The Berlin Airlift was a significant episode in the beginnings of the Cold War, with American, British, and French aircrews flying hundreds of daily cargo flights to deliver essential supplies into a West Berlin blockaded by the Soviet Union.Despite impossible odds, Berlin was sustained by air for 15 months from June 1948, with more than one third of flights being handled from Gatow Airport in the British sector of the beleaguered city. But what made the operation a success? What was the importance of ATC, and how did technical advances help lay the foundations for modern high intensity operations? We mark the 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift with this very special episode of Altitude. NATS Heathrow Air Traffic Controller and aviation history lover, Adam Spink, speaks to retired Squadron Leader Garry Garrets, a man who flew on the Berlin Airlift as part of a celebrated 30-year RAF career. Hear the behind the scenes story of how the West Berlin was kept alive thanks to the most monumental airlift in history. You can also watch an on demand version of the livestream on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@NatsAero
Altitude is a monthly podcast from NATS.On 25 February 1920, the UK Air Ministry gave approval for the construction of a new building at London Croydon Airport, to be ‘erected 15 feet above ground level' and with ‘large windows to be placed on all four walls'. This building was to be known as the ‘Aerodrome Control Tower' and at a stroke coined both the term that has remained synonymous with Air Traffic Control for the past 100 years and a design that remains instantly recognisable. Host Ady Dolan (Heathrow Air Traffic controller) is joined by Adam Spink (air traffic controller and history enthusiast) and Ian Walker (Chair of Historic Croydon Airport Trust) for an exploration of what life was like for those early air traffic innovators, and the foundations they laid that we still rely on today to keep the skies safe.Enjoy the show and find out more at nats.aero/altitude(Originally broadcast in Feb 2021)

We chatted about some of the mechanics of air traffic control at Heathrow and the unique ways of optimizing throughput. A few days later we met again on the tower of Fairford during RIAT 2019 and chatted about the specifics of ATC'ing during an airshow.

Earlier this year I visited the London Air Ambulance, a charity organization that flies two MD-902 helicopters over the UK's capital. I chatted with their chief pilot Neil Jeffers about the flying and some of the medical aspects. My recorder then joined Neil on a short flight to their hangar at RAF Northolt. There, we met Adam Spink, a NATS air traffic controller at Heathrow, and the three of us chatted about the ATC perspective of flying helicopters (sometimes) in Heathrows's approach.

We have recently been listening to Adam Spink describe the sight of a Boeing 777 crash on the threshold of runway 27L at Heathrow airport whilst he was the Air Traffic supervisor in the tower. On this tale we look at the technical reasons for why BA38 lost power on its approach. Images under Creative Commons licence with thanks to the NTSB.

Observing a large wide body airliner crash is, mercifully, a rare occurrence but to have one crash onto your airfield when working as the Air Traffic Supervisor in the control tower puts it in a completely different category of amazing! This is Adams story of the day it happened to him at London's Heathrow airport. Images under Creative Commons licence with thanks to Marc-Antony Payne, Aero Icarus.
