you will never take a wrong step, no. God has laid out our steps before us, but we have free will, and sometimes we take the wrong path. However, God can always turn us around and get us on the right path again. If we are looking to God for direction. If our eyes are fixed on Him, we will see the path He has laid out for us, and we will follow it. We get lost when we take our eyes off the Lord.Next, the song says,So this is my story, and this is my songI'm praising my risen King and Savior all the day longI know I say this all the time, but this is the key to so much happiness and joy. We need to praise the risen King and Savior all day long! We need to praise the Lord when we are on the top of a mountain, and we need to praise Him when we are in a valley. It may be more important to praise Him when we are in a valley because we tend to forget how good He is when we are in a valley. We tend to turn away or feel lost when we are in a valley, and if we are praising the Lord, it will help remind us of His goodness. Another benefit to praising, especially when we are in the valley, is that it confuses the enemy. He doesn't understand why we would praise the Lord when we are feeling down, lost, or abandoned and so when He sees us doing this, He flees. Also, anytime evil spirits hear the name of the Lord, or especially the name of Jesus, they flee.Next, the song repeats, … I trust in God, my SaviorThe one who will never fail. He will never fail. A few times and then it says,… He didn't fail you thenHe won't fail you nowThis is a reminder of something we can do when we are scared the Lord won't come through. We can look back at our lives and see all the times God has come through for us in the past. If He didn't fail you when you called out to Him the last time, He won't fail you now, either. If you are struggling to believe this, look back to some previous times when you called out to the Lord. Did He fail you? Did He abandon you when you needed Him? The Lord is the same yesterday, today, and always. If He didn't abandon you then, He won't now either! The rest of the song repeats this chorus several times and then repeats some of the words from about.… I sought the Lord and He heard and He answeredI sought the Lord and He heard and He answeredI sought the Lord and He heard and He answeredThat's why I trust Him, that's why I trust HimWhat about you? Have you sought the Lord? Did He hear? Did He answer? That is how you know you can trust Him. God tells us in several places in the Bible that when we ask, He answers. This means that He hears us when we ask. Trust in Him!Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening! Lord, we love you, and we want to trust you. Please help us. Why is it so hard for us to trust you at times? Lord, we ask that you help us remember all the times you were there for us. Highlight the times that you answered our prayer, and yet we have forgotten. We love you, Lord, and we thank you for always being that fourth man in our fire time after time. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name. Amen!Thank you all for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to bringing you a new witness tomorrow morning. Remember Jesus loves you and so do I! “Black motherhood has consistently been a contested space. Black women have just fought for their rights to be. And so when we say Black motherhood, to me, the reality of Black motherhood itself is the resistance. And we still stand and we claim what it means to be Black mothers. We've got to consistently stand firm trying to raise healthy children in spite of it all.”Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas (Episcopal Divinity School) discusses the gift and grace of Black motherhood to the world and what we can learn from Black mothers about love and resistance. Appreciating the example they set for the meaning of justice that emerges from love, and the capacity for love that emerges from justice, Dr. Douglas offers beautiful examples and expressions of the joy and abundance that Black motherhood means. She reflects on the impact of her maternal grandmother on her life; the Langston Hughes poem “Mother and Son”—which is a testimony of perseverance and robust agency; the glorious hush harbor sermon and ode to self-love and dignity, delivered by Baby Suggs Holy, known as “The Sermon in the Clearing" in Toni Morrison's Beloved. It gave me chills to hear Dr. Douglas read the sermon. She looks back to the example set by Mamie Till, the mother of Emmitt Till, who as a 14 year old boy was lynched in 1955. And Dr. Douglas speaks in witness to the fear, pain, and grief of the Black mother during the Black Lives Matter era, drawing not only on her expertise in Womanist Theology, but her close relationship with her own son.“The Sermon in the Clearing”Toni Morrison's Beloved“Here,” she said, “in this here place, we flesh; flesh that weeps, laughs; flesh that dances on bare feet in the grass. Love it. Love it hard. Yonder they do not love your flesh. They despise it. They don't love your eyes; they'd just as soon pick em out. No more do they love the skin on your back. Yonder they flay it. And O my people they do not love your hands. Those they only use, tie, bind, chop off and leave empty. Love your hands! Love them. Raise them up and kiss them. Touch others with them, pat them together, stroke them on your face 'cause they don't love that either. You got to love it, you*! And no, they ain't in love with your mouth. Yonder, out there, they will see it broken and break it again. What you say out of it they will not heed. What you scream from it they do not hear. What you put into it to nourish your body they will snatch away and give you leavins instead. No, they don't love your* mouth. You got to love it. This is flesh I'm talking about here. Flesh that needs to be loved. Feet that need to rest and to dance; backs that need support; shoulders that need arms, strong arms I'm telling you. And O my people, out yonder, hear me, they do not love your neck unnoosed and straight. So love your neck; put a hand on it, grace it, stroke it, and hold it up. And all your inside parts that they'd just as soon slop for hogs, you got to love them. The dark, dark liver—love it, love it, and the beat and beating heart, love that too. More than eyes or feet. More than lungs that have yet to draw free air. More than your life-holding womb and your life-giving private parts, hear me now, love your heart. For this is the prize.” Saying no more, she stood up then and danced with her twisted hip the rest of what her heart had to say while the others opened their mouths and gave her the music. Long notes held until the four-part harmony was perfect enough for their deeply loved flesh.Mother to SonBY LANGSTON HUGHESWell, son, I'll tell you:Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. It's had tacks in it,And splinters,And boards torn up,And places with no carpet on the floor—Bare. But all the timeI'se been a-climbin' on,And reachin' landin's,And turnin' corners,And sometimes goin' in the darkWhere there ain't been no light. So boy, don't you turn back.Don't you set down on the steps'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.Don't you fall now—For I'se still goin', honey,I'se still climbin',And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.About Kelly Brown DouglasThe Rev. But that's where we run into a problem…we often know WHAT we should do, but do we do it with FOCUS + CONSISTENCY? Or do we spend most of our time chasing all the SHOULD-DOs that keep popping up and demanding or distracting our time? Friends, you might have noticed something BIG today as you clicked ‘play' on this episode…The Mindful Minute has a NEW name!!!After 8 years of sharing recordings of Monday night meditation class on this podcast; I felt it was time to shift, to level up, to adjust in response to the times we find ourselves in…As a meditation teacher, when I share what I do, I very often hear 1 of 2 comments:I want to meditate but I just don't have enough timeI tried meditation once but I think too muchAnd so, this podcast was originally built on the premise of responding to those two statements. My goal was (and is) to offer accessible, enjoyable meditation practices with the reminder that you can meditate in 5 or 10 minutes just as effectively as you can in 20 - 30 minutes. But then, I started noticing a steady uptick in another response when I mention that I am a meditation teacher… This response goes something like - I DO meditate. I do my 10 minutes, and I am still struggling. I'm still anxious. Overwhelmed. Scared. Despairing. And, the truth is, my friends, me too. We are in times of massive change and upheaval, and that is going to require more than a 10-minute nervous system reset. It asks us to wake up. To be less afraid of the dark. To be more tender with ourselves and all beings in this universe. The work I hope to explore with you on this podcast moving forward is HOW? How do we do this? What makes us feel steady & well? What makes me feel resourced? I know without a shadow of doubt, from my own meditative experiences as well as through the teachings of many ancient wisdom holders, that embodying our connection to the natural world is perhaps the most important thing we can do for the wellbeing of humans, the planet and the more-than human that live here with us. Hence the new name of this podcast - Our Mindful Nature. It is a bit of a double entendre. Our Mindful Nature as in our inner nature, our own mindfulness, but also it references the wisdom of the natural world that surrounds and supports us. And so, most of our meditation practices moving forward will be nature-based. And, we will be curious about other mindful practices that support this sense of well-being.In the words of Shefa Gold - Can I open to trust the wilderness, the unknown, the Mystery that risesin response to my loving, curious longing?Join me for today's talk and 10-minute guided meditation practice.Special thank you to Dr. Chanti Tacoronte-Perez for the wisdom and insight regarding the vast spectrum of practices that make up our well-being. In today's episode I have an extremely powerful and moving conversation with a former client (and now friend) Carissa Ambis.Carissa shares her entire journey from being made fun of for being a “chubby” kid to gaining and losing 50-60 pounds multiple times through extreme dieting and exercise to investing the time and energy on herself to finally find a sustainable relationship with food and her body which has resulted in a body weight she feels healthy and fantastic at. It is an incredible honor to have former clients come on to the podcast because there is nothing more powerful than hearing the story of someone else who has gone through what you've gone through. Here is just a little of what we cover in today's episode:—How recognize your own disordered eating and/or exercise —What you learn in coaching and how it actually creates the change you've been looking for—What self trust is and what it looks like in action—Carissa's examples of exactly why we keep doing diets even when we hate them—How you can work on fat loss and improving negative body image at the same timeI truly hope that hearing Carissa's story makes you feel less alone and hopeful that change is possible for you too. ______________________________________________________If you're curious about what 1:1 coaching is like, click here to schedule a free consult. Mensimah's Round Table: Conversations with Women of Power and Grace
What Does the World Need? The world needs you to come alive! One of my favorite songs for children is “This Little Light of Mine.. I know there are many versions out there, But I will pick Sam Cooke's version anytime! This episode's title is about Shining our Light! There are currently about over 20 plus wars going on, all being fought on many different fronts. The outrage for me is how women and children are the ones that suffer the most from the casualties of war. They continue to use weapons of mass destruction, often ignoring the common sense, peaceful tools available to all of us. How can we counter that? We cannot engage on the same low frequencies that create these situations. Creatively, we can choose to engage differently and spiritually … By knowing what makes us really come alive; noticing the circumstances that light us up from the inside and make us shine. What the world needs now is for people, for you and me to come alive. I believe in the human capacity to do good. I believe in the empowerment of self and that if we can generate that inner power and goodness, we can overcome anything together. It is imperative that we choose a cause to serve humanity in some capacity, and because there is power in numbers, we can effect change. Helplessness and hopelessness are not options! This is a call to all those who feel that this human condition can be improved. That is the love of God, of Christ Jesus, of the Buddha, of Allah and of many cosmic beings of light who endow our experience with love. Let us bring forth, as part of our spiritual journey, growth, and healing, a deep love and mercy that touch the souls of the “other.”You can assert certain truths about who you truly are: a divine being having a physical experience. When you feel discouraged, say this:I am all that is knownI am all that is unknownI am in the drops of the tearI am in the grain of sandI am in the seerI am seenI am in the unborn and in the undyingI am the one who is bornI am the one who diesI am beyond time, yet I am found in timeI am totality and so are youI am the sun, the moon and the stars,Infinity, I AmEternity, I AmImmortality, I Am!Loop back around and feel You are the Presence. And by shining our light, we as women of power and grace, can change the world, one woman one light, one love, at a time.Autobiographyhttps://mensimah.com/sankofa/Please subscribe/support our channelsReflective/Inner Work: https://www.patreon.com/join/mensimahshabazzphdDonation/Support: https://PayPal.Me/MRTPodcast https://mensimahs-round-table.captivate.fm/supporthttps://mensimahs-round-table-conversations.onpodium.co/donateContact Links:Mensimah's Round Table - Join Women's Group on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/191292605667511Mensimah's Round Table Podcast:https://mensimahs-round-table-conversations.onpodium.co/https://mensimahs-round-table.captivate.fmWebsite:https://mensimah.comInstagram:@mensimahshabazzphdYouTube:https://youtube.com/@mensimahsroundtableCreate Your E-book:Write your story using an easy E-book template!http://sikayede.sqribblex.hop.clickbank.net

Mama, one of my favorite holidays is coming up: the 4th of July! It's the epitome of summer and I don't know about you, but I want to make sure I actually get to enjoy this holiday. I can't wait to relax and enjoy some good food. That being said, I also don't want this one day to completely take me away from my health goals and all the work that I put in every day to feel good in my body.Too often, we are told that enjoying a holiday and living a healthy life are contradictory. That you have to either say no to everything you want to eat or go crazy and binge anything and everything that sounds good. But this isn't true! You can be healthy and still enjoy a burger and a White Claw at your 4th Of July party!Today, I want to show you how to find balance between enjoying your food, having a drink, relaxing, and being present with your family all without having to restart your health goals the next day. These are my best tips to help you lead a happy, healthy life during holidays, and honestly, any day!Create a meal plan ahead of timeI love meal planning. It's one of the best things you can do to make sure you stick to your health goals. Meal planning also makes my life easier as a busy mama because I do it once a week and then don't have to stress every day about what I'm going to cook! A holiday meal plan is going to be essential if you want to stick to your health goals and relax. If you want to spend the 4th relaxing by the pool, then you need to make a plan ahead of time. Spend 20 minutes a few days before the holiday to make your food plan. Plan out each meal, plus snacks, then get your groceries, and prep as much food as you can ahead of time. Then, the day of you don't have to stress about cooking, or accidentally eating outside of your food boundaries. Plus, you won't have to get up to feed your kids every 15 minutes! You can tell them to go grab the snacks/meals you already prepped out of the fridge and you can enjoy yourself. If you want to learn exactly how to meal plan for a holiday so that you can stay inside your nutritional boundaries, go check out my blog post from Memorial Day. It talks all about fitting your favorite foods and drinks into your nutritional plan!Plan activities that keep the family movingOne unhealthy habit that's easy to fall into on a holiday is not moving your body. Movement plays a huge role in health and fitness, so make it a part of your holiday plans!Instead of just focusing on exercising or going to the gym on a holiday like the 4th of July, approach movement as a way to make memories. Here are a few of my favorites:Go for a family bike ride (ride bikes to the fireworks show so you don't have to worry about parking!)Go for a hikeHave a relay raceGo swimmingPlay a game of baseball with the neighborhood (nothing's more American than baseball!)Set up an obstacle courseHave a water balloon fightGo for a walkCan you imagine the fun memories you would make if you did one or two of the things on this list? My kids are growing up so fast and I want to make sure that I create as many memories with them as I can before they leave my house.Plus, I want to leave my kids with a legacy of movement! We didn't have to go for a run after the 4th of July BBQ because Mom didn't want to gain weight - we moved our bodies because it was fun! We played games and had fun as a family! I want that to be the legacy and memory I leave my kids with, not that exercise was a punishment for “unhealthy” eating.Make mindful choices when you indulgeI don't think it's healthy to go to a 4th of July BBQ and not eat anything because you're trying to be “healthy.” Yes, there are going to be seasons of your life where you're not going to indulge in everything you want to because you're focusing on your health, but those are just seasons, not the norm.An important part of living a healthy life is learning how to eat on every occasion - not just when conditions are ideal - and that includes holidays! The key to making healthy choices on a holiday is to continue being mindful of what you're eating. A lot of people say holiday calories don't count. And you can say that all day, but when you step on the scale the next day, it's going to show you that you're just lying to yourself.Calories always count. That doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't eat some treats on a holiday, but you should be mindful of how much you indulge.I like to choose one meal to indulge in. Most likely, that's going to be dinner for me because we usually have friends over or get together with our family and it's easier to not worry about every morsel of food I eat when I'm focused on being social.Even though I plan to indulge in that one meal, I still make sure that I make smart and healthy decisions the whole day. Before my bigger meal, I make sure to have plenty of lean protein, fruits, veggies and high-fiber carbs so that I can get close to my normal goals. The better choices you make earlier in the day, or outside of your untracked meal, the better you'll feel later!I also practice moderation during my “off” meal. I don't indulge in everything. If I have a bite of something that doesn't live up to my expectation, I stop eating it. If it's not worth the calories, then you don't have to keep eating it, just because you put it on your plate! Save your calories for things you actually enjoy! If there's a lot of good food around, I like to have a small serving of a couple of things, rather than one big serving of just one thing. That way I don't feel like I missed out, but I'm also not eating a full serving of everything and then end up feeling stuffed and bloated. You can have the same mindset with drinking! You absolutely can drink alcohol and lose weight, but you again, have to be mindful of it! If I want to drink at a BBQ or holiday party, then I'll have one drink. Then, I'll switch to mocktails, sparkling water, or soda. That way I still feel like I'm having fun and getting to be part of the social scene, but I don't have to pay the consequences of drinking too much.Don't think of a holiday as a cheat day or a cheat meal. You're not cheating on anything when you choose to have more one off meal or even one off day. You're still making a conscious decision to indulge while sticking to your health goals.Stay hydratedMama, I'm sure you're used to reminding your kiddos to drink water during the summer, but are you drinking enough? If you're spending the 4th of July playing outside, going to parades, rodeos, fireworks and maybe having a few drinks, all while mommin' on a holiday, then you have to make sure you're getting enough water!Adults should drink at least half of their body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink 75 oz of water, to begin with. Add extra water if you're doing any of the following things. You should add 12 oz. of water for every 30 mins of activity or if you're out sitting out in the sun.Add 16 ounces of water with every 12-ounce beer or 4-6 ounces of hard liquor.A good rule of thumb for summer, and the 4th is, if you feel thirsty, drink!Take time to do whatever YOU want.Mama, you run the show every day of the year, take some time this 4th of July to rest, relax and do something that makes you happy! If that's getting up and moving your body like we talked about earlier, great! If it's pulling out a lawn chair and reading a good book, great! When you've taken the time to plan out your meals and you're making healthy choices with your food, then it's ok to not be running around the whole day.Rest is important. I actually have to teach a lot of my clients the importance of a rest day! So many women believe that they have to keep going, keep pushing through but really, your body and might just need a break!Use the 4th of July as an opportunity to take a break from your normal duties and do something that makes you happy! You might be surprised how good you'll feel waking up on the 5th if you've taken time to slow down and enjoy yourself. If you want to learn more about living a healthy life that doesn't cause you to restrict yourself on holidays (or really any day!) then let's talk.
