A conversation with Exeter based storyteller Katy Cawkwell who delved into the Mabinogi for her Festival at the Edge Commission in 2003 with her story of Rhiannon. Guto Dafis is a storyteller and musician . You can find out more about his music here and his storytelling here.Guto talks about the reasons why he is a great fan of the 3rd Branch of the Mabinogi. Structure. The relation to the 1st and 2nd branches and the Mabinogi and the challenges of getting that information into a live telling of the story so that the audience understand the backstory without suffering from information overload. Guto is fascinated by the character of Manawydan who, after being involved in a long a bloody war, now refuses to indulge in bloodshed. It is mysterious story with the disappearance of people, domestic animals and buildings how and the story tells how the surviving four people move from subsistence hunting and gathering to the use of domesticated animals and finally farming.Our conversation ranged far and wide and including…SurvivalFamilyRelation to other branches of the Mabinogi How to contextualize the story without information overloadIt is through his patience and endurance that the main character of the story, Manawydan, survives the various trials he goes through, even when the others urge him to use violence. Peter Stevenson has been a major catalyst in the revival of creative interest in the Mabinogi over the last few years, particularly with the two Mabinogi based festivals he organised in Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Y Mabinogi in 2015 and Y Bumed Gainc in 2017. It wasn’t just the artwork, storytelling and music he curated but the people as well. Visual artists, academics, storytellers, storylovers and musicians mixed, mingled and laughed in a great bubbling cauldron of contemporary creativity.Peter StevensonAs you can imagine I was really keen to have a chat with him about what the Mabinogi meant to him and we met in his studio, which he shares with other artists, in a former billiard hall that is, literally, behind a secret door in the centre of Aberystwyth. In this bonus Cath talks about the effort and graft of making these stories live again. She sees it as challenging and rewarding work and, for her, primarily a process with images. This work takes time and effort and is a re-oralisation putting these tales back in the imagination and hearts of the people, and making them real once more by telling them.

The ashen face of Death turns his gaze upon our hero! In the last episode, Pwyll had gone hunting in the Woods of Glyn Cuch and had been beaten to the kill by a stranger pack comprising even stranger dogs. Having decided that the kill was rightfully his, he had driven off the other pack and set his own dogs upon the prey. It was at that moment that a stranger, the Shadowed Hunter, has appeared and was even now turning his dread gaze upon Pwyll. The area of the Wales that Pwyll rules is called Dyfed, and at the estimated time of the writing of the First Branch (during the Medieval period). There is some debate as to the area of the original seven cantrefs, and Wiki provides us not only with a revised version but also names the seven areas. This is the area as it was known in the 7th Century and although the tales were not written down until the early medieval period, there is much evidence - linguistic and political - to suggest that the events recounted in the Mabingion, based on real events and/or mythology, took place at this time. Pwyll, the Prince of Dyfed, goes hunting with unexpected results! We start with the First Branch, which tells the tale of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed and his encounter with a strange other-worldy being. She plays keyboard, flute, tin whistles, and sings. McWiden began her musical journey at the age of 9. From there, her father intruduced her to Celtic music. What makes Annie even more exceptional is the fact that she was born blind. While it has made things difficult as an artist, she's worked hard to excel in the field. She sings Gaelic and English traditional songs from both Ireland and Scotland.  This song is called "She's Your Granny!" and we read out the English version in the AppExtra. For those without the App, you can find lyrics on this lyrics site. It's interesting to note that the word they translate as Granny is 'cailleach', which also means widow, old woman, crone, elder and so on and is of particular interest as we looked at the Celtic Hag Goddess in SP15 - Samhain 2009. Having not being officially celebrated in hundreds of years the festival is to return, rising from the ashes of the Bealtaine name as Festival of the Fires. It promises to be an event unlike anything ever witnessed in modern times - an iconic national celebration to truly ignite the summer. Created through the alchemy of ceremony, heritage, music, theatre, literature, arts, crafts, poetry, holistic health and sustainability.  Festival of the Fires will feature the collective talents of hundreds of participants drawn from all over Ireland and the world, gathering at the exact centre-point of Ireland to celebrate the onset of summer. One of the ceremonial highlights of the festival will be the lighting of a national fire, ignited first on the summit of Uisneach and then carried to hilltops in every one of Ireland's 32 counties. It’s surrounded by a large fallen stone wall, and inside you can still see the remains of the roundhouses. On a beautiful day it is incredibly peaceful, but on a typical Dartmoor day, with the wind and the rain, it must have been a harsh place to live. "I sat with my guitar inside the remains of one of the roundhouses and just began to play on the guitar – looking around, breathing in the history of the place, imagining it full of life. What kind of people lived there. A Raven called overhead, and I felt I could see torchlight on the Tors either side of me. Voices of the Ancestors singing. The Land singing. And the melody of the guitar began to take shape. Saga of Manannan, Part 3 and end of the Irish Mythological Cycle This is the third and final part in the Saga of Manannan which contains two stories. The first, the Tale of Laogaire, tells of a visit of a great warrior to the Realm of the Undying who given the chance refuses to return to Erin. The second tale, the Tale of Tadg and the Three Duns or Castles tells the tale of the voyage of Tadg amongst Manannan's Islands and his encounter with the three great Halls in the Many-Coloured Land. This is also the last episode in the Irish Mythological Cycle and the tale of Tadg rounds off the tale by returning our vision back to Four Islands in the Otherworld, perhaps the very same islands from which the Tuatha De Danaan came from to settle the land of Erin. Of course, the place for me of greatest interest is Ireland where many Celts landed. I have included a photo I took in N. Have you ever wondered who your ancestors were? How did they live? How did they die? Most of us do. Genealogy is a huge business. Curiosity about our bloodlines, our past, makes us want to go back as far as possible. But, genealogy can only go back as far as there are written records. She is the archaeologist who is on the search for a vision. Jahna has come to her and lead her to discoveries. In The Fox, you will follow the lives of Jahna and Lovern, two people who lived in what is now Scotland, during the time of the invading Romans. The Romans threatened Jahna and Lovern, their clan and most importantly, the life of their child. They struggled to find a way to stop the coming invasion and in doing so, left traces of their lives. Aine is working to rebuild her career and is led by instinct, or a vision (or is it a ghost?) to a hilltop in Scotland. I have such strong feelings about the earth and our environment that I am using one thing I know to help spread the word about our need to re-balance our connection to our planet earth. My hope is that hearing this music might inspire some people to become more active in healing ourselves and our planet. Earth Changes was years in the making. I have been singing about for our Mother Earth since the mid- eighties. After a decade of touring and performing, I have spent most of my last 10 years building and helping form a nature-based landed intentional community on 620 acres in Southern Ohio called Wisteria. Here, I have connected deeper to my family and the land. In the last few years as the consciousness about global warming has risen, I felt inspired to create music again. Recently, I finished my new CD entitled Earth Changes. I mainly want this music to inspire people. I am giving away songs (free downloads) and CDs to help raise awareness. I am hoping that this music will help spread the word about the dangers of Global Warming and the need to protect our precious planet.
