A youth charity believes the Government's taking courageous steps, to tackle chronic school absence. Ministry of Education data shows more than one thousand students weren't enrolled in school for more than a year in 2024 - a 576 percent increase on a decade ago. Graeme Dingle Foundation CEO Jo Malcolm-Black told Andrew Dickens it's good to see the Government is wanting to tackle the problem. She says early intervention and consistent support reduces the risk of disengagement. Malcolm-Black hopes schools, social services and community organisations will support the Government's approach.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New regulations which classify the entire country as a rent-pressure-zone (RPZ) may have unintended consequences for people operating short-term holiday rental accommodation in areas that up to now, have not been RPZs. This means people in areas like Kenmare, Dingle, Tralee, may now need planning permission to operate short-term lets as they are all now classed as RPZs. Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae spoke to Treasa about his concerns over this.

EasyGo, Ireland's leading EV charging network, has partnered with the Department of Transport to launch a first-of-its-kind national pilot scheme aimed at removing one of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption in Ireland. The Shared Charging Initiative will address the challenge faced by many urban and suburban residents who lack access to off-street EV parking and, by extension, home charging. Through the scheme, homeowners can share their private EV chargers with neighbours and the wider public via the EasyGo platform - creating a shared, community-powered solution to charging accessibility that is both practical and accessible. The scheme will launch as a pilot in selected locations, with participation open to homeowners in Kilcock, Co. Kildare; Dingle, Co. Kerry; and the Dublin neighbourhoods of Finglas, Stoneybatter and Phibsborough. Those interested in participating in Shared Charging can apply through the website, with consideration being given to their property and location. If successful, participants are provided with an EasyGo EV charger free of charge and can then share access to their private EV chargers with neighbours and members of the public via the EasyGo platform, providing a practical solution in areas where off-street parking is limited or unavailable. The pilot will continue throughout 2025 and aims to gather valuable data to inform future EV policy and infrastructure planning. Shared charging models have shown promise internationally in helping reduce pressure on public networks, promoting sustainable transport, and strengthening local community ties. Ollie Chatten, CEO of EasyGo, said: "We are delighted to officially launch the Shared Charging Initiative. This scheme has the power to reshape how communities think about EV infrastructure, enabling people to participate directly in Ireland's low-emission future. It's a meaningful step toward inclusive, scalable charging access." Welcoming the rollout of the pilot scheme, Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien, Minister for the Transport, said: "This innovative pilot reflects how local action can support national ambition. By enabling homeowners to share access to EV chargers, the Shared Charging Scheme taps into the power of the community to close infrastructure gaps, accelerate EV adoption, and help achieve our climate goals. It's a practical, inclusive, and forward-thinking initiative that strengthens the resilience and accessibility of Ireland's charging network."
If you travel out the Dingle peninsula even farther than Dingle, there is small community called Dunquin. French-American musician and composer Zoé Basha released her debut album Gamble on April 17. Blending storytelling traditions, Appalachian mountain songs, Irish traditional music, and American blues and ragtime, the album is a woozy melange. We talk about her life journey, travelling around the US, joining the Occupy San Francisco protests, moving to Dingle, Dublin, France to learn traditional French timber framing, and back to Ireland. Throughout it all, there's music, though she did fall out of love with it for a while before Rufous Nightjar started up with Anna Mieke and Branwen Kavanagh. And now comes her debut solo album Gamble. From the press release: Zoé's debut is an intimate exploration of identity, grief, the deconstructing of societal norms, and the complexities of human connection, all delivered with a mesmerising voice that echoes the vulnerability and depth of her diverse influences. Inspired by the greats of times passed such as Billie Holiday, The Mills Brothers, Jimmie Rodgers, Joni Mitchell, Texas Gladden, Edith Piaf and The Steve Miller Band– as well as her peers in the Irish folk music scene, Zoé Basha savours the sounds of golden eras with contemporary nuance and shameless honesty. Zoé Basha tour dates: April 24: De Burgos Club, Galway April 25: The Glens Centre, Manorhamilton, Leitrim April 26: The Duncairn, Belfast April 27: The Record Room, Limerick May 1: Fennelly's of Callan, Kilkenny May 2: Bray Jazz Fest, Wicklow May 3: The Crane Lane Theatre, Cork May 4: Blennerville, Tralee, Co. The great Kerry footballer Dr Sean Murphy has died. The man from Camp whose club was Dingle played in five All-Ireland finals and won three. His performance in Kerry’s 1959 victory over Galway was so brilliant that the game became known as ‘The Seán Murphy All-Ireland.’ Jerry spoke to broadcaster John Drummey who interviewed Dr Sean last year as part of the Legacy Series which aired on Radio Kerry.
Hello, our favourite animated friends, and welcome to the show. This week, Óran and Clodagh are just back from Dingle, County Kerry, where they and Larry attended the Animation Dingle Festival. Óran was thrilled because he got to touch the actual models used for the latest Wallace and Gromit movie 'Vengeance Most Fowl'. The film was made in stop-motion animation, which means amongst other things that it took a super-long time to produce. It's a welcome return for Stuart Lawler to the podcast. Stuart flew his private jet over to Anaheim in California to attend CSUN Assistive Tech Conference. What new toys are out there for the VI community? What is accessibility like at the event? Did Stuart fight any fires? How much does a beer cost? And where the hell is Anaheim? All these questions and not a lot more will be answered by the tech guru. Jerry spoke to Ted Creedon about plans in Dingle this May to remember the country’s greatest catastrophe. This year is the 180th anniversary of the Great Famine.
It has been a rough couple of years for Ireland's national broadcaster RTÉ, with a series of scandals damaging public trust and support for its funding in future. Revelations about secret payments to top presenters led to many refusing to pay their license fee, while politicians subjected executives to often aggressive grillings on live television. The man tasked with sorting out the mess is Director General Kevin Bakhurst, formerly RTÉ's head of news and previously a senior news editor at the BBC, where his work covered everything from the end of British rule in Hong Kong to the 9 /11 attacks in New York and Washington. Kevin joined Chris at Ireland's Edge in Dingle on election day last December to discuss the challenges he and his colleagues face in securing the future of our national broadcaster. Send us a textEpisode 186For a man whose name is synonymous with the biggest band the world has ever known, Ringo Starr's story has often been overshadowed. He was the fourth and final piece of the Beatles puzzle, the unassuming drummer who sat at the back while Lennon and McCartney took the spotlight. Yet, beneath the steady beat of his rhythms and the easygoing charm, Ringo Starr's journey was one of resilience, luck, and a quiet determination that carried him from the backstreets of post-war Liverpool to the absolute pinnacle of global fame.Born Richard Starkey, his childhood was anything but glamorous. A sickly boy, he spent more time in hospital beds than in school, narrowly surviving illnesses that could have set his life on a different path. But through it all, there was music. The infectious rhythms of skiffle, the pulse of rock and roll—it was a sound that reached him even as he lay confined to a hospital ward. By the time he was a teenager, he had traded factory work for drumsticks, carving out a name for himself in the smoke-filled clubs of Liverpool's raw and raucous music scene. Then came the call that changed everything. August 1962. The Beatles, already a local phenomenon, had a problem. Their drummer, Pete Best, was out, and they needed someone new—someone rock-solid, with flair, with charisma. The answer? Ringo. In a decision that would alter the course of music history, he stepped behind the kit, and the Fab Four were complete.Yet Ringo was never just ‘the drummer.' His playing, often underrated, was the secret ingredient in the Beatles' alchemy—a backbeat that gave shape and swing to their most legendary songs. And when the band imploded, Ringo did what many never expected: he thrived. While others wrestled with their legacies, he found a new life beyond the Beatles—solo hits, films, collaborations with the biggest names in music, and a second act that has lasted longer than the Beatles themselves. This is the story of the boy from Dingle, who fought through hardship, outlasted expectation, and found his place in history. It's the story of Ringo Starr—the drummer who kept the world in time, the Beatle who never looked back, and the man who, against all odds, just kept playing.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com
