Anyone who has looked into the Sasquatch phenomenon knows about the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film, and it's star, affectionately known as Patty, who glanced over her shoulder in the famous home movie frame 352 to become an icon of Bigfoot Lore forever. The Patterson-Gimlin footage ignited a nation-wide frenzy of Bigfoot searches, sightings, and debates and the majority of this activity, in the early years, was focused on the American Northwest; our debut star having come to us from the Bluff Creek area of Del Norte County California. And while the vast forests of Cascadia may have given us the lion's share of Sasquatch reports, the fact is that ape-like cryptids have been reported in every state. In fact, reports of such creatures from the East Coast have risen to rival some of the bast tales from the Northwest. In this episode of Renegade Files we will explore the misty Blue Ridge Mountains, the humid swamps of Florida, and many woodland locations along the Eastern US corridors in search of Sasquatch Stories from credible witnesses. We'll analyze how Bigfoot Sightings in the East differ from those more traditional encounters we all grew up on from the West, while also considering how this humanoid cryptid changes as we move from South to North. In doing so, you may be surprised at how these variations actually combine to lend credence, and perhaps even evidence for the existence of one of the world's most famous elusive beast. So join me now and together we will sort out the sordid details of Sasquatch and Bigfoot: East Coast / West Coast Beef. For centuries, eerie tales of sea serpents and monstrous lake creatures have slithered through American folklore, leaving us to wonder if these legendary beasts still lurk beneath the surface.IN THIS EPISODE: When you think of monsters in America, you probably think of Bigfoot in the American Northwest – or perhaps the Chupacabra in the South. Maybe you think of Dogman in the upper Midwest. But people don't typically think of the American lakes and shores, where we have our own collection of monsters and sea serpents. (American Sea Monsters) *** As the saying goes – don't do the crime if you can't do the time. But once in a while the punishment goes far beyond what the crime calls for. (Cruel and Unusual Punishments) *** Marilyn Monroe was found dead of a drug overdose on August 5, 1962. And while the facts of her death are shocking, her troubling childhood wasn't pretty either. We'll look at the life and death of this Hollywood bombshell. (The Troubled Life And Shocking Death of Marilyn Monroe) *** We'll take a look at, not the very first serial killer - but the first serial killer FAMILY in America! The bloody Benders! Sightings and even pictures have emerged, prompting research and raising questions about whether the creature, also known as Sasquatch, was real. That year, Director Peter Byrne of the Bigfoot Information Center and Exhibition in The Dalles, Oregon, sent the FBl"about 15 hairs attached to a tiny piece of skin."Byrne wrote that his organization couldn't identify what kind of animal it came from, and was hoping the FBI might analyze it. He also wanted to know if the FBI had analyzed suspected Bigfoot hair before; and if so, what the bureau's conclusion was. #sasquatch_01 #bigfoot #bigfootwitness --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

Check out Grizzly's Store! https://grizzlyllc.myshopify.com If you have an encounter you like to share or would like to be a guest on our show, email us at bigfootgrizz@gmail.com For Thursday: Russell Wiltala is a Washington state researcher who began his quest for the truth when a local family shared their sighting of a Sasquatch while on a hike. His research led him to interaction with highly metaphysical and mysterious beings who live as one with nature, otherwise known as sasquatch. He also discovered the connection of interaction with the UFO phenomena and what may be a decades-old mission of reveal to the human race that they exist. The Sasquatch beings have guided Russell to esoteric information, much of it already available in the public domain. This information has shown him that ETs have been here for a long time and have subtle influence over our destiny as humans. They have also interacted with and guided others during this process. They have revealed that they utilize portals for traversing vast distances. These portals have a schedule and are located near vortex fields. Russell was also shown that they can manipulate these lines of electromagnetic power. This journey is told in his book, “Sasquatch-the Shaman of the Woods”. North American settlers started reporting sightings during the late 1800s and into the 1900s with the occasional finding of footprints, sporadic encounters and even a few grainy photos and videos adding to the mystery. Those who claim to have seen Bigfoot have described everything from a large, upright ape to an actual hairy human, sometimes standing over eight feet tall and described as powerfully built. The debate and research continue. Entire organizations exist to study and document Bigfoot and prove its existence and groups regularly search the Northwest woods, looking for that ultimate proof. Bigfoot, also commonly referred to as Sasquatch, is a large and hairy human-like mythical creature alleged by some to inhabit forests in North America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Bigfoot is featured in both American and Canadian folklore, and since the mid-20th century has grown into a cultural icon, permeating popular culture and becoming the subject of its own distinct subculture. In 2019, the FBI released its four-decade-old file on Bigfoot including an analysis conducted on hair that allegedly belonged to the sasquatch. The results? Deer hair. Legends of large, ape-like beasts can be found all over the world. Since the 1950s, the U.S. version has been "Bigfoot," a tall, hairy humanlike creature believed by some people to dwell in forests of the American Northwest. #saquatchchronicles #bigfootwitness #bigfoot #sasquatch #expeditionbigfoot #bigfootencounters #sasquatch_01 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

IN THIS EPISODE: When you think of monsters in America, you probably think of Bigfoot in the American Northwest – or perhaps the Chupacabra in the South. Well, if you ever got tired of listening to me, talk. Today's the day when you just get to hear from my buddy, Chris Young, because I wound him up and clicked go, and he just talks, and it's great. He has so much, interesting experience and amazing insights. So Chris Young, if you don't know, I met him back when we started the Intellectual Ventures Lab, because he was the guy that Nathan Myhrvold hired to start the cooking projects. We built an experimental kitchen there. Chris ran the project called Modernist Cuisine. Which ended up publishing a 2,400 page cookbook on the science of cooking. That won every award in the world. It's literally a monument to modernist cooking. And these are new techniques for chefs and we talk about that a bunch today. Before that Chris had created the experimental lab at the Fat Duck and that's Heston Blumenthal's restaurant outside of London. Usually considered, if not the best restaurant on Earth, a contender. Since publishing Modernist Cuisine, Chris started a company called ChefSteps to popularize sous vide, which is the most successful of the techniques so far invented by modernists. You have to learn to sous vide. It's super easy. You can make everything you do come out perfectly. After selling that company to Breville, Chris started a new company called Combustion and Combustion is really cool startup. There's lots of lessons in here for entrepreneurs and folks who are making products. Chris is an amazing entrepreneur, very dedicated, really good at figuring out how to make everything work. Combustion is a difficult company to do because it's hardware and software; and it's in the kitchen; and it is hundreds of degrees, Fahrenheit. So it was just a lot to deal with. It's great to learn these lessons and they're shipping now and very successful with it. And then Chris has a YouTube channel called Chris Young Cooks, where he's doing some of the cool stuff that we used to do on Modernist Cuisine. Cool photography, but doing it for video and sharing some of the insights that they have about cooking. So anyway, You're going to have a blast listening to Chris. Important Links Intellectual Ventures Lab Modernist Cuisine The Fat Duck Combustion Chris Young Cooks About Chris Young Chris Young is a chef-scientist known for applying science and technology to create culinary experiences that earlier generations would never have imagined. Before becoming a chef, Young completed degrees in mathematics and biochemistry at the University of Washington. Unfulfilled with a life in the hard sciences, Young left his doctoral work behind for a job as a chef at one of Seattle's top-rated restaurants, Mistral. Young's expertise wasn't long secluded to the American Northwest. From 2003 to 2007, Young worked with the world-famous chef Heston Blumenthal to oversee development of some of his most innovative dishes. In 2004, Young opened The Fat Duck Experimental Kitchen, leading a team of more than six full-time chefs and coordinating the work of several consulting scientists. Beyond developing new dishes for The Fat Duck's menu, Young was responsible for recipe development for the critically acclaimed first and second seasons of BBC's “In Search of Perfection: With Heston Blumenthal.” In 2007, Young was asked by the renowned technologist, inventor, and accomplished cook Nathan Myhrvold to return to Seattle to work at Intellectual Ventures. Alongside Myrhvold, Young helped research, experiment, and eventually coauthor the eagerly anticipated, industry game-changing Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking. In 2012, along with Modernist Cuisine colleagues Chef Grant Lee Crilly and photographer Ryan Matthew Smith, Young co-launched an online-based culinary school ChefSteps, using an underground space beneath Seattle's Pike Place Market. Their mission: teaching people how to utilize modern techniques in their cooking. He is the founder and owner at Combustion Inc., a company that builds nice things that make cooking more enjoyable. Like a thermometer that's wireless, oven-safe, and uses machine learning to do what no other thermometer can: predict your food's cooking and resting times with uncanny accuracy.

Mark "Semi Colon" Scott drops into the studio from his home in Jasper National Park to talk trail (and more!) with Doc. The Canadian school teacher shares some stories from the backcountry, including some dicey situations out there with his better half, previous JFM Pod guest, Brigid "Scrambles" Scott. Tune in and hear about proper response technique for bear encounters, Zed Packs, C-Level water crossings, the Great Divide Trail, a LASH in the American Northwest, Shoulder Season, and the unusual naming technique for small Saskatchewan towns. For reference and explanation: "Shoulder season is the months between the peak season, usually during the summer months, and the offseason in the winter. In this case, the autumn months would be considered shoulder season." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/johnfreakinmuir/support

On Show 159, we are joined by Tobias Hahn and Nick Greiner, founders of the Rosenstadt Brewery. They tell us about their unusual approach to the business, what it's like to focus on German beer in the American Northwest, and how gemütlichkeit fits into all this.
Brewing, folk arts, circular time, fermentation, and revitalizing regenerative cultures.... we delve into the magic and complexity of brewing with herbalist, singer and folk artist Heather Wolf. About our conversation partner, Heather Wolf:Heather Wolf is an herbal brewess, folk herbalist, teacher, singer & performing artist from an island in the Salish Sea. Her work is devoted to reviving folk wisdom traditions, and a remembrance of our ancestral heritage and sacred relationships. With decades of study and craft of herbal brewing traditions, Heather most recently launched The Brewess Underground, a private brew club centering on dry herbal meads and botanical honey liqueurs, released on the Equinoxes and Solstices. Her herbal brews, including her honey-kombuchas, have been much beloved throughout the American Northwest. In addition to brewing, she is re-learning her own Sephardic Jewish & British Isles ancestral songlines and partaking in the revitalizing of folk traditions. She writes of folk traditions, "Folk wisdom is carried by the collective, belongs to the whole, is the vital foundation of every healthy culture. These arts relate us directly with our own beings, each other, and the sacred world from which our existence is emergent and interdependent."About this show:00-3:40 - Introductions and initial music 5:28 - How does brewing enable us to unwind in time?6:50 - What is inebriation?8:18 - What is mead?10:48 - What actually happens in fermentation?11:39 Heather's process of fermentation; thinking about alcohol 15:50: Culturing the culture23:41 How is time interfacing with the creation of a brew?28:40 Some revitalizations in our time32: 10 Brewing and circular time 50:38 Fairytale time45:00 Heather Wolf reading and singing the song, Old Growth Fairytale, that she co-created with Nicholas Moon and their band, Wild Revival 54:30 Brewing Brewess, and suggestions for your practiceRelevent links: Join our upcoming Circular Time courseFollow Sara Jolena and Sequoia SamanvayaSequoia Samanvaya's WebsiteSequoia Samanvaya's Instagram Sequoia Samanvaya's Facebook Sequoia Samanvaya's LinkedInSara Jolena's LinkedInHeather's website (which includes links to her music)Buy the song Old Growth Fairytale by Wild Revival:Follow Wild Revival on:Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/wildrevivalband/Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/wildrevivalbandSupport the showLearn more about Sara Jolena Wolcott and Sequoia SamanvayaMusic Title: Both of Us Music by: madiRFAN Don't forget to "like" and share this episode!

Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens ABOUT WESTWARD AMERICAN SINGLE MALT WHISKEY: Single Malt, reimagined. American whiskey, elevated. As the highest rated American Single Malt, Westward Whiskey began in 2004 with a vision: to make a distinctive American Single Malt inspired by the American Northwest and the culture, climate, and abundant natural resources that have earned the region such reverence and renown. From humble beginnings to its impressive footprint today, creating a bold, robust, and delicious American Single Malt has remained the team's true passion. Helmed by founders Thomas Mooney and Christian Krogstad, Westward is a trailblazer in the American craft spirits community, a leading voice for American Single Malt, and a co-founder of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission. Westward's flagship family of whiskeys, which have earned high praise around the world (two Double Gold medals, San Francisco World Spirits Competition), are available nationwide and in select international markets, include the original Westward American Single Malt, Westward American Single Malt Stout Cask, and Westward American Single Malt Pinot Noir Cask. For more information go to www.WestwardWhiskey.com and follow @westwardwhiskey on Facebook or Instagram. ABOUT MILES MUNROE: Miles Munroe serves as the lead distiller of Westward Whiskey. Miles manages the distilling production team and ensures that every bottle of Westward is made to perfection. His day-to-day responsibilities include spearheading all blending sessions and supervising Westward's rigorous quality controls by signing off on all whiskies before both barreling and bottling. He also oversees all operations within the Westward warehouse in Clackamas, the company's 28,000 square foot facility that maintains an inventory of more than 3,000 barrels of aging whiskey at any given time. Miles joined Westward Whiskey in 2013 to increase production of the company's American Single Malt. He began as the company's only production distiller, making up to two barrels per week. Today, Miles manages a team of six distillers who collectively produce 25 barrels per week. Miles played an integral role in optimizing spirits manufacturing at Westward's new distillery, a 13,000 square facility in Southeast Portland which opened in 2015 and expanded whiskey capacity six-fold. During the planning and build- out process, Miles served as a critical distilling consultant, determining equipment needs, designing the work flow, and calculating capacity for product. Miles' aptitude for taste plays a key role in ensuring quality while also sparking his creativity. After developing a custom flavor wheel for Westward to properly define its profile, he was inspired by his brewing experience to incorporate stout beer into a cask finish, which naturally paired well with Westward's signature characteristics. This resulted in the brand's first-ever stout cask finish, a four-year aged Westward resting for eight months in an Imperial Stout barrel that will launch later this year. As all of the company's distillers do, Miles came to Westward with a background in brewing. He attended the American Brewers Guild and graduated from the institute's Science & Engineering of Brewing program before spending several years as a brewer in Portland, OR. It was during his time studying sensory analysis that he realized his talent for taste and flavor identification, a skill that has brought him to achieve great success as brewer and later a whiskey blender. Over the course of his career, he worked for Bridgeport Brewing, Lompoc Brewing, and Migration Brewing, all while focusing on his end goal of becoming a whiskey distiller. John "Liver-Eating" Johnston was one of the "mountain men" who explored the American Northwest in the mid to late 1800s. Like the other "mountain men," Liver-Eating Johnston had his fair share of battles with the Native Americans who were defending their land. Unlike the other "mountain men," Johnston supposedly ate the livers of hundreds of natives he had killed. It was only recently that we learned this wasn't exactly true, but in Johnston's case, the truth might just be more horrifying than the fiction.Sources:The Anaconda Standard, February 11, 1900. The move comes as the American Northwest and Canada suffer from an historic heatwave. President Biden says the threat of wildfires in western states is as severe as it's ever been and instead of being seasonal it's now a year-round problem. Also on the programme: Sudan, two years on from the revolution; and why Wimbledon's grass courts seem more slippery this year (Picture:A man cools off at a misting station during the scorching weather of a heatwave in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada June 27, 2021. The medical missionary Marcus Whitman is the martyr hero of one of the great legends of the American Northwest. Unfortunately the story behind the legend, a cross-country trip to the White House to save Oregon from a British takeover was almost entirely untrue. Author Blaine Harden's new book, Murder at the Mission: A Frontier Killing, Its legacy of lies and The Taking of the American West replaces the legend -- made up by Dr. Whitman's life-long rival and enemy -- with the facts.

Important Events May 25, 1803 Today is the birthday of the American transcendentalist, essayist, philosopher, and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph Waldo Emerson was a son of Boston. By the time he finished his schooling at Harvard, he had decided to go by his middle name, Waldo. He was his class poet, and he wrote an original poem for his graduation. Six years later, on Christmas Day, he would meet his first wife, Ellen. Two years later, he lost her to tuberculosis. Her death eventually made him a wealthy man — although he had to sue his inlaws to acquire the inheritance. Deeply grieved after losing Ellen, Waldo eventually traveled to Europe, where he visited the Royal Botanical Garden in Paris. The experience was a revelation to him. At the Paris Garden, Waldo sees plants organized according to Jussieu's system of classification. Suddenly he can see connections between different species. The American historian and biographer. Robert D. Richardson wrote, "Emerson's moment of insight into the interconnectedness of things in the Jardin des Plantes was a moment of almost visionary intensity that pointed him away from theology and toward science". Upon his return to the states, Waldo befriended other forward thinkers and writers of his time: William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Thomas Carlyle. In 1835, Waldo married his second wife, Lydia Jackson. Waldo changed her name from Lydia to Lidian, and he calls her by other names like Queenie and Asia. She always calls him “Mr. Emerson.” Around this time, Waldo began to think differently about the world and his perspective on life. Waldo was also the son of a minister, which makes his move away from religion and societal beliefs all the more impressive. By 1836, Waldo published his philosophy of transcendentalism in an essay he titled "Nature." He wrote: "Nature is a language and every new fact one learns is a new word; but it is not a language taken to pieces and dead in the dictionary, but the language put together into a most significant and universal sense. I wish to learn this language, not that I may know a new grammar, but that I may read the great book that is written in that tongue." The next year, Waldo gave a speech called "The American Scholar." It so moved Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. that he called Waldo’s oration text America's "intellectual Declaration of Independence." After his Nature essay, Waldo befriended Henry David Thoreau. In late September of 1838, the Salem Massachusetts Unitarian minister and American botanist John Lewis Russell visited Waldo, and they spent some time botanizing together. Waldo wrote about the visit in his journal: "A good woodland day or two with John Lewis Russell who came here, & showed me mushrooms, lichens, & mosses. A man in whose mind things stand in the order of cause & effect & not in the order of a shop or even of a cabinet." In 1855, when Walt Whitman published his Leaves of Grass, he sent a copy to Emerson. Waldo sent Whitman a five-page letter of praise. With Emerson’s support, Whitman issues a second edition that, unbeknownst to Waldo, quoted a passage from his letter that was printed in gold leaf on the cover, "I Greet You at the Beginning of a Great Career." Waldo was displeased by this; he had wanted the letter to remain private. In the twilight of his life, the man who once advised, “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience,” Ralph Waldo Emerson was invited to join a group of nine intellectuals on a camping trip in the Adirondacks. The goal was simple: to connect with nature. The experience included Harvard’s naturalist Louis Agassiz, the great botanist James Russell Lowell, and the American naturalist Jeffries Wyman. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote, "The landscape belongs to the person who looks at it." "Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year." And “The Earth laughs in flowers.” Finally, here’s a little prayer Waldo wrote - giving thanks for the gifts of nature. “For flowers that bloom about our feet; For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet; For song of bird, and hum of bee; For all things fair we hear or see, Father in heaven, we thank Thee!” May 25, 1949 Today is the birthday of the Antiguan-American novelist, essayist, and short-story writer Jamaica Kincaid born Elaine Potter Richardson. Jamaica Kincaid is a gardener and popular garden writer. Her book Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalaya offers many wonderful excerpts. And here, she discusses the dreams of gardeners - and how they form from our desire and curiosity. She writes, “Something that never escapes me as I putter about the garden, physically and mentally: desire and curiosity inform the inevitable boundaries of the garden, and boundaries, especially when they are an outgrowth of something as profound as the garden with all its holy restrictions and admonitions, must be violated.” Jamaica’s book My Garden offers an intimate look at her relationship with her garden. She writes, "I shall never have the garden I have in my mind, but that for me is the joy of it; certain things can never be realized and so all the more reason to attempt them." Here she talks about time and the destruction of a garden: “In a way, a garden is the most useless of creations, the most slippery of creations: it is not like a painting or a piece of sculpture—it won’t accrue value as time goes on. Time is its enemy’ time passing is merely the countdown for the parting between garden and gardener.” "The garden has taught me to live, to appreciate the times when things are fallow and when they're not." She also wrote, “I love planting. I love digging holes, putting plants in, tapping them in. And I love weeding, but I don’t like tidying up the garden afterwards.” During the pandemic in August of 2020, Jamaica wrote an essay for the New Yorker called, The Disturbances of the Garden. She wrote about learning to garden from her mother: “My mother was a gardener, and in her garden it was as if Vertumnus and Pomona had become one: she would find something growing in the wilds of her native island (Dominica) or the island on which she lived and gave birth to me (Antigua), and if it pleased her, or if it was in fruit and the taste of the fruit delighted her, she took a cutting of it (really she just broke off a shoot with her bare hands) or the seed (separating it from its pulpy substance and collecting it in her beautiful pink mouth) and brought it into her own garden and tended to it in a careless, everyday way, as if it were in the wild forest, or in the garden of a regal palace. The woods: The garden. For her, the wild and the cultivated were equal and yet separate, together and apart.” Later she writes about her own relationship with the garden. “But where is the garden and where am I in it? This memory of growing things, anything, outside not inside, remained in my memory… in New York City in particular, I planted: marigolds, portulaca, herbs for cooking, petunias, and other things that were familiar to me, all reminding me of my mother, the place I came from. Those first plants were in pots and lived on the roof of a diner that served only breakfast and lunch, in a dilapidated building at 284 Hudson Street, whose ownership was uncertain, which is the fate of us all. Ownership of ourselves and of the ground on which we walk, ...and ownership of the vegetable kingdom are all uncertain, too. Nevertheless, in the garden, we perform the act of possessing. To name is to possess…” “I began to refer to plants by their Latin names, and this so irritated my editor at this magazine (Veronica Geng) that she made me promise that I would never learn the Latin name of another plant. I loved her very much, and so I promised that I would never do such a thing, but I did continue to learn the Latin names of plants and never told her. Betrayal, another feature of any garden.” Unearthed Words After Nicholas hung up the phone, he watched his mother carry buckets and garden tools across the couch grass toward a bed that would, come spring, be brightly ablaze as tropical coral with colorful arctotis, impatiens, and petunias. Katherine dug with hard chopping strokes, pulling out wandering jew and oxalis, tossing the uprooted weeds into a black pot beside her. The garden will be beautiful, he thought. But how do the weeds feel about it? Sacrifices must be made. ― Stephen M. Irwin, Australian screenwriter, producer, and novelist, The Dead Path Grow That Garden Library Plant Identification Terminology by James G. Harrison This book came out in 2001, and the subtitle is An Illustrated Glossary. Well, to me, this book is an oldie, but goodie; I first bought my copy of this book back in 2013. This book aims to help you understand the terms used in plant identification, keys, and descriptions - and it also provides definitions for almost 3,000 words. Now, if you're looking to improve your grasp of plant identification terminology, this book will be an invaluable reference. And just as a heads up. there are around 30 used copies that are reasonably priced on Amazon. But of course, they're not going to last forever, so if you're interested in this book, don't wait to get a copy. (After those used copies are gone, then the next lowest price is around $200.) This book is 216 pages of exactly what it says it is: plant identification, terminology - and I should mention that there are also helpful illustrations. You can get a copy of Plant Identification Terminology by James G. Harrison and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $12 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart May 25, 1908 Today is the birthday of the Michigan-born poet, gardener, and the 1954 Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry, Theodore Roethke (“RETH-key”). Ted wrote about nature and the American Northwest. He enjoyed focusing on “the little things in life.” His father was a gardener, a greenhouse grower, a rose-lover, and a drinker. As a result, many of Ted’s pieces are about new life springing from rot and decay. His best poem is often considered to be “The Rose.” The poem reminded him of his father, and he could barely speak the poem without crying. Today, garden signs and social media posts quote Ted’s verse, “Deep in their roots all flowers keep the light.” Ted battled bipolar depression most of his life, and his darkness can be seen in his poem called The Geranium. When I put her out, once, by the garbage pail, She looked so limp and bedraggled, So foolish and trusting, like a sick poodle, Or a wizened aster in late September, I brought her back in again For a new routine - Vitamins, water, and whatever Sustenance seemed sensible At the time: she'd lived So long on gin, bobbie pins, half-smoked cigars, dead beer, Her shriveled petals falling On the faded carpet, the stale Steak grease stuck to her fuzzy leaves. (Dried-out, she creaked like a tulip.) The things she endured!- The dumb dames shrieking half the night Or the two of us, alone, both seedy, Me breathing booze at her, She leaning out of her pot toward the window. Near the end, she seemed almost to hear me- And that was scary- So when that snuffling cretin of a maid Threw her, pot and all, into the trash-can,I said nothing. But I sacked the presumptuous hag the next week, I was that lonely. A sunnier and more tender poem was called Transplanting. Ted wrote the poem from the perspective of "a very small child: all interior drama; no comment; no interpretation.” Watching hands transplanting, Turning and tamping, Lifting the young plants with two fingers, Sifting in a palm-full of fresh loam,-- One swift movement,-- Then plumping in the bunched roots, A single twist of the thumbs, a tamping, and turning, All in one, Quick on the wooden bench, A shaking down, while the stem stays straight, Once, twice, and a faint third thump,-- Into the flat-box, it goes, Ready for the long days under the sloped glass: The sun warming the fine loam, The young horns winding and unwinding, Creaking their thin spines, The underleaves, the smallest buds Breaking into nakedness, The blossoms extending Out into the sweet air, The whole flower extending outward, Stretching and reaching. Theodore Roethke died in 1963. He was visiting friends on Bainbridge Island. One afternoon he was fixing mint juleps by the pool. The friends went to the main house to get something. When they returned, three perfect mint juleps sat on a table by the edge of the pool, and Ted was floating face down in the water. He’d suffered a brain aneurysm. After his death, the family honored their friend by filling in the pool. They installed a beautiful zen garden in the pool's footprint that is framed by conifers and features raked sand and a handful of moss-covered stones. There is no plaque. Today, we’ll end the podcast with Theodore’s ode to spring - called Vernal Sentiment. Though the crocuses poke up their heads in the usual places, The frog scum appear on the pond with the same froth of green, And boys moon at girls with last year's fatuous faces, I never am bored, however familiar the scene. When from under the barn the cat brings a similar litter,— Two yellow and black, and one that looks in between,— Though it all happened before, I cannot grow bitter: I rejoice in the spring, as though no spring ever had been. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
In this episode, Barry sits down with Susan Myers of WINGS Birding Tours Worldwide. She has been birding, traveling, and leading tours in Asia for over thirty years, and has written dozens of papers and articles on ornithology and general ecology in a variety of respected magazines, scientific journals, and books. Susan is the author of the Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo, published in 2016, and has recently finished a general guide to the wildlife of Southeast Asia. Listen in as Susan shares her experience and knowledge of the natural world. Her deep affection for and appreciation for Asia and its wildlife is palpable in today's conversation. She dives deep into how she conducts a typical birding tour in Asia and her personal thoughts on what makes a great guide and leader. Susan touches on her decades-long career as a naturalist, must-see birds in Asia and the American Northwest, and her favorite places to travel. Finally, Susan shares what she is most looking forward to when she can jump back into the field post-COVID. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: ● [2:57] How Susan became a naturalist and got started guiding bird watch tours ● [6:46] Susan's favorite destination in Asia ● [8:55] Susan takes us through one of her typical tours ● [12:27] How many birds you can expect to see during one of Susan's tours in Borneo ● [15:02] Where Susan finds inspiration as a leader ● [16:31] Susan speaks on the camaraderie among the guides at WINGS ● [17:07] The unique intimacy of a birding tour ● [22:21] How many birds has Susan seen in her lifetime? ● [24:59] Documenting birds on research trips ● [27:02] Possible reasons for the huge decline in migratory birds in the past few months ● [29:05] Susan's favorite stories from one of her trips ● [31:17] Susan's go-to places in Japan ● [32:23] Tips for amateur bird watchers ● [34:22] Hard-to-find birds in the U.S. ● [37:12] What Susan has been working on ever since the pandemic halted her tours ● [39:44] What Susan misses about leading birding tours Key Quotes by Susan:● “One of the things you've got to know about birding is that the mornings are really important. That old adage really is true: ‘The early bird catches the worm.' In this case, ‘The early birder catches the bird.'”● “Birding requires patience, full stop, whether you're talking about the birds or other birders. It should be mutual—hopefully the clients are patient with me because sometimes it's frustrating when you can't find the bird you're looking to show them.”● “The most important thing for people who want to come on a birding tour is to have a good pair of binoculars. Very occasionally, we've had people come on tours with a cheap pair of binoculars. It's a bit crazy because you're spending a lot of money on this tour but you're not spending money on the equipment you need to enjoy the trip. You wouldn't go snorkeling without a mask; you don't go birding without binoculars.”● “One of the blessings of being a naturalist is that you will never be bored. Not in your whole life will you ever be bored. It doesn't matter where you are; there will be some sort of critter that is going to give you hours of fascination and keep you busy.”Links:Wings Bird Tours Susan Myers ProfileSusan's Links Birds of Borneo - Susan MyerseBird - Cornell University Waxwings (Songs and photos) Sounds of the Bornean Jungle Our sponsor:The Ready State

In this episode Raya, Treava Champagne and Lynn will discuss the book/movie The Shack. (Please keep in mind that many details are discussed and therefore spoilers are inevitable) Publishers Summary: The novel is set in the American Northwest. The main character is Mackenzie Allen Phillips, a father of five called "Mack" by his family and friends. Four years prior to the main events of the story, Mack takes three of his children on a camping trip to Wallowa Lake near Joseph, Oregon, stopping at Multnomah Falls on the way. Two of his children are playing in a canoe when it flips and almost drowns Mack's son. Mack is able to save his son by rushing to the water and freeing him from the canoe's webbing but unintentionally leaves his youngest daughter Missy alone at their campsite. After Mack returns, he sees that Missy is missing. The police are called, and the family discovers that Missy has been abducted and murdered by a serial killer known as the "Little Ladykiller". The police find an abandoned shack in the woods where Missy was taken. Her bloodied clothing is found, but her body is not located. Mack's life sinks into what he calls "The Great Sadness". As the novel begins, Mack receives a note in his mailbox from "Papa", saying that he would like to meet with Mack that coming weekend at the shack. Mack is puzzled by the note—he has had no relationship with his abusive father since he left home at age 13. He suspects that the note may be from God whom his wife Nan refers to as "Papa". Mack's family leaves to visit relatives and he goes alone to the shack, unsure of what he will see there. He arrives and initially finds nothing, but as he is leaving, the shack and its surroundings are supernaturally transformed into a lush and inviting scene. He enters the shack and encounters manifestations of the three persons of the Trinity. God the Father takes the form of an African American woman who calls herself Elousia and Papa; Jesus is a Middle Eastern carpenter; and the Holy Spirit physically manifests as an Asian woman named Sarayu. The bulk of the book narrates Mack's conversations with Papa, Jesus, and Sarayu as he comes to terms with Missy's death and his relationship with the three of them. Mack also has various experiences with each of them. Mack walks across a lake with Jesus, sees an image of his (Earthly) father in Heaven with Sarayu, and has a conversation with Sophia, the personification of God's wisdom. At the end of his visit, Mack goes on a hike with Papa, now appearing as an older Native American male, who shows him where Missy's body was left in a cave. After spending the weekend at the shack, Mack leaves and is so preoccupied with his thoughts that he is nearly killed in an automobile accident. After his recovery, he realizes that he did not in fact spend the weekend at the shack, but that his accident occurred on the same day that he arrived at the shack. He also leads the police to the cave that Papa revealed, and they find Missy's body still lying there.

June 6, 2016 - Today, our time machine heads back to our show's past, serving up a special, all-new paperback interview with a familiar voice. Back in August of 2015, we kicked off the show with the words, "Three mules, two brothers, and a Jack Russell terrier named Olive Oyl." Our guest was Rinker Buck, and his book -- The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey -- recounted the trek he made with his brother Nick in a covered wagon, two thousand miles from Missouri to the great American Northwest. In the months since hitting shelves, The Oregon Trail has wended its way up the New York Times best-seller list to #1, and Amazon.com named it the best non-fiction book of 2015. When completing the first mule-powered crossing of this legendary pioneer trail in over a century, Rinker met a lot of people -- and he met them, in a new light, after they'd had a chance to see the enthusiastic response to how he shared their story. With the paperback edition of The Oregon Trail appearing in bookstores June 7, 2016, we thought, why not bring Rinker back to hear about his experiences on the tour following publication. After all, he only set out to write a book. But his pen sparked a national phenomenon, which you can share by visiting Facebook.com/RinkerBuck. Other books discussed on this episode include: Flight of Passage, by Rinker Buck. The Road from Coorain, by Jill Ker Conway. A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, by Norman Maclean. Young Men and Fire, by Norman Maclean. Angela's Ashes, by Frank McCourt. America Revised, by Francis FitzGerald. Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, by James W. Loewen. Also, we mentioned William L. Shirer's five books on Nazi Germany.
A biotech startup has received permission to begin trials with patients who have been declared clinically dead from a traumatic brain injury, to test whether parts of their central nervous system can be brought back to life. August 10, 2015 - Three mules, two brothers, and a Jack Russell terrier. Together they rattle 2000 miles from Missouri to the great American Northwest in a covered wagon. That isn't the setup for a Vaudeville joke, but there are plenty of laughs found on the ruts, roads and interstates. That's right, interstates. The trip doesn't take place before the Civil War, but in our time. We can go along for the ride from the comfort of our reading chairs thanks to author Rinker Buck's New York Times best-seller: The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey. It's the first such crossing in a century, which meant our unlikely group of pioneers had to reinvent the lost art of wagon travel along the way. Mr. Buck grew up on the family farm in historic Morristown, New Jersey, and attended Bowdoin College in Maine. His career in journalism earned him the Eugene S. Pulliam Journalism Writing Award and other accolades. In his 1997 book, Flight of Passage, he shared another adventure: Piloting a Piper PA-11 across the United States in 1966. Just 15 at the time, he became the youngest airmen ever to complete the trip. You can follow his continuing adventures by liking him at Facebook.com/RinkerBuck.
