¿Te gustaría que tus ideas conecten más, que la gente recuerde lo que cuentas, o que tu mensaje no pase desapercibido?Entonces necesitas aprender a contar historias.

We were thrilled to talk with author Eowyn Ivey about her new book, BLACK WOODS BLUE SKY. During our conversation, Eowyn shared her writing habits, including a description of her writing cottage, and tells us about her reading life. Topics ranged from motherhood on the page and in real life, her family's literary life in Alaska, and Proust vs Joyce. In our own reading lives, we both read and discuss “The North Mail” by Amelia B. Edwards from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: from Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We gave this one four paws up. Or should it be eight paws? Whatever the rating system should be for cougars, we both enjoyed Edwards's story. It has a good creep factor and atmosphere, both indoors and outside. Other books we've enjoyed include novels HAPPY LAND by Dolan Perkins-Valdez and THE GRIFFIN SISTERS GREATEST HITS by Jennifer Weiner; a quartet of novellas, OLD NEW YORK by Edith Wharton; and two works of nonfiction: STORYWORTHY: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling by Matthew Dicks and DEEP WORK: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport. Big thanks to this episode's sponsor, James Crews and Brad Peacock. The new poetry collection they co-edited is available on May 6: LOVE IS FOR ALL OF US: Poems of Tenderness and Belonging from the LGBTQ+ Community and Friends (with illustrations by Lisa Congdon). We also recap a great Biblio Adventure to the Mark Twain House to hear Ethan Rutherford (author of NORTH SUN, OR THE VOYAGE OF THE WHALESHIP ESTHER) in conversation with Amity Gaige about her new novel, HEARTWOOD. Chris also got to attend THE MOUNT'S virtual book club discussion of Edith Wharton's A SON AT THE FRONT and Willa Cather's ONE OF OURS, led by Anne Schuyler and Julie Olin-Ammentorp. As always, there are more books inside this episode than we can fit here! Enjoy, and be sure not to miss our conversation with Eowyn Ivey at the end. Oh, and reminder: our second quarter readalong pick is THE GOOD HOUSE by Tananarive Due (Zoom discussion on 6/8 and also on Goodreads).
Matthew Dicks, bestselling author of Storyworthy and Stories Sell reveals how stories captivate, connect, and inspire. The key isn't a list of events but a moment of transformation – without change, it's just a report. Matthew's journey to globally-recognized expert began with a surprise win at The Moth storytelling competition, but it wasn't luck. His years as a writer, teacher, and even wedding DJ prepared him to hold any audience's attention. His honest account of overcoming self-doubt shows that storytelling isn't about talent – it's about practice. A simple but life-changing habit, which Matthew calls "Homework for Life," involves capturing one meaningful daily moment. This practice not only builds a reservoir of stories but also makes everyday life richer and more memorable. Great stories, Matthew says, start with action and location to instantly draw listeners in. He also challenges the belief that humor is risky – nostalgic or relatable moments create connection without the need for punchlines. Many businesses get storytelling wrong, drowning audiences in data instead of building connections. Matthew highlights successes like Domino's bold rebrand and failures where companies lose control by ignoring their flaws. In leadership, storytelling builds trust and culture. Meetings become more impactful when leaders share real moments, not polished performances. Matthew's advice is clear: authenticity beats perfection. Stories connect because they're real. Whether you're giving a speech or pitching an idea, this episode offers practical tools to turn information into lasting impact. The greatest stories inspire, terrify, inform and change us. They might change our lives, or simply help us get through the day. But if we know how central stories are to the human experience, why don't more of us learn how to craft them more effectively? Matthew Dicks has been writing (and teaching writing) for decades now, and he's seen the craft of storytelling change many lives in many ways. Most of all, he's seen just how beneficial it is to tell stories to ourselves. Whether your ultimate goal is to share your stories with the world, or you just want to give better presentations at the office, learning how to craft a great story won't just give you more influence over others, it'll give you more influence over yourself. In that spirit, I asked Matthew to help me improve a story I was preparing for a work presentation, and he walked me through his thought process every step of the way. “We're actually biologically positioned and programmed to receive stories. For most of existence, for the hundreds of thousands of years humans have existed on the planet, we have not been able to transfer information in written form from one person to another.” -Matthew Dicks As bookkeepers, we love the details. We need ways of communicating that connect us through authentic and entertaining lived experiences. Matthew Dicks, storyteller and bestselling author, is this episode's featured guest. Join me on a new series as I share my journey from buying books to renting them from the library, a transition I began in January 2022. I discuss the numerous benefits of this approach, such as saving money, reducing clutter, and the accountability of return deadlines. Over the past two years, I've read at least 24 books and started taking notes to enhance my learning. This journey has inspired me to solidify the content by teaching it, interviewing authors, and reviewing their books on the show. In this episode, I kick things off by exploring "Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling" by Matthew Dicks, highlighting the importance of storytelling in public speaking and encouraging listeners to check out The Moth and its podcast for inspiration. Next, we delve into the art of storytelling through the expertise of Matthew Dicks, a seasoned storyteller who has won the Moth Story Slam 36 times and the Grand Slam five times. We'll discuss the significance of storytelling in various contexts, from marketing to personal growth, and how everyone has story-worthy moments, even if they seem ordinary. Drawing insights from Dicks's book "Storyworthy," I'll share techniques such as keeping a story log and identifying the five-second story to help craft engaging narratives. Additionally, I'll introduce a new series where I review impactful books and invite their authors for interviews, encouraging listeners to send in their book recommendations. If you're an author interested in having your book reviewed or being interviewed, reach out via email or social media. I'm excited to embark on this enriching literary journey with you! Stories are powerful… they help us bond to one another, they help communicate ideas and information far more effectively than if we just share the idea or information alone. They trigger the release of a variety of good hormones and they're just plain entertaining. But often the advice to tell stories is hard to follow because it's not always clear what counts as a story or how exactly you should go about telling one. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I teacher, novelist, non-fiction author and famed story teller Matthew Dicks. Matthew is the author of Story Worthy, a book that is often recommended and shared in the copywriting community as a how-to manual on the art of story telling. I read it a few weeks ago, and honestly believe that every copywriter should have this book on their shelf. And just in case you want a quick link, we'll have one in the show notes for this episode. This is a great conversation that I think you'll want to listen to at least twice. In this week's episode, we highlight two stories from this year's Proton Prom, Story Collider's annual fundraiser and celebration of science storytelling. Part 1: Pamela Toh is dead set on being the “bad kid” at school. Part 2: On a family vacation to Disney, Matthew Dicks becomes more and more frustrated by his daughter's strange behavior. Pamela Toh is an aspiring writer and graduate student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where she conducts research on how the brain and body coordinate to elicit the symptoms of PTSD. Originally from Singapore, Pamela moved to NYC after completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (because the proximity to sun and surf was simply too much to bear). When not hunched over a lab bench, Pamela can be found coveting the latest LEGO sets, or in a yoga studio trying to correct her bad posture. Matthew Dicks is the internationally bestselling author of six novels and three nonfiction titles, including Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, Change Your Life Through the Art of Storytelling, and Stories Sell: Storyworthy Strategies to Grow Your Business and Brand. His novels have been translated into more than 25 languages worldwide. When not hunched over a computer screen, he fills his days as an elementary school teacher, storyteller, comedian, blogger, wedding DJ, minister, and communications consultant. He's been teaching for 25 years and is a former West Hartford Teacher of the Year and a Connecticut Teacher of the Year finalist. Matthew is a record 60-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 9-time GrandSLAM champion whose stories have been featured on their nationally syndicated Moth Radio Hour. Matthew is the founder of Speak Up, a Hartford-based storytelling organization that produces shows throughout New England. He teaches storytelling and public speaking worldwide to individuals, corporations, school districts, hospitals, universities, and more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Unleashing the Power of Content Karma in Your StrategyEmbracing the Concept of Content KarmaHey, everyone! Welcome back to the third installment of our "Everything is Content" series. Today, we're diving into a concept I'm super excited about—let's call it "content karma" for now. It's inspired by Matthew Dicks' enlightening book, "Storyworthy," which revolutionized my view on storytelling and content creation. The idea is simple yet powerful: We're all storytellers, and by harnessing this innate skill, we can endlessly craft engaging content. Why Highlighting Others Works WondersHighlighting and sharing others' work has been a cornerstone of my journey, especially during my early days as the WordPress Chick. By focusing on what others were doing, I not only carved out my niche but also discovered a formula for content creation that felt both comfortable and authentic. Launching a podcast became a turning point, allowing me to amplify others' voices and, in turn, my own. This approach is not just about creating content—it's about building connections and community.A Project Close to My HeartI'm currently working on a special podcast series aimed at amplifying women's voices in finance and entrepreneurship. The goal is to share their impactful messages with my audience, much like how we share our favorite novels or movies with friends. This project will result in a rich tapestry of content, including podcasts, videos, blog posts, and social campaigns, all designed to spread their invaluable insights. How You Can Make Your Own Value DepositsCreating value deposits, or what I like to call "content karma," is about sharing, highlighting, and promoting the work of others. Here are some ways you can start making your own deposits:Roundup Lists: Compile lists of people, tools, and resources that have influenced you.Mentors: Share the work of both official and unofficial mentors whose teachings have impacted your journey.Content Sharing: Promote content that resonates with you, whether it's through newsletters, social media, or personal recommendations.Engagement: Actively engage with others' content to help increase its visibility. The Ripple Effect of GivingBy focusing on giving rather than receiving, you create a win-win situation: your audience gains valuable insights, and you help boost the visibility of others within your community. This ethos of goodwill, or content karma, ensures that your efforts will eventually come back to you tenfold.Looking AheadAs we continue our series, remember that in the realm of content creation, everything—and everyone—is worth celebrating. Stay tuned for our next discussion on documenting with a twist, and let's keep spreading those value deposits far and wide.
