There are discoveries that change a region's prospectivity forever. The Challenger Gold Mine in the Gawler Craton is one of them. In this episode of Coffee with Samso, I sat down with David Edgecombe, the geologist who was instrumental in the discovery of the Challenger Gold Deposit in outback South Australia. David is not simply a man who happened to drill a good hole. He is a geologist's geologist — one who understood the rocks, trusted the science, and applied a methodology that was, at the time, genuinely groundbreaking in this part of the world. At 1.2 million ounces of gold, Challenger remains an enigma in the Gawler Craton. There is nothing comparable within a radius of several hundred kilometres. And yet, as David explains, the discovery almost didn't happen. A single calcrete sample — one out of more than 3,600 collected — came back at 180 parts per billion gold. Move that sample 200 metres in either direction, and the number drops below 20 ppb. The story of Challenger is as much about luck as it is about the brilliance of the exploration strategy. What makes this conversation particularly compelling is that David takes us back to the very beginning — the regional sampling programs, the calcrete geochemistry methodology that Dominion Mining pioneered in South Australia, the moment that anomalous result came through on the fax machine late one evening, and the drilling program that confirmed one of the more significant gold discoveries in Australian exploration history. This is a conversation about discovery methodology, about what works and what doesn't, about the value of good science over noise, and about what the next generation of explorers should be looking for in one of Australia's most underexplored terrains. For the past few months, neurosurgeons at hospitals in Florida, Connecticut and New York have been preparing for a wildly experimental operation designed to treat Alzheimer's disease, the dementia that leads to devastating memory loss. The surgery, which they've been practicing on cadavers, aims to clear the drainage pathways to the brain. This could help patients' own lymphatic systems flush out toxins that scientists believe are the hallmarks of the disease, which affects 7 million people in the U.S. alone. To do so, they're turning to the smallest surgical robotic instruments in the world that can hold tiny needles the size of eyelashes, with scissors and dilators roughly the width of a human hair. The lymph vessels in the neck that surgeons would operate on for the Alzheimer's procedure can be as little as 0.2 millimeters in diameter, the equivalent thickness of two sheets of paper. “It's like taking a couple of strands of your hair and tying them together with little bitty sutures,” says Mark Toland, CEO of Jacksonville, Florida-based startup MMI, which makes the microrobots. They aim to perform the first of these microrobotic surgeries on five people in March. While a very early-stage clinical study, it builds off reports from some 5,000 experimental surgeries performed in China and other Asian countries over the past five years that help the lymphatic system clear out build-up in the brain. They've shown remarkable, if largely anecdotal, results. Surgeons were not only able to slow the disease's progression — they took patients with moderate Alzheimer's back to a more mild stage of the disease, Toland says. By Amy Feldman, Senior Editor. Episode 145: What You Need to Know About Severe Work Injuries in California If you suffered a severe work injury in California, the severity of your injury may determine how much compensation and long-term benefits you receive. Serious injuries unlock benefits that minor injuries never will. Not all work injuries are treated the same. In California workers' compensation, serious and catastrophic injuries unlock benefits that minor injuries never will, including higher payouts, extended disability benefits, and even lifetime pensions. In this episode, hosts Carmen Ramirez and Bilal Kassem explain: What legally qualifies as a serious work injury How permanent disability ratings are calculated Why a higher disability percentage = significantly more compensation When injured workers qualify for life pensions How catastrophic injury classifications unlock extended benefits Common mistakes that cause workers to undervalue severe injury claims Key Insights: Serious injuries are those that result in a permanent disability rating once the worker reaches maximum medical improvement (MMI). A minor injury may result in a 1–5% rating, while severe injuries (like spinal damage) can reach 50% or more, drastically increasing claim value. Workers rated 70–99% permanently disabled may qualify for life pension benefits, with payments adjusted for cost of living. Catastrophic injuries (such as amputations or severe burns) can extend temporary disability benefits up to 240 weeks, far beyond the standard 104 weeks. Why does this matter? If you don't understand how severity affects your claim, you risk: Accepting low settlement offers Losing access to long-term benefits Missing out on lifetime financial support If you've had a serious work injury in California, knowing your rights can make a big difference. It helps to get the right guidance so your injury is properly classified and you get the benefits you're entitled to. This episode is sponsored by Pacific Workers, The Lawyers for Injured Workers, the trusted workers' compensation law firm in Northern California. 2026-01-21 | UPDATES #110 | Russia is burning through its gold — is this a sign that Putin's war economy is getting desperate? The easy money is running out – from hydrocarbons, minerals, from the sovereign wealth fund and from strategic reserves. Now Putin must dig deeper to fuel his war mania and lust for conquest – appropriation of businesses, default on financial commitments to the poor and marginalised, and sell off Russia's strategic assets – such as its gold reserves. The Kremlin has started to pawn the crown jewels of its economy, and that signal not only desperation, but the beginning of the end for Putin's vicious regime. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: Reuters — oil & gas budget revenue expected to drop 46% y/y in January (Jan 19, 2026). Casey's inspiring journey began after complaining about financial struggles to her mother, who had a positive experience with MMI in the past. This led Casey to make a call to MMI, and ultimately paying off $28,000 in debt in four years. She highlights that while a debt management plan is a powerful tool, the process requires personal commitment, sacrifice, and a shift in mindset. She and her wife cut back on eating out, opting for home-cooked meals and budget-friendly dates. They also made conscious choices, like opting for generic brands and finding deals on clothing, to save money. This willingness to sacrifice allowed them to put extra funds towards their debt. Casey recalls a childhood experience with a "Chore Chart" that taught her the value of money. MMI provided her the practical skills to budget effectively in adulthood. MMI's resources, including courses and financial advisors, helped Casey gain a clear picture of her finances and how to manage them long-term. What happens when the work you love, your life's devotion, collides with public scrutiny, betrayal, and cancel culture? In this intimate conversation, I sit down with my closest collaborator and soul sister in this movement, Yolande Norris-Clark. Together, we unpack what it's been like to build groundbreaking programs for women, like our 10-month mentorship, The MatriBirth Mentor Institute (MMI), while simultaneously weathering the storm of online harassment, public misrepresentation, and the many initiations that come with success. This is a raw and honest reflection on navigating backlash, strengthening boundaries, and staying anchored in your values while walking a path most don't understand. We speak to the complex dance of sisterhood and collaboration, and how our friendship has been both tested and deepened by the work we continue to stand for. This episode is for the women who know they're here to disrupt the norm, build what's never been built before, and stay the course even when darkness tries to push back.Inside this episode, we explore:What hate groups taught us about privacy, protection, and spiritual hygieneWhy we chose to rebrand the name of MMI to something that feels more alignedHow scrutiny and slander can catalyze profound personal evolution and maturityThe beauty and necessity of sisterhood that doesn't flinch under fireWhy being rooted in purpose is the only sustainable strategy for enduring cancel cultureWhat it really takes to keep showing up when you know you're being watched in bad faithWe created The MatriBirth Mentor Institute because we know the sovereign birth-work path isn't easy—but it's necessary. MMI is the container for women called to lead in truth, in integrity, and in devotion. This episode is a glimpse into the lived experience of harvesting the fruits of “mob mentality” and doing the inner work to become “uncancellable”.Timestamps:[00:00] Introduction[04:22] Fear of visibility and public backlash in sovereign birth work[12:54] Processing betrayal and loss of support[22:28] Birth as a political and spiritual battleground[42:05] Finding freedom and accountability in the face of public criticism[54:59] Growing into leadership and re-evaluating boundaries[01:08:32] Building a lasting movement for sovereign birth and mentorshipResources Mentioned:Matriarch Rising Festival | WebsiteThe Lighthouse | WebsiteRadical Birth Keeper School | WebsiteThe MatriBirth Mentor Institute | WebsiteIf you want to connect further with Yolande, give her a follow on Instagram.Find more from Emilee on Instagram, YouTube and the Free Birth Society website.Disclaimer: Free Birth Society, LLC of North Carolina shares personal and educational stories and experiences related to freebirth and holistic care. The Suite Spot travels to Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, to visit the historic Mission Resort + Club as the next stop in the Road Trip series. This property is renowned for its prestigious golf courses, natural environment, and rich Florida history dating back to the early 1900s. Tune in to hear from General Manager Cindy Staley and Director of Agronomy Danny Parks as these two join the Suite Spot. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check in, and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree. If you're watching us on YouTube, you can tell we are not in our Suite Spot podcast studio, but instead, right in our backyard at the Mission Resort + Club. It's such a privilege to be here. I just got off a tour. It was fantastic. We're gonna talk all about it today. And now we're joined here by Cindy Staley, General Manager of the Mission Resort + Club. Cindy, thank you so much for joining me on the Suite Spot. Cindy Staley: Well, thank you for being here. We appreciate you coming out to the resort. Ryan Embree: It's an incredible property you have here. Before we talk a little bit more about it, get in depth about its amenities, the guest experience here, talk to us a little bit about your hospitality journey and how you ended up here at the Mission Resort + Club. Cindy Staley: How far back do you want me to go? Just kidding. I actually always wanted to be in the hospitality industry, even in, believe it or not, high school. I wanted to be a chef. Went to college for it. Really just saw what the hotel arena and resort arena could bring to me. You're never bored. Yeah. There's always something new or something different to do. So I worked my way up. I've been in the central Florida area since 2005 working more in the Orlando market. This opportunity came up roughly three years ago. And that's when the prior owner purchased or sold the property and sold it to MMI Hospitality Group. With that, I was hired before they came to the hotel, and they actually took it over in December of 2022. So we've been through this transition of the prior owner to the new owner, both families and have been through the transition of what MMI has accomplished in the last two and a half, almost three years. Ryan Embree: It's incredible, and we're gonna talk about that today. But getting back to that point, a historic property like this with such a rich history, that's not something that just can hand over to something. It requires a lot of care, and I think that's a real testament to MMI hospitality that they're entrusted in this, this really, you know, jewel that has been around for, for so long. It's really, really cool to see. Talk to us a little bit about, we, we heard about the golf side. Obviously that in itself is, makes it a destination, but you know, as general manager, you're obviously managing over the guests that you host here. Talk to us a little bit about the property, the guest experience, and some of the incredible amenities outside of golf. Cindy Staley: Absolutely. MMI had had owned it for I think, 60 plus years, the King and Prince Resort, which is on St. Simon's Island in, in Georgia. So they're good at managing historical properties. Mission Resort, it has been here since 1964 when the prior owner purchased it. And they really recreated the property from the golf course that was built in 1917, which is El Campeon. And then throughout the years, created the resort building by building, creating 176 guestrooms. We also have suites and villas included in that. They built three restaurants very good reputation restaurants from La Hacienda, the Breakfast Restaurant, La Margarita is our lunch and dinner restaurant. And then the Golf Clubhouse, which is just going through a name change called the Grove House. And it was formally Knickers Golf Clubhouse. Ryan Embree:
