On this week's episode of Bikinis After Babies, we are coming to you with some of our insight into competition prep from our perspective both as coaches and competitors ourselves! One subject that often comes up is the process of changing body composition and the argument that fat loss is harder than muscle gain…or vice versa. In this episode we dive deep into this debate and discuss the following key points:Is the challenge physical or psychological? Is “weight loss” being confused with actual fat loss? Are women underestimating how long muscle building truly takes?Does social media distort expectations for both?Is maintenance actually the hardest phase of all? Many of our clients are starting prep and the countdown is both thrilling and nerve-wracking! Every check-in is a reminder of how much work lies ahead. We hope the concepts and strategies discussed in this episode help motivate and inspire you, wherever you're at on your fitness journey, to put in the work, day in and day out…..the work is WORTH IT! We hope that you enjoyed this episode and if so, we would LOVE it if you would rate, subscribe, and leave us reviews on how this podcast has helped you

I know what it feels like to have a "productive" day that somehow leaves you completely disconnected from yourself. You made every meeting, answered every email, handled every priority, and then realized your own health never made it onto the calendar. That is the part of ambition we do not talk about enough. This conversation is for the women who are excellent at showing up for everyone else, but keep canceling on themselves. If you are trying to grow your career, lead well, avoid burnout, and still feel like a person outside of your job, this one will hit. Inside this episode • Why high-achieving women often put health last • How to treat your wellness like a real calendar priority • Why self-care does not mean you are less committed at work • The four wellness pillars Shannon uses with busy professionals • How discipline at work can translate into better health habits • Why fulfillment matters when you are redefining success Play the Career Game On Your Terms: https://stan.store/thatcareercoach/p/3-months-of-group-coaching Connect with Dr. Shannon Burge: Website: www.nodefeat.co Instagram: @shannon_burge Nonprofit: www.nodefeatwarrior.com
Celeste interviewed Kyla Dickerson, an IFBB fit model pro, coach, and posing specialist who has competed in 28 marathons and is redefining strength and confidence for women over 40 in bodybuilding. Kyla shared how her late mother instilled visualization techniques in her at a young age, including a specific example of learning to do a back dive, which became a foundation for her approach to achieving goals. The conversation touched on Kyla's pre-competition rituals and her mother's belief in visualization and manifestation, which Kyla described as key to her success across various endeavors including marathons and pageants. Personal Philosophy and Career Support Kyla shared her personal philosophy of staying true to herself regardless of her surroundings, inspired by her mother's advice to "live like it's your last day." She discussed how her husband supports her career as an athlete and IPV fitness model, with him encouraging her to focus on helping women over 40 feel better in their bodies and minds. Kyla expressed gratitude for her husband's support and mentioned her regret about not taking a photo with him after receiving her pro card at her first competition. Kyla's First Pro Show Victory Kyla shared her experience winning her first pro show, describing the challenging journey to Pittsburgh Nationals where she faced multiple obstacles including weather delays, flight changes, and her husband getting sick. Despite these difficulties, Kyla and a fellow competitor who was also traveling to the show managed to find accommodations and workout facilities. When Kyla won the pro card, she was genuinely surprised as she had been discouraged by her previous bikini competition experiences and had initially planned not to compete at all that year. Fit Model Competition Experience Kyla shared her experience competing in her first professional fit model show, where she placed 5th in the Masters division. She discussed the unique aspects of fit model competitions, including the unpredictability of placements and the opportunity to connect with other competitors. Kyla expressed her preference for competing in the Masters category and shared feedback about her performance, including suggestions for improvement. She also mentioned plans to discuss concerns about the treatment of the Masters division compared to Open division on a podcast. Masters vs Open Division Disparities Kyla expressed concerns about discrepancies in prize money and placement recognition between Masters and Open divisions at a competition. She noted that Masters competitors were not charged to compete but questioned why they received different treatment in terms of prize money and placement recognition compared to Open competitors. Kyla emphasized the need for equal treatment between divisions, particularly highlighting the challenges faced by older competitors in the Masters division. Physique Competition Division Strategies Kyla and Celeste discussed the challenges and strategies in competitive physique shows, particularly focusing on the differences between the Masters and Open divisions. They explored how placement in one division might affect competitors' performance in the other, with Celeste suggesting that going first in the Open division could be advantageous. Kyla emphasized the importance of not letting placement define an athlete's future in the sport and highlighted the success of pro show winners who embody the fit model look. The conversation also touched on the inspiring presence of older competitors and Kyla's mission to empower women over 40 through her achievements and story of discipline in the sport. Coaching for Women Over 40 Kyla discussed her coaching approach for women over 40, emphasizing that sustainable transformation is possible without extreme measures. She shared personal experiences with body dysmorphia and how running helped her cope with challenges in her first marriage and her mother's illness. Kyla explained that her motivation in bodybuilding comes from wanting her mother to have experienced the joy of fitness, as her mother was unable to participate due to health issues. Mother's Inspiration in Fitness Career Kyla shared how her late mother Darla inspired her fitness career, particularly after her mother's passing when Kyla became a group fitness instructor. She described how her mother's resilience during her final illness, including continuing to find joy despite severe pain and broken bones, motivated Kyla to push through her own challenges during marathon training. Kyla emphasized the importance of cherishing time with loved ones and not taking moments together for granted. Loss and Memory Preservation Discussion Celeste and Kyla discussed their experiences with loss and how they carry their loved ones' memories forward. Kyla shared how she connects with her mother and brother through meaningful symbols and experiences, including the significance of the number 444. They also discussed Kyla's role as a group fitness manager at a Lifetime gym in La Jolla, where she has developed strong connections with her long-standing class participants. The conversation ended with Celeste preparing to ask Kyla about challenges faced by women over 40, though this portion of the discussion was not included in the transcript segment provided. Women's Fitness Coaching Challenges Kyla discussed the challenges of coaching women on fitness journeys, particularly around redefining goals beyond just weight loss and addressing misconceptions about nutrition, especially for women over 40 who may have experienced the low-carb era. She emphasized the importance of accountability and long-term commitment in fitness coaching, noting that many clients need guidance to focus on sustainable practices rather than quick fixes. Kyla highlighted that while supplements and modern tools exist, they cannot replace the fundamentals of proper eating and training, and she stays focused on helping clients build consistent habits and maintain patience through the challenging process. Miss Utah's Fear Factor Experience Celeste interviewed Kyla, who shared her experience as Miss Utah 2004 and participating in a Miss U.S.A. edition of Fear Factor. Kyla described her challenging experience on the show, including a difficult ocean platform challenge that led to her being the first contestant eliminated. She provided advice for aspiring competitors, emphasizing the importance of getting a coach immediately and not underestimating the preparation time required. Kyla also shared insights for pro competitors, stressing the need for confidence and strong posing on stage. The conversation concluded with Kyla sharing her contact information for those interested in working with her as a coach or trainer. Wendy Fortino is an eight-time Olympia figure competitor, former elite track athlete, media host, and fitness professional whose career bridges high-performance athletics, bodybuilding, science, and storytelling. With degrees in exercise science and a master's in exercise physiology, her background combines academic rigor with real-world experience at the highest levels of physique competition and performance media.Long before stepping onto bodybuilding stages, Wendy's identity was built through athletics. A gifted middle-distance runner with a gymnastics background, she dedicated her life to track and field and was training for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 800 metres when a stress fracture abruptly halted her pursuit. What initially felt like devastation became a turning point. Introduced to bodybuilding through friends, she entered her first figure competition almost by accident — and won the overall title. What followed was a complete reinvention: national titles, an IFBB pro card, and eight Olympia appearances. Yet what truly drove her was not early success, but adversity. The first major loss in bodybuilding became the catalyst that hooked her deeper into the process. Her philosophy is clear: champions are forged through setbacks, challenge, and the willingness to step into difficult environments where growth is possible.Throughout the conversation, Wendy speaks openly about identity, resilience, and the psychology behind performance. She reflects on the pressures women face in physique sports, particularly the tendency to tie self-worth to appearance or stage results. Coming from an athletic background gave her a different perspective — one rooted in feedback, improvement, and resilience rather than validation. She emphasises that bodybuilding, at its best, is not simply about aesthetics, but about developing discipline, confidence, and self-respect. Health and longevity must remain the foundation. Wendy also discusses the evolution of bodybuilding itself, the balance between science and practical experience, and why true growth often comes from curiosity, creativity, and stepping outside rigid systems. Today, through her media work with Olympia TV, Muscle & Fitness, and numerous fitness brands, she focuses on telling deeper stories — revealing the person behind the public image and helping others understand what truly drives high performers.
Born and raised near Chicago, Illinois, Mel Chancey grew up in a Catholic household, even serving as an altar boy. But early in life, he found identity and belonging in motorcycle club culture. What began as camaraderie evolved into full immersion in the outlaw biker world. He became part of the Hell's Henchmen before the club patched over to the Hells Angels, quickly rising through the ranks due to his intensity, loyalty, and commanding leadership presence. At a young age, he was serving as a chapter president. In that world, brotherhood was everything. Life revolved around respect, territory, and reputation. Mel has spoken openly about the violent rivalries, bombings, turf wars, and constant hyper-vigilance required to survive. The bombing of their Chicago clubhouse marked a turning point, escalating tensions and deepening the cost of leadership. Power, ego, loyalty, and fear blurred moral lines — and carrying the weight of that conflict came with consequences. Eventually, Mel was arrested in a federal case tied to club activity and served years in prison under RICO-related charges. Prison became the defining turning point of his life. Stripped of his title, patch, and status, he describes hitting rock bottom in a quiet cell where self-examination became unavoidable. It was there that he returned to his Christian faith — praying, reading Scripture, and experiencing what he calls a true spiritual awakening. The identity once rooted in reputation and intimidation was replaced with surrender, humility, and conviction. Walking away from that life was not simple. It meant losing brotherhood, history, and everything familiar. Mel emphasizes that leaving was the hardest decision he ever made — and the strongest one. Today, he is a motivational speaker focused on faith, redemption, masculinity, and discipline. He is active in the bodybuilding community, affiliated with organizations such as IFBB and NPC, using physical training as a metaphor for rebuilding life through structure and accountability. Celeste Rains-Turk interviewed newly crowned IFBB Fit Model Pro Kayla Truluck about her unique journey from bikini competition to becoming one of the first ten IFBB fit model pros. The conversation explored Kayla's competition experiences, faith, career as a nurse practitioner, personal life, and her holistic approach to bodybuilding. Kayla shared insights on training adaptations for the fit model division, refeed strategies, mindset, faith practices, and balancing her competitive goals with her healthcare career and personal life. They also discussed her upcoming pro debut, community involvement, and encouragement for other competitors. Key Discussion Topics 1. Transition to Fit Model Division Kayla switched from bikini to fit model only 6–8 weeks before her show, prompted by her coach and curiosity about the new category. She stopped training shoulders to adapt her physique, found the posing moderately different, and achieved early success by winning the Peach Classic and earning her pro card at Junior Nationals. 2. Competition Experiences & Preparation Preparing for her pro debut at St. Pete Pro in June 2026, with Tampa Pro planned a month later. Prefers a slower, sustainable prep style emphasizing refeeds (5–6 to date). Refeeds consist mainly of chicken sandwiches and fries, controlled with familiar condiments, occasionally including a cookie. 3. Mindset, Nervousness & Stage Rituals Uses prayer and mental cues from her posing coach to stay grounded and calm on stage. Keeps a lighthearted, sociable attitude backstage to manage nerves. 4. Balancing Career & Fitness Works full-time as a nurse practitioner performing pre-employment and VA disability exams. Finds fulfillment in helping veterans and building patient relationships. Prefers maintaining a career outside fitness to avoid burnout and keep perspective. 5. Faith and Personal Growth Practices daily devotionals and Bible reading; participates in a yearly plan and weekly devotional with her husband. Faith helped her navigate divorce and rediscover strength and purpose before meeting her current husband. 6. Personal Life and Faith Journey Met her husband serendipitously on a Southwest flight; they connected instantly and view it as a "God moment." Reflected on redemption after a challenging first marriage, citing faith as central to her healing and renewed joy. 7. Community, Volunteering, & Work-Life Balance Volunteers teaching young children at church, finding joy and purpose in service despite exhaustion. Maintains early morning workout routines, structured meal prep, and quiet time for reflection. 8. Humor and Behind-the-Scenes Moments Shared lighthearted competition stories including nearly missing stage call due to "nervous poops" after coffee and waking up with tan handprints. Emphasized that competing "isn't glamorous behind the scenes." Key Takeaways & Advice For New Competitors: Join the bodybuilding community early and find a supportive, experienced coach. Learn about nutrition, posing, and training before stepping on stage. Approach the process with patience—don't rush competition readiness. For Those on the Road to Pro: Trust the process and your coach. Focus on personal growth, not just winning. Celebrate each phase, knowing success unfolds according to God's plan. On this week's episode of Bikinis After Babies we are joined by IFBB Bikini Pro Rachel Farganis- a wife, entrepreneur and mother of two. Rachel quickly became the talk of the bodybuilding world last summer when photos of her pro card win in an orthotic boot flooded Instagram!! Rachel shares the incredible story of how she broke her foot less than 2 weeks before North Americans and how she overcame this huge obstacle to achieve one of her greatest accomplishments- becoming an IFBB pro. Rachel didn't allow the injury to delay her show or break her mentally- she uniquely designed a foot brace that mimicked the height of her posing heel and adapted her posing around her new “show”. And Rachel didn't just show up- she won both her classes, an overall and took home two pro cards!!An inspiring and resilient athlete, Rachel encountered many challenges on her climb to the pro league and shares so many takeaways from her journey- from navigating the guilt that many mothers feel when carving out time for themselves, to battling years of self-doubt and an unhealthy relationship with staying “small”. Rachel's story is one of resilience, determination, and constantly learning what she's capable of, both as an athlete and as a mom. On this week's episode of Bikinis After Babies we are joined by NPC Bikini Athlete Courtney Daniel who is a wife, a mom of four boys, and an entrepreneur. Courtney began competing in 2018 when during her second season, she found a lump in her breast following prejudging- a discovery that led to a breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and multiple surgeries. Courtney stepped away from the stage to fight for her life, navigating the physical and emotional toll of cancer while raising four sons and supporting her family. But her story doesn't stop there. Once in remission, Courtney returned to training for the stage while managing chronic back injuries, herniated discs, and ongoing pain- fueled by a deep love for the “me vs. me” challenge of the sport and a passion that she shares with her husband, an IFBB Pro in Men's Classic Physique.Courtney's story is one of perseverance and resilience as we discuss overcoming adversity, cancer recovery, motherhood and how nutrition and strength training play a powerful role in protecting long-term health. Longevity has been on my mind a lot lately. This past weekend was the Arnold Classic. You look at those guys on the IFBB stage — absolutely massive human beings — and there's no denying the level of discipline and work that goes into that. But it also highlights something important: enhanced bodybuilding and natural bodybuilding are essentially two completely different sports. When people say “the highest level,” they're usually referring to the Mr. Olympia or Arnold stage. And sure, if you're competing in enhanced bodybuilding, that's the top of the mountain. But I'm not playing that sport. I'm competing in natural bodybuilding, and the highest level there is winning Worlds. Two totally different arenas, two totally different priorities. And when you start looking at it through the lens of longevity, things get even clearer.I had a client compete at the Arnold this weekend — Janis — who is 70 years old. Natural athlete. Keto. She went out there and broke world records in the squat, bench, deadlift, and total. At seventy years old. That, to me, is winning on a whole different level. Most people at 70 can barely carry groceries. They're using walkers and canes. Meanwhile she's pulling over 300 pounds off the floor and planning to keep doing it for as long as she possibly can. That's the kind of outcome I want to stack the chips in favor of.Because the question isn't just how high you can climb for a brief moment. The real question is how long you can perform at a high level.Natural bodybuilding, done properly, gives you that runway. When you prioritize nutrition, progressive overload, recovery, and discipline, you're building a system that supports your body for decades. You can keep improving year after year. You don't have to peak in your 20s and then watch everything fall apart.I plan on competing for a long time. I've got my sights set on winning Worlds in 2027, but whether that happens or not, the cool thing about natural bodybuilding is that you can keep showing up. You can keep getting better. You can keep pushing the needle forward. That's the long game.We also talked about some of the biggest mistakes people make with fat loss. The internet loves to throw around the advice “eat less, move more.” And technically, sure — that's not wrong. But practically speaking, it often misses the bigger picture.A lot of people who hit plateaus aren't eating too much. They're actually chronically under-eating. They're running on fumes, walking 30,000 steps a day, barely consuming a thousand calories, and wondering why their body refuses to drop more weight. At that point the metabolism is suppressed. Hormones are downregulated. Recovery is shot. That's why I'm such a big believer in structured building and cutting phases. When you spend time in a surplus and allow your metabolism to ramp up, you create more runway for fat loss later. When you finally drop calories, your body actually responds. You can't stay in a deficit forever. You have to play the long game — just like everything else. The Tribe is gearing up for a three-day fast, and we've got a bunch of conferences and travel coming up this year. Meatstock, Low Carb for Better Health, Hack Your Health — lots of opportunities to connect with the community and keep spreading the message. At the end of the day, everything comes back to the same principle. What can you do today to stack the chips in your favor so that you can operate at a high level for the longest possible time? That's the game I'm playing. And honestly, I think it's the only game worth playing.Greg Mahler is also a lifetime natural bodybuilder, and can be followed on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/ketogreg80/Register For My FREE Masterclass: https://www.ketobodybuilding.com/registration-2Get Keto Brick: https://www.ketobrick.com/Subscribe to the podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/42cjJssghqD01bdWBxRYEg?si=1XYKmPXmR4eKw2O9gGCEuQ

In this week's episode of Bikinis After Babies, we're joined by Brittni Shae, an IFBB Fit Model Pro who proves that it's never too late to pursue big goals in bodybuilding. After years in the Bikini Division, Brittni made the bold decision to transition into the new NPC Fit Model Division. In 2025, she earned her pro card at NPC Universe Championships in the Open Fit Model category, at age 41. Like many women in the bodybuilding community, she balances the demands of prep with real life: motherhood, marriage, entrepreneurship, and the constant work of showing up online to educate and inspire others. Coming out of a bodybuilding show can seriously mess with your head - and no one really prepares you for that part. If you've ever dealt with post show blues, rebound eating, loud food noise, or felt like your brain was still stuck in peak week even though the show is over, this episode is for you! I'm Diane - retired IFBB pro and longtime competitor coach and in this episode of Boss Bitch Radio, I'm breaking down what actually happens after a bodybuilding prep. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Most post-show plans focus on reverse macros, training, and cardio. What they miss is the identity crash, the control spiral, and the mental health fallout that so many women experience once the structure of prep disappears. If this hits home and you're ready to unwind prep brain and calm the food noise, you'll find a link in the show notes to book a clarity call and see if one-on-one coaching makes sense for you. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Alepotini_ifbbpro IGWhat happens when the life everyone admires isn't the life you want? We sit down with a Milan-based attorney and IFBB pro who's trading billables for barbells, unpacking the inner voice that won't quiet down, the pressure of prestige, and the daily signals of burnout that finally force a choice. Her path runs from military academy to Berkeley Law to a top international firm—and yet the gym became the place where she felt most herself. That contrast sets the stage for a candid, high-clarity conversation about meaning, mental health, and the courage to start over.We dig into why strength training can be a sanctuary, how good coaches translate fear into progress, and what it takes to guide beginners without intimidation. She breaks down the realities of working as a personal trainer in Italy—independent contractor setups, slow client acquisition, and lingering stigma about the profession—while making the case for evidence-based coaching that helps older adults protect muscle and young women embrace lifting without the “bulky” myth. Along the way, we talk programming, recovery, and the quiet discipline that keeps you moving when motivation fades. Then we open the black box of immigration: why moving to the United States to coach or compete isn't simple, what “exceptional ability” really means for visas, and how to build a credible, compounding profile through certifications, results, publishing, and community. We contrast social media highlights with the unglamorous grind—6 a.m. training, 12-hour office days, and small wins across time zones—that actually create change. If you're a woman over 40 trying to build muscle, burn fat, and not lose your mind in the process, this episode is for you. I'm breaking down the biggest takeaways from Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's interview with Thomas DeLauer - specifically her approach to body recomposition and what it really takes to grow muscle and lose fat at the same time. As an IFBB bodybuilding pro who's coached women for almost 20 years, I'm giving you my honest thoughts, what actually works in the real world, and where most women go wrong once hormones, aging, and metabolism shifts start kicking in! We're talking protein targets that actually make sense, how much you really need, what supplements are worth your time, and why creatine isn't scary. I'm also getting into resistance training basics, how many sets you actually need per muscle group, and what a realistic weekly training plan looks like if you're trying to change your body in your 40s, 50s, and beyond. If you want to build muscle, burn fat, stay healthy, and look hot doing it without drowning in misinformation, you're in the right place! You've been running on empty long enough.
