Welcome back to this week's REPLAY episode of The Business of Wellness! Before we get into some exciting trend forecasting content for 2024 (my favorite kind of content), I thought we'd take a moment to look back at the biggest food, nutrition & wellness trends of 2023. What did I get right? Where did I go awry? Which trends did you see everywhere this year, and which ones of these were a total miss?! Don't be shy….I'd really love to hear your feedback in the form of a review, listeners! Today's episode is a replay of part one of my two episode series on 2023 trend forecasting in food, nutrition & preventative health, which originally aired in December, 2022. This episode specifically deep-dives on three key areas of opportunity for consumer wellness brands. I get into why I think doing each of these three things can help brands, businesses, products, and services to not only survive the forthcoming economic downturn, but actually thrive during a challenging & competitive period. We discuss: What is "wellness" and why is it so difficult to define? Our current healthcare model (& why it's more closely aligned with "sickcare") Trepidation among health professionals to discuss weight in a conversation about preventative health The relationship between food and health (and how this impacts everything else we do in the name of "self-care.") Redefining our current understanding of self-care Plus, three ways to recession-proof a wellness brand, including: Focus on your unique value proposition (intentionality) vs. ideology Provide services and/or products that eliminate barriers to behavior change Provide opportunities for customers to build meaningful connection Thanks for listening to The Business of Wellness with Jaclyn London, MS, RD. __

Healthy food only makes up a fraction of what schools are serving students in canteens and tuck shops. Massey University researchers have been analysing the menu of 133 primary schools across the country. Despite the Ministry of Health implementing Food and Drink Guidelines for Schools in 2020, the study found only 12.8 percent of foods available to students are considered healthy. Lead researcher from Massey University Danika Pillay spoke to Susie Ferguson.
In today's upbeat and eye-opening episode, We're taking a candid look at the "Peter Pan Syndrome," that tendency we have to cling to youth in ways that actually make our health choices anything but youthful. I'll take you back to when I was 22, equating fun with a whole lot of unhealthy habits, and lay bare the biases and misconceptions we often have about what being young, 'edgy,' or 'fun' really means. I'll also dig into the hidden narratives in food marketing—ever notice how processed, unhealthy options get billed as 'party foods,' while anything healthy gets tagged as 'boring' or 'old'? Through stories like a client of mine who was scared of losing her connection with her boyfriend by eating healthier, I'll unfold the irrational ties we make between overeating, overdrinking, and this idea of defying aging. But here's the real meat of today's talk—it's all about empowerment and self-realization. I'm inviting you to take a hard look at how you want to think about eating well and caring for your body. Let's break free from those narratives that aren't doing us any favors and redefine what fun and youthfulness really mean—in terms of energy, vitality, and feeling amazing. In this episode, I aim for you to realize that taking control of your health isn't about resigning to getting old; it's about truly living. It's about embracing every age with wisdom and celebrating each stage of life with a joy and fulfillment that's genuinely ageless. Chapter Summaries: Redefining Aging, Fun, and Responsibility (0:00:04) Exploring the Peter Pan syndrome, I uncover how unhealthy habits are marketed as fun and how to redefine health, joy and vitality. Embracing Aging With Grace and Vitality (0:10:26) Question beliefs around aging, health, and vitality; embrace aging with grace and wisdom; live life to fullest. Continuing the Conversation (0:21:06) Challenge societal expectations and create a life of joy, health and possibilities without conforming. "Embrace aging as a journey of wisdom and vitality, and challenge the narrative that equates youthfulness with unhealthy habits. Rediscover joy, energy, and the vibrant life that awaits you." - Elizabeth Sherman Get full show notes and more information here: https://elizabethsherman.com/podcast/147

Learn the power of reframing goals and shifting your focus to the process, rather than just the end result. Gain insights into planning for long-term goals and developing a more thoughtful approach to achieving them. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction to the Episode Melina introduces the purpose of refreshing this episode and mentions the upcoming conversation with Vishal George, who references Ayelet's work. 00:02:04 - Setting Goals and Motivation Listeners are encouraged to think about their goals, especially related to money and financial stability. Melina teases the upcoming conversation with Ayelet Fishbach and encourages listeners to keep their goals in mind during the discussion. 00:02:53 - Interview with Ayelet Fishbach Ayelet Fishbach discusses her background in motivation science and goal setting. She explains how she became interested in studying motivation and self-control and discusses her early research on anticipating temptation. The importance of planning and thinking about obstacles is highlighted. 00:09:19 - Overcoming Fantasies and Intuition Ayelet emphasizes the importance of thinking beyond fantasies and focusing on potential obstacles. She discusses how fantasies are less effective than considering the challenges that may arise. The importance of questioning intuition and challenging common beliefs is also mentioned. 00:11:18 - Intuition and Counterintuitive Findings Ayelet discusses the importance of questioning intuition and presents examples of counterintuitive findings. She highlights the need to challenge common beliefs and assumptions, such as opposites attract or consistent reinforcement for behavior. 00:16:50 - The Power of Goals, The conversation begins by discussing the power of setting goals and the inspiration they provide. The example of Mount Everest is used to highlight the allure and intrinsic motivation behind achieving a specific goal. 00:19:33 - Choosing the Right Goal, The discussion emphasizes the importance of choosing the right goal, as not all goals are in our best interest. The example of climbers on Mount Everest who persist despite dangerous conditions is used to illustrate the potential pitfalls of misguided goals. 00:22:20 - Increasing Goal Adherence, The conversation addresses the issue of people giving up on their New Year's resolutions. The key factor in goal adherence is intrinsically motivating resolutions that provide immediate pleasure or growth. The importance of enjoying the path towards the goal is emphasized. 00:24:35 - Setting Pleasurable Goals, The discussion highlights the significance of setting goals that are pleasurable to pursue. Examples include enjoying healthier foods, finding fun ways to exercise, and creating rewarding work tasks. Emphasis is placed on the need to find pleasure in the process rather than solely focusing on the end result. 00:29:10 - Mistakes in Goal Setting, The conversation explores the common mistake of setting resolutions based on an idealized version of oneself. The concept of hyperbolic time discounting is mentioned as a factor that hinders long-term commitment. The speaker advises setting goals based on one's present self, acknowledging personal limitations, and planning accordingly. 00:34:52 - The Problem with Avoidance Goals, Avoidance goals, such as not being a couch potato or not eating junk food, are less likely to be successful because they bring to mind the very thing we are trying to avoid. Approach goals, on the other hand, like catching Pokemon, are more exciting and motivating. 00:36:10 - Why Avoidance Goals Don't Work, Avoidance goals may seem urgent in the short term, but they are not effective for long-term success. Instead of focusing on what not to do, it is more productive to think about what we should do. For example, setting a goal to have healthy snacks instead of avoiding junk food. 00:37:07 - Reframing Avoidance Goals, Reframing avoidance goals involves shifting the focus from what we should not do to what we should do. For example, instead of setting a goal to stop eating junk food, we can set a goal to eat healthy snacks. This reframing makes the goal more positive and motivating. 00:39:24 - Changing Perceptions of Healthy Food, Many people have a negative perception of healthy food, associating it with being tasteless. However, this perception can be changed by framing healthy food in a more positive and tasty way. When healthy food is seen as delicious, people are more likely to choose and enjoy it. 00:51:22 - Reaching Goals and Making Little Changes, Melina discusses the importance of regularly taking action towards goals instead of only focusing on the long term. Little changes and choices made today can have a significant impact in the future, such as planning for retirement. Being thoughtful and proactive is key. 00:52:03 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. What stuck with you while listening to the episode? What are you going to try? On today's episode, I'm excited to talk to Robby Sansom and Taylor Collins about the nuances of regeneratively raised meat and how it can reverse climate change, support better health for those who eat it, and provide natural and caring conditions for the animals it involves. Robby Sansom is Co-Founder & CEO at Force of Nature, a regeneratively sourced meat company based in Austin, TX. Previously, as CFO/COO at EPIC, Robby spent much of the last decade studying regenerative agriculture at ranches all over the world. Force of Nature works in partnership with land stewards, ranchers, and farmers committed to creating a positive return on the planet. Robby is also a land steward at ROAM Ranch, where he owns regeneratively managed bison.Taylor Collins is the Chief Bison Wrangler and a Co-founder of Force of Nature. In 2017, Taylor and his family purchased ROAM Ranch, a 900-acre multi-species regenerative ecosystem.
