#329: Can You vs. Should You (Eat Anything In A Calorie Deficit) - Looking Beyond The Technicalities

So we know we need a calorie deficit to lose weight. We also know that you can make any food fit and still lose weight if the calories are correctly controlled. But should you? Just because you can do?That is the question not many ask and one that provides an additional layer of context to a commonly overly simplified area of nutrition. In this episode, I explain the nuance of flexible dieting and making any foods fit, with a consideration for the bigger nutrition picture. DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is for guidance only and is not individualised advice for you! Food Guidelines, MyPlate, and the Search for Certainty | Illuminating Being PodcastIn this episode, we explore a question that sits underneath much of modern nutrition discourse: how do we actually know what to trust when it comes to food? From the food pyramid to MyPlate and evolving dietary guidelines, public nutrition messaging has shifted over time. Yet the deeper tension remains unchanged. In a world shaped by competing nutrition advice, food marketing, and rapidly expanding research, clarity is not always the outcome of more information. This conversation does not attempt to resolve food into a single framework. Instead, it examines the limits of certainty in nutrition science and the reality that healthy eating is shaped by biology, lived experience, family systems, and culture.Topics include dietary guidelines and public health nutrition, intuitive eating, plant-rich whole foods, selective eating in children, and the practical realities of feeding families. The discussion also touches on how food frameworks like MyPlate function at a population level, and why they may not always translate neatly into individual experience. At its core, this episode is about attention. Noticing how food affects the body. Recognizing the influence of information systems. And understanding that guidance and experience must remain in dialogue, not competition. This is a reflective conversation for anyone thinking seriously about nutrition science, food awareness, and the everyday decisions behind how we eat.Listen to explore the space between guidance and lived experience, and what it means to navigate food in a complex world.

In this episode of Eat More Carbs, Jenna, Reilly, and Lilly are tackling the sheer volume of nutrition misinformation that female athletes encounter daily. We are talking about trends and advice currently driving us bananas. From questionable Reddit threads where personal nutrition experience is treated as law, to examining the continued rise of low carb swaps like Egglife pasta, we look at how these trends can derail an athlete's recovery and performance. We discuss the frustration of seeing diet culture rebrand itself as wellness and why these confusing messages make it so difficult for athletes to trust their hunger and fuel their bodies adequately. Our conversation centers on the danger of replacing essential carbohydrates with processed protein alternatives, especially for those working through hypothalamic amenorrhea or low energy availability. We explain why a Reddit thread is rarely the place to find individualized sports nutrition advice and how to spot the red flags in viral nutrition claims. By reacting to these common pitfalls, we aim to simplify your approach to fueling and help you reclaim a sense of peace with your plate. We want you to walk away from this episode feeling empowered to ignore the noise and focus on the science backed fueling strategies that actually support your goals. The Eat More Carbs Podcast is the go-to podcast for the GIRLIES who want to fuel their body properly with easy, fun, and simple nutrition! Can one eat “junk foods” and be ok and if so, how much is ok?This is a very nuanced and contextual topic but let's give you some insightful direction at least. In this episode, I answer the question of whether or not it's okay to eat “junk food” and still get results (as an athlete or in fat loss). DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is for guidance only and is not individualised advice for you! The internet loves to dunk on the Food Pyramid, but the real story of nutrition guidance is stranger, older, and way more practical than a viral meme. We start at the beginning—the Farmer's Bulletin and wartime “Basic Seven”—to show how scarcity, highways, and changing supply shaped what Americans were told to eat. Then we follow the guidance as it morphs into the Basic Four, the 1980s Food Wheel, the grain-heavy Pyramid, and finally the cleaner, more intuitive MyPlate. Along the way we call out the quiet forces behind the posters: industry lobbying, marketing muscle, and the gulf between advice and what families can actually afford. From there, we take a hard look at the headline-grabbing upside-down pyramid packed with steak, butter, and whole milk. It's a masterclass in getting attention, not a tool for putting dinner on the table. We unpack saturated fat limits, why placement matters, and where whole foods shine versus where nuance gets lost. We also spotlight policies that move the needle, like programs that double benefits for fruits and vegetables—real incentives that measurably improve health and stretch budgets. If you care less about internet fights and more about what to cook tonight, we've got you. We talk templates that work on a tight budget—beans and lentils, frozen veg, oats and rice, eggs, canned fish, yogurt—and why simple, repeatable meals beat perfect plans. We even tip our hat to Canada's food rainbow for clarity and balance. Come for the history, stay for the takeaways you can use this week, and tell us which food guide actually helps you eat better.Enjoyed this deep dive? And I reversed my Hashimoto's. I believe every woman with Hashimoto's can feel strong and confident in her body. I help women struggling with Hashimoto's learn how to exercise to lose weight and beat fatigue so they can feel their best and show up for the people that matter the most. My story in a nutshell… Three years ago, after having my first baby, I was chronically sick and didn't feel like myself. I was… exhausted even after sleeping 14 hours a night gaining weight no matter how much I worked out struggling to finish my sentences in chronic pain with full body joint and muscle aches constantly injuring myself when I tried to workout Simply, I was a shadow of myself. Everyone told me having a new baby was “hard” and exhaustion was “normal.” I wasn't present for my new baby and my family was under constant stress because I couldn't function. I could barely get out of bed. Even 12 years as a Doctor of Chiropractic medicine, I had to look past my current knowledge of biomechanical joint and muscle pain to heal my body. The major factor that helped heal my thyroid was working out smarter, not harder, to lose the stubborn weight and beat the fatigue. I tried the recommendations of my doctors which included go for a 20 minute walk, do yoga, pilates, or low impact exercise. But this would make my muscles ache more and my joints feel more loose. Then I tried to go hard to lose the weight but I'd burn myself out, getting sick every couple months. I reclaimed my life and my body, by changing how I trained.

I am delighted to reconnect with my friend and colleague Robb Wolf today. Robb is a former research biochemist and a two-time New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-selling Author of The Paleo Solution and Wired to Eat.  In our conversation today, we examine the pitfalls of diet dogmatism, the lure of oversimplified health narratives, and the effects of Giardia. We unpack the seed oil debate, exploring how the longevity craze might actually be making us sicker, and we highlight the benefits of sun exposure and targeted lab testing. We also touch on the neuroscience of obesity and how food exposure shapes overeating and palate fatigue. As always, my conversation with Robb is insightful, practical, and packed with knowledge, so I know you will find it both inspiring and invaluable. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: The problem with dogmatic diets How Giardia impacts gut health How aggressive screening often creates risks, stress, and costs without improving outcomes The health benefits of adequate sun exposure Why consuming seed oils occasionally is not a huge concern The overwhelming impact of our modern food environment Why palate fatigue could cause overeating How our culture has normalized constant indulgence Some simple lifestyle actions that can yield massive health benefits Connect with Cynthia Thurlow   Follow on X, Instagram & LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website Submit your questions to support@cynthiathurlow.com Connect with Robb Wolf  Robb's Substack
