Send us a textAre seed oils destroying your health… or are they unfairly demonized?Depending on which corner of the internet you land in, seed oils are either the liquid embodiment of evil or a perfectly fine “heart healthy” fat. So, who's right? And more importantly, how do you make sense of all this noise? In this week's Monday Mile, Coach Kevin breaks down the real*story behind seed oils in a way that's simple, clear, and (yes) a little entertaining. You'll learn:What seed oils actually are and how they became so common in our dietsWhy Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids matter - and why the ratio is more important than either on its ownThe surprising role processed foods play in our seed oil overloadWhether you should avoid seed oils completely - or just cut backSmarter swaps you can make in your kitchen for better long-term health Bottom line? No single food is the villain, but the way we overconsume seed oils in processed foods is a problem - especially if you're after strong, healthy aging. Tune in for a balanced perspective that cuts through the fearmongering and helps you make better food choices without losing your mind.
When people think of snake oil, they often think of the snake oil salesman. In the 1800s, people would sell “snake oil” for pain, arthritis, and digestive issues, and developed a bad reputation for peddling products that were fraudulent or didn't actually work. Clark Stanley is one of the most well-known sellers of snake oil for arthritis. The government tested his snake oil, and it was found that it didn't contain any snake oil at all. This gave other natural remedies a bad reputation.Real snake oil was shipped from China, where railroad workers used it for arthritis. It was derived from a specific type of Chinese water snake. Health scams like those of the snake oil salesmen of the past seem to still be going on! Big Pharma has been involved in numerous criminal fraud cases, resulting in 100 billion dollar settlements! Many drugs are considered safe and effective, but are suddenly found to be dangerous. The benefits of drugs are exaggerated, and the side effects are minimized. In some cases, as with vaccines, Big Pharma is not liable for harm or negative side effects. So it seems, Big Pharma is the new snake oil salesman! Real snake oil is one of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA. EPA can change pro-inflammatory factors into anti-inflammatory factors. Snake oil benefits include the following:•Potent anti-inflammatory properties •Natural anti-depressant •Decreases risk of heart attack by 25% •Decreases risk of fibrosis •Increases insulin sensitivity •Decreases risk of autoimmunity •Decreases tumors Snake oil can also be used topically!
In this episode of the Food Junkies Podcast, Dr. Vera Tarman speaks with Bonnie Newlin, registered dietitian nutritionist, Certified LEAP Therapist, founder of Crave Nourishment, and member of the Lipedema Education Group. Bonnie specializes in the nutritional management of lipedema and chronic inflammation. Lipedema is a progressive adipose and connective tissue disorder that primarily impacts women, often misdiagnosed as obesity. Bonnie shares her own story of living with lipedema—including a 170-pound weight loss, delayed diagnosis, and eventual lipidema reduction surgery—and how food addiction and weight cycling complicate early recognition of the condition. Together, Dr. Tarman and Bonnie explore: What lipedema is and how it differs from obesity and lymphedema Early signs, symptoms, and barriers to diagnosis The role of hormonal changes in progression Why ultra-processed foods and sodium worsen lipedema symptoms The connection between lipedema, food addiction, and binge/restrict cycles How anti-inflammatory nutrition and lifestyle strategies can reduce pain, swelling, and disease progression Emerging treatments, including compression therapy, lymphatic drainage, vibration therapy, and lipedema reduction surgery Myths about lipedema and why it's often misunderstood in medical settings Bonnie's vision for DNA-guided nutrition research to better serve this population This episode sheds light on a condition that may affect up to 11% of women yet remains underdiagnosed and misunderstood. If you or someone you know struggles with chronic swelling, painful fat, or unexplained weight changes—especially alongside food addiction—this conversation offers clarity, compassion, and hope.
In this inspiring episode, I'm joined by my friend and member, a dedicated military spouse and mom of four boys, who proves that healing your hormones doesn't require a perfect diagnosis to see real results. After years of following outdated diet rules—eating less, punishing workouts, and ignoring her body's signals—she decided to take a different approach. By nourishing her body, lifting weights, and creating satisfying, hormone-supportive meals for her family, she's lost over 25 pounds and gained so much more: energy, confidence, and a healthy relationship with food. We talk about: How to start your healing journey without waiting for a formal diagnosis The mindset shifts that finally moved her from restriction to empowerment Strategies for feeding a hungry household while staying on track with hormone health Why weight lifting became a key part of her transformation The ripple effect her changes have had on her family and lifestyle Whether you're a busy mom, a military spouse, or just tired of dieting advice that doesn't work, her story will remind you that it's never too late to thrive in your health and feel strong in your own skin. Inflammation has become a nutrition buzzword, often used in extreme or misleading ways. This episode aims to clarify what inflammation is, how it relates to diet and health, and whether specific foods truly provoke inflammatory responses in the body. The episode provides a nuanced, evidence-based look at inflammation and diet. It explains the difference between acute and chronic inflammation, outlines the role of chronic low-grade inflammation in disease, and emphasizes that overall dietary patterns – rather than any single food – are what influence our inflammatory status. Commonly demonized foods (such as sugar, wheat, and dairy) are scrutinized, and the conversation debunks myths about them being uniformly “inflammatory.” In this episode, Danny takes a look at what the scientific evidence actually shows about anti-inflammatory diets. Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
GLP-1's have become a major topic in wellness circles, often discussed by celebrities, influencers, and even your neighbors. However, misinformation and incorrect dosing are prevalent. What most people (even doctors) don't realize is that proper, smaller doses of these compounds (specifically semaglutide) offer remarkable benefits for inflammation, brain health, pain relief, and overall wellness. Dr. Tyna Moore, a naturopathic physician, chiropractor, and pioneer of GLP-1 tiny dosing, reveals the not often spoken of benefits that are game-changers for midlife women's health and wellness. In this episode, Dr. Tyna Moore explores five powerful GLP-1 benefits that go far beyond appetite suppression: their anti-inflammatory effects that calm overactive immune systems, neuroprotective properties that support brain health and reduce cognitive decline risk (including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's), pain-relieving capabilities that help with chronic conditions, cardiovascular protection that supports heart health, and even their ability to modulate addiction and reward pathways. She also explains why proper dosing is crucial for accessing these benefits without severe side effects, how GLP-1 agonists work as part of a comprehensive health strategy, and why these medications might be particularly valuable for women dealing with the inflammatory changes that accompany hormonal shifts. Whether you're struggling with chronic pain, brain fog, autoimmune symptoms, or just want to understand all your options for optimal midlife health, this episode reveals the science behind GLP-1 benefits that could change how you think about these powerful compounds. We talk to neuroscientist Dr. Caroline Ménard, nutrition scientist Dr. Rosa Casas, and exercise physiologist Dr. Grace Rose. This episode does discuss depression and suicide a little bit.
