December 14, 2012, is remembered by many as the day of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. But Alissa Parker remembers it as the day she lost her daughter, Emilie. In the nine and a half years since, Alissa has found solace in the kindness of others and in the goodness of a God who has allowed her to feel her daughter's presence time and time again. While the trauma of her loss still causes Alissa to feel anxiety, she continues to find comfort in the confidence that she will be reunited with Emilie again. 2:03- Emilie 12:44- The Aftermath 17:58- Where Was God? 22:59- The Many Ways We Mourn With Those Who Mourn 31:36- “What Her Life Had Now Become” 36:03- Avoiding Pointing Fingers 40:12- Safe and Sound Schools 44:15- Everything Is Connected 49:39- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Is forgiveness a one-time thing? Is it possible to forgive what seems like the ultimate unforgivable act? Are angels real? Do you believe in miracles? Even after something as tragic as having your child murdered? Alissa Parker is one of the parents who lost their child during the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting that happened on December 14th, 2012. Her 6-year old daughter, 19 other children, and 6 adults were among the victims that day. Alissa opens up about that day, the days that followed, how she found her way. She tells us of miracles, of where her darling Emilie is now, her book, and the focus of her attention outside her family these days in her non-profit organization, Safe and Sound Schools. This is a true testament of taking a horrific “sucking lemons” moment, the searching and finding of the “sugar” (over and over again), that has made her find her “sweet lemonade”. Join us with tissues and honor for this amazing woman.
So many school shootings. The Parkland, Florida shooting hit home for many parents and educators. It re-opens old wounds for Alissa Parker. Parker lost her daughter, Emilie, in the Sandy Hook shooting five years ago.She has since co-founded Safe and Sound Schools organization. Alissa Parker knows bodybuilding and how her fitness is directly tied to her nutrition strategy (formerly known as diet.) She also knows how to keep the gains in the gym heading in the right direction when it comes to meal time. 80%ish of the fitness goals one sets for themselves is controlled by what he or she puts into their body - so developing sound eating habits is crucial to hitting those goals you have seen for yourself this year and on into the future. Alissa and I converse on nutrition in the fitness industry, how people's short term diets and goals are counter-productive to longterm health and fitness empowerment and how she battled body image issues since kindergarten to become an International Federation Bodybuilding (IFBB) pro figure competitor. Alissa’s latest book “Fit Starts in the Kitchen” is a cookbook with 100 recipes that she created. She also teaches about how to live a balanced, flexible lifestyle free from the yo-yo's of fad diets and unrealistic expectations.
