Cameryn Quast is the 2021 Quad MX 90cc Semi-Stock Champion! He began riding at home in 2018 and became interested in racing quite quickly. Both he and his father knew nothing about racing at the time, and found District 23 ARMCA in the spring of 2019. Cameryn went on to win the 50cc Semi-Stock championship in 2020, and continued his winning ways in 2021. He enjoys the camaraderie among his competitors, and the respect they have for each other on and off the track. This is what keeps him coming back to D23 ARMCA, and his goals for 2022 include clinching another championship in the 90cc Semi-Stock class. Inspired by Pro ATVMX racer Joel Hetrick, Cameryn strives to compete in ATVMX at the national level.Racing has given Cameryn true pride in his work. Where traditional sports like football and wrestling fell short, Cameryn feels the thrill and excitement of racing give him confidence for his hard work. Taking to advice he's been given, he has focused on his starts to improve his race craft. And though he feels excitement on the track, a moment of silence on the starting gate helps Cameryn to focus on the most important part of his race. When the racing is finished, Cameryn enjoys his dad's famous brisket street tacos and garage time with dad in preparation for the next race. In addition to honing in his start skills, Cameryn has been working hard to ride smart and within his means. Something he advises other D23 ARMCA members to focus on to help keep them safe on the track. This article was prepared by an independent contractor and may not be the views of the board of directors of District 23 ARMCA or any of their sponsors or affiliates.

Cameryn: Oh, it’s good to be here. Thank you! Gem: So, it’ll be really great if you just tell us a bit more about you and how you identify. Cameryn: I am a playwright and a performer and a facilitator of smut. That’s kind of my professional designation I guess. I identify as an activist in a lot of ways around sex and fat and sex work. And phew, I’m just a middle-aged lady that didn’t really get the memo on how to be middle-aged sometimes is how I’m feeling like, yeah. Gem: And so, there’s lots to explore there. I’m just wondering how you first got into activism. Cameryn: I first got into activism when I was 16 actually. This was back in the mid-80s, so 1986. Nuclear war was kind of the constant looming thing. I don’t know how it was for other places, but certainly in the US, there was this constant sort of—it just hung over everything right? I started a peace activist group at my high school in a very conservative town. And that was probably also the time when I started shedding my introvert tendencies and found myself becoming an extrovert in support of causes that I felt strongly about. Before that, I was very shy and definitely still the same geek that you see before you today. But I was really shy and not wanting to put myself forward. And nuclear disarmament was something I felt so strongly about that I just made myself go out and do things. And I think that I definitely had become that extrovert in real life. But most of the causes that I’m loud and brassy about are… they’re causes. They’re not just me. It’s things that I feel strongly about. So, that all started when I was 16. It’s gone from nuclear disarmament to queer rights. I came of age as a little baby queer in the late ‘90s when Queer Nation was big on the scene in North America. And so, I moved through that into fat activism as well in the mid-90s in the San...
