From a young age, Tim Frick knew that he wanted to make instruments. As a teenager, he began building basses for himself. He'd eventually take a class with famed archtop guitarmaker Tom Ribbecke, work at Gary Brawer's repair shop in San Francisco, and then spend years alongside lutherie legend Frank Ford at Gryphon Guitars in Palo Alto, California. These days, Frick is based in Portland, Oregon, where he repairs guitars and builds his own archtop guitar creations. For episode 75 of the podcast, Tim tells us about his journey, why he uses mostly hand tools, and his thoughts on voicing archtops. We also talk Japanese hand tools and much more. https://timfrickguitars.com/ https://www.instagram.com/timfrickguitars/ Luthier on Luthier is hosted by Michael Bashkin of Bashkin Guitars and brought to you by the Fretboard Journal. This episode is sponsored by Acoustic Coffee Company (check out their new Gruhn Guitars blend), Stringjoy Strings, and Dream Guitars.
In this special episode, we are in Amsterdam for one of the shows of the year: Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum. As an unprecedented 28 of the 37 surviving Vermeer paintings are gathered in the Dutch capital, Ben Luke talks to several people involved in the project: Gregor Weber, one of the exhibition's curators, tells us about his new biography that reveals the depth of influence of the Jesuits and Catholicism on the artist. In the exhibition itself, we talk to Pieter Roelofs, Weber's co-curator; Ige Verslype, a conservator who led an extensive research project on Vermeer paintings in the Rijksmuseum, Mauritshuis and Frick collections; and Taco Dibbits, the Rijksmuseum's director. Plus, we bump into the artist Alvaro Barrington in the exhibition and he tells us what he makes of Vermeer as an artist working today. In this episode's Work of the Week, we explore a debate around the attribution of a painting: Betsy Wieseman, Curator and Head of the Department of Northern European Paintings at the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington DC, discusses Girl with a Flute (around 1669-75). Wieseman and her NGA colleagues now regard the painting as a work by Vermeer's studio, even though it appears in the Rijksmuseum show as an authentic work by the master.Vermeer, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, until 4 June. Gregor Weber, Johannes Vermeer: Faith, Light, Reflection, Rijksmuseum, €25 (pb) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hello, and welcome to Beauty and the Biz where we talk about the business and marketing side of plastic surgery, and how to charge a lot / give a lot. I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of Your Aesthetic Practice – What your patients are saying, as well as consultant to plastic surgeons, to get them more patients and more profits. Now, today's episode is called "Charge a Lot, Give a Lot — with Ryan Neinstein, MD". How do you charge up to $75K for a tummy tuck? That's what I asked this week's Beauty and the Biz Podcast (link) guest Dr. Ryan Neinstein. He's a plastic surgeon in private practice in NYC, in a gorgeous 6K square foot office above the iconic Bergdorf Goodman store with views overlooking Central Park. Dr. Neinstein's answer….”We charge a lot. We give a lot.” He went on to explain his hyper focus on the patient experience and aftercare that his patients gladly pay extra for. He walks his talk by employing 30 full-time staff who assist him in surgery, offer concierge services, drop off garments, pick up prescriptions, visit post-op patients and anything else that makes patients feel special and cared for. His entire team thinks “relational” vs “transactional” and he gave lots of great tips for developing a practice culture that is fun, inspiring and profitable. We also talked about HOW: His marketing efforts keep 3 plastic surgeons busy What he focuses on that allows him to charge more How he “rules but not reigns” Dr. Neinstein shared his pearls and philosophy with good take-a-ways. Visit Dr. Neinstein's Website P.S. If you are NOT getting the consultation conversions you want, there's something your coordinator doesn't know. I'll train her to be a converting rock-star within weeks.

You can begin to feel a bit alone after receiving your dementia diagnosis. You may feel a loss of purpose and your ability to stay connected to others around you becomes more challenging as the disease progresses. Our guest this week is a social worker with Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center (RADC) who talks to us about the realities of feeling loneliness. Expert Susan Frick helps untangle not only the feelings as a person living with the disease, but also the caregiver who is supporting their loved one. She paints us a picture of what this may feel like and how caregivers and community members can help alleviate some of these feelings. She also encourages people to talk about their situation and reduce stigma around the disease.

Anders Caldwell has writing in his blood, so he decides to pursue his story-telling ways through a podcast about a tiny island off the coast of Maryland called Frick Island. The 94 residents on the island only come and go via Bob Dan's boat, and there is no cell tower or internet, so Anders can take the liberty of sharing all of the islanders' quirks with the outside world without fear of reprisal. Nothing changes on Frick Island, not the inedibly sweet cake they're famous for or its lack of alcohol. The folks who live here support each other and even pretend to see dead ex-residents when the need arises. Close knit doesn't begin to describe their enmeshment. What will happen as the island finally gets a cell tower? Will outside influence tear them apart or draw them together? Hop onto Bob Dan's boat and see for yourself! Today, we are drinking two non-alcoholic wines that would fit right in on Frick Island and one that is only 10.5% alcohol. The first non-alcoholic wine is a bubbly rose from Gruvi, that reads more like a jolly rancher or a sweetart than a wine, and the second is a Mosel Riesling from Leitz, redolent of acidic apple. The lower alcohol sip is COS Nero d'Avola, a dry Sicilian wine with notes of red cherry and tomato leaf that pairs well with beef stew, lentils, mushrooms or barbecue. See for yourself whether you miss the alcohol. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/readingbetweenthewines/support

(Founders #283)[5:00] Here's a starter pack of essentials for Day 1 defense: customer obsession, a skeptical view of proxies, the eager adoption of external trends, and high-velocity decision making. —Jeff Bezos's Shareholder Letters (Founders #282)[7:00] In less than half a century the United States had been transformed―from a largely agrarian and underdeveloped federation of competing interests, to a relatively cohesive economic juggernaut. The age of the Founding Fathers was over. The Age of the Titans had begun.[12:00] By 1863 Carnegie was earning more than $45,000 a year from this and all his other investments, compared with a mere $2,400 from his railroad salary. Yet he understood that it was the contacts he made and the information he derived from his association with the railroad that made everything else possible.[13:00] More control. Less costs. More profit.[15:00] Technology is just a better way to do something: As a result of the process for transforming iron to steel that bore his name (Bessemer), a quantity of steel that might formerly have taken as long as two weeks to produce could now be made in fifteen minutes.[17:00] Carnegie starts his company during a financial panic. The best time to expand is when no one else dares to take the risk.[20:00] Already the best but still wants to do better: Even his key employees were not spared Carnegie's heavy-handed management style. To almost every positive report Carnegie's response was "Good, but let us do better."[21:00] Cut the prices, scoop the market, watch the costs, and the profits will take care of themselves.[21:00] Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire by James Wallace and Jim Erickson (Founders #140)[22:00] He could make steel more efficiently than any of them.[24:00] Henry Clay Frick: The Life of the Perfect Capitalist by Quentin Skrabec Jr. (Founders #75)[24:00] Like Rockefeller, Henry Clay Frick used a lot of borrowed money to get his start in the coke business. There was a line in one of Rockefeller's biographies where it said “he was the greatest borrower I've ever seen.”[26:00] Frick knew his business down to the ground.[26:00] LIke Carnegie, Frick expands his business during an economic panic. Frick, who would later recall this as one of the most grueling times in his life, proved as undaunted in the face of adversity as Carnegie had been.[34:00] Carneige was accustomed to obedience from his subordinates, but if he expected unquestioned subservience from Henry Frick, he had gravely miscalculated.[36:00] Frick was no puppet, but rather a man willing to take considerable risks in defense of his principles.[37:00] Frick had ambition, a singleness of purpose, and a lack of self—doubt that even Carneige envied.[38:00] Carnegie would repeat the mantra time and again: profits and prices were cyclical, subject to any number of transient forces of the marketplace. Costs, however, could be strictly controlled, and in Carnegie's view, any savings achieved in the costs of goods were permanent.[39:00] On this issue the two men were of one mind. Frick had made his way in coke by the same reckoning that Carnegie had in rail and steel: if you knew your costs down to the penny, you were always on firm ground.[39:00] Frick had always understood how essential new technologies were in driving costs down. Cost control became nearly an obsession.[47:00] [Frick was shot] Only after he was finished with his day's work did Frick permit himself to be carried from the office to an ambulance.[49:00] You must not allow anything to discourage you in the least. Even if things do not go well for some time to come, or even if they should get much worse. Just keep at it, doing the best you can. Do not allow the fact that you are not getting along as well as you would like to lead you to put yourself in a compromising position.[1:03:00] Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, and the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. (Founders #83)[1:04:00] J.P. Morgan understood the folly of a long-term battle with the Carnegie Company, a firm that controlled its own sources of raw materials, transport, and manufacture, and that was far more deeply capitalized than his or any other of the upstarts. They might stay in the game for a while, and they might put a dent in Carnegie's armor, but in the end, Carnegie would run them into the ground, every one. Robert Frick, corporate economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, says he thinks there is at least a 50 percent chance of a recession, but says that the whole idea that the Federal Reserve can "engineer a soft landing is a fairy tale," noting that a perfect ending to today's economic troubles isn't impossible, but "if it happens, it's just going to happen because it happened," not because the Fed actions caused it. Frick notes "a mild recession could be a tonic to a lot of what ails the economy right now." Also on the show, Gretchen Lam, senior portfolio manager at Octagon Credit Investors talks about how rising interest rates are helping the credit market now -- minimizing losses compared to most fixed-income investments -- and how loans have performed during periods of rate hikes in the past; Anna Mabry of Calvert Impact Capital discusses "community investment notes," direct investments that individuals can buy for as little as $50 that function as a fixed-income alternative while also trying to make a positive impact on communities, and Chuck answer's a listener's question about allowances, when to start them and how to structure them.

Join us for Episode 34, where we share a pilsner with Scott and Darryl, co-founders of Steel Hands Brewing, to discuss a 120-billion-dollar industry – selling beer. They teach us how to grow new local markets to meet the rising demand of a fast-paced industry with a constantly changing pallet. They're not only masters of brewing—they're masters of strategic expansion, predicting customer demand and national trends while balancing all the moving parts of running a production brewery across multiple states. It's been a challenging journey, made successful by foresight and wise business practices, but most of all, passion. They've got great advice to share about creating a unique product that can break into tough, insular retail spaces. If you've got a dream product you want to bring to life (or if you just love beer) make sure to listen in.

Hier setzt Dominic Wuillemin an. Our 1/3 generator pal, Nic Frick, is BACK! Today, we chatted all about the mind center and the role it plays in your chart. Nic has a defined mind center, while I have mine undefined – so we compared how it works for each of us in our lives. THE GOODS How the defined mind center operates vs. how the undefined mind does The gifts of having either kind of mind center The challenges of either one, too Why I had beef with defined mind centers for a long time (not anymore!) What it feels like for each of us when we disagree with someone's opinion Defined mind centers - how to hold your opinion without thinking it has to be the “only way” Plus, 3am calls about the downfall of Capitalism, why Nic gave her husband a black eye, and John Mayer (of course). Pittsburgh's East End has some of the city's largest parks, historic buildings and has long been home to trailblazers in city government. Trigger warning: In this episode we will be discussing abortion and sharing a story of a newborn baby's death. Please care for your wellbeing In today's episode Gervase is talking with newfound activist and a Charleston force for abortion rights, Sarah Frick. Sarah shares her personal and painful story of losing her first baby, Grace, at three days old and the medical complication that led to her making the choice to abort her next two fetuses before finally birthing the three healthy children she has now. It's messy and inspiring, as all the best stories are, which is why we hope this conversation empowers you to go share yours with people open to listening. In this episode we dive into: The moment Sarah got the call and knew she would need to abort her baby Why her story highlights that safe abortions need to be legal Sarah's (not great) experience speaking in front of lawmakers in the Senate How to be pro–life and pro-Jesus and the intersection of religion and politics What it's like to be a newfound activist How to protect our energy while fighting the good fight How to navigate the awkward spaces as women and mothers where we find differences of beliefs How and why the old white men making all these new laws and decisions about women's bodies are clearly acting out of fear We know conversations about abortion aren't always “comfortable,” but we believe compassionate conversations are the only things with the power to change the lens through which we see complex issues. If you would like to take action to support Reject the Total Abortion Ban- Call your Senator immediately and tell them to vote NO H 5399 before the bill is debated on the Senate floor on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 For more information Click here. More about Sarah Frick: Sarah Frick has been in the yoga and fitness industry for 16 years. After opening and operating two successful power yoga studios for 10 years in Charleston, South Carolina, Sarah sold both at the peak of their success to rebrand not only her fitness concept but herself. She wanted more than just a fitness experience. Sarah's life had changed. She had changed. She had grown. She had experienced loss. She had experienced grief. And, ultimately, she had experienced grace. Losing her first child, Grace,in early infancy was a pivotal point in Sarah's life. Losing Grace dropped Sarah into her body, into her heart, and into her life to truly see what was important and what mattered. From that, The Works Method started to bud and to take life. This practice she created—The Works Method—is extremely physical. She inspires people to think, If I can work through some of this shit on my mat, imagine what I can do in my own life. Sarah currently lives in a little beach town with her three wild children and equally wild husband. On this week's podcast, we talk about the value of time and how important it is to show up in alignment for the things that are truly worth your while. What are your non-negotiables in life? Nic explains how dancing and chocolate help get her energy in line. There's a lot of gold in this meandering conversation.
