Trees have long been revered by the Celtic peoples for their wisdom, and used as crafting materials and even for their healing properties. It is no wonder that they are often so central to the stories that have carried through the ages and are described in such great detail despite their perceived simplicity. In this series we will explore native UK species and their place in the great tales of Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and beyond. Today is the summer solstice, a time associated with light and the banishing of demons and evil spirits. The Celts believed that the sun's intense heat would burn away darkness and open the path to the abundance and wealth of the summer and harvest months. It is also a time associated with one tree related story in particular: the ever raging battle between the kings of holly and oak. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of October 30 and November 6, 2023, and particularly for Halloween. MUSIC – ~18 sec – Lyrics: “Summer's over, winter's coming; summer's over, winter's coming.” That's part of “Winter is Coming,” by The Steel Wheels.  It sets the stage for an episode on the origins of Halloween in the ancient festival of Samhain, first observed centuries ago by Celtic peoples.  Celtic lands include Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and areas of England and France.  Samhain marked the end of the Celtic year on October 31, when summer had faded, winter was approaching, and—in Celtic belief—the dividing line between earth and the spirit world was thin, allowing spirits of the dead to roam.  As described by Miranda Aldhouse-Green in her 2015 book The Celtic Myths, quote, “It was at the festival of Samhain, at the edge of winter, that the world of humans was most at risk from the inhabitants of the world beyond: the boundaries were suspended and the spirits could prowl among the living, to their good or detriment depending on the character of the individual phantom,” unquote. Along with Halloween's date, many of its traditions can be traced back to Samhain practices, such as donning costumes or disguises, believed by the Celts to help them avoid being recognized by wandering spirits. When they weren't wandering the earth at Samhain, Celtic spirits and Celtic gods were believed to reside in what was known as the Otherworld.  In Celtic beliefs, watery areas were considered access points to the Otherworld.  Celtic mythology also gave special significance to swans, whose beautiful appearance on the water might have suggested connections to Celtic gods.  Here's a short version of an Irish legend about Samhain and swans; the opening and closing sounds are Tundra Swans, a North American species whose Berwick's Swan subspecies is found in Ireland and Wales. SOUNDS  - 4 sec – Tundra Swans. Oenghus was the Celtic god of love.  In the myth called “The Dream of Oenghus,” the god dreamed he saw a woman named Caer, the Celtic goddess of sleep and dreams, and he became smitten with her.  He searched far and wide for her, eventually finding her among a group of other women at a lake, and learning that every other year at Samhain the women turned into swans.  At the next Samhain, Oenghus returned to the lake and, by turning himself into a swan, was able to win Caer's heart.  The story ends with the pair of swans circling the lake three times, casting a sleep enchantment on everyone below, and flying off together.       SOUNDS  - 4 sec – Tundra Swans. I hope your Halloween has rich traditions and a bit of mystery, perhaps about waters or water creatures from worlds unknown. Thanks to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the swan sounds.  Thanks also to The Steel Wheels for permission to use part of “Winter is Coming.”  We close with another musical selection, which has become a Halloween-episode tradition on this show.  Here, for about 50 seconds, is “A Little Fright Music,” composed and recorded or Virginia Water Radio by Torrin Hallett. MUSIC – ~50 sec – Instrumental. SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close this episode.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. Brigid was a pre-Christian Irish goddess of fertility and life. As a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, she was the master of healing sharing similarities with the Catholic St. Brigid of Kildare. Originating from the word Briganti, meaning the Exalted One, the name Brigid has been anglicized from the old Irish Brig becoming the term for Bride. Brigid refers to the goddess' connection to sunlight and fire, but may also be related to dawn goddesses across the Indo-European world. Some mention Brigid as a triple goddess, but unlike most triple goddesses in Ireland, all of her aspects were named Brigid and had dominion over Smithcraft, healing and poetry. Brigid is associated with healing, fertility, motherhood, and inspired many writers and poets, Irish novelists credited Brigid as their inspiration. Her epithet, the Exalted One reflected her connection to crafting and wisdom. The Lebor Gabála Érenn established Brigid as the daughter of the Dagda, chief of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and her mother was the namesake mother-goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danann.

The more of these conversations I have, the deeper I understand why we're gathering here around the fire - answering a whispered call. Sometimes the ‘why' is in the guest's personal wisdom, earned and shared through a life fully lived. Other times, it's because their life and studies offer us a cultural framework different from our current one, often richer in wisdom and spirit. Today's conversation with Jen Murphy, an Irish woman descended from a lineage of storytellers and wisdom keepers on her maternal line; and creator of Celtic Embodiment, a cutting-edge modality that fuses the ancient wisdom of Celtic Mythology with the emerging field of Feminine Embodiment Coaching to transform modern life for women; is the later. Jen's fascination with the natural coalescence between our ancestral myths and our bodies as a potent brew to reclaim our sovereign power, brings forth musings on culture, story, language, mythical ancestors, and place.  We explore: the indispensability of story and arts in early Irish society;  the differences between oral and written traditions and what that means for culture; language as a means of accessing the lore stored in the land; place vs non-place and broader issues of cultural displacement; the Irish understanding of the three cauldrons of the body; our bodies as sites of reclamation and eldering; what the Irish sovereignty goddess and mature king have to teach us about personal and collective right relationship… and more. If you're someone who sees how we got here, knows things need to change, and is curiously looking around for examples, recipes, threads to alchemize into new possibilities for our culture and our future, join us around this fire. You're in for a potent, enlightening, and inspiring conversation.  May it spark a remembering from within your own body and the wisdom of your mythical ancestors. For leaders shifting away from the cultural norms of leadership obsess with “more” “bigger” and “eternal summer/growth”, who can we look to for guidance?  How might we find our way to a more mature, sustainable, feminized way of leading?  As an entrepreneur, I've grappled with these questions for years. Navigating ‘doing business differently' in a landscape where the intuitive, felt, sometimes non-linear inner impulses are seen as ‘unprofessional' and illogical, it can be challenging to find a compass to navigate.  Jen Murphy, our guest on the podcast today, believes that mythology - the stories & wisdom of old - provides us the most potent guidance to navigate leadership.  Jen believes in a new archetype for feminine leadership that re-thrones the sacred union of our mature feminine and masculine powers—powers that live within our own bodies as a spectrum of possibilities.  During this podcast, we'll explore: How Jen came to revision leadership through her background as a Feminine Embodiment Coach, Mythologist & Anthropologist  We unpack the current masculine overculture & why it keeps many leaders in their maiden energy  Jen shares with us many Celtic myths, stories & wisdom to reimagine what leadership could look like for modern coaches, creatives & leaders We touch on the different archetypes we might be playing out as a leader (often unconsciously) Women, wealth, witches & modern stewardship of money    This conversation will be particularly rich for women working in leadership roles, whether in business or their own creative or entrepreneurial endeavors.  Jen Murphy is a Feminine Embodiment Coach, Mythologist, and Anthropologist. She is the creator of Celtic Embodiment, a cutting-edge modality that fuses the ancient wisdom of Celtic Mythology with the emerging field of Feminine Embodiment Coaching to transform modern life for women. Jen is a certified Feminine Embodiment Coach and holds a degree in Medieval Irish & Celtic Studies and an M.A. in Anthropology & Development with a specialism in critical pedagogy - empowering learners to critique the power structures at play in their own learning experiences. Jen comes from a lineage of storytellers and wisdom keepers on her maternal line. She is fascinated by the natural coalescence between our ancestral myths and our bodies as a potent brew to reclaim our sovereign power. And so, her philosophy is ‘Let your body and mythology guide you home - home to YOU.' Also, good to know… Earlier this year our school recognized Jen' work in our 2022 Excellence In Coaching Celebrations in the category of Founders Flourishing Award which recognizes a practitioner in the multi-dimensional mastery of her body of work. Awarded by Founder Jenna Ward, this practitioner's work transcends categories. Our Story A Irish sovereignty goddess whose origins lie with the mythical Tuatha Dé Danann, Áine is also a sun deity, a bean sidhe (woman of the Sí), and fairy queen. Our guest Jen Murphy comes to KnotWork with a collection of Áine tales.  In a story from the mythological period, Áine has an ill-fated meeting with the unjust king Aillil Ólomm, who strips the land bare and threatens the goddess. Later, Áine is also found in a 14th century tale of Gerald, Earl of Desmond, also known as “The Wizard Earl.” Finally, a story collected in 1938 by the Irish Folklore Commission about a wise woman named Áine with two daughters who refuse to follow their mother's marital advice, each with disastrous results. Our Guest Jen Murphy is the creator of Celtic Embodiment, a cutting-edge modality that fuses the ancient wisdom of Celtic Mythology with the emerging field of Feminine Embodiment Coaching to transform modern life for women. Jen is a certified Feminine Embodiment Coach and holds a degree in Medieval Irish & Celtic Studies and an M.A. in the Anthropology of Development. Coming from a lineage of storytellers and wisdom keepers on her maternal line, Jen is fascinated by the natural coalescence between our ancestral myths and our bodies as a potent brew to reclaim our sovereign power.  Find Jen at https://www.celticembodiment.com/ (www.celticembodiment.com/) and on Instagram: @celticembodiment Our Conversation The ancient Celtic Sovereignty myth: the divine marriage (the banais ríghi). When the Sovereignty goddess unites with the king, she expects fir flaithemon, the prince's truth. A worthy ruler needs to be just, truthful, and discerning. Parallels to Sumerian tales of Inanna and her partners. The importance of reciprocity - between people and land, between sovereignty goddess and king The ways that religion and politics collude together and exploit the land Connections to Arthurian Grail legend and “The Elucidation,”a tale that describes the rape of the Well Maidens that leads to the closing of the wells and creation of the Wasteland. Hospitality as a key aspect of mythology and culture Ireland as a “goddess obsessed” island. And yet, with all of the divine feminine magic, all of the Mother Goddess worship, it was not a Utopia for women. There were ways in which the coming of the church offered a haven for women, and monasteries became places of learning. Jen's personal story of what it meant to see all part of herself, integrate the energy of midsummer, the deepest energy of the grandmothers, a death of a part of the self, and  rebirth and integration Our Music Music at the start of the show is by Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Our guests this week are Tommy McLarnon and Shannon Smith of the Save the Boyne campaign, which has been organizing local residents and concerned citizens to stop meat processing factory Dawn Meats from dumping wastewater into the Boyne River. The Boyne River is an important historical site and part of Celtic mythology, playing a key role in events like the Battle of the Boyne and stories like the Salmon of Knowledge. The river flows through a fertile valley, past ancient historical sites like the Hill of Tara and Newgrange, and through biodynamic farms where some of the country's best artisans make cider, whiskey, cheese, and grow vegetables. Despite being an integral part of “Ireland's Ancient East”, the River Boyne's health is under threat from Dawn Meat's proposed plan to build a pipeline that would discharge 400,000 liters per day of wastewater into the river. We spoke about the importance of protecting rivers as part of the broader struggle for climate justice, and the importance of grassroots organizing for social and environmental change. In our deep diving conversation, Jen and I explore: The parallels between the Selkie and An Mhaighdean Mhara, the mermaid How important it is to reclaim the feminine from the patriarchy and recover the lost self  The masculine and feminine energy that exist in all of us and how we leave behind seal skin (the feminine) when we suit up and head off to work and enter the masculine world The problem with “doing the feminine in a masculine way” Valuing doing over being, logic over intuition, linear over the cyclical The bean feasa, the wise woman who comes in to help and heal the mother who has lost herself Sisterhood, rupture and separation, the quest to return to companionship and the arms of the sea. The sacred geometry of the Celtic Embodiment logo, with all of its straight lines and spirals and how evocative it is of this story and these ideas. How systems of oppression can play out in the body Animism: the belief that everything has a soul. The Brehon Law, the original laws of Ireland that protect trees, proving the way that everything had an essence and a soul. The way the body remembers. Season 2 of Animisma is an offering of seasonal contemplation, offered with care, and offered in peace. It is a walk along the hidden paths, along forest floors covered in soft grass, sunlight peeking through ancient boughs, breezes quietly moving across our faces as we walk with permission through mist and shadow. It is a walk in the presence of giants, of plants as portals, mystical herbs, and magical flowers.Episode 2: Fàilte a charaidean (welcome friends). Today, we will create a tree spirit altar together, in honor of Imbolc. If you cannot access all of these beautiful trees and plants in our human realm, this episode offers you space to gently still yourself and witness through your mind's eye the building of a beautiful and sacred offering to the traditional start of Spring.Imbolc is the beautiful cross-quarter fire festival and celebration of awakening, fertility, birthing, and beginning. It is the promise of renewal, of hidden potential, of the earth slowly awakening and of life-force stirring. We welcome the growth of the returning light and witness life's rebirth at this time. Imbolc is translated from ancient Irish and means ‘in the belly' or ‘around the belly' and refers to both the pregnancy of sheep and to the fertility of the Earth, that is the swelling belly of the earth goddess. Imbolc was the traditional celebration of Spring, as opposed to the modern interpretation of Spring beginning on the Spring Equinox.Today, we create a sacred altar for Imbolc - requesting blessings from Brighid, the Goddess honored on this day while partnering with the sacred tree, Rowan (Witchwood), and sacred plant Heather (Fraoch) and snowdrop, a messenger of hope.

We also look at the significance of pride and how one can make rash decisions due to mockery, as well as discussing the significance of Fairy and the unknown. Also, why is Medb spelled like that?

For starters, she serves up what we know about Samhain's history and traditions and how some of those traditions have been adapted for the modern holiday of Halloween. Then she finishes off this spooky special by taking a closer look at a couple of the supernatural figures associated with Samhain: the pookah and the Dullahan. Irish Spirits

This episode was called 'The Salt Bae' which we thought was an apt name for Irish lads who fall in love with women that were formerly seals. Yes, that's right this episode is all about the selkies, merrows and mermaids. We knew there was something fishy going on when Alex told us to get the mead and sherry in but as per usual the cocktail was delicious - check out our Instagram for the recipe where you can (responsibly) drink along! The briny taste transported us to the shores of our little island, which though small, is full of human-fish hybrid lore. Though our more docile creatures won't drag you down to the depths of the Atlantic kicking and screaming - we always knew there were secrets behind those black eyes...our sources this episode were: https://www.wildernessireland.com/blog/irish-myths-legends-part-4-selkies/, Wikipedia, https://www.celtic-weddingrings.com/celtic-mythology/the-seal-people, https://talesfromthewood.ie/selkies-and-merrow-the-sea-folk-of-ireland/ , https://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends/legends-selkies-hidden-germs-sea-mythology-006409, http://www.elisabethgifford.com/blog/2014/5/3/the-secret-history-hidden-in-the-selkie-story, https://www.thebottleimp.org.uk/2016/12/selkies-sex-and-the-supernatural/, https://www.icysedgwick.com/selkies-folklore/ , https://etc.ancient.eu/education/summer-solstice-celtic-traditions/, https://punchdrink.com/recipes/jabberwocky/, https://www.liquor.com/slideshows/salt-cocktails/, https://www.sliabhliagdistillers.com/an-dulaman/, duchas.ie, Field Guide to Irish FairiesFurther reading for listeners:Briggs, Katharine. 1976.
