Professor of pyrogeography and fire science David Bowman says one of the most concerning aspects of these fires is that they haven't been easing overnight.
Scientists are warning the increasing number of bushfires around the world could make climate change worse and fire-management techniques need a 'rethink'. New research from the University of New South Wales and the University of Tasmania also suggests wildfires will become bigger and more extreme. University of Tasmania professor of pyrogeography and fire science David Bowman spoke to Corin Dann.
Dana and Tom discuss the sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, co-written by Arthur C. Clarke, starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester.Plot Summary: "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a visionary science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on a story co-written by Arthur C. Clarke. Released in 1968, the film is an epic exploration of human evolution, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial encounters. The story begins during prehistoric times when a mysterious black monolith appears to a group of primitive hominids, triggering a significant shift in their cognitive abilities. Millennia later, in the year 2001, a similar monolith is discovered on the Moon's surface, buried beneath the lunar soil. Upon excavation, the monolith emits a powerful radio signal towards Jupiter. In response to the signal, a manned mission is launched aboard the spacecraft Discovery One, led by Dr. David Bowman and Dr. Frank Poole, along with three other astronauts in hibernation. The onboard computer, HAL 9000, an advanced artificial intelligence system, assists the crew throughout their mission. As the spacecraft nears Jupiter, tensions arise as HAL begins to show signs of malfunction and unpredictable behavior. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/2001-a-space-odyssey-1968For the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios

LIBOR has been at the forefront of our attention since 2012, when it was revealed that financial institutions were manipulating the rate for their own gain. The UK Financial Conduct Authority is set to discontinue LIBOR by the end of 2021, and it's important we are ready for the transition. In this edition of the AFP Conversations Podcast, Tom Hunt, director of Treasury and Payments Services at AFP, speaks with David Bowman, senior associate director at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Bowman serves as the Board's senior staff liaison to the Alternative Reference Rates Committee. In this episode, Bowman provides an update on the status of the LIBOR transition, what needs to be done before year end, and advice for corporates approaching their banks about rate alternatives. This episode expresses personal opinions that do not necessarily reflect those of the Federal Reserve.

Have a movie recommendation?DM me on Instagram or Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcastEmail me: themoviecommentarypodcast@yahoo.comIn the history of cinema, there are certain films that come along that seemingly define their genre. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for spaghetti westerns, Ben-Hur for the epics, The Shining for horror films, and so many more, but no film defined its genre better than the 1968 Science-Fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The making of 2001 is almost as interesting as the movie itself. In 1964, legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick met best-selling science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke. Together, they started working on a story that was based on a previous short story that Clarke himself had written. In a very unique development process, Kubrick made the movie as Clark wrote the novel. Not only the writing process, but the filming of the movie itself was groundbreaking as well. Specialized sets had to be designed to give the illusion of being in space. Groundbreaking camera tricks were designed to help with the illusion. The special effects were the best of the time, and still somewhat hold up even today, including a special photography trick that gave us the most famous sequence in the movie. (Kubrick won his only Oscar for the effects on 2001) The story of 2001: A Space Odyssey is honestly too convoluted to be typed out in a few short paragraphs. It spans millions of years, beginning in the pre-man era of Earth all the way to the first year of the 21st century. There's feuding man-ape tribes. There's a space station and a moon-base. There's a mission to Jupiter. There's a malfunctioning (or not) computer. There's a bunch of stars. And in the middle of all of it, a big black rectangular monolith. How is all of this connected? Let's get right to it! Topic: Australia's bushfires: 2019 like nothing seen before As the bushfires in Australia this year extend across five million hectares, an area larger than many countries, stories of destruction have become depressingly familiar. So far 24 people and 460 million animals have been killed. In New South Wales (NSW), the worst-affected state, up to 1,365 homes have been destroyed. It is too early for a thorough examination of?the impact on wildlife, including the many threatened species in the fires' path. Does this qualify as unprecedented? Plenty of experts say yes, but not all politicians and newspaper columnists are convinced. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison acknowledged the fires were severe, but also adopted a familiar line: Australia has always had bushfires. That's true. But a key question is whether it has always had bushfires like this. David Bowman, director of The Fire Centre at the University of Tasmania, says the most striking thing about this fire season is the continent-scale nature of the threat. “The geographic range, and the fact it is occurring all at once, is what makes it unprecedented,” Bowman says. “There has never been a situation where there has been a fire from southern Queensland, right through NSW, into Gippsland, in the Adelaide Hills, near Perth and on the east coast of Tasmania.” He says one of the less explored issues, though it has begun to receive some attention in recent days, is the economic impact of having prolonged fires that affect so many Australians. “You can't properly run an economy when you get a third to a half of the population affected by smoke, and the media completely focused on fires,” he says. There are also fears critically endangered Wollemi pines have burned in the fires tearing through the Blue Mountains. They were thought extinct until discovered by bushwalkers in 1994. Their whereabouts had been kept secret from the public to keep them safe. Authorities say the smoke that has smothered Sydney, Canberra and other centers and towns in recent weeks has produced pollution up to 11 times greater than the hazardous level for human health. In Sydney, the air pollution has been hazardous for at least 30 days. The explanation should be familiar by now: greenhouse gas emissions do not cause bushfires, but they play a demonstrated role in increasing average and particularly extreme temperatures and contribute to the extraordinarily dry conditions afflicting eastern Australia. Scientists cite the near absolute lack of moisture in the landscape as a key reason the fires have been so severe. Multiple studies, here and overseas, have found the climate crisis is lengthening the fire season. Source article: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/01/07/2003728808 Next Article Topic: 7.5 billion-year-old meteorite contains oldest material ever found on Earth Scientists analyzing a meteorite that fell down onto an Australian village in 1969 have discovered that the rock contained many particles of stardust that existed before our solar system was formed, dating them to around 7.5 billion years ago, making them the oldest material ever found on the Earth. The study findings have been published in the American scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The meteorite that was analyzed fell to the Earth in the area around the village of Murchison in Victoria, Australia on Sept. 28, 1969. A team of scientists from the US and Switzerland placed ground particles of the meteorite in acid to remove all the material, leaving only the stardust. They then measured the length of time that this stardust would have been exposed to cosmic rays, in order to determine its age. According to Philipp Heck, the primary author of the study, they determined that 90 percent of the stardust in the meteorite was dated to between 4.6 billion and 5.5 billion years ago, with the remaining 10 percent being over 5.5 billion years old, of which the oldest was around 7.5 billion years old. By comparison, the solar system started to form around 4.6 billion years ago. Although this stardust is the oldest material discovered thus far on Earth, Heck believes that there is even more material older than the solar system in the Murchison meteorite and in other meteorites, it's just that they have yet to be discovered by scientists. Source article: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/01/20/2003729528 Next Article Topic: About Australia - Australia wins AI 'Eurovision Song Contest' Dutch broadcaster VPRO decided to organise an AI Song Contest after the country won the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. Featuring Dr. Chris Dicus of Cal Poly, and Dr. David Bowman of the University of Tasmania. These two experts bring an incredible perspective on the wildfires impacting both California and Australia, as well as the patterns around the world. Dr. Dicus speaks about the various fire risks and causes from wind-events, and downed power lines, to lightning storms and pre-existing unhealthy forest conditions. Dr. Dicus unpacks “fire season” and the changes as a result of climate change. Loss of life, loss of property and environmental damage have all increased in recent years. Moreover, while climate change impacts wildfires, in turn, wildfires are a tremendous source of carbon pollution. Dr. Dicus speaks about the importance of prescribed burns and forest management and breaks down some of the myths about them. Dr. Bowman speaks about the history of humans and fire, and their co-dependence on fire, from the cars we drive to the way we heat our homes. Dr. Bowman speaks about the correlation between dry, dehydrated landscapes and prolonged fire seasons and gigantic fires. He reminds listeners and that wildfires are indeed extreme weather events. Dr. Bowman warns that the fires on the east side of Australia were so intense they mimicked a medium volcano eruption. As a result, they put Australia on the top greenhouse gas emitter list and impacted Australia’s weather and climate. These fires were not normal fires and their damage was seen around the world. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/healthy-radio/support

In part three of our podcast series on the megafires that brought destruction to Australia this summer, Campus Review spoke to a world-authority in land management practices - Professor David Bowman from the University of Tasmania. This episode focuses on the the challenges of reducing fire loads, the ability of megafires to overcome fire containment lines, and a question that is leading to intense debate in the field: Will more fire burning lead to more carbon emissions in the atmosphere than intense bushfires or even megafires in the future? And what will be the implications of this? One of the salient points Bowman makes is that Australia, as a landscape, is not an idealised environment that makes controlled burning easy. As he puts it, Australia "is not a frictionless surface" : it is full of mountainous streams, rivers, tributaries and a whole host of other complicating factors. He also warned that the scale of controlled burning required to establish fire breaks across the country would be "mind-boggling".
Session 2: Future Thinking As the scale of the loss and devastation continues to mount, our communities have pulled together, and our politics and policies have been called into question. But the biggest question of all is, what do we do now? Is this a turning point in our nation's history? Being a little older than 30, my challenge was to find what could I do that was going to provide meaningful, rewarding work. I’d had some success with weight loss, having started walking and then jogging in my mid 40’s. What I quickly realised was that, even as an older person, it was possible to train safely and get fit from a very low fitness base. I also became aware of how awesome it was to feel and look healthy again and the positive difference that the commitment to my health made to my overall outlook on life. So, I made the decision to become a qualified personal trainer. Having delivered over 6000 sessions, what’s amazed and inspired me is the number of fantastic people who’ve joined our wonderful fitness community, the varied backgrounds they come from, the different ages of people I’ve trained the different challenges they’ve faced and overcome, and the many ways I’ve been able to help them improve their physical and mental health outcomes through tailoring fitness programs to help them achieve their fitness and health goals. If you’d like to find out more, I’d love to hear from you. Perhaps you’d like to try our Free Fun Fitness Week, where you ease your way into your new fitness journey, try our different programs and see for yourself if our fitness community is a great fit for you. In this podcast episode, David Bowman explores the relationship between fire, landscapes and us, the human population. Co-author of the book 'Fire on Earth – an Introduction', David is now leading the pack globally in this very complex field. Tasmania has just had the most unprecedented fire event and whilst these large-scale fire emergencies are not new to the State, the increasing frequency is what is shaking our confidence & safety. In 1967, a huge fire event destroyed vast regions of Hobart and its surrounds, then in 2016 another dramatic fire event wiped out large areas of Gondwanan forest & pencil pine populations in the central plateau. Now, three years later, we faced fire on an unprecedented scale, where multiple vast blazes created a ring around Hobart and once again burnt deep into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. This event scattered resources and made protecting assets, such as lives, property & our wilderness, a huge challenge. Months on and the fires are actually still smouldering today. Fire is fundamental to life. However, bush fires seem to be happening more frequently, with each fire increasing in intensity. I knew that I needed to beg and grovel with the highly demanded David Bowman; to sit down with him to once-and-for-all understand what is at play here. What do we know about the impact the climate is having on fire behaviour around the world? Why was it so hard to fight these fires and what can we learn from this? What can I do, as an individual who loves our wild regions, to help? This podcast was a series of amazing monologues. It is essential for you to listen right through to the end, where David turns the tables, transforming what was personally becoming a deep sense of doom & gloom into something so powerful and uplifting that I have come away even more sure-footed about how I can make a difference on this planet. This is powerful listening at its finest!
A rash of lightning storms leading to a swathe of fire outbreaks in Tasmania have been attributed to climate change by the Director of the University of Tasmania's Fire Centre Research Hub, Professor David Bowman.Professor Bowman, the founder of the centre, talked about the work of the new centre with RN Breakfast with the host, Fran Kelly, and surprised many by referring to the upside of the present difficulties experienced in Tasmania as the Australian state wrestles with what Professor Bowman described as the "new reality".
With the London Interbank Offered Rate — which underpins more than $350 trillion in mortgages, commercial loans, bonds and derivatives worldwide, including $200 trillion in U.S. dollar-denominated financial instruments — not guaranteed to be sustained after 2021, what should banks be doing now to prepare for a transition away from the widely used benchmark? On the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast, Federal Reserve official David Bowman and ABA staff expert Hu Benton discuss: Need-to-know background on why Libor has become unsustainable as a benchmark rate Why the Alternative Reference Rates Committee selected the Secured Overnight Funding Rate, or SOFR, as its preferred alternative What bankers need to know about how SOFR behaves differently from Libor and why they will need time to get used to it The urgency of reviewing bank portfolios to ensure contracts contain fallback language should Libor cease permanently Supervisory expectations regarding SOFR use and planning for the Libor transition How bankers can get involved in the ARRC’s public consultation process on the transition and learn more
$200 trillion of financial contracts and securities are tied to LIBOR and that matters to everyone – small businesses, corporations, banks, dealers and investors. At SIFMA's 2018 Annual Meeting, Sandie O’Connor and David Bowman discuss how the Alternative Reference Rates Committee of the Federal Reserve - known as ARRC - is leading the U.S. transition the Secured Overnight Financing Rate, or SOFR. Sandie is the Chief Regulatory Affairs Officer for JPMorgan Chase & Co. and chair of the ARRC. She also serves on SIFMA’s Board of Directors and is chair of our global affiliate, GFMA. David is a senior advisor at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and is the senior staff liaison to the ARRC. Their conversation is moderated by Randy Snook.
For this first episode, I have a chat with David Bowman, 31 year young New-Yorkian, former Rabbi and a background of working in corporate finance. David found his way to Meditation through Judaism and discovered how Pragmatic Meditation can help people who don't connect with a religion or have no interest in dogma yet still want to be able to follow the Path of Meditation. David created a free course on themindfulcourse.com about access concentration, a way for anyone to practice Meditation with measurable results. You’ll find that the motivation and enthusiasm of David is contagious… and I believe this first episode is a great kick-off to the upcoming podcasts. Qu'est-ce qu'une conversation vide? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARJ8cAGm6JE « Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore.
The choice of new benchmark interest rate should be of special importance to practitioners as well as academics that study law and economics. In April 1968 Stanley Kubrick's ground-breaking sci-fi movie was released in the US. The film had mixed early reviews but went on to be considered one of the great classics of all-time. Keir Dullea played the starring role of astronaut David Bowman in the film. He tells Mike Lanchin about working with Kubrick and with the famous space computer H.A.L.Photo credit: MGM / EMI

The guys from Knowledge Vine are back for a three-part series discussing human performance improvement. In this first part, we talk about the importance of buy-in at the executive level of any business. Human performance improvement for a lot of organizations means a shift in culture, which cannot happen if top level management is not “bought in” to the process. David Bowman and David Sowers, of Knowledge Vine, gave us some actionable steps when starting down the path of human performance improvement; the first of which is identifying the gap (or variance) between what management expects and how the front-line employees actually operate. This episode is focused on the executive level management of your organization, while the following two episodes will be geared towards the operations management and finally the front-line employees. “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” – HAL 9000 It’s been a long time since 2001 Space Odyssey portrayed HAL (Heuristically ALgorithmic computer) as the sentient machine who locked crewman David Bowman out of the spaceship to prevent being shut down. Since that movie debuted, artificial intelligence has become a reality and, with it, so too have many fears. From piloting planes and driving cars to playing chess and winning on Jeopardy, it appears that AI is actively participating in human endeavors. But what does that mean for us carbon-based lifeforms and our professions? In this episode of Law Technology Now, host Bob Ambrogi discusses artificial intelligence, its uses, and the potential impact on the legal industry with Thomson Reuters Corporate Segment Director and Legal Managed Services General Manager Eric Laughlin. According to Eric, AI will revolutionize the practice of law and provide greater access to it for the masses. He described the upcoming revolution as gradual, with changes going from being novel and labeled as AI to becoming routine and regarded as additional tools on various devices. Stay tuned to hear about predictions for legal jobs in the future, why many attorneys and firms support the development of artificial intelligence, and the exciting developments at Thomson Reuters’ Cognitive Computing Center of Excellence, where they are teaming up with IBM Watson to create exciting new products to support the legal industry. Eric Laughlin is the managing director of the Corporate Counsel Segment and general manager for the Legal Managed Services at Thomson Reuters. In addition to heading their IBM Watson initiative, he is responsible for their information, software, and service offerings for corporate legal departments as well as their technology and service offerings in e-discovery, contract management, and compliance domains.

Oct 31 Interesting Oct 31 googling it I found more continuity discrepancies. http://fitzsimmonsshield.tumblr.com/post/132125395709/lets-just-stop-for-a-moment … Oct 31 Interesting. Thank you. Oct 31 so either they really are so close to the deadline of the episodes and missed or cut a few scenes for such a big thing. Or it is intentionally and means something. Oct 31 Hard to tell Oct 31 yeah, only during the min mark I wrote you it really is suddenly and unexpected. Ann Foley from ther production wrote that they cut a scene where Will found it and gave it back to Jemma. THough that scene looked like it was a mid-sentence appearance, though it was a cut from A to B camera in the cave. Oct 31 oh right, wanted to suggest a location to feature the SHIELD logo: On the next STS-136 vehicle going into space. Oh, wait, I forgot. Professor David Bowman discusses the complex interactions between fire and food webs, and the part humans have played in manipulating that system; how fire impacts on biodiversity, and how some animal species impact on the severity of landscape fires.
Deras forskning publicerades i ansedda tidskriften Cancer. Reporter Albert Ehrnrooth. Ulrika Björkstén berättar om Vetenskapsradions satsning "Nya forskningsländer".
Alan just published a book on a subject dear to my heart, synchronicity. He payed the role of editor and collected 26 essays on the subject and compiled them under the title THE SYNC BOOK. During the podcast Alan shares a personal experience that transcends mere synchronicty, and feels more like direct contact with a mystical overlord. This ethereal presence claims to be communicating from Sirius! This is the kind of thing that gets my attention. Topics discussed include: The 9-11 mega-ritual, Jake Kotze, UFO's, the contact experience, spiritual journeys, lottery tickets, 2001: A SPACE ODDESY, Charlton Heston in PLANET OF THE APES, Jared Lee Loughner and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, owls, communications from Sirius, direct gnosis, Steve Willner, David Bowman, David Bowie, stuffy academics and Osiris.
