Ethan Sellers of Logical Fleadh emailed: "Hey Marc - Just wanted to send a belated thank - you for the Mother's Day spin.  Such a nice thing to highlight the women in Celtic music.  The strong presence of women  -  especially instrumentalists  -  in traditional music is one of the things I really appreciate about the field. Cheers," Ann Peck McBride emailed: "I first heard the podcast about 13 years ago! And it's taken me all this time to become a Patreon member. Sorry, Marc! I'm embarrassed to say I listen to your podcast while I'm doing housework. (It's a treat I give myself so that I'll actually do the housework) I am always surprised at the wonderful new Celtic artists you play. I first listened to you because I needed to hear all the Celtic music I could. I listen now, partly for that reason, and partly because for the last few years, I have co - hosted a Celtic Music Hour program in Salem Oregon, on KMUZ. As my friend (and I think yours) Steve Behrens said, "We've fallen down the rabbit hole of Celtic music!" And here in the Pacific Northwest, we have a LOT of Celtic musicians... Thanks" Debra Roche emailed a photo: "Hello, Mark, I recently played your St Patrick's Day 2023 podcast from SiriusXM and loved it! Many years ago (1985 - 1991)I had opened The Celtic Cottage & Roche's of Ireland in Davenport, & Bettendorf, IA which brought me to do an Irish show at St Ambrose University for their college radio show. How much fun that time in my life was! Whenever you give back to your community it is just the best when your family roots are connected! As my father's parents where from County Limerick Ireland. Glin & New Castle West. Hope you're well and thank you for your music podcast!” Melissa Helman emailed a photo of her dirty dishes: "So exciting, I know. Keep up the great work with the podcast." Christopher Patrick of Salem, MA emailed a couple photos: "Hello Mark! I can't tell you how happy I am to have discovered the ‘Irish & Celtic Music Podcast!' But I'm gonna try, all the same! You see, in my childhood, my 5 siblings and I would get loaded up into our family station wagon every Saturday morning by our mother. She would then proceed to drive us all into Boston for our weekly Irish Step Dancing lessons. Our rides both in and back were spent listening to Boston's AM's radio show, ‘The Irish Hour,' and later, ‘The Irish Hit Parade,' (still on the air to this day!) So, those jigs and reels were ingrained in us in our step dancing, and the other traditional music was from our rides there and home. My mother soon landed us an agent, and we, the six kids, danced all around the Greater Boston area. So, it is no real big surprise that these days, I play in an Irish Music Band with my family. Comprised of myself, my brother, two sisters, and brother - in - law, we perform under the name of ‘FitzBlarney,' based in Salem, Massachusetts. I've attached a coupla' photos for you, too  -  one of the six of us in our 1970s step - dancing attire, and one from this past St. Patrick's Day, where FitzBlarney played out at The Witches Brew pub in Salem. The music you play means a lot to me, so, I recently became a patron. Just out of appreciation! Thanks again, and ‘Sláinte!' P.S. I would love to one day get on your podcast! That'd be so cool!"

Are you addicted to computer games? Do you stay up all night playing them? There's no doubt that the excitement and sophistication of games these days makes them hard to put down. But should we worry about their effects on our health? We are spoilt for choice when it comes to gaming: You can role play – creating your own fantasy characters and stories, giving you a chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and frustration in violent situations where you kill people with guns. Can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us? Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to provoking acts of extreme violence. Internet safety advisor, Alan MacKenzie, thinks "many people understandably will just think that a game is just a game and not realising the explicit content that's in there". He gives an example of the violence and sexualisation of women which he says is "wholly inappropriate for anybody, never mind children." Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us. Some games are educational and using games consoles can help children learn good dexterity. Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight. Video gamers are also no longer just solitary creatures. For some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself. So it seems today, gaming isn't just for geeks and if used in moderation we can all take part. What video games do you play and how do they make you feel? 词汇表addicted 上瘾的sophistication 精密复杂spoilt for choice 多不胜选role play 角色扮演、角色游戏fantasy 幻想imaginary world 想象的世界violent 暴力的virtual reality 虚拟的现实provoking 挑衅,激怒explicit 明晰的,清楚的sexualisation 性别化harmless 无害的consoles (游戏机)操纵器dexterity 灵巧,机敏solitary 孤独的sense of achievement 成就感

This episode of TipTopTipsEdu is packed full of insights and advice around the important topics of Online Safety, Digital Citizenship and all-round sound approaches to how we keep our young people (and teachers) safe, happy and healthy when working and learning whilst online. Our guest on the show in this episode is the fantastic, Alan Mackenzie. Known as the ‘Esafety Adviser’, what Alan doesn’t know about mindful approaches to all of the issues surrounding Safeguarding, Online Safety, Digital Citizenship and all that surrounds it, isn’t worth knowing. In this episode, the questions I posed to Alan included: As students will be returning to school soon, what online safety advice would you give to schools? Like myself, your ordinary day job is to go out and physically visit schools – what has changed for you over the last year, do you think virtual has been a help or a hindrance? Online safety can be a very diverse and fast-moving environment and teachers are already busy juggling different priorities, how can schools keep up to date on the things that matter to them? How can teachers stay on top of current issues related to Online Safety? To learn more about Alan and his work, please do check out his website, https://www.esafety-adviser.com/. To connect directly with Alan, follow him on Twitter here. Whilst we have you too, Alan also worked with us on our recent ‘Online Safety Guide 2021’, a guide jam-packed with the latest advice and information on this important topic. We’re now several episodes into NetSupport Radio’s Five in Five series, where education experts give us a quick insight into their specialist area by sharing five quick tips – all in five minutes (or thereabouts). The latest episode sees Al Kingsley speaking to eSafety Adviser, Alan Mackenzie. Alan chats to Al about his five top tips for teaching online safety to students:Concentrate on the positives (to prevent students switching off) but introduce some negatives. Be careful with rules-based education such as “Don’t talk to strangers” or “Don’t share personal information” etc. These types of statements are unrealistic and lack any context.Keep it real: if you want positive impact, talk about the spaces they are in and the games/apps they are using.Never victim blame: Using examples of a serious incident and then asking questions such as “What did he/she do wrong?” comes across as judgemental.Keep it engaging: By talking about the things they are using, students will open up and ask questions on things that may be affecting them.
