This week's Hot Topics: A diesel emissions case delay in Wyoming may signal shifting federal enforcement. Plus: a rare fatal bear attack in Arkansas, a $1.4B poaching crisis, and California ranchers struggle against surging wolf depredation. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Federal Diesel 'Delete' Prosecutions, Arkansas Bear Tragedy, and the Hidden Cost of Poaching and California's Wolf Crisis Wyoming Diesel 'Delete' Case Delay Signals Possible Shift in Federal Prosecution According to the Cowboy State Daily, The federal case against Levi Krech, a Gillette man accused of tampering with diesel truck emissions systems, has been delayed, sparking hopes that the federal government might be backing off from aggressively pursuing "delete" cases. Krech faces felony charges under the Clean Air Act, but his defense attorney believes the delay could signal a shift in the enforcement approach under the new administration. Krech was initially scheduled to plead guilty on September 11, but a request for more time to review changes in laws and regulations led to a rescheduled hearing. Krech, who owns Unique Performance, a diesel shop in Gillette, had been involved in the "delete" tuning business—removing emissions systems from diesel trucks, a practice that was once considered legal in Wyoming. His case follows a broader national trend where small business owners in the diesel tuning industry are facing increasing scrutiny. Krech's defense attorney argues that federal prosecutions targeting individuals like him, who cannot afford the lengthy legal battles, are unfair and disproportionate, especially as emissions systems can often be costly to repair. Krech's case also stands out due to his personal history. Once a troubled teenager involved in theft, Krech turned his life around after completing a rigorous probation program, eventually starting his own business. His story reflects the potential for individuals to rehabilitate, raising questions about whether the federal government should continue treating diesel emissions tampering as a criminal act rather than a civil issue. In the broader context, some lawmakers and environmental advocates argue that "deletes" contribute to significant air pollution, which harms p ublic health. However, others contend that federal actions against small business owners in industries like diesel tuning are overreaching and fail to consider the practical realities of running a small business. With the case delay and discussions in Congress over the fairness of federal enforcement, Krech and others in the industry are holding out hope that a more balanced approach will prevail. On September 3, the elderly man was working on his tractor by the side of a road in the Mulberry Mountain area when he was mauled by the bear. His son witnessed the attack and was able to intervene, helping to free his father from the animal. Despite being airlifted to a hospital and receiving intensive care, the man's injuries were too severe, and he passed away on September 14. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officials confirmed the tragic news, noting that the bear involved was likely a yearling weighing 70 to 80 pounds. The bear was swiftly located and euthanized by authorities. Following the incident, wildlife officials conducted tests on the bear, confirming it tested negative for rabies and distemper. This attack is considered “unheard of” by local authorities, with officials stating they hadn't encountered a black bear attacking a human in Arkansas in over 25 years. This rare and unprovoked attack has shaken the local community, with the family remembering the man as a beloved father and grandfather who was doing what he loved—working on his land—when the tragic event occurred. Despite the high financial and ecological toll, more than 95% of wildlife poaching incidents go undetected. The study, which aimed to quantify poaching's scope, found that poachers face minimal penalties, making it an unappealing deterrent. This lack of enforcement contributes to a massive loss of wildlife, hunting license revenue, and conservation funds. The research highlights that poaching is a significant contributor to the financial loss of big-game animals, such as whitetail deer and elk. For example, the restitution cost for a trophy elk can reach up to $30,000. With poaching detection rates as low as 4%, millions of dollars in fines and replacement costs go uncollected. Additionally, this unreported poaching undermines public trust in wildlife management and depletes resources intended for conservation efforts. Researchers used criminological methods to analyze poaching motivations, ranging from trophy hunting to financial gain, and concluded that increasing detection rates and harsher penalties are key strategies to reduce poaching. The study also recommends raising awareness among ethical hunters to help combat the stigma and promote the message that poaching harms everyone, not just wildlife enthusiasts. This year alone, Paul Roen, a Sierra County Supervisor and ranch manager, has seen wolves kill at least 37 head of cattle on his ranch. Roen describes it as an “absolute massacre,” and county sheriff Mike Fisher agrees, calling the losses “unprecedented” for Sierra Valley. But the damage doesn't end with numbers — it's the emotional toll of losing livestock in such a traumatic way that no compensation check can replace. In total, wolves have been confirmed to have killed 73 cattle in the region as of September 2025, but Roen suspects the real number is higher, with some carcasses left unrecognizable. While the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) works to deter the wolves using non-lethal methods, ranchers like Roen argue these efforts are falling short. The wolves are relentless, killing animals of all sizes, maiming livestock, and often leaving behind nothing but remnants of carcasses. To make matters worse, the protocols for proving wolf kills are strict, leaving many depredations uncounted. Ranchers have also expressed frustration with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's strategy, which has involved placing food at wolf dens, a tactic Roen believes is ineffective. Ranchers aren't just asking for compensation; they want solutions. The California Cattlemen's Association (CCA) is calling for the delisting of the gray wolf, citing the rapid increase in wolf numbers and the devastating effects on local cattle producers. They point to bipartisan support for this action, both during the Obama and Trump administrations. With wolves now present in areas like Sierra Valley in large packs, ranchers and county officials are demanding more action. Roen's plea is simple: “We are not going to co-habitate with these animals. They have to be removed.” For ranchers, the question is no longer just about numbers or compensation. It's about whether California will step in to protect the livelihoods of those who provide food for the state—and the nation. Send us a text The lineup of the project known as Colorado Junction has changed lineups a couple of times over the years, with musicians leaving to focus on their personal lives or pursue other career opportunities. In 2025, the band will be performing more frequently in a new lineup, which longtime member Troy Yanel refers to as “Colorado Junction 3.0.” That lineup consists of Yanel on guitar, Chris Spurlock on mandolin, David Weisbart on bass, Bobby Krech on fiddle, and all four providing vocals. All four of these musicians love playing together, and in fact, they've been playing together for years before “Colorado Junction 3.0.” Much like Yanel answered a Craigslist ad in Nashville, Spurlock answered a Craigslist ad that resulted in him meeting Yanel and Krech for the first time. They played in a group called Mighty Pleasin, with a fourth member, Quinn McKay, on bass, and Krech ended up bringing Spurlock into another group of his, Strung High String Band. Spurlock and Krech still play in that group today, and in fact, the two are now not only close friends and musical partners but also direct neighbors, living in houses right next to each other. After the COVID-19 quarantine period, Weisbart answered another Craiglist ad from Yanel, so now, the four will revitalize Colorado Junction in this current lineup. Ultimately, the group hopes that audiences will continue supporting live, local music, that their shows will encourage them to do so, and that they're able to spread joy to the people who come to see their performances.

While more than 300 million people around the world face acute food insecurity, tobacco continues to be grown in 124 countries, diverting land and resources away from food crops – even in places where people are starving.Ahead of World No Tobacco Day on Wednesday 31 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released new findings about tobacco's disastrous health impact on development in low and middle-income countries.WHO's Director for Health Promotion, Dr. Rüdiger Krech, also busts the myth of tobacco as a lucrative crop, before explaining how the UN system helps farmers embrace alternatives that are better for their health and food security. Here he is, talking to UN News's Dominika Tomaszewska-Mortimer in Geneva.

In 2009, Gage Krech took his XR50 to a field across the street from his house for his first ride on a motorcycle. He was hooked, and burned through tanks and tanks of gas in this field until the following year when he became a District 23 ARMCA member. This is when Gage competed in his first motocross race and has been ever since! In 2022, he will be competing in the 250 and Open B motocross classes, and has goals of returning to his competitive ways after a severe knee injury he incurred in 2021. In addition to regaining his speed, strength, and overall confidence, he strives to return to the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Motocross National in the B classes.Gage's greatest racing accomplishment came in 2019 when he won the North Central Regional in the 250 C class. He then went on to compete at Loretta's where he finished 14th overall. He describes this experience as “a weight taken off his shoulders, knowing that he finally made it.” He believes this experience helped him to learn more about the race, and will help him prepare for future trips to The Ranch. Gage has spent most weekends of his life at a motocross track with his family, which he he believes has brought them closer together even as he's grown older. Their motivation and support inspire him to do his best, and help him through the low periods that come with racing. Gage continues to race in District 23 ARMCA because the places and the people feel like home to him. Once advised to go easy on himself, he encourages other D23 ARMCA members to “make this time count. Get out there, have some fun, and enjoy the ride.”This article was prepared by an independent contractor and may not be the views of the board of directors of District 23 ARMCA or any of their sponsors or affiliates.

As the coronavirus leaves many people housebound, the World Health Organisation says people need to get more active, insisting that up to 5 million deaths worldwide could be avoided each year if people would run, walk and simply move more. The U.N. health agency, launching updated guidelines on physical activity and its first advice on sedentary behaviour, is pointing to figures that one in four adults — and four in five adolescents — don't get enough physical activity, a situation that's complicated by the Covid-19 crisis that has shut up many people indoors. It recommends at least 2 1/2 hours of "moderate to vigorous aerobic activity" for adults per week, and an hour per day for kids and teens. A lack of physical activity leads to extra health care costs of $54 billion per year, plus another $14 billion in lost productivity, WHO said. The findings come as the Geneva-based agency released an update on "WHO Guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour" — building upon, revising and expanding recommendations in the previous guidelines published a decade ago."Physical activity of any type and any duration can improve health and well-being, but more is always better," said Dr. Ruediger Krech, WHO's director of health promotion. "If you must spend a lot of time sitting still, whether at work or school, you should do more physical activity to counter the harmful effects of sedentary behaviour.""The old adage — prevention is better than cure — really applies here," Krech said. "WHO urges everyone to continue to stay active through the COVID-19 pandemic. If we do not remain active, we run the risk of creating another pandemic of ill-health as a result of sedentary behaviour."Dr. Fiona Bull, who heads the physical activity unit at WHO, said the guidelines offer advice on "sedentary behaviour" for the first time. She added that experts previously believed physical activity should be done in blocks of at least 10 minutes. But the increasing use of fitness-monitoring devices has generated new science showing that it's really most important to get 150 minutes at least per week."In fact, that 10-minute minimum is not so important and every move counts," she said. "It's the total amount we all achieve: Reaching 150 (minutes) and extending."Bull said only 78 countries, based on WHO's most recent survey, have national guidelines on physical activity. She encouraged nations to leverage the new guidelines "as the basis for fast-tracking their policy development."Regular physical activity is important to help prevent heart disease, diabetes and cancer while also reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, and "boosting brain health," WHO said. People aged over 65 should focus on balance, coordination and muscle strength to help prevent falls, it said.

The "Eastern Way" of psychology offers a profoundly different paradigm than Western psychology. Join me as a talk with Gregg Krech, one of the leading authorities on Japanese Psychology in North America, about this difference. Using the Buddhist concept of "skillful means", Japanese psychology offers methods to master the skills of acceptance, attention, co-existing with unpleasant feelings, and self-reflection.
