In this episode of On Human Rights, we speak with Yalda Bari, a human rights advocate and expert in women's economic empowerment from Afghanistan. Yalda holds a Master's in International Economics from the Berlin School of Economics and Law and brings over seven years of experience with organisations such as GIZ, ILO, and USAID, where she worked to support Afghan women's access to the job market and build women-led businesses. She is also the founder of Bari Search Path, a company dedicated to empowering Afghan women through employment support and training. As a fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, Yalda is conducting research on the challenges faced by women-led businesses inside Afghanistan under the current political regime. Her work aims to document women's on-the-ground experiences and develop policy recommendations that can sustain and expand opportunities for financial independence in a deeply restrictive environment. “Businesses [are] an area of hope... they can still do activities from home. We need to address the challenges they're facing and support them to make the best out of this little opportunity.” In this conversation, Yalda shares insights from her research, the resilience of Afghan women, and the importance of listening to voices that are often left out of international discussions.
More Berlin School goodness from Erwin Broers. There's not much I can say about this mix, other than being totally psyched for it, so I'll let Erwin give you the lowdown. "This mix is an overview of some of the interesting Berlin School Electronic releases of the current calendar year. There's a wide variety of styles, ranging from minimal and retro to loungy/chilled and bombastic/cinematic. Actually, this selection covers the whole spectrum of electronic music between ambient and synth pop. So maybe the label "Berlin School" is not adequate anymore. But hey what's in a name! In any case, unless you're a hard core ambient fan, you will certainly discover something to your liking. Check the links below and support the artists!" Thanks, Erwin, for another great Berlin School set. Cheers! I have continued my recent bingeing of berlin-school electronic music. Devouring old and new music. So I was very excited when guest mixer Erwin Broers reached with a new berlin-school mix. Woo hoo! It's all new music, some of Erwin's favorites from 2024. I was familiar with about half of the artists some it was great to discover new music. I'll let Erwin tell you about the mix: "I was inspired by LLM end of the year mixes on ambient and jazz. I came up with the idea of doing something similar for the Berlin School subgenre. So I checked a few blogs and searched specialized web shops for the most interesting releases of 2024. The result is a near-2hr foray with lots of different styles and atmospheres, ranging from dark to uplifting, retro analog to modern digital, occasionally with a touch of electric guitar and percussions, but almost always with typical layers of sequencers and soundscapes. The influence of the pioneers of the genre, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, is still very much alive in some tracks, almost 50 years after their prime. Filtercafe and Sequentia Legenda obviously draw from that heritage. Most listeners will not like all the tracks, but it is a good introduction to what is being created in the contemporary Berlin School." Thanks for another great electronic mix. Look for another mix from Erwin coming next month. At the beginning of September when I posted my "Sequencer City" mix, I said I'd been on a berlin school bender. Well, now three months later I'm still on that sequencer synth kick. At the end of October the analog synth itch was scratched by a stellar guest mix from Erwin Broers called "Capturing The Voice Of A Galaxy." It featured tracks from the Klaus Schulz label, "Innovative Communications. Now we have have a follow up mix from Erwin called "Back to the Roots of Berlin School." Oh man, this is some good stuff! Erwin tells me that "there's a whole sub-category of "Berlin School" out there called "Retro Berlin School". In the mid 1990's "Berlin School" was revived by nostalgic electronic artists who benefited from technological innovations to make the iconic analog synths such as the Mellotron, the ARP 2600 and the big Moog Modular more playable. The result was a huge resurgence of mid 1970's style Berlin School EM which was dubbed "retro" to mark the difference with the classics such as Tangerine Dream's Stratosfear, Klaus Schulze's Timewind and Ashra's New Age Of Earth." I hope my current obsession with this genre continues because I am loving every minute of it. Thanks for another great mix, Erwin. Cheers! Have you ever felt frustrated by the narrow, rigid ways we're encouraged to think about mental health and experiences considered ‘madness'? Whether you are a person with mental health experiences and feel discouraged by the lack of options or support, a family member or clinician concerned by the way people are treated, a scholar who wants to think outside the box, or an activist combatting discrimination, you may be excited to hear about a field of study. In this very special episode, Dr. Alisha Ali, Dr. Bradley Lewis, and I discuss the emerging field of Mad Studies and the way it challenges conventional mental health narratives. IDHA is hosting an online event December 8th from 12-6pm EST for those who want to dive into this field, get tickets here: https://www.idha-nyc.org/mad-studies-symposium In this episode we discuss: what is mad studies and how is it different from anti-psychiatry and critical psychiatry/psychology? our cultural unquestioning reverence for science and how it deters important scholarship how specialization in academia can lead to reductive research and scholarship The power of language to shape how we think about madness and what's ‘normal' connections between activism and academia biologizing ‘normal', the hyperfocus on the brain, and neurodiversity movements the struggle against sanism across social movements Alisha Ali is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University where she heads the Advocacy and Community-Based Trauma Studies (ACTS) Lab. Her research examines the mental health effects of various forms of oppression... including racism and poverty. She is co-editor (with Bradley Lewis and Jazmine Russell) of the upcoming book “The Mad Studies Reader” (Routledge Press). Her current projects are investigating the effects of empowerment-based interventions for domestic violence survivors and low-income high school students, and the impact of an arts-based intervention to treat the effects of traumatic stress in military veterans. Alisha received her PhD in Applied Cognitive Science from the University of Toronto and completed her postdoctoral fellowship training in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto Bradley Lewis is a psychotherapist/psychiatrist in private practice and a humanities professor at New York University. He is devoted to enriching everyday life and clinical practice through integration with the arts, humanities, and cultural/political/religious study. In addition to co-editing the Mad Studies Reader, his books include Experiencing Epiphanies in Literature and Cinema; Narrative Psychiatry; and Moving Beyond Prozac, DSM, and the New Psychiatry: Birth of Postpsychiatry Jazmine Russell is the co-founder of the Institute for the Development of Human Arts, a transformative mental health educator, trauma survivor, and host of "Depth Work: A Holistic Mental Health Podcast." Hello, everyone; thanks for tuning in. We've been asked a few times over the years why we don't have podcasts dedicated to only one style of music, like Berlin School or ambient music, chill-out or New Age. Plenty of excellent mixes are available online. We're here to introduce you to new sounds from electronic musicians worldwide. “Variety is the spice of life,” and that's precisely what we aim to bring with the music we choose for each edition. You never know what will come up with new editions, showing an expanse of genres in our ongoing trip with humans and their machines. THE ARRIVAL OF PRACTICAL ELECTRONIC SYNTHESIZERS in the late 1960s and early 1970s caused a sensation around the world, but nowhere more than Germany. Postwar German artists were restless, intent on leaving behind all forms of traditional German music, as well as the Rhythm & Blues roots and song structure of popular Anglo-American rock. An innocent feature of early modular synthesizers called a “step sequencer” provided a tool that led to the development of an original style called “Kosmische Musik” or "Cosmic Music" in Germany, and—more playfully—“KrautRock.” The step sequencer made it easy to create hypnotic rhythm loops with up to 32 notes or steps, set a tempo, and mix them over flowing electronic drones. The effect was to “float” the listener through endless terrestrial or cosmic space: it was addictive. Seminal groups and individuals like CAN, KLAUS SCHULZE, TANGERINE DREAM, KRAFTWERK, CLUSTER, ASH RA TEMPEL, HARMONIA and others, created an enduring style that has influenced genres from Minimalism, Ambient and Electronic Dance Music, to New Age and Techno. Today we call it the "Berlin School." On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another timeless flight on electronic rhythms, on a program called SEQUENCER AIRLINES. Music is by ALPHA WAVE MOVEMENT, STATE AZURE, STEVE HAUSCHILDT, STARTERRA, MARTIN STURTZER, SYNTH REPLICANTS, STRAY THEORIES, NILS FRAHM, and EDGAR FROESE. Happy New Year to all our friends & listeners from the team, Mike, Andy and, of course, our host, Karen. Moving house over Christmas has been a busy time for me. Now in temporary accommodation with my daughter & son-in-law before another move later in the year back to the UK. Since starting Sequences in a cupboard (yes, you heard it right) with just a cassette machine, I have come full circle being back in a cupboard again while most of my possessions are in storage with just one trusty Mac computer to work on. This edition will be the only podcast for this month due to the upheaval of the last few weeks. I managed to put together a two-part podcast—the first session featuring sequential, cinematic, neo-classical music and Berlin School. Part 2 delves into ambient light & dark, symphonic, world and even experimental noise. It's with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to a good friend I've known for several years in the electronic music scene, Wolf Red, who passed away just before Christmas, and at the beginning of this new year, we lost Greek musician IASOS, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the New Age music genre in the 70s Mick The ED Playlist No 246 Part 01.04 Venja ‘Let There In Light' (album Genesis) https://venja.bandcamp.com/album/genesis 06.48 Venja ‘Genesis' 14.39 Intelligentsia ‘Canis-Majoris' (album Trilight) https://intelligentsia.bandcamp.com/album/trilight 21.25 Intelligentsia ‘Nova Aurora' 26.07 Ice Planet 9000 feat: Angelspit & Colfax Mingo ‘The Event' https://iceplanet9000.bandcamp.com/ https://youtu.be/P2-xsOMZ_1Q 33.42 Jörg Erren ‘Lens Flare' (album Snapshots) https://joergerren.bandcamp.com/album/snapshots 37.19 Jörg Erren ‘Ponte De Normandie' 40.06 Jörg Erren ‘Rammelsberg' 43.41 Jörg Erren ‘Starry Night' 46.15 Reinhardt Buhr ‘1 Hour Live Looping' ***https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1xXqBS-v2s https://reinhardtbuhr.com or 55.57 Natalia Quest ‘Inversion: Instrumental Version' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhbkzOyodZM 58.59 Bersarin Quartett ‘Gespenster' (Systeme) https://denovali.com/digitalstore/index.php 01.01.58 Bersarin Quartett ‘Autopoesie' 01.05.16 Thy Veils ‘The Ethereal' (album Psihodrom Compilation) https://psihodrom.bandcamp.com/album/v 01.11.51 Sequentia Legenda ‘Around The Great Central Sun' (album Alcyone) https://sequentia-legenda.bandcamp.com 01.21.46 Sequentia Legenda ‘Love Feeds Love' 01.24.36 Ivan Black ‘Overactive Techarchy' (album She's A Graph) https://ivanblack.bandcamp.com/album/shes-a-graph 01.31.10 Ivan Black ‘A Jamboree Of Surprises' (album The Darkest Thoughts Of Man) *** https://ivanblack.bandcamp.com/album/the-darkest-thoughts-of-man 01.39.44 Eraldo Bernocci /Hoshiko Yamane ‘Hidden Secret' (album Sabi) https://denovali.com/digitalstore/index.php 01.44.29 Eraldo Bernocci /Hoshiko Yamane ‘Ichirin' 01.50.28 Apocliptic & Romerium ‘Atmospheric Voyage' (album Air (Ambient, Ethereal, Symphonic) https://romerium.bandcamp.com 01.56.16 Apocliptic & Romerium ‘Mesosphere Melodies' 02.04.39 Arin Aksberg& Sam Rosenthal ‘Homecoming' (album Nordic Patterns) https://projektrecords.bandcamp.com 02.11.26 Arin Aksberg ‘Looking Back' 02.16.54 Carl Lord 'Touch' (album The 5 Senses) www.heartdancerecords.com 02.21.40 Retep Folo & Dorothy Moskowitz ‘The Black Hill Suite - Falling Skies' (Album Afterlife) https://buriedtreasure.bandcamp.com 02.24.38 Philip Chika ‘Caravan To The Cosmos' (album Caravan To The Cosmos) https://mutantmozart.bandcamp.com/album/caravan-to-the-cosmos Edit ***
This month's first edition will be our last podcast featuring a full lineup of different musicians, with the finale for this year just before the Christmas holiday, another special on a well-respected band and their various solo and other projects. We are back with a more upbeat selection here, including melodic sequential music and several Berlin School-influenced tracks. Only one new name, B. Ashra, to add to the roster of the thousands of musicians/bands we've introduced over more than 30 years. We include two of his recent albums, which span ambient music's dark & light side with meditational & ritual overtones. Talking of dark ambient, Vidna Obmana's Dante Trilogy is a collection of his early 2000 albums Tremor Spore & Legacy. Kamarius, with his ritual, mystical sound, relaxing and enigmatic atmospheres. Pioneers of French electro, Space Art with ‘Personal Duty', mastered by the legendary Michel Geiss and Dutch musician Remy's most conceptual project, including a ten-piece choir. Steve Hillman has been in this scene with sequential and progressive electronics for 40 years. We've included his latest ‘Sunsets Of Summers Past' converging on the prog rock side. Plumbing the murky and anodyne depths of German modernity, Christian Petzold – leading light of the Berlin School; protege of artist-filmmaker Harun Farocki – has a bafflingly uneven reputation. The highs are thrilling and poised; the lows, schlocky and off-note. Why so inconsistent? To separate the sauer from the succulent, the boys – joined by George MacBeth – set out on a long-distance road trip through the autobahns and service stations that have provided such weirdly compelling settings for his filmmaking – a journey that makes pit-stops at the great (Afire, Gespenster), the so-so (Jerichow, Cuba Libre), and the wurst (Barbara, Phoenix, Transit, Undine). With a career bookended by moments of brilliance we celebrate a true return to form.
This week on Cannesversations, Eliana and Patrick discuss Valeska Grisebach's self-described "dance with the Western genre," the 2017 Cannes Un Certain Regard film Western. Considered by some to be part of the second generation of the Berlin School and by others to be one of the distinct voices of the New Austrian Cinema, Grisebach distinguishes herself through her filmmaking approach by favoring a collaborative process with her actors in the conceptualization of scenes.Strangely enough, this does not take away from her directorial signature style, yet rather establishes her as one of the leading filmmakers of world cinema concerned with narrative realism. Western implements documentary-style filmmaking techniques to speak to the subsisting undercurrent themes of colonization and masculinity with contemporary panache and vigilant subtlety.Credit/ Resources:Marco Abel. It's great to see the feedback from some of you who enjoyed the Modular/vintage edition. Now, back to our usual look at recent new releases, with another round of superlative sounds from musicians based around the globe. Seven new names added to the list include, Under Water Sleep Orchestra, a nightmarish trip within blurry worlds and a nostalgic journey of dark ambient with a cinematic edge. The duo A Winged Victory Of A Dividing Pair music built on their foundations in ambient and neoclassical. Dramón brings experimental climatic and noisy music inspired by ambient and electronics as the basis of his creation. Incorporating gentle guitar synth flute and percussion, dappled with nature sounds, comes from Carlos Denger. Known for his performances using lap steel, guitarist Frank Schultz takes a drifting journey into a cavernous and droning ambience. The unusual setup by Edouard Ferlet of two pianos, one of which is mechanical, echoes the work of Philip Glass or Nils Frahm. Heart-based leadership is an approach to solving problems, building relationships and creating flow that expert practitioner Marie Reig Florensa uses to transform individuals, teams and organisations. In this episode of The Coach's Journey Podcast, Marie describes how, during 15 years as a producer on live television shows, she became adept at living in the moment and honed her intuition as she navigated the “big live opera” of broadcasting.Marie shares her journey of self discovery and how she came to recognise the intangible factors – aspirations, emotions, imaginations – that quietly drive our experiences and shape our lives. She also shares a precious technique that you can start using today to unlock your own ability to lead from the heart, follow your intuition and be at your best. In this episode, we talk about:How we feed our imagination, and thus shape the worldHow to harness discomfort and drive yourself forwardThe real uniqueness of our own authenticityTurning to ancient indigenous cultures for insight into human natureHow to follow your curiosity towards beautiful giftsMarie reflects on the transition from being a creative problem solver to becoming a facilitator of regenerative spaces, describing the principles that lie at the heart of her revolutionary work.To learn more about me, visit https://www.robbieswale.com/, and to learn more about Marie, visit https://mariereig.com/.For information about my wider work, my writing or to buy my books, visit www.robbieswale.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. In this episode, we start by talking about embodied and enactive cognitive science. We discuss an enactive-dynamic model of cognition, and how to think about psychological traits. We get into an enactive account of culture, and how psychological experiences are interpreted in particular cultural contexts. We also discuss social cognition from an enactivist perspective, and the role of theory of mind. We then talk about enactive artificial intelligence. We discuss why technology is not neutral, and feminist technoscience principles. We address a question from a patron regarding AI and human cognition. Finally, we talk about the need for cognitive and cultural diversity in science. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, JONATHAN VISSER, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, MIKKEL STORMYR, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, MORTEN EIKELAND, DR BYRD, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, PEDRO BONILLA, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. ¡Qué tal amigos de Dare to Learn! The Berlin School of Creative Leadership.

Look no further than the comment section of this post/video and you'll find knee-jerk answers to the question posed in this title driven by emotional reactions, that are justified after the fact by a poorly thought-out argument that is logically inconsistent. In the philosophy of sport, however, you go the opposite direction. You put forth a logically consistent case, based on established information, within the constraints of the argument. In this episode we chat with philosophy Ph.D. candidate at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain Adrian Kind, who recently collaborated on the article: “Is Bodybuilding a Sport?” with Eric. It is currently in peer review, but available as a pre-print for all to read. This philosophy of sport article by Kind and Helms is a rebuttal to another philosophy of sport article by Aranyosi (2018), where Aranyosi claims competitive Bodybuilding is not a sport, but rather an artistic presentation with sport-like elements. While Adrian and Eric didn't prove Bodybuilding is a sport in their paper, they refuted the argument as presented. Tune in to learn about the specifics of this debate, and how a conversation typically reserved for Reddit plays out in academia, and why philosophy is actually at the root of all science. 00:00 Intro to the one (another monster episode) … and introducing Adrian Aranyosi 2017 Body, skill, and look: is bodybuilding a sport? https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11097-017-9513-3 Kind & Helms 2023 Is Bodybuilding a Sport? https://sportrxiv.org/index.php/server/preprint/view/270/539 10:44 Discussing the Aranyosi paper: what makes an “activity”, a sport? 26:25 The rebuttal to the takes on posing 41:55 The physical skill component of bodybuilding 1:01:13 The Art vs. Sport spectrum argument Iron Culture Ep. 84- The Original Iron Sport: Gymnastics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_n5AiQvLzQ 1:24:00 Conceding that the physical skill involved in bodybuilding is displaying the body 1:33:40 Why is the categorisation of bodybuilding as a sport perceived as contemptuous? 1:49:03 Do you even lift? It's been a busy month again outside the music scene and with so many promos coming our way, decided that in the time we had between other projects would compile & release together two separate editions for November, giving us a breather for our last sessions of the year in December. The first podcast, no 221, features melodic uptempo music, progressive, sequential & energetic, with Berlin School-influenced tracks to round off a storming set of sequencing heaven for some of you. In the second, no 222, we delve into ambient music, the light & dark side, experimental and neo-classical, creating atmospheric futuristic & dramatic soundscapes, genuinely engaging. Ron Boots is among the most engaging Electronic Musicians ever exporting music from The Netherlands. Since the late 1980s, his work has been rooted in the Berlin School yet reaches far beyond the basic fundamentals of the genre. Combining elements of Contemporary Instrumental, Film Soundtracks and Spacemusic, Boots' music moves easily between the mainstream and the cosmic. In 1995, together with Kees Aerts, Ron founded the well-respected Groove Unlimited label. This was initially a vehicle for Ron and Kees to release their own solo albums and collaborations, such as BAH.
I hope you all enjoyed our 80's UK edition, with many hours of research going into tracing back musicians in that decade and trying to gather information from those who suddenly stopped making music in later years. Dungeon Synth is a genre we've discussed on several previous episodes, but these albums have typically expressed a somewhat narrow range of themes involving sword and sorcery type adventure. The genre is, of course, far more expansive. On this episode, we're listening to two dungeon synth albums from 2021 that highlight how varied dungeon synth can be.Albums DiscussedEarthly Delights by ChanterelleThe Golden Path by L A N D S R A A D Additional LinksKaptain Carbon's Top Dungeon Synth of 2021Episode 6: Chanterelle | Castbitten: A Dungeon Synth Podcast CreditsMusic by: 2MelloArtwork by: Patsy McDowellRoss on TwitterBirk on TwitterNight Clerk Radio on Twitter

Over the last month, we've had very little in the way of Berlin School & the more uptempo electronic genre, giving way to a large number of promos heading our way carrying the musical styles of modular, symphonic, neoclassical & diverse selection of ambient sounds. Once again, introducing new exciting artists in many fields, fifteen in total. It's been a while since we played some vintage sounds, from the late 90s into the new decade are two tracks from the group influenced by Kraftwerk, Elektronische-Maschine. To celebrate the music of the first 25 years, Timescape have a series of compilations released with Instrumental vocal and ambient highlights, with a track from their new EP “The Endless Journey” recorded in 2021, opening this edition. Paul Ellis occupies a special place in the Space Music genre due to his elaborate sequencer excursions and impressionistic travelogues. The Berlin School-aficionados feel at home with his work, although Ellis got beyond the imitation game and crafted a personalized approach. Here we discuss his new albums and artistic itinerary.

This week, guest host Sharyn Vane leads an exciting episode of the Book and Film Globe Week in Review podcast. Adhering to Neal Pollack's can't-miss books-to-movies-to-tv formula, Vane speaks first about her own review of the hot summer read “The Other Black Girl” with BFG contributor Katie Smith. They cover the “delicious irony” of how one of the must-reads this season from an overwhelmingly white publishing industry struggling with inclusivity is a Black author's thriller depicting exactly that struggle. Then Dan Friedman joins to discuss his take on Martha Wells and the Hugo-nominated Murderbot Diaries, featuring a wry half-robot SecUnit. He loves it, concluding that “the profoundly capable Wells … provides a creative, entertaining outing for one of the most endearing of contemporary science fiction characters.”Kenji Fujishima takes the mic to lead the podcast's film section, discussing with Vane his reviewof “Undine.” Fujishima concluded that the director Christian Petzold, “arguably the most fascinating and mysterious” of the recent generation of German filmmakers informally known as the Berlin School, has a “mysterious magic of his films, an aesthetic that reaches a wondrous zenith in Undine.”Zakiya Dalila Harris (Photo by Nicole Mondestin Photography)Listeners to last week's podcast probably remember Stephen Garrett's lively discussion of Cruella. Lani Gonzalez has had it with this “endless mining of properties” in search of backstories. She keynotes her brilliant piece “The Rise of the Prequels,” with a look at Wonka, but ponders whether we really need a whole movie about the “plot” of the Grease song “Summer Nights.” What's next? A look at how mean Regina George was in 3rd grade? And finally, Scott Gold talks about The Bad Batch, a spinoff of The Clone Wars. Cohen tells us that the latest entry in the Star Wars canon is “a highly entertaining, even thrilling start to a series, showcasing Dave Filoni and company, riding high from their success on The Mandalorian, as the most narratively adroit creative force in Star Wars land at the moment.” Order 66, inhibitor chips, being a “good soldier and following orders” … what's not to love?
