With a racing career beginning at the youthful age of 40, David Darsow has been a staple in the Flat Track vet classes here in District 23 ARMCA. For the past 22 years, he has competed weekend after weekend, and has even stepped up to Open A and Open Pro classes for the occasional round. Two notable races for David were the 2019 Cedar Lake Arena and Mississippi Thunder rounds of D23 ARMCA Flat Track. Coming away with wins in front of the fans gave him feelings that can't be replicated in any other way. In addition to these two races, David notes how impactful a season ending injury was on his racing career. Not because of the injury itself, but because he was able to fully recover and win a championship the following season.Inspired by Ricky Graham and Bubba Shobert, David continues to compete in District 23 ARMCA Flat Track events, and enjoys riding anything with two wheels. Street, track, and trail motorcycles, road, mountain, and BMX bicycles, you name it, David rides it. Though these activities help him stay in shape, they also help him to leave his worries of the world behind. Two wheels give David a sense of freedom four cannot.Over the years, older riders have given David endless advice. Now that he sees himself in this position, he has a few takeaways that he'd like to share with other D23 ARMCA members. First, “in order to finish first, you have to finish. You can't win the race on the first lap, but you certainly can lose it.” Second, “if it's not fun, why do it?” And finally, though competitiveness is deeply ingrained in our society, there are bigger reasons to compete than just winning. Cameryn Quast is the 2021 Quad MX 90cc Semi-Stock Champion! He began riding at home in 2018 and became interested in racing quite quickly. Both he and his father knew nothing about racing at the time, and found District 23 ARMCA in the spring of 2019. Cameryn went on to win the 50cc Semi-Stock championship in 2020, and continued his winning ways in 2021. He enjoys the camaraderie among his competitors, and the respect they have for each other on and off the track. This is what keeps him coming back to D23 ARMCA, and his goals for 2022 include clinching another championship in the 90cc Semi-Stock class. Inspired by Pro ATVMX racer Joel Hetrick, Cameryn strives to compete in ATVMX at the national level.Racing has given Cameryn true pride in his work. Where traditional sports like football and wrestling fell short, Cameryn feels the thrill and excitement of racing give him confidence for his hard work. Taking to advice he's been given, he has focused on his starts to improve his race craft. And though he feels excitement on the track, a moment of silence on the starting gate helps Cameryn to focus on the most important part of his race. When the racing is finished, Cameryn enjoys his dad's famous brisket street tacos and garage time with dad in preparation for the next race. In addition to honing in his start skills, Cameryn has been working hard to ride smart and within his means. Something he advises other D23 ARMCA members to focus on to help keep them safe on the track. This article was prepared by an independent contractor and may not be the views of the board of directors of District 23 ARMCA or any of their sponsors or affiliates.
Courtney Gregory is the 2021 MN AMA District 23 ARMCA Women's Enduro Champion! Though she saw great success in her Enduro season in 2021, she also enjoys racing Hare Scrambles in the Sportsman B and Women's C classes. Her humble beginnings started with Andrew Hook's (one of our Flat Track Reps on the District 23 ARMCA Board) PW50, where she and her sister first got their feet wet. After spending a couple summers gardening to earn their bikes, they finally received their own motorcycles. By mid-childhood, Courtney was racing in District 23 ARMCA and has been ever since.Courtney's greatest racing accomplishment is when she finished her first National Enduro in Marquette, MI on a 1986 Honda XR200. With her goals set on competing at more national events in 2022, Courtney is excited to focus on riding and training now that she's finished college. Inspired by the other women racing in D23 ARMCA, and strongly supported by her travel buddy, also known as dad, there's no limit to where Courtney can take her off-road racing career. Especially if a race day is topped off with a cold slice of watermelon. In addition to riding and racing, Courtney enjoys being in the outdoors. She loves running, mountain biking, and snow skiing, and even coaches kids in skiing. Motorcycling has given Courtney a tight-knit second family, and she encourages other women “to not rush the process of moving up to bigger bikes.” Practicing on smaller bikes gives women “the opportunity to work on solidifying technical riding skills.” The best advice Courtney has ever received is to “always keep it fun, never take yourself too seriously, and always be riding a motorcycle whenever you can,” something we can all take to heart. This article was prepared by an independent contractor and may not be the views of the board of directors of District 23 ARMCA or any of their sponsors or affiliates.

In 2009, Gage Krech took his XR50 to a field across the street from his house for his first ride on a motorcycle. He was hooked, and burned through tanks and tanks of gas in this field until the following year when he became a District 23 ARMCA member. This is when Gage competed in his first motocross race and has been ever since! In 2022, he will be competing in the 250 and Open B motocross classes, and has goals of returning to his competitive ways after a severe knee injury he incurred in 2021. In addition to regaining his speed, strength, and overall confidence, he strives to return to the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Motocross National in the B classes.Gage's greatest racing accomplishment came in 2019 when he won the North Central Regional in the 250 C class. He then went on to compete at Loretta's where he finished 14th overall. He describes this experience as “a weight taken off his shoulders, knowing that he finally made it.” He believes this experience helped him to learn more about the race, and will help him prepare for future trips to The Ranch. Gage has spent most weekends of his life at a motocross track with his family, which he he believes has brought them closer together even as he's grown older. Their motivation and support inspire him to do his best, and help him through the low periods that come with racing. Gage continues to race in District 23 ARMCA because the places and the people feel like home to him. Once advised to go easy on himself, he encourages other D23 ARMCA members to “make this time count. Get out there, have some fun, and enjoy the ride.”This article was prepared by an independent contractor and may not be the views of the board of directors of District 23 ARMCA or any of their sponsors or affiliates.

Ryan Pettis is a Hare Scrambler at heart, but he enjoys all forms of off-road riding, including Enduro, in District 23 ARMCA. The whole story began with Ryan's two older brothers. They had dirt bikes, and of course, Ryan wanted one too. His dad said “yes,” but with one condition: he had to be able to ride a bicycle first. Ryan vividly remembers learning how to bicycle, especially the first time he rode on his own. Once he realized he was meeting his dad's requirement, he turned his bike around and got back to his dad to ask, “can I get a dirt bike now?” Ryan was soon cruising around on his PW50 and has been racing ever since.Ryan just finished his successful 2021 season in 250 C Hare Scrambles, where he won the class and the C overall for the season. Over the winter, he will be training to improve his speed and his overall fitness. In 2022, he will be competing in the 250 B class, where he has goals of being in the top 3. Ryan continues to race in District 23 ARMCA because of the amazing community where everyone has your back.Ryan attributes a lot of his success to his friend and mentor, Logan Kittock. Inspired by his speed, humbleness, and dedication, Ryan loves learning from him and even has him on speed dial to ask him for advice. Though Logan has given Ryan many words of advice, the tips on riding technique have stuck with him, in addition to his advice to “ride with faster people.” Ryan would like to pass these words on to other District 23 ARMCA members, as well as advice to truly listen to those that inspire you.In addition to riding and racing, Ryan loves to snowmobile, snowboard, work at his interior painting business, and spend time with his family and girlfriend. He even enjoys a bowl of Chicken Alfredo before his races. Though Ryan enjoys the sweeter things in life, motorcycling has had the biggest impact. It has taught him some of the most important lessons about building strong character, like how to be kind, how to be a good role model for kids, and how to be persistent when life knocks you down. Though he has taken these lessons for himself, Ryan encourages others to see the life lessons in their own riding experiences. This article was prepared by an independent contractor and may not be the views of the board of directors of District 23 ARMCA or any of their sponsors or affiliates.
