Welcome to Part III of the Odd Lots LIBOR series, in which Tracy Alloway and Joe Weisenthal take a look at life after LIBOR, the interest rate tied to more than $350 trillion worth of financial assets. SOFR is the Federal Reserve’s preferred replacement for LIBOR, but it’s not the only alternative reference rate around. On the third episode of the series, we speak with Richard Sandor, a serial innovator in financial markets, and the CEO at American Financial Exchange. He explains why he thinks his own proposed rate, called AMERIBOR, could be a suitable benchmark and replacement for Libor.

Mr. Giancarlo is also Senior Counsel to the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher and the former Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Mr. Giancarlo also served as a member of the Financial Stability Oversight Committee (FSOC), the President's Working Group on Financial Markets, and the Executive Board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). Mr. Giancarlo serves on the Advisory Board of the Chamber of Digital Commerce and as an independent director of the American Financial Exchange. He is also Chairman of the Board of Common Securitization Solutions, Inc. Under his leadership, the CFTC published primers on virtual currencies and smart contracts, oversaw the launch of the first bitcoin futures contracts and created LabCFTC as the agency's stakeholder in the digital evolution of derivatives trading markets. The conversation concludes with a side trip into Dr. Sandor’s passion for photography and his journey as a collector. Dr. Richard Sandor is Chairman and CEO of the American Financial Exchange (AFX). He is also the CEO of Environmental Financial Products, which specializes in inventing, designing and developing new financial markets. Dr. Sandor is currently the Aaron Director Lecturer in Law and Economics at the University of Chicago Law School and an Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong. He is the author of several books, including “Good Derivatives: A Story of Financial and Environmental Innovation,” and has received numerous honors for his work in environmental finance and carbon trading. He served on the boards of several exchanges, as well as philanthropic and not-for-profit organizations such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Clean Energy Trust. Dr. Sandor holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the City University of New York, Brooklyn College and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota.
