Storying our Futures is a new podcast series looking at the climate crisis in east Africa and the ways in which storytelling can help to spread information to the local population. Through the eyes of two Kenyan storytellers, Mara and John, we travel with them through South Sudan and northern Kenya to see how the crisis is affecting local communities. "Storying our Futures: climate resilience through indigenous knowledge" is a UK/East Africa collaborative project bringing traditional oral storytellers together with East African pastoralist communities, scientific meteorologists, journalists, and indigenous traditional climate forecasters known as Rainmakers, to amplify and explore the many ways that storytelling can support system change. Chris Gregory from Alternative Stories undertook the sound design and editing work for this podcast series. The podcast series is a joint venture between Adverse Camber, a UK based arts production company, ICPAC, a specialised organisation fostering climate services and knowledge to enhance community resilience in Africa, The British Council, Cath Heinemeyer of York St John University and storyteller / activist Hannah McDowall. Phil Okwedy is currently on tour with the production company Adverse Camber with his new show The Gods Are All Here. I say 'new' but this show is a lock-down baby that was a couple of years in creation. I worked with Phil on the show and this is the story about how it grew from a glint in his eye to a funded touring production. This is another fascinating insight into the moment that someone knows that an uncomfortable shift into a creative lifestyle cannot be put off any longer.
On this episode my guest is Phil Owedy, a Welsh-Nigerian storyteller based in Pembrokeshire. He draws deeply on his dual heritage and multiple cultures in order to find the contemporary in the traditional. Phil regularly performs in storytelling clubs and has featured at Beyond the Border and Aberystwyth Storytelling Festivals, as well as at Kea Festival in Greece and Fabula Festival in Sweden. I met Phil at Beyond the Border this summer where he delivered the premier of his brilliant new show, The Gods are All Here. In this episode, we take about Phil's experiences and approach to storytelling, and we hear a telling from The Gods are All here.Learn more about Phil's work at:https://www.philokwedystoryteller.co.ukStay up to date with Phil's The Gods are All Here tour with Adverse Camber at:https://www.adversecamber.orgGet access to every House of Legends episode and patron-only worksheets by becoming a patron at:https://www.patreon.com/houseoflegendsStudy with me at the Roundhouse Storytelling School:https://www.roundhouseschool.comLearn about Myth Singers, my storytelling coaching program, at:www.houseoflegends.me/story-coachingGet my books, Scottish Myths & Legends, The Shattering Sea and Finn & The Fianna, at Amazon US:https://www.amazon.com/s?k=daniel+allison&crid=3LFU9R8PFUBP1&sprefix=daiel+all%C3%AD%2Caps%2C217&ref=nb_sb_ss_sc_1_10Amazon UK:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Daniel-Allison/e/B081PNRL92/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1Amazon Canada:https://www.amazon.ca/s?i=digital-text&rh=p_27%3ADaniel+Allison&s=relevancerank&text=Daniel+Allison&ref=dp_byline_sr_ebooks_1Get my FREE ebook Silverborn at:https://www.houseoflegends.me/landing-pageJoin us on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/houseoflegendspodcastMusic by Kate Young https://www.kateyoungmusic.com
A conversation with Exeter based storyteller Katy Cawkwell who delved into the Mabinogi for her Festival at the Edge Commission in 2003 with her story of Rhiannon. You can order the CD of Rhiannon, as well as other stories on the shop page on her site. We talked in Bristol just before she had to go and prepare for the show Women Who Gave No F**ks with a stellar line-up of women storytellers at the Tobacco Factory in Bristol. The video below is from a storytelling tour Katy did with the production compant Adverse Camber. Our conversation which ranged far and wide and covered the following…The influence of Eric Maddern and Hugh Lupton’s courses at Tŷ Newydd The illustrations of Margaret JonesUnderstanding Annwfn - the Welsh OtherworldW J Gruffydd’s study of RhiannonThe challenges of finding the narrative line of Mabinogi storiesThe inspiration of the Welsh landscape, particularly Carn Ingli in Pembrokeshire.
I feel incredibly lucky and priveledged to have worked with producer Naomi Wilds on two Mabinogi inspired shows Hunting the Giant’s Daughter, and Dreaming the Night Field which tour with the production company Adverse Camber, a groundbreaking company that specialises in taking high quality storytelling performances, often with music as a central component, on tour nationwide and internationally. She is also the Artisitc Director of Beyond the Border International Storytelling Festival. I was really looking forward to this conversation and it did not disappoint, as you will hear…Naomi with singer, Lynne DenmanThis discussion ranged widely over the performance of material in the Mabinogion including…How the translation and invention of contemporary tellings amplify and compliment the manuscript versionsThe richness of experience that audiences have of listening to different tellings of stories they already knowThe bodily presence of certain story characters in the tellingNaming, summoning and magicThe interweaving of recognisable character and landscape worlds with the OtherworldThe cinematic skills of the storytellerRelaxing on tour in Cornwall
Naomi turned the tables on me in this extra and started asking me questions! I wasn't expecting this and did my best to talk about...Landscape and the MabinogiDeep listening and embodimentInhabiting landscape and slowing downCreative CommunityStorytelling as film
Here are my responses to questions from Jenny White of the Western Mail prior to a tour of Dreaming the Night Field (aka the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi) with the storytelling production company Adverse Camber.
House of Legends is back! Our guest this week is Michael Harvey. Michael Harvey is an internationally performing storyteller and a recipient of the prestigious Creative Wales award. Recently he has worked with production company Adverse Camber on Dreaming The Night Field, a piece based on the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogion, which toured Australia earlier this year.Michael was kind enough to share both an exclusive preview of his forthcoming show Taliesin, and to share a recording of Branwen, his retelling of the Second Branch of the Mabinogion. Both were created and performed in collaboration with Pauline Down.Learn more about Michael, get exclusive downloads and follow him on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at www.michaelharvey.org. Adverse Camber’s El Kano returns to Spannered with a malevolent mix up of metal, hardcore, grunge, distortion, throaty bellowing, deranged jabbering, hissing, clunking, and messy digital contortions — with a heap of megalomaniacal ranting from Superman's archfoe thrown in for good measure. Hold a chicken in the air, stick a deckchair up your nose and crank your amp to eleven — because we've another white-hot selection for you from the one and only El Kano of London's Adverse Camber collective. This man's DJ mixes are always bang on point, and this delightful spread of grimey electronica and twitchy dubstep is no exception. If you missed the mix he recorded specially for the site last year, head here and fill your lugholes — and should you be in need of more, drag your arse over to his page on the Adverse Camber site. Being a bit of a Photoshop wizard, he's concocted some cool artwork for the mix too. Enjoy! Tracklisting: Ben Frost — Bleeding the Sacred Heart (Inventing Zero Records) Shackleton feat. El Kano is the graphic design lynchpin of the Adverse Camber collective, a motley bunch of South London dwellers who, despite putting on events with scary names such as 'The Night of Awesome Power', will always take the time to make you a nice cup of tea (though you may have to nip down the shop to get biscuits). He used to be called Kano, but couldn't be bothered beefing with the numerous other Kanos laying claim to the name, so now he's El Kano, which is cooler anyway. His DJ mixes are consistently badass, and he's put this one together especially for Spannered. Tracklisting: Spac Hand Luke – Dynocock (Rephlex) Ghislain Poirier & Mr Lee G – Dem Nah Like Me (Remix) (Shockout) Andy Page – Bisted & Twitter (Noodles Institute of Technology) Milanese – Caramel Cognac (Planet Mu) Mr Oizo – Inside The Kidney Machine (Family Affair) Fünkstörung – Punk Motherfucker (Studio !K7) Neil Landstrumm – Master Assasin (Seed Records) Pope Thermador – Selassie on the Wye (Unreleased) Menta feat.
