This is of course by design. We've seen this before in places like the Netherlands as the government attempted to shut down 50% of all farm land by paying farmers to close shop. The Netherlands is the second top exporter of agriculture in the world. This lead to massive protests. "No farmers, no food" was a common slogan. Now we are also seeing massive protests in Brussels again as activists are attacked with barbed wire, tear gas and water cannons. These protesters are also allowing routes for travelers around them. They're not shutting down the average citizen. In fact, they're taking over toll booths and letting people drive through for free. The protests in France are getting bigger by the moment as well. French farmers are vowing to continue the "Stop The Slaughter" protests. This comes as the government mass culls cows to stop the "spread" of Lumpy Skin Disease. We've seen similar claims regarding mass culling of chickens in the United States. The French army has been called in to stop the farmer protests. Meanwhile massive blockades persist in Mexico and the US ports of entry causing major strains on the supply chain. Farm land is bought up and not used at enormous levels in the United States. This is all by design. Destroy the supply chain, destroy independence, make people dependent on grocery stores that are getting more and more expensive and less and less stocked, push people onto a digital ID, make people use a CBDC and social credit score, give people food rations, completely control humanity via technocracy. I'm Mia Nagasaka, Head of Japan Financials Research at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities. Today – Japan's stablecoin revolution and why it matters to global investors. It's Friday, October 31st, at 4pm in Tokyo. Japan may be late to the crypto market. But its first yen-denominated stablecoin is just around the corner. And it has the potential to quietly reshape how digital money moves across the country and globally. You may have heard of digital money like Bitcoin. It's significantly more volatile than traditional financial assets like stocks and bonds. Stablecoins are different. They are digital currencies designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to assets such as the yen or U.S. dollar. And in June 2023, Japan amended its Payment Services Acts to create a legal framework for stablecoins. Market participants in Japan and abroad are watching closely whether the JPY stablecoin can establish itself as a major global digital currency, such as Tether. Stablecoins promise to make payments faster, cheaper, and available 24/7. Japan's cashless payment ratio jumped from about 30 percent in 2020 to 43 percent in 2024, and there's still room to grow compared to other countries. The government's push for fintech and digital payments is accelerating, and stablecoins could be the missing link to a truly digital economy. Unlike Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, stablecoins are designed to suppress price volatility. They're managed by private companies and backed by assets—think cash, government bonds, or even commodities like gold. Industry watchers think stablecoins can make digital payments as reliable as cash, but with the speed and flexibility of the internet. Japan's regulatory approach is strict: stablecoins must be 100 percent backed by high-quality, liquid assets, and algorithmic stablecoins are prohibited. Issuers must meet transparency and reserve requirements, and monthly audits are standard. This is similar to new rules in the U.S., EU, and Hong Kong. What does this mean in practice? Financial institutions are exploring stablecoins for instant payments, asset management, and lending. For example, real-time settlement of stock and bond trades normally take days. These transactions could happen in seconds with stablecoins. They also enable new business models like Banking-as-a-Service and Web3 integration, although regulatory costs and low interest rates remain hurdles for profitability.Or think about SWIFT transactions, the backbone of international payments. Stablecoins will not replace SWIFT, but they can supplement it. Payments that used to take days can now be completed in seconds, with up to 80 percent lower fees. But trust in issuers and compliance with anti-money laundering rules are critical. There's another topic on top of investors' minds. CBDCs – Central Bank Digital Currencies. Both stablecoins and CBDCs are digital. But digital currencies are issued by central banks and considered legal tender, whereas stablecoins are private-sector innovations. Japan is the world's fourth-largest economy and considered a leader in technology. But it takes a cautious approach to financial transformation. It is preparing for a CBDC but hasn't committed to launching one yet. If and when that happens, stablecoins and CBDCs can coexist, with the digital currency serving as public infrastructure and stablecoins driving innovation. So, what's the bottom line? Japan's stablecoin journey is just beginning, but its impact could ripple across payments, asset management, and even global finance. Thanks for listening. The goal is to decide if people traveling from point A to point B is suspicious and should be investigated. Similarly, everyone's social media posts are being monitored. This is clearly for the future social credit system. As Keir Starmer rolls out mandatory digital IDs alongside the EU which is launching their CBDC, Canada's Mark Carney told COP30 that he was AI data centers to pay carbon credits. This is getting incredibly dystopian. On today's show we are looking at some of the changes happening in the global monetary system that I believe  are being largely misunderstood. The Genius Act is enabling the US the extend its reach internationally which could have the effect of strengthening the US position as the world reserve currency. Think about the demand for dollars or any stable currency if you live in a country that has high inflation. The people in Turkey or Argentina or Venezuela along with numerous other countries are experiencing very high inflation. Inflation in Turkey is close to 50% year over year. Argentina is 98% year over year, and Venezuela is a whopping 400% year over year. The average person on the street aims to spend their pay check fully because they know that whatever they purchase will be more expensive next week. If they can't realistically spend all their cash, they will find a way to exchange their local currency for US dollars or Euros. But mostly US dollars. The problem with is that the folks can't open a USD denominated bank account with their local bank. They end up going to expensive currency exchange businesses and pay a sizeable premium to convert their Turkish Lira into USD. If you walk the streets of Istanbul, these currency exchange businesses are virtually on every street corner.  This year the US Genius Act was passed into law. Most people don't know what the Genius Act is. Some know that it is something about crypto. But they're not out there buying their groceries with bitcoin or Etherium. So who cares. What does this have to do with me? The thing to remember is that Stable coins are programmable. That means there is a history of all transactions on the blockchain and the US government can maintain both oversight and control over the transactions. Today, the vast majority of Stable coins are denominated in USD. That means the adoption of stable coins for commerce outside the US will actually extend the reach and entrenchment of the US dollar as the world's reserve currency. The fact that these coins are not issued by the US government will create the perception that these coins have the best of both worlds. They are US dollar denominated. They are backed by either US dollars or by US Treasuries. But they are not a CBDC. The idea is that these coins are all about extending the reach of the US dollar. There's currently 180 FIAT currencies in the world. There is no market for exchanging Guarani from Paraguay into Japanese Yen. All of this happens today through the US dollar. Stable coins denominated in US dollars are the key to further entrenching the dollar as the world's reserve currency. I'm Mia Nagasaka, Head of Japan Financials Research at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities. Today – Japan's stablecoin revolution and why it matters to global investors. It's Friday, October 31st, at 4pm in Tokyo. Japan may be late to the crypto market. But its first yen-denominated stablecoin is just around the corner. And it has the potential to quietly reshape how digital money moves across the country and globally. You may have heard of digital money like Bitcoin. It's significantly more volatile than traditional financial assets like stocks and bonds. Stablecoins are different. They are digital currencies designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to assets such as the yen or U.S. dollar. And in June 2023, Japan amended its Payment Services Acts to create a legal framework for stablecoins. Market participants in Japan and abroad are watching closely whether the JPY stablecoin can establish itself as a major global digital currency, such as Tether. Stablecoins promise to make payments faster, cheaper, and available 24/7. Japan's cashless payment ratio jumped from about 30 percent in 2020 to 43 percent in 2024, and there's still room to grow compared to other countries. The government's push for fintech and digital payments is accelerating, and stablecoins could be the missing link to a truly digital economy. Unlike Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, stablecoins are designed to suppress price volatility. They're managed by private companies and backed by assets—think cash, government bonds, or even commodities like gold. Industry watchers think stablecoins can make digital payments as reliable as cash, but with the speed and flexibility of the internet. Japan's regulatory approach is strict: stablecoins must be 100 percent backed by high-quality, liquid assets, and algorithmic stablecoins are prohibited. Issuers must meet transparency and reserve requirements, and monthly audits are standard. This is similar to new rules in the U.S., EU, and Hong Kong. What does this mean in practice? Financial institutions are exploring stablecoins for instant payments, asset management, and lending. For example, real-time settlement of stock and bond trades normally take days. These transactions could happen in seconds with stablecoins. They also enable new business models like Banking-as-a-Service and Web3 integration, although regulatory costs and low interest rates remain hurdles for profitability.Or think about SWIFT transactions, the backbone of international payments. Stablecoins will not replace SWIFT, but they can supplement it. Payments that used to take days can now be completed in seconds, with up to 80 percent lower fees. But trust in issuers and compliance with anti-money laundering rules are critical. There's another topic on top of investors' minds. CBDCs – Central Bank Digital Currencies. Both stablecoins and CBDCs are digital. But digital currencies are issued by central banks and considered legal tender, whereas stablecoins are private-sector innovations. Japan is the world's fourth-largest economy and considered a leader in technology. But it takes a cautious approach to financial transformation. It is preparing for a CBDC but hasn't committed to launching one yet. If and when that happens, stablecoins and CBDCs can coexist, with the digital currency serving as public infrastructure and stablecoins driving innovation. So, what's the bottom line?
